He’s always gonna get a pass thanks to nostalgia and being the ‘first’ combiner for a lot of 80s kids.
None of these criticisms are wrong. It’s kinda irrelevant to many fans. Those of us old enough to have a few grey hairs have all of these problems baked into our opinion of this set. I absolutely adore Devastator for what it is and what it meant when I was a kid, long before my expectations of a toy were changed by 40 years of toy development. It’s a jewel of my collection and a very happy memory from childhood. No amount of hunting for scattered pieces on the floor will change that.
I found the G1 reissue at Walmart for $50, thank GOD I bought him. The real toy is still a bit clunky, yes, but the original/reissue is miles better imo. The arm isn’t loose, the chest is actually decently locked into place, and he’s not so damn loose everywhere! The reissue also traded out the springs, which is a bit of a downgrade but it’s fine. I’d give him the IGN special of 7/10, I really like him (I’d just recommend a more solid release of the mold).

let’s hope the studios series end up being epic because i want my third favorite decepticon combiner to be epic and not a menasor legacy my others two favorite decepticons combiners are menasor and bruticus
Yeah I have the KO version of devastator. Very soft plastic and spooky to transform. He's in combiner mode right now and that's it. I don't dare touch him anymore. But the good news is the new 86 is coming out. So hopefully it's better? I'm assuming it's going to look like G1. With the same hookups. Play the are sturdy enough? What do you think of them?
When I got him that one Christmas I put him together once and it was a PITA, but I loved the smaller bots. My friends and I all struggled with trying to figure out how to play with his combiner mode. Doesn't pose, you have to cradle him like a baby, it looked good but that was it. It did serve its purpose at the time. ML Devs will be pretty nostalgic but I'm wondering how different it will be from Studio, besides costing 2x to 3x more. I'd put Raiden with G1 Devs, it's passable pretty, but you gotta cradle that thousand-dollar brick like a baby, and I oh so love the bot and train modes a lot more on it too.

Firstly, although he was the first he wasn’t out for very long (probably less than a year) before the 1985 combiners blew him away and became the standard template, so the complete set didn’t feature in many kids’ toy boxes (I remember playing with only one or two). Second, a big appeal of the combiners, and G1 in general, was the lore. The idea that within the ranks of the Autobots and Decepticons were these subteams with their own diverse characters with goals and motivations that might not completely align with their overall faction was a huge part of the fun and play value behind collecting them (remember their personalities and tech specs were on the box)

I love the G1 Constructicon toys but even as a kid in the 80's I thought the combine mode was crap. So I just never used Devastator. But I don't know how much of that is just me. Even with excellent versions of the Constructicons, I honestly tend to display in either individual bot mode or alt mode anyway.
I got lucky, found a K.O. one that each constructions is about legend sise, the thing is anything but flimsy, and the extra bits still atach to the vehicle modes... except the head, that doesn't work well in Hook's crane mode.
Yeah, I got knock off Devastator, Superion and Defensor at Walgreens like 15-20 years ago and they were pretty darn solid, only issue was Hotspots legs were put on wrong and I had to fix them
Yeah this seems qc hell. Personally Bruticus is my fave, I’m excited to see legacy Superion and Bruticus. My only worry which is all but confirmed is that they are going to go back in engineering and have a bunch of extra junk to actually combine them. For instance the new ss86 Devastator has separate pieces for the forearms and you can tell the waist, hips and thighs are just an extra chunk of plastic. I know that they are going for accuracy with scale to make all the constructicons the same size. Really making me thinking of getting one of the 3rd party’s for Dev.
I used to have a complete G1 and G2 set. I had them up on a shelf where No one could touch them. Then my MIL gave them to my five and three year old to play with while me and the wife were out. I never found all the pieces.
I used to have a g1 Devastator, or more likely some re-release in g1 colors. And at that time I didn't know yet about g1, I only knew about Bayverse, so I thought it was some knock-off, which most transformers in my possession were anyway. So flimsy, unstable, tiny and overall weird it was, and the bright green didn't help either, I was sure it was a cheap knock-off. Don't miss it one bit.
I truly got spoiled with a third party releases of combiners. Not only are they built better but they still capture what we love about them in the show, but give a better articulation detail and so much more. ❤

I would say at least, individually they are fun but Devestator was garbage, he fell apart on a breeze, was hard to put together, with far too many parts to lose. Everybody who completed or got to see this combined toy was disappointed because you couldn't play with him, though he looked cool laying down and looking at the ceiling... The combiners that would come after were far better, with the standardized ports!
this is a G2 devy that's a zillion years old. You're right that the age degrades the friction joints, but also that it's a remould. as a kid in the 80s it didn't fall apart as much. Losing pieces was the biggest issue.
Gestalt. That's the magic word. Combiner will do They the toys are worse than the combiner. 3 modes that need to look good instead of 3. Usually you get 1. So now twice the disappointment. And Devastator is before the figured out a decent way to link them
Despite all the thrashing you've done to Devastator, I still love this giant robot and still find him to be one of the biggest and best cornerstones of G1 Transformer figures. Sure Devastator's got his ups and downs, tons of extra parts being one of said downs. But despite that, the whole Constructicon group prove to be interesting and fun vehicle robots with a lot of replay value, aging like fine wine.
I disagree, there are G1 toys that are solidly built like Perceptor, the OG Soundwave, G1 Optimus, G1 Megatron. They're clunky but still fun. G1 Devastator is a messy baby

As an 80s kid we were easily impressed but I always hated the leg connecting piece.

I would love to have a G1 Devestator with tighter joints and more capability. It's why I hope there's a missing link figure of him one day.
