I have been a long time Thinkpad user, but for me the 16:10 on the Dell XPS 13 won me over. I just wish Lenovo would switch to 16:10 like the had back in the day
16:10 screen would make the X1 Carbon perfect. I really hope Lenovo makes the switch with the 9th gen model. Unfortunately Lenovo was always on the slow side when it comes to screen innovation, I don't hang my hopes to high.
Agreed.. The two things that I really interact in a laptop screen and keyboard.. KB in the old Mac was so horrible that I had to instantly switch back.. The screen could have been brighter but my corporate only gives us the less brighter (due to touchscreen) one.. My pet peeve with these has been the sound which is bad

Typing this from my Lenovo 5 that you recommended. I can't thank you enough. My only regret is not option for the 100%sRGB screen. Oh god I was so stupid. The laptop is so good even for a 660€ device.
I ordered the 14 inch one 4800u/16gb/256gb/100%srgb for 737 euros, now just have to wait 2 weeks to try it, what ssd size did you take? is the speed ok?
Finally, I'm not alone in this ! I religiously refuse to buy any laptop with a different keys layout. Which leaves us with .. Lenovo only (after Dell fixed it in 2018, and then ruined it again). I just hope Lenovo won't change it because if they do, we won't have a single decent laptop around.

I received my Gen 8 2 week ago. Mine comes with the UHD(3840x2160) IPS Glare 500nits display and it is simply astounding display. You watch a TH-cam video and it's like you are there with them. The Dolby Atmos sound also is great. Coming from my previous bulky T520. It is so thin and light. I'm so happy with my choice.
I have used the 7th generation model since November, bought through my workplace. So far, it has been a complete disaster. It had to have the motherboard replaced after 2 months (flickering screen problems). In March this year, it started developing WiFi dropout problems that could not be solved through any combination of driver tweaking/installation. It has now been in repair since May for that very issue, no news yet. What the review says here is completely accurate. Keep in mind that battery is abysmal on the 4K model.

Josh,I really appreciate your work on reviewing different laptops focusing on various aspects and customized for specific kind of users!!I am little confused between 2 models I have narrowed down. Asus Zephyrus G14 (4900HS variant with GTX 2060 Max Q and 120HZ screen) and the new HP Omen 2020 just launched today in UK (intel i7-10750H and 2070 Max Q variant with 144HZ screen) ,price wise both are similar in UK.I really need your expertise on selecting one!!I am going to use the laptop mostly at home for work and entertainment (Watching movies and playing Games) both. Hope you going to review both the laptops on your channel and a comparison also will greatly help the viewers.
Thats never going to happen with an X1 carbon. Fn Ctrl will stay forever as Thinkpad ethusiats demand it to be that way. Its no issue anyways as you get used to it. Bezels are already thin enough. Wish they got a 16:10 display instead though. H series cpu would run way too hot in such a small machine.
Thank you for your warning about PWM flickering! I just brought an X1 Carbon with regular FHD just now, really appreciate the review! I'm going to like an sub as well.
Hey Josh, I had been tossing up between buying an X1 Carbon or a Dell XPS13 for about a year, before finally coming across your reviews and settling on the X1 Carbon 7th gen refresh (on sale) specified in your previous video, which has been perfect for my use case and I have no regrets. I have been a long time Lenovo user for about 15 years (about 4 different laptops in that time) Although your review is great, I have some criticisms about Lenovo (not your review). The older first two models that I had were great and had absolutely 0 problems. Great keyboard, battery, and screen. However, my last two recent models have been disappointing. My Yoga 900 screen would not turn on, even when the laptop is on. A quick research showed many other users had this problem. Lenovo did nothing to fix this. My new laptop (my current one) is the Lenovo X1 Carbon 6th.. I can't believe I paid over $2000 for this unit with SO MANY ISSUES. I can go on with problems. 1. My drivers keep failing (one day HDMI port stops working, then the next day the Fingerprint sensor won't work) 2. BATTERY life is absolute Garbage. They lied about advertising 12-16 hours of battery. I got the WQHD model so I wasn't expecting that... maybe 8-12. However, my unit can only get 4-5, even from day 1 (half brightness). That's worse than my older Yoga, which can still get 5-8 hours after 4 years of use. 3. CPU would randomly clock up to max when the charger was plugged in and run at 99% load, even when idle. Lenovo didn't come out with a patch for over 6 months so we users in the forums had to come with a custom command plan to fix this. In short, I think my next laptop will go with other competitors, like the Dell XPS. someone else in the comments (and you mentioned in the video too) that the Dell XPS has better processor, and display. My brother has last gen XPS and it has good 8-12 hours of battery. It's heavier but I can deal with that. The only thing that would convince me to stay with Thinkpads would be if Lenovo decides to go with AMD mobile cpu's, but I doubt this will happen. Intel seems to be forcing their processors with their partners. I do not know why more companies do not use the better AMD 4000 series cpu's, when they are clearly better.
I like how he tells you not to buy something else or saying crap like "whatever you prefer". I just want to know if I should buy this over something else. And this is good direct reviewing
Josh, you are the only that can do it. Please review the new Dell Precision 7550 and 7750 (2020) when they are out! it's the only laptop with no compromises at the moment if you are a content creator.
I have the last gen X1 Extreme Gen 2. Easily the best laptop I have owned. And I am beyond the definition of a power user. I got the entry I7 version with a 512hd and 8gb of ram. Switched that out for a 1tb and 2tb drive and 64gb of ram. I run a LOT of VM's for labs and studying. It handles everything flawlessly.
I bought a refurbished X1 Carbon Gen 8 for $260 in supposedly "excellent" condition based on the light weight and the large 14" screen. Waiting for it to arrive... Another review said the camera is awful but that won't be my primary use.
Thanks for the review Josh! How do you think the display would handle an eGPU through thunderbolt 3? Is it even possible to hook an eGPU up to this machine? Thanks for the excellent review!
Hi Josh, thx for the review of Carbon 8th. Since you mentioned the display in your review, so I am wondering whether lenovo had fixed that pwm(flicking) issue on this 8th carbon model(UHD/4K)?
If ThinkPads ditch the 16:9 for the 16:10 screen, more people will buy it. Nobody's using ThinkPads for video editng and most use them for spreadsheets or programming so we need more vertical space.
Thanks for this review. But as a previous customer, I should report that Lenovo has a very bad quality control issue, maybe on a par with Dell that you reviewed critically. I got to replace several times my X1 carbon and at each time, I felt like I've received different models. Parts and LCD panels felt different. I am not sure those problems still exist, but given that you reviewed 8th gen with the review model and 7th gen with the model you purchased, I am wondering if you notice any difference between the two.
Here in Canada they DOUBLED the price of the X1 Carbon for the 8th generation over the 7th generation for no reason at all! It costs more to get an 8th gen X1 with a quad core i7 CPU than it does to get a nice spec i9 8 core 16" MacBook Pro!
So the battery life is decent? Just looking at specs this seems to have a very small battery compared to the competition. But it's hard to know how real-world performance.
Hi Josh! Great review, as usual :) I am a computer science researcher, doing lots of code (mostly OCaml in linux) and my area of expertise is symbolic computing, functional programming, and software verification. I am considering the Lenovo X1 Carbon as my next weapon of choice (my current HP Elitebook 820 G2 is just great, but after 4 years of very intense use, it is calling for a retirement). Do you think the X1 carbon is a good choice for someone who does lots of coding, works with tools like SMT solvers (intensive use of CPU expected), and always needs to carry the laptop in a backpack? Thank you so much for your great work! :D
Had the previous X1 Carbon - for over 1 month it hasn't been able to boot; I have sent the machine back to Lenovo and once returned it failed again. Now it's been over a week with multiple calls to Lenovo support but no returned calls.
I’ve had my 1st gen x1 carbon since the year it came out. I haven’t done anything to clean it up or make it faster and it’s gradually gotten more sluggish over the years. Not to mention it’s falling apart physically. Every other day if I bonk it in the right spot the screen turns white and I have to open up the screen bezel and reset the little lcd screen connector on the back. The white screen has been happening almost since I’ve gotten it in early 2013. Anyway, I was wondering if any of the x1 carbon generations are worth buying? Considering the 7th gen after seeing this video. Thanks by the way this review is amazing especially for users so aren’t as tech savvy as others. Have they fixed the battery issue? On full charge from the get go mine has lasted two to three hours max off the charger. Are they more durable now? Out of the box my 1st gen had a broken screen and Lenovo replaced it on the spot. Took a month between getting the broken one and receiving the other one, customer service was good shipping was slow. Any guidance is appreciated, just wondering if I should stick with Lenovo. Love the brand and the minimalism of their laptops it’s just mine hasn’t been very agreeable. Cheers Lenovo users!
Hey Hey Josh Would you buy a used carbon of this gen (8 gen) or a brand new Asus Vivobook 14 (non S OLED) Primarily for browsing lightweight coding and lots of writing and reading essays.
hey Josh, love your reviews. do you think this laptop is suitable for working on autocad files? or should I get something more powerful? would appreciate your advice. thanks and have an awesome day. cheers
Josh, have you heard reports of ghosting with the Gen 8 display? My company upgraded from Gen 4 to Gen 8 and the display on my unit has noticeable ghosting.
Do you plan to review the Huawei matebook 13 that is just released? Though I'm not sure if you have access to that device. It would be cool to hear your thought if you do! The specs on the matebook 13 seems really premium, but I'd like to hear how it compares with other devices on the market (especially the MacBook air or MacBook Pro). Cheers
Hi Josh. Your reviews are the best, meaning honest. How do you feel about the trackpad of the x1c, though? I felt it had a dead zone in the upper left corner. The pointer gets stuck when you venture in to that region and then you have to lift the finger and put it down again to release it. A small thing but quite anoying, I find, and there is absolutely no fix. Supposedly it has something to do with palm rejection but you can't shut that of anywhere, it seems, not even by editing the registry. Also, why would palm rejection cause dead zones? The x1 Yoga has the same issue, as does the c940. I also noticed it on Razerblades 15" Base model.
Good review! It is almost the same laptop as the 7th... meaning everything is great but the terrible physical keyboard and mouse software are still there. The 7th and 8th gens have the worst keyboards since Carbons came out. Travel is bad and the key shape has been changed for the worse. The mouse uses ELAN software instead of Synaptics - bad move. TrackPoint isn't as smooth and the touchpad operates differently.
Hey Josh, I’m a civil engineer student and I’m thinking about buying a laptop but can’t really decide between a MacBook Pro or Xps (Mostly CAD, CAE and C+ software)
Great review, as always! Is there a good way (short of buying & trying) to see how my current laptop (3yo Lenovo Yoga-910) stacks up to this laptop or the 7th Gen version? I don't do any gaming or 4k video editing or any of the other functions that are commonly mentioned as "heavy lifting" computing BUT I do work with some large datasets in Microsoft Power BI from time to time. I love my 910 and I don't want to throw money away, but there is some appeal to switching to a new one and keeping the 910 as a "backup" machine. (The last two times that I've replaced a laptop have been when it laid down on me. The 2nd one was under warranty and I had it repaired BUT I replaced it with the 910 because no PC = no income for me.) Also, I'm now working from my home office 95% of the time due to the Pandemic and a larger screen (17") has a lot of appeal.
Hi, I’m a soon to be student studying nursing in college and was wondering whether to buy a Microsoft surface 3, dell XPS 13 or LenovoX1 carbon. After looking at many of your reviews I’m not completely sure which one would be best for me, as I hope to be able to use it for a few years after college. Many people recommended the dell XPS 13 and Microsoft surface as the convenient laptop for college students but after your review Im not sure, I also used the requirements you put in your budget laptop video to see if any of the laptops I saw were suitable but I didn’t really get anywhere with it, so if you could recommend/suggest at least five laptops you think is best for college students going into nursing it would be really appreciated :)
That was a super nice video, thanks for said the true ... I need to buy a new laptop... I really like the this one, but I’m wondering... between this and the MacBook Pro 13’ 2020 i5 8th with 16gb of ram... what would be a better choice ... 😇😇🙏
My company gets me this for work & I found it super light weight that's what I love. I am selecting one for my personal use as well but I guess I will go for the Macbook Pro 13" 2020 with the same spec as you consider. Mainly because I found Window 10 so many bugs
Could you please do a comparison between Lenovo Yoga C740, Lenovo Flex 14, Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5, HP envy X360 15, and any other 2-in-1 laptop to determine the best 2-in-1 laptop under $800. That'd be greatly appreciated.

Imagine a X1 Carbon with an AMD 4000 series CPU :)
Would be nice
AMD regurgitation.
Only thing that make me want an intel CPU is Thunderbolt 3 tbh... using a eGPU at home is amazing!
I'm holding out hope that they'll release an X13 with Ryzen 4000. That would be an instant buy.

I have the same situation. XPS won me over by the 16:10 screen. I’m a longtime Thinkpad user. I miss the thinkpad keyboard and track point...
I'm getting latitude 7300 i was contemplating Thinkpad but this one just won my heart
Doesn't 16:10 mean black bar when watching videos
...but the X1 has a 14inch screen... so its the same height as the XPS 13's, just wider.
For me the choice is simple: I choose ThinkPads as they have by far the best keyboards.
Yes. But I'm glad they came a long way in terms of screen quality. It was embarrassing up until a couple years ago.

Josh... I really love you way presenting...
I bought a refurbished X1 Carbon Gen 8 for $260 in supposedly "excellent" condition based on the light weight and the large 14" screen. Waiting for it to arrive... Another review said the camera is awful but that won't be my primary use.
How is it?
@@jeremyconanpribadi6742 Excellent for travel. Light, finctional, and almost never hear the fan.
@@ExtaTer How's the performance on basic tasks? Planning to get one for school since I need a cheap laptop for presentations
@@Janrick0518 Completely adequate. You don't need anything "more powerful".
Just ordered it today and see the review
Thanks for the review Josh! How do you think the display would handle an eGPU through thunderbolt 3? Is it even possible to hook an eGPU up to this machine? Thanks for the excellent review!
Hi Josh, thx for the review of Carbon 8th.
Since you mentioned the display in your review, so I am wondering whether lenovo had fixed that pwm(flicking) issue on this 8th carbon model(UHD/4K)?
laptop review video nowadays: "But does it AMD?"
I like this large bezels! Enough space for post-its!
it'd be great to see you go over the X1 Extreme!
Joao Ferreira x1 titanium is bettee don’t u think
I really hope the next year's carbon series has less bezels like this year's Dell XPS line. Looks so amazing
I had 3 units. 2 8th gen review models, 1 7th gen that I owned. Only QC issue I noticed was the backlight bleed issue mentioned in the video
@@JustJoshTech Thanks for this reply. That's good to know! I hope that Lenovo is getting better in terms of QC.
Great review mate. It seems the best is to get the x1 carbon 6th gen. As the only real difference is the speakers... what are ur thoughts ?
i love these reviews
Hi. How this comparing to x1 extreme? For a data / massive excel file? Better choose the extreme or carbon does capable for it?
Here in Canada they DOUBLED the price of the X1 Carbon for the 8th generation over the 7th generation for no reason at all! It costs more to get an 8th gen X1 with a quad core i7 CPU than it does to get a nice spec i9 8 core 16" MacBook Pro!
great video! so helpful. thanks!!
So the battery life is decent? Just looking at specs this seems to have a very small battery compared to the competition. But it's hard to know how real-world performance.
Hi Josh! Great review, as usual :)
I am a computer science researcher, doing lots of code (mostly OCaml in linux) and my area of expertise is symbolic computing, functional programming, and software verification.
What is the most cost effective and capable laptops for middle schoolers
Thanks josh!. whats your opinion on the X1 Yoga 5Gen over de 4Gen?
Hey Hey Josh
Would you buy a used carbon of this gen (8 gen) or a brand new Asus Vivobook 14 (non S OLED)
Primarily for browsing lightweight coding and lots of writing and reading essays.
hey Josh, love your reviews. do you think this laptop is suitable for working on autocad files? or should I get something more powerful? would appreciate your advice. thanks and have an awesome day. cheers
What laptop do you use?
Josh, have you heard reports of ghosting with the Gen 8 display? My company upgraded from Gen 4 to Gen 8 and the display on my unit has noticeable ghosting.
I'm still using my X1 Carbon 3rd gen, but definitely gonna swap if a version ever gets AMD.
It's not even next year it wont
Thanks for the nice words. I didn't notice a deadzone on mine, but i did find it was small the trackpad.
Would this be a good laptop for engineering applications such as design software like Catia or doing CFD work?
Hey Josh, I’m a civil engineer student and I’m thinking about buying a laptop but can’t really decide between a MacBook Pro or Xps (Mostly CAD, CAE and C+ software)
Was waiting for this review and finally it's here. Is there any ghosting issues with this 1080p model?
Great Review
Great Review! Having trouble deciding on these 2 options ThinkPad X390 8th Gen ($800) or ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 7 ($900) any insight?
Excellent video Josh, as always ;)
Small question, if you don't mind: which application do you use to create those graphs?
Can you upgrade to WiFi 6 on the 7th gen? I'm not sure on what you can upgrade internally.
Mainly because I found Window 10 so many bugs
great content... I am planning to buy the Lenovo thinkpad T490... Do you have plan to review?
Good day Just Josh. Thanks so much for your reviews. I need a review on Huawei Matebook 13, 14, and 15. And ask if it can be recommended. Thanks
Legend says he is bobbing his head to this day
Purchased. Waiting for delivery...
Thank you Josh.
Any idea if or when it will be available with 6 cores CPUs, like 10710U or 10810U ?
I have 7th gen with 6 core version. It is great, except battery life, which is 4-5 hours of real use.
Can we use any stylus on this laptop??? If yes which one
