    Once again, I start watching your videos… a little distracted, thinking ‘I know this… that… yes that too…’ then. WAIT! I have to backup and rewatch a section to learn something I didn’t know. I’ve been using Mac’s for about 40 years, still have one of the first Mac’s in my office… and YOU teach me something I didn’t know in almost every video.

      I am the same way - I have to rewind periodically to be sure I didn’t miss something.
      I’m somewhat new to the MacBook. Bought mine in 2020 and couldn’t be happier. The leap from Windows to Mac really wasn’t that bad.
      And Professor Gary’s channel is pure gold for someone like me. 😊

    I actually had no clue anything had changed until I went to swap out the desktop background. I'm not a huge fan of lists, preferring to see all the icons in one place, or at least have the option of how to view it. This has been seriously helpful in navigating the new format. Thanks for the post!

    Your video clearly shows the superiority of System Preferences over the new System Settings in Ventura. All the good ideas you mention could’ve been implemented in System Preferences without this complete redesign and it’s endless lists, scrolling, and digging down to find a button.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, we have to dig down to find buttons before too. And if the idea was to make it the same across all platforms, going half-way would have been bad.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can increase the pointer in Accessibility, but I don't know of any way to increase the text cursor as it still needs to fit vertically next to letters as you type. So it is usually the size of the font you are using to type.

    Great job as always, Gary. BUT the Apple UI team earns an F for this effort. Great UI takes a massive effort to get right (which means making it simple) and this is anything but! I'm not sure what the team was inhaling when they listed login items by *developer*. Thanks for making this 20-minute video trying to sort out Apple's huge misstep.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm thinking it is more complex than that, and may have to do with the age of the app, the time of last update to more modern libraries and such. I am testing an app of my own and that shows up with the app name. So maybe this gets corrects as apps update to have the right information in the right places.

    why did they have to change it? settings are the core thing for mac os users and I was really used to the old version. why would they change it?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mostly so iOS, iPadOS and macOS don't have completely different ways of doing this. Not changing it because people are used to it is a reason to keep it that way, but not a good one (should things still work like they did with the Apple II?) Making things work consistently across different devices is a good idea.

    Just got back into Macintosh for the first time in 20 years. Recently purchased an M2 Mac mini. The last time I used Macintosh it was 2003 with OS7. Hi Gary, after installing Ventura on my 2020 intel iMac, the dictation feature no longer worked. After reading some Apple forums, I started-up in safe mode and found that I could get it working. I’m OK with this level of iOSification of MacOS. It’s going to take a while but eventually I’ll get used to things. However, I’ve discovered one function that is no longer present: The ability to set priorities for different wifi networks. Network interfaces can still be prioritized, but not different networks within the wifi interface. Can’t “hide” startup items anymore, they either load with their windows or they don’t load at all. I wonder if any other functions were removed, I haven’t yet thoroughly explored enough to find out.

    Do you know where I can schedule sleep timers for my macbook pro on ventura now? I used sleep schedule on energy savers on the old OS for when I was about to go to bed. I'd put an audiobook on for an hour to fall asleep to, then the macbook would turn itself off/go to sleep after an hour, so the battery and power wouldn't be wasted... I can't stand Ventura! Wow, they really messed stuff up in the new app. They should at the very least play with some font hierarchy in the new app so that sections are seen easier in the panels. There’s no reason to separate Wallpaper from Desktop. I mean, if you’re going to do that why not move Finder Preferences under Desktop and have Finder function less like an app and more like the actual OS? Why not move Wi-Fi into the Network panel? Some really odd decisions going on in this whole thing. The problem with this is that the Settings app on iOS is very convoluted and complex compared to the old MacOS System Prefs. Now they’ve gone and made it complex on the new MacOS. At the very least they could have put everything in alphabetical order. Anyway, good walkthrough.

      You'll have to see what is available in the Media section I suppose. Depends on the printer and whether you installed some sort of update for it. Check with your printer's support too.

    In the old, I could add an app to the list of privacy features if that app was not found on the list by clicking on the ADD button below the list. In Ventura the ADD button is gone. So how do I add an app to the list if not there, eg, to add an app to acess my photos. ??

    • @macmost
      @macmost  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what you mean as the app has to have been built with the privacy settings, so you can't just add one. Maybe you are thinking of another part of System Preferences.

    Question. I’m trying to change individual app location permissions but there’s no apps listed in location services. There’s the location toggle at the top and that’s it. Is there no way to manually change app location permissions individually? Never owned a Mac before so I’m ultra confused.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure why you aren't seeing any apps listed in Location Services. Keep in mind that apps only appear there once you run them and they have specifically prompted you for permission to access your location. If your Mac is new and you haven't granted permission in any apps to use location, then you wouldn't see anything here yet.

    • @BUGPLAYS
      @BUGPLAYS ปีที่แล้ว

      @@macmost that’s what I figured for part of the issue. Another issue I’m having is for the ones I haven’t, I can’t go back and change the permission to allow. There’s no app settings. On basically every other device there’s options for each app but on Mac, from what I’ve seen, it’s very limited. Unless there’s access via terminal?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BUGPLAYS there are basically three states: yes, no, and no setting. If you specifically said yes or no, then you should see it listed in system settings. But if you didn’t choose, then it is up to the app to ask them next time it needs it.

      There is no "lock" like in Monterey and before. Instead it will simply prompt you for permission when you try to change something that needs permission.

Can you please upload a video or explain how to change it now? I have been trying everything with no luck. I would greatly appreciate it.

      Go to System Settings, Displays. Click on the Display you want to rotate. Then scroll below it to find "Rotation." I don't know if all screens allow for it, but the one I have vertical certainly does.
