    Honestly, considering this is the first time I've ever had someone react to one my videos, it's pretty cool that it was one of Melee's best (and my personal favorite) competitive player. It was kinda neat to see a competitive player's feelings on my (very clearly) casual perspective on a game I love. I honestly never expected people outside of my audience to see the video, so I'm happy with the positive response to the video. (Also I was really happy to see some of my dumb jokes landed.)
    So anyways, thank you for reacting to it, and I'm really glad you liked it in the end.

    Casual melee is INCREDIBLE. Item chaos, fun stages, tons of different characters. The only time I did not enjoy casual play when I was young was when my cousin learned hey if I hit someone of stage, I can just use sheik chain and troll.
    I think anyone that says melee isn't casual friendly is if you're BRAND NEW and just jump on netplay or something and you run into someone who actually knows how to play. That obviously wouldn't be fun, but casual vs casual is great.

      Melee is great if you're playing with friends and just fucking around, melee is great if you're tryharding on ranked against other sweats, melee falls apart when these 2 groups meet and try to force their ideal of the game on each other. Same thing happens in sports, in card games, everywhere

    We did this thing called “Chuck Norris matches” only falcon and gannon on temple, no edgeguarding allowed, and you can only fight in the bottom cave area. Great times. Stocks would go to 999 sometimes.

    I find it very interesting how people talk about how melee is "difficult for casuals". The game has a very high skill ceiling, about tied with third strike, but its skill floor is shockingly low. Lower than most other competitive games imo.

      It’s probably because people are comparing it to how easily accessible games(specifically new smash games) are nowadays.

      its only different for casuals because the many of the experienced melee players are complete elitist bigot sexists to any newcomers and in general

  • @Fin0fLenster

    Regarding the game being "too hard" now compared to back then people not really caring there are a couple things at play I think.
    A lot of us were much younger back then and didn't have the breadth of knowledge to levy critiques that we can now. This also goes for gaming as a whole. Standards have changed a lot for what players expect. Back in the day if you were just playing casually with friends and you couldn't really short hop with characters like Fox or Falcon then that's not really a big deal and not a make or break issue.
    Nowadays though if you're playing Melee at any level that's above playing with a bunch of pokeballs all the time the fact that something as simple as short hopping is actually difficult and takes some degree of real practice to do with a lot of characters really sticks out compared to a lot of games where basic actions are usually not difficult to perform. Like imagine if the triple jump in Super Mario 64 had like a 4~ frame window per jump input or you'd just start over every time. It would stand out as being weirdly difficult for such a basic action - or rather, we'd be looking at it as some kind of more advanced movement option due to that difficulty and it would contribute to the game being viewed as difficult.

      to be fair, wall kicks in SM64 are literally a 5 frame window where you lose all aerial control of mario if you fail (& if you hit it the first frame it retains your full speed, often leading to mistakes). games just used to be like that

    • @Fin0fLenster
      @Fin0fLenster 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@stinkdude Yeah and the game treats that as a more advanced thing that is only very rarely intended to be the solution to a problem and you don't need it to complete the game. I would argue it's far more niche in its intended application than something like short hopping.

    Playing Project Plus has made my hands feel tired or worn down after playing for a good hour, even with auto L cancelling and 3 frame input assist to help buffer inputs. Coming from ultimate can make you have to kill old habits like how long I hold inputs for.

    Nintendo's aversion to Super Smash Bros stems from a pragmatic business decision. Nintendo's perspective is that if they bury smash, then loyal fans of the franchise would redirect their attention to the newest games, spending their money towards other Nintendo products. However, this reasoning is flawed, akin to the fallacious belief that a billion dollars in pirated merchandise translates to a billion dollars of sales lost.
    Being fans of a game do not translate to being fans of a company. The only possible outcome is getting bad press for almost no gain.

    i think more development time would've been bad for the game (for comp play at least), it would've given them the chance to take out a lot of the technical stuff used there that would be seen as "breaking the game", wavedash, L-cancel, chaingrabs, etc., at the same time maybe the game would've been more balanced

    • @lapplandkun9273
      @lapplandkun9273 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not really. If they have just left the advanced tech in, patched out the unnecessary glitches, fixed characters like game and watch and roy, then people wouldn't really complain.
      And Sakurai and the devs were aware of such, they just didn't think it would affect the final product in anyway shape or form. Which it clearly didn't

    • @Barsee23
      @Barsee23 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lapplandkun9273 since the game is primarily made for a casual audience, I don’t think they would’ve made any real distinguishment between patching advanced tech and unnecessary glitches, and I don’t think they would’ve even been able to tell which was which anyways, they knew about them but probably left them in because of development time, once sakurai saw all the competitive stuff people did in melee he decided to take it out for brawl and the same thing probably would’ve happened to melee if they had more time to complete it

    • @lapplandkun9273
      @lapplandkun9273 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Barsee23 I mean patching glitches like the black hole and invisible ceiling, because those were clearly not intended. I never said the advanced tech were glitches. Sakurai stated in an email that he was aware of such when he was testing Luigi to make sure he wasn’t buggy or broken that he was aware of the wavedashing and l canceling but left those in because crunch culture and he didn’t think it would impact the final product, is what I meant. Game and watch and Roy had broken movesets that the former was a last minute addition with his aerials not l canceling if the game had more time instead of crunch culture forcing them to meet deadlines and Roy’s hitboxes are jank and doesn’t even match the animations, which thankfully the later smash games got right when he returned in smash 4 and is one thing they did better.

    • @Barsee23
      @Barsee23 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lapplandkun9273 that’s what I was saying with my original post, certain glitches or exploits however you would call them may’ve been taken out (like wavedashing) if they’d gotten full development time even though they may’ve added to the competitive aspect, but the game could’ve been more balanced if they got the full time to create/design all the characters, like with roy/g&w

    45:09 It's because Nintendo is, like most AAA gaming companies, is only focused on making themselves more money. They shut down all the Let's Play content for Mario games too, so that they could push Super Mario Maker. They didn't care about breast cancer or people dying or how much their loyal fans liked their old games, they only eventually switched their position because it would have been less profitable not to do so. If the backlash hadn't been so heavy they would have kept on. The love of money is the root of all evil, I've seen it change people. It's abhorrent what people will do for more money even when they already have more than enough. It crosses all genders, religions, cultures and ethnicities. Oh you guys like our game, bought it fairly, and are playing it not only out of love but also to support research that may save lives? Well too bad, you need to buy the _new_ version that's worse because we say so and people with cancer can kick rocks.
