Hong lost, but seeing how well he did past his prime and even during a minor asthma attack is pretty damn impressive. In his hey-day I would've hated having to fight Hong. Respect to the man.
Would have still been a pretty tough fight for him. Twister was taller with more muscle mass. Boxing is a sport of power and endurance. Kung-fu is more about speed, precision, and agility. Standard Kung Fu strikes are quick, but not all that powerful, unless pressure points or vital areas are hit... A pro boxer would more than likely be able to tank most of those strikes, and block many of them as well. The Martial artist would probably have to rely heavily on dodging and blocking because I feel like they wouldn't be able to take very many full powered hits from a boxer before they are out cold... especially if the boxer is bigger than them. In that case, even blocking would be hard.
@@justinklinck6575 Baji can hit boxer too but it hard to hit a proboxer who footwork. Power Kungfu sty had very powerful blow but it hard to hit fast opponent.
It’s not just the asthma, Master Hung is well past his prime, he’s much more skilled and experienced because of his age, but his body can’t handle as much punishment as Twister, who is still well in his prime.
How stupid would this actually be in real life? A young professional boxing champion bullies some middle-aged chinse man with asthma and kills him, like that's the most shameless thing ever

The depiction of boxing vs. martial arts is excellent.
Master's strategy is to wear him off. However, a strong punch from a boxer is, if well placed, is all he needs.
Only in high level boxing or heavy boxing though but this is a world champ we are talking about so he has to be able to knock out people in a single punch.

Many top tier martial artists can take multiple hits due to the conditioning they do. There's a video of a Sanda fighter just letting a boxer punch him in the face multiple times, and then just starts fighting again like it was nothing.
@@ehs1452 Even a top boxer can't take a direct clean hit, if properly applied (jaw, liver, etc). Not because of training, but because the body can't.
The point is the clear difference in strategy.
It shows the power of boxing. Only punches against punches, kicks, gymnastics and God knows what else. The kung fu guy had a much wider arsenal of moves but it still wasn't enough.
Sammo Hung really plays the asthma attack so well, it's really good to see he didn't just become a fighter type in films but a fine actor that really portrays the part.
There will never be another Ip man character like Master Hong. Complete icon

Bruce Lee saw the flaw in Alot of Kung Fu masters. despite the skill Alot of martial artists didn't condition their body in these time frames. And he started adapting boxing and other arts in his style so they didn't rely heavily on one style

That first bout they have is beautiful, Master Hung dodging and weaving. The way he brings himself back to his stance after engaging his opponents makes it seem like a dance. Martial arts is beautiful

If I would be a professional boxer and I´d struggle this much against someone this age, while I am in my prime, I would probably quit the shittalk. Even if the Master ends up on the floor, its a lose for Twister.
@Benny First of all, f=ma which means more mass equals more force. Boxing gloves only reduces the number of cuts but will greatly increase the chance of internal injury when hit. So if Twister wasn't wearing gloves master Hong will most likely survive after the fight. Second, boxing gloves are mainly designed to protect your finger, not your opponent, and the death rate in boxing is actually 10 times more than MMA.

I do really admire the spirit of Master Hong that fought for Chinese people despite the fact that he has managed Kung Fu school under the power of British government. The martial art of his is really effective. The attack of his body toward the enemy can be really fatality. Unfortunately, his heart rate and breathing is what decide his destiny and it fails him.

It's basically the same movie premise wise
The only real reason that Master Hong lost was because of his asthma decided to attack him. If not for that, there is no chance that Twister would have won. Master Hong was also stubborn too and should have requested for a pause to allow himself to recuperate with whatever asthma medication he had with him at the time. The asthma plus his own stubbornness to save face is what killed him in the end.

That's why he's so impressive.
Imagine if ip man remembered the moves master hung used and just proceeded to beat twister in the the first 5 minutes.
Instead of getting pummeled into the final round and finally Remembering.
Because he dont think about it yet untill he almost lose and think about him.
The moves didn't work so well when Hung did it. WHat Ip really did was attack the biceps to weaken his blows like he told Hung to do as well.
That's like me tho..When I almost lose in a battle, I remember something or maybe a strategy to weaken the enemy. (But it rarely happens)
Ip Man defeated him in order to get revenge for Master Hong.

I only just noticed on this watch through, that Master Hong has breathing difficulty at the exact moment he grabs twister by the neck. I’m wondering if this scene isn’t just be a coincidence, rather the implication being that he has reached a state of zen, oneness. The idea that the world is a mirror, everything is one, part of eastern philosophy to my knowledge. He can’t breathe because he is choking himself…

What I love is Darren Shahlavi aka Twister is a skilled Martial Artist, as well as a skilled boxer.
I believe the track playing in the back is master hongs heart very confident and content at first then as the rounds progress the asthma attack comes into play his heart becomes erratic and distrught

No, pride killed him. It's a central theme of this particular movie. In the end, Ip Man celebrates the duel along with Twister. I think it's the only "final boss" where Ip Man speaks directly to the audience after the last fight.
He sacrificed himself for the Chinese martial arts reputation all over the world..... He had got a point .....yes He died because of pride .... But after all he died with dignity...... This is the best role Sammo hung ever performed in a movie .....

@Benny there's only a training journal from 1965. Bruce was only experimenting back then. He reworked his workout regime multiple times. Of course, he wasn't a professional fighter and I doubt he'd beat any modern UFC fighter but he'd be able to kick your ass 99.9%. Bruce trained with karate champions of the 60's and exchanged ideas with them. It already shows that he wasn't as weak as you say he was and most likely understood more about martial arts than you do.

I repeat it again: as long as you don't show what you can do yourself, what you say about Bruce won't matter. He achieved much more than you in life. You need to be cautious about accusing such people of "being weak", "being able to break them like a twig" etc, especially if you can't do shit yourself.
I like how throughout the fight you can see the boxer being eager to re-enter the fight and engage his opponent while master Hung is usually the one falling back and resetting his stance
It shows how one style is way more calm and composed than the other style. Both still being valid fighting styles just that one is more brutal and less merciful
Boxing is just generally more practical and down-to-earth, and less about the artsy flashy BS.
I think this says more about personality than style. Not all boxers are this way.
@@DarthWall275 I think we should distinguish between modern and film martial arts, and actual combat styles that were used over a hundred years ago. Practitioners of various Kung Fu styles would do sparring fights in the past, they just dropped it somewhere after the war.
I also believe that Kung Fu evolved from more lethal combat to more civilised duelling techniques even earlier than that. Something like that would happen with European fencing. Before sabres became continent-wide adopted weapon, sabre fighting styles were different to anything that came later, and reconstructions suggest these could be extremely quick and extremely violent swings. Sources from the XVIth and XVIIth century state that if two sabre masters duelled, the fight would often last for just a very short moment, often resulting in one opponent being killed or both badly wounded. In the XIXth century when sabre was adopted continent-wide, it was still a combat weapon and the new Western fighting style was combat worthy, but it is much more static and tactical and allows for controlling aggression, rather than wounding or killing hordes around you. Then we've got modern sports fencing that has nothing in common with any of the combat styles, and if applied in real combat would have been suicidal for both opponenents if both were using this, and if it was used against historical combat style, the sports fighter would have easily been defeated and killed.
People say a lot of crap about martial arts, but in the 1920s, 1930s, fights between boxers and Karate and Kung Fu practitioners would happen, martial artists were well able to win against boxers. That's why these things became somewhat famous in the West even before the martial arts films era. It's just a theory but I think that when Kung Fu would still do sparring, the idea for the arts was more about duelling between practitioners, and self defence against those who were not trained at all. There are several moves from the arts that actually work great against people who don't know how to fight, plus every fight involves psychological element. I imagine masters would duel in terms of mastering the technique, and on the street the arts worked for disarming those who can't fight and scaring them off.
Boxing can be a defensive style too, in here they just made boxing look dumb, the boxer isn't even covering and he's always swinging unnecessarily long hooks

The mandarin dub is pretty good, but i really wish they kept og canto voice acting for the gasp at 4:51. The original is so strained and deathly that it really puts you on edge, knowing that his lungs are giving out. Whereas here it sounds like a hiccup.

The thing about Boxing is, it enhances the natural Agressiveness that a man has within them. For professional boxer that practice control, it wouldn't really be all that troublesome, but for those that embraces those violent tendencies, it's hard to stop swing even if they WANT to stop. The adrenaline rush causes them to revert to a more instinctive tics inside their brain.

This movie kept me on the edge of my seat for all of these boxing scenes
Its amazing to see the purpose of chinese martial arts, they seem to aim to using our body the best way possible to have a chance to defeat bigger and heavier opponents.
Ip man gives advice to master hong, but did not also do it in his own fight until the last round.
At the end there Master Hong was about to literally rip twisters throat out before having another attack and pulling away, brutal dude
It was meant to be an athletic contest not a fight to the death. If Hong 's ego was so fragile that he wanted to kill his opponent then he deserved what he got.
