      the internet and youtube is waaaaaaaayyyy better than that old fashion shit called tv, because on the internet there are more movies
      and other great video's and programs to watch when you want, what you want and whenever you want and without adds when you use addblocker,
      the best invention on the entire internet! That's why i swapped my couch for my deskchair, because i'm on the internet for 22 years now,
      and the only tv i watch is the movies i record, because then i can skip the advertisements. Hell, the internet came right on time, because
      tv sucks because they don't make the great tv series anymore like they did in the 60's 70's and 80's. It's all reality tv or who's got a talent
      and cheap crap like that, because it's now the average joe that's the tv star, because they don't cost a penny.

      Unfortunately planes like the previously shown Bonanza will be good for parts only. BUT they will see life making other planes keep flying. This one and the next are salvageable however, it just depends on what one is willing to invest

    I had a 1967 Aztec and loved it. It was great flying 1 ton dually.....literally would carry anything you put in it.

      @@RobtheAviator I was thinking that too. Why did he take that personal? My husband and my son built top alcohol engines for race boats and dragsters together. Daddy’s are good dads in different ways. Airplanes was one of the few things we never messed with. I know zero about airplane motors.

The guy who felt attacked can be a perfectly good dad spending time with his son teaching him to paint, to hike, etc, he would still be a good dad. My comment was to praise this specific dads method of being a good dad.

    Jimmy and his son in these videos deserves a huge SHOUT OUT on how is has such patience especially when he is interacting with his son. I have so enjoyed these videos as much as I have for a few great reasons and for the ability to watch such a healthy bond between father and son that any man and son would love to have the same strong bond of father 7 son. My best friend, my father was such a man and after he passed away at the age of 69 is when I realized what I lost in his absence. I miss my father every single day and though I am 60 years old you never stop feeling the love from your father and the love of your son. My wife and I were unable to have children and after finding why which was my wife's Multiple Sclerosis we figured out just what we both lost in the death of my dad as he loved my wife with the same unconditional love he always showed me. Rest In Peace, Dad and for Marty and his son, may you both never lose the joys, memories and the bonds of love for your dad and the love of your son. I couldn't find the name of your son, Marty??? Can you please let me know so I can refer to him by his name instead of just son? I am not a freak and just his first name is great. Please all share this video and my comments so others reading this might pay a little more attention to the treasures parents and children share. I know I referred to the relationship between father & son but it applies to both sons and parents or daughters and parents. Peace, Luciano G.

    "There's no way that's as far back as it goes" As an avionics technician who's constantly crawling back behind the instrument panel, I felt that. Seats in aircraft can be the worst, especially in GA.

      You can always tell a real A&P mechanic from a poseur. They all say the same thing: If you can see it, you can't reach it. If you can reach it, you can't see it. The Aztec is one of the worst for working behind or under the instrument panel, since the wing spar carries through under the front seats; if you take out the seats it still doesn't help you much, since you have to lie on your back and your lower back and ass are about a foot above your head as they pass over the spar. "Airplane mechanic" sounds so romantic, but I've done about every dirty/difficult job around, and it's one of the worst.

    Having worked in Aviation back in the 70’s, I recall a hot Saturday midday in New South Wales where I was refuelling a Pawnee at the bowsers
    As I taxied back to the parking area I passed an old Aztec that had not moved for several months. Just as I was level with its nose, an engine dieseled and spun its propeller spontaneously. From that day onwards I have never ever again walked through an aircraft’s propeller arc.

    I own a '73 Turbo Aztec. It has the Bendix "Shower of Sparks" ignition system. When you have the starter button in the start position, you are using a different set of contact points in the magneto that retards the spark to around top dead center, as well as depending on a vibrator circuit to make it all work. When you release the starter button, the system goes to the "run" setting with different timing from an ordinary coil/condenser circuit. Your starting circuit is probably not functioning, likely the reason it won't start until you release. I hope you - or somebody - gets it flying.

      In the automotive world, I have also heard of them not having enough juice to fire the spark plugs while the starter is running. When you let off they have enough juice to pop them off. That's a whole different field though

      The start retard points on the LH mag are probably dirty, it sounds like the buzzbox works.
      Also, if you pull the P leads off the mag side it will ground itself, (there is a spring contact that's closes if no P lead is connected) Just learned all about them after nothing would work on my old engine!

    That pilots seat has a block to prevent the seat from going all the way back just in case the latching mechanism would fail on takeoff. It is a safety device.

    I'm a 52 year old auto mechanic and there are a few similarities between auto and aviation internal combustion engines.
    Can I just say, from my diagnostic perspective, you seem to be spot on. Systematic, methodical approach to those engines was a pleasure to behold. Compression, check. Fuel, check. Spark, check. That bad boy MUST run. It wasn't a matter of if, but of when.
    Glad to see your camera crew invested in the project as well.

    Seeing that Aztec brought back memory of the mid 70’s when I worked for an ag flying company in New South Wales. It was a hot Saturday midday and I taxied a Pawnee over to the fuel bowser to fill up for Monday , past an old Aztec that was parked in the open and hadn’t moved for several months . It occupied a parking space alongside several other light aircraft. As I was refueling the Pawnee I happened to look across at the Aztec and observed its port engine spontaneously fire up and start spinning the prop for about 15 seconds. I guess that the outside temperature caused some fuel to fire. I have never witnessed anything like that again. It taught me to never walk through the arc of a propeller for any reason.

    The Aztec is my favorite Piper plane. Having grown up in Lock Haven, I saw many of these fly overhead. While working as an engineer intern, I finally had a chance to fly in one. Thanks for saving the old girl.

      @@something7992 I believe the product he's shooting (fogging) down the cylinders has some ether like stuff in it. Ether can be very harsh, wash out the rings (no compression so no fire) and can go BOOM! if you use too much.... so ....

    That plane has a ‘shower of sparks’ ignition system that is enabled when cranking. When you release the start switch, the mags go back to the normal run operation. There is an extra set of points in one mag that has delayed timing to get quicker starting. There is a vibratator box, red in color, that is the power for the shower system. I think it’s somewhere behind he instrument panel. It’s been 25 years since I worked on an Aztec. Good luck.

      Some modern car engines do this as well. These days “it’s only software”. It really helps keep the spark plugs from getting wet during cold weather cranking. That’s actually one of the weaknesses of multipoint fuel injection, it doesn’t have quite as much time for the fuel to vaporize as with a carburetor. I design MPFI systems for a living and wouldn’t advocate going back, but it is a bit more of a pain in the arse for the engineers to get the thing to start all of the time.

      100% this. My Mooney has the exact same device...failed 2x in 7 years so I'm intimately familiar with this failure mode. As soon as it worked when he let go of the key I knew what happened. The boxes tend to be in stupid locations and prone to water ingress.

      In my 63 Aztec the shower of sparks box is behind left forward nose panel, on a shelf. Also, my baggage door key has to carefully be inserted and massaged around to unlock doors.

    Once upon a time I used to work on A-6 Intruders for VA-34 BLUEBLLASTERS out of NAS OCEANA, Virginia Beach. That was back in the late '70's. Home ships were the JFK CV-67 & DWIGHT D EISENHOWER CVN-69. Broke the EISENHOWER in brand new. Aviation is amazing. Nice to see you having fun with this.     I repaired many Aztec Lycoming engines. The engine is very tolerate. Once it is service regularly, it preforms well. The air-cooled system is excellent, it helps to maintain the engine. Once it is properly oiled it runs well. Only complication you may encounter is carbon pressurized deposit in the electro unit of the spark plugs due to high torque combustion. However? This will be executed due to proper hourly inspection. Jimmy did a great job. The Magneto, pressure check and overall sequence was good. Good job Jimmy.

    Brilliant!
    I've had a total of three (so far) of those combination mag select/starter switches with the same failure mode... disconnects mag/ignition whilst cranking. It's like Groundhog's Day in the Twilight Zone.

    I flew freight in an Aztec in 1980. I recently looked up that old bird to see if she was still flying. N20DM was well cared for by a retired airline captain and looked better than when she was a freighter. It actually brought a tear to my eye that she was taken care of so well. The airplane saved my life one icy night in Decatur Illinois. I was a pretty green pilot with less than 2k TT in my logbook, most of which was single engine flight instructor time.. N20DM was a full deice AC with boots all around/Hot Plate on the Wind screen and hot props. The Aircraft was loaded for bear with all that deicing equipment. All of us freighters regularly took off into known icing. The only report that would shut us down was freezing rain. I screwed up and took off with the right engine starter spinning but not engaged with the flywheel. I was told the next day that the starter solenoid had welded itself in the start position which caused a semi slow drain on the battery. The DC amps gage was an afterthought and was mounted on the right side under the dash. I had to bend over to the right and shine my flashlight at the gage to read it. I checked the gage to make sure it was showing a charge but I didnt take enough time to interpret what the gage was actually telling me. With the starter still spinning, the gage was trying to tell me that the amount of charge was too high. I saw what I wanted to see but spent only enough time understand that the needle was on the charge side and not the discharge side. I didnt notice that the charge level was much too high and I went through the rest of the check list routine and took off from Springfield ILL enroute to Decatur. The flight usually took only 20 minutes, so I wasnt to worried about the pilot reports of moderate rime ice. Within 5 minutes of the takeoff, I was being vectored for the ILS to Rwy 6 and I noticed the first indication that something wasnt right. The backlighting in my flight instruments started getting dim. I messed with the rheostat for a few seconds, that of course didnt help. I turned on the cockpit lights but they were so dim that they were useless. The next thing I noticed was the ILS to 6 was starting to show flags bouncing in and out of view. I then made the assumption that the electrical charging system was somehow failing. By then ATC was turning me to an intercept heading for the ILS 6 at KDEC. I turned off battery switch and began offloading everything electrical that I could think of. By then I had started using my flashlight to see the instrument panel. I left only the #1 nav head which had the ILS to RWY 6 tuned in and the # 1 com radio switch to their on positions. Everything else that I could think of at that messed up moment was shut off including the Windscreen hot plate. I quickly realized that If I couldnt shoot the approach to RWY 6, I might not make it. The entire area was low IFR in moderate rime ice. I flipped the battery Sw back on and declared an emergency, I told ATC that I was experiencing a electrical problem and asked for distance to localizer intercept. They said I would intercept on current heading in about 9 miles and not receiving your transponder. I had turned it off with everything else to save power. I didnt respond to ATC, again to save power. I then turned off the nav lights, the #1 com and the battery Sw again to conserve as much power as possible for the ILS receiver. All that I needed was the ILS receiver to stay alive. I flew for about 3 minutes with approach flaps getting ready to intercept. Thankfully the wind was calm and I knew from the preflight weather report that the WX was hopefully still 300 overcast and 1 1/2 miles visibility from one hour ago. I flipped on the battery Sw to see if the localizer was moving yet. Thankfully with everything else turned off the battery had a few minutes to recover and the ILS needles swung instantly into motion with no flags. I knew they were telling me the truth, the GS needle was off the peg starting down and within about 5 or 6 seconds the localizer came off the peg. I started my turn to intercept and bracketed the inbound course. At glide slope intercept I put the gear down and started down. In this AC putting the gear down was almost always in a no wind condition a perfect setup for following the Glideslope with very minor inputs. The Aztec was a beautiful instrument platform. As I intercepted and started down the ILS, the nav head started flagging again. I was forced once again to turn off the battery Sw. I let 20DM save my life by gracefully with no autopilot she held her heading and decent rate to the 400 agl point. I flipped the battery Sw back on and the needles centered up and I started seeing the glow of the Rwy lights. She had done a perfect ILS approach on her own In spite of her damn fool pilot. The last bit of crazyness on that approach was that the windscreen was iced over. I had to flare looking out the side windows. I didnt really flare much, I eased back a little and let her do the rest. The way I see it, that graceful old aircraft kept me alive.

In other words guess at my position for 2 minutes. Sorry if my writing is a bit wordy. I had only one writing skills class in college, and a c effort at that.

      @@therealjimmysworld I dont know from pucker factor but when I got out of the airplane my legs were like rubber. In 35 years of commercial flying, that night was the closest I came to killing myself. All because I couldnt be bothered to take 3 extra seconds to interpret what turned out to be one of the most important gages for IFR flight. I guarantee that was a lesson learned the hard way and it almost cost me my life. The difference between a normal indication and an overcharge indication was about 3/16 of an inch needle further to the right . Im not making excuses, I messed up by not looking for something out of the ordinary on this incredibly important gage. There were no yellow or red arcs to say there was an overcharge. It was just slightly further to the right than normal. I should have taken a few seconds and at least looked around to see what the slightly abnormal looking gage was trying to tell me. Its amazing how something that at that moment was seemingly an innocuous minor gage anomaly but was actually so important as to nearly be my last flight. It scared me enough to rethink my life choices for about 5 minutes. I instantly realized just how much I love flying. Two hours later I got into the replacement Aztec that my boss flew in from Davenport Iowa and continued my route to Champaign/ Urbana and Midway in Chicago. Crap low IFR and moderate rime ice the whole way and I loved it.

    Great video to watch! Recently had to do something similar with an aztec that had been sat outside for nearly a year. I work with 3 aztecs just currently getting one airworthy and the other 2 are being used for parts! If you need any advice on them give me a shout! Don't forget to check the cables on that thing tho! Seen them in some states in the past 😬

    Great episode of Jimmy and Son aeronautical suspense! It’s much more interesting than the TV tonight boys and a real treat when I don’t even need to get my hands dirty! However, and notwithstanding the foregoing, I can’t help feeling that you should seriously consider taking the battery out of little Jimmies watch and wiring the two together to give you a bit more kick!

    15:47 The same happens to me sometimes in a single-engine Cessna and I think the sparks are generated at different advance timing during starter operation, than under normal operation. With an average engine, I should release the starter at the first sign of firing, in order to transition to the regular advance timing, but if the initial firing is inconsistent, intermittent or weak, I keep on turning the starter and when I release it after 5-7 seconds (not to overheat the starter), it "miracurously" starts with confidence.

    Years ago at age 19 I was the parts manager for a Cessna aircraft dealer and flight school. MacIntyre aviation at Long Island Macarthur airport. I had just finished 2 years of BOCES aviation mechanic school during high school. It was my intention of becoming a licensed A&E mechanic. But being in the business for 2 years I decided it was enough for me and the low pay. I hated Cessna's. Cheap made aircraft. I later became an electrical/ electronics tech for a public water utility. Being now retired I regained my interest in small aircraft. Love this video. But I would checked spark before you did all that work. Lol!
