@@mustyguitar was thinking that too, I have a set of CS69 and with the SSL-5 you’re on the right path, I’m new to your channel and I’m just working my way through your back catalogue of videos i’m finding it all very fascinating. I particularly like Gilmours tone live at Pompeii 2016. any advice on how to achieve that sound? Many thanks for all your effort, in making these videos and as a Gilmore fan it’s really appreciated!!🙏🏼

Very happy to have this comparison from you Mustafa. I think it good to keep in mind that you know the tones from your Texas Specials really well but will see additional possibilities getting equally familiar with the SSL-5. I have SSL-5 in the bridge for my Strat with SSL-1s, which I reckon are more similar to your Texas Specials, in the neck and mid. Also have the Obsidian controls and switching to allow 7-way switching (adds bridge plus neck and bridge/mid/neck switching position). To my ear, SSL-5 has an extra measure of fullness, which for some of the tones, doesn't make much difference but for others makes all the difference.
The SSL-5, or a modded version of it, is in his Fender custom shop Strats (which I wish would go down in price… I can’t find one for under $8k). He had a similar version in his Black Strat before he auctioned it off. So, being the “Black Cat” Strat is one of the custom shop versions, he’s currently using the same pickup on tour. I can say this- putting any vintage inspired Alnico V magnet pickups in your guitar, even lower end ones, will absolutely get you closer to his tones, especially if you’re like me (on a tight budget) and you’ve been playing a guitar with ceramic pickups (most Squiers have them, though the newer Classic Vibe guitars might have Alnico pickups in them). When I swapped them out, the difference was amazing.
@ my current partscaster Strat is my first guitars body (a 94 MIK black Squier) with a 70s “bullet” style Fender neck. I have Alnico V pickups that are marketed to be similar to the set sold by Seymour Duncan. They do a very good job. I’m just waiting to find a way to make the recessed switch for the mod. I’ve seen the brackets, but they’re like $60 for a tiny piece of metal, and usually have to be shipped from overseas. I have to see if I can craft an alternative myself. Not having that switch isn’t the end of the world for me. It’s kind of a hybrid between Gilmour’s Strat (with the color, pick guard, and short trem bar) and one Billy Corgan’s guitars (the vintage style neck with the bullet truss rod).
Great tones Mustafa, and amazing playing, you really nail Davids licks!! Just incase you aren't aware when I first got my Gilmour Strat I was taken aback by the pole pieces in the pick ups. If you have a close look at Dave's guitar you will see all the poles under the D and G strings are raised considerably and the poles under the B strings are sunken into the pickups. This is pretty consistent on all 3 pickups. No doubt Dave and Phil did a lot of tone tweaking over the years. Phil Taylors book "The Black Strat" is a great read if you haven't already. Keep up the great work man!
@@mustyguitar Hey, sorry for my late reply, I don't know mate, I'm not that tech savvy, just stood out to my eyes. What I have found is the specs that the Gilmour Strats are set up to as per Davids guitar. These specs are from Mike Eldred from the Custom Shop. May be handy to those with Gilmour Strats or those building one. All string heights are 4/64 except for both E's at 5/64. Measured at the 15th fret. Neck relief is .008 or .009 The bridge is not pitched as stock. It is only 3/64 off the body measured at the front of the angled part that holds the intonation screws. Pickup heights, fretted at the 21st fret. Neck : LE 6/64 HE 1/64 Middle : LE 6/64 HE 5/64 Bridge : LE 5/64 HE 2/64
I made my dream fender stratocaster I used the Seymour Duncan SSL-5 in the bridge position and a Seymour Duncan Jimi Hendrix in the middle position for the 60's tone and a Seymour Duncan SSL-1 in the neck position for the 50's tone more than happy with them.
I had one of those in a strat for many years. Love and hate relation throughout time. In some situations great, other times horrible. Too hot. Strange mid sound depending on the rig you are using. But this was just me. Replaced by a Seymour Duncan 59 (full size) on the bridge. Way better. Regardless of that, great playing and great tones in the vid. Congrats!
ssl-5 has been a game changer. i used to have a gen-4 noiseless in my bridge position, let me tell you, it was horrible. they fit perfectly in the neck and middle positions, but not the bridge. the ssl-5 made big muffs, tube drivers, powerboost, you name it and it made it sound better.
A bit late on this but, for Another Brick Part 1, perhaps David used his 0001 Strat, which he used for the rhythm on Part 2, which would then make sense for the Texas specials to be closer. Not sure perhaps I’m wrong but just some food for thought.
The SSL-5 has waaay more output than a common or vintage pickup, so it adds more mid range to the sound. That explains why it sounds darker and more smooth (I guess), cause it rounds up the highs and gives it a tighter mid range. All a matter of taste of course to the sound you like or are looking for. I think it's fantastic and is very much essential to get close to Gilmours tone on heavy overdrive and distortion sounds :) On cleans it might lack a bit of that glassy/pristine/clear vintage pickup sound you get from a Strat usually. Great playing btw ... reaaally good man!
I have installed the SSL5T version with a special pot. On 1 the pickup is tapped, which produces a vintage tone of around 6K, at 5 is another usable, very clean sound (a mix of tapped and full coil), and at 10 I get the full 13K of the pickup.
I wish I knew that this pod existed before installing my SSL-5. I installed a pot with a “no-load” pot at 10 because SSL-5 with load sounded a bit muddy. But sometimes I want just a regular tone from the bridge and such a pot would be really helpful for me.
@@mustyguitar I have one in my Edge Signature Strat and I like and! What's more it's combined with fat 50's in mid and neck so it'spretty gilmourish :D
I'm not really sure why you were having the tone not sound right on Another Brick In The Wall. I know Gilmour said that he used the baby blue strat for rhythm parts on Another Brick In The Wall part 2, I don't know maybe he used it also for part 1, that could be it maybe. One other thing that I'm sure your aware of is that Gilmour would have still had the DiMarzio FS-1 pickup in the bridge on the black strat while recording The Wall Album.
REALLY suprised to hear that your SSL-5 is darker than the T Special. I’ve had one with a CS69 set with SSL5 in the bridge. CS69 neck, Fat 50s in middle and SSL-5 in bridge. I ALWAYS found it to be much brighter with significantly less bass. Since then I’ve stuck with similar pups with bridge being slightly higher output with better results. This makes me want to revisit the ssl-5. Maybe I should’ve raised it up more. The FS-1 was even more brighter and thinner than the SSL5. Strat bridge position is just a finicky position. I’ve even contemplated the SSL5/2 to tame the highs.
T-Specials are made to be brighter than 69s and Fat50’s. They were originally made for SRV and his tone is fairly bright. If you try the SSL5 again, make sure you get the correct height as that can make a major difference.
Musty_ DG's personal pickups are NOT SSL-5's. They are specifically SSL-1C-DG - custom wound by SD for David. The shop CS Strats have a modified SSL5 that's closer to the SSL1C-DG
You sure the black cat strat has a ssl-1c-dg instead of a ssl-5? Or did seymour make an exact or almost samesy replica of the original ssl-1c in the black strat that gilmour sold.
I enjoy the switch and actually do find it useful. I don’t use it ALOT but it gets use for sure. I Others do. I have to have it recessed tho so you can’t really see it. I prefer it over blend pot. You can easily build your own bracket. If you don’t like it you can put a treble bleed on/off, different tone control values etc…options Are endless.
I had that mod on my guitar before I changed pickups. I’m pretty sure he’s used it in the past, but has said he doesn’t anymore. I found it was great for getting telecaster tones. It’s a nice option to have. If I do it again, though (and it’s an easy mod), I’d like to get the bracket mount for the switch (so that it’s recessed, not mounted directly on the pick guard, like on Gilmour’s guitar).
Both sound great, but the Texas specials sounded better where it counts the most, in lower gain sounds. At least to my ears. The SSL-5 sound very "metallic", like new strings sound but exaggerated.
@@mustyguitar I'm struggling to find the right words but I hear a more natural sound with the texas specials on clean/low gain tones. With muff/fuzz or higher gain the difference is not as audible as on cleaner tones and that's where the texas wins. Perhaps a fine tuning could fix this but I don't hear any reason to change to the SSL-5 pick ups. Great video though as usual. You the man!
Gilmour didn't have the SSL-5 until About Face. Was not on The Wall album, but was on for some of the live tour for the Wall. Then he switched to his red strats with EMG pickups, and didn't pull the black strat out again until On an Island. Most of the music fans of Floyd love doesn't have the SSL-5. If you want his black strat sound like from Meddle to before The Wall, get a full set of CS-69's.
I think you’re missing the point of this video. Gilmour wanted ssl-5 for fender black strats. I mean ssl-5 is approved by himself. Modded or not. I can’t switch to dimarzio for wall sounds or cs69 for earlier stuff in a video. Just showing the ssl5 compared to vintage style pickups.
@ Okay got it. Just wanted to point that out because I made the mistake. I put the Gilmour set (fat 50’s, cs-69, ssl-5) in my strat. Sounds good but didn’t realize til later that that’s not what’s used for most of the music I care about. Had been putting my switch in the middle cs-69, preferring that pickup the most. His black strat was a 69 and kept the stock pickups for most of their golden days.
Interesting. Have you tried fender hot noiseless pickups? I have them in my black cv 50’s squire. Great for bridge dirt with muff. Not so good for neck pick up bell like stuff.
Hey Musty will a MXR Dyna Comp help that Another Brick in the Wall and SYCD intro solo tone, asking cause I'm planning on buying one, thanks Oh and where in the signal chain should the compressor go?
It won’t help with Shine On, but it is the tone of Brick. Comps are first in the chain to help with smoothing an OD and offer a boost. Thats is how he uses the Cali76 now, to boost the Tube Drivers into leads.
It will help! You will get more sustain even on lower gain settings. It should be placed early on your board, first or second (if you are using a tuner, that is usually first).
Than thin fizzy sound from the text mex pups, you sometimes get, are not suitable for DG and especially not CN! The SSL-5 totally wipe the floor with the tex! With the 5 you get fat saturated tone and much better sustain and a tone punching thru the mix! The 1W is amazing for a 1W, but get yourself a proper suitable amp and your tone will be the last 25 % of tone bliss that will make your playing shines even more ! 😊
I have a proper suitable amp but most of the guitar players can't use a big amp in their bedroom. Everything on this channel is recorded with 1w amp to simulate a bedroom setup and my volume is even lower than bedroom setup. I'm serious, it's dead quite :D

Use ssl 5 for only bridge or all pickup?
Only bridge for now
I prefer the other pickup, though I don't know what it is.
Texas specials
Hey Musty will a MXR Dyna Comp help that Another Brick in the Wall and SYCD intro solo tone, asking cause I'm planning on buying one, thanks
Oh and where in the signal chain should the compressor go?
It won’t help with Shine On, but it is the tone of Brick. Comps are first in the chain to help with smoothing an OD and offer a boost. Thats is how he uses the Cali76 now, to boost the Tube Drivers into leads.
It will help, and first
It will help! You will get more sustain even on lower gain settings. It should be placed early on your board, first or second (if you are using a tuner, that is usually first).
A compressor will help with Shine On 👌
it can do and even more. But I highly recommend mini version or the script version. block version sounds very "wood" if that makes sense.
Is this actually the first time you tried and SSL-5? 😮
this is the first time I recorded and heard the difference. hearing any pickup in the room with no comparison doesn't count
@mustyguitar agreed. Hands down the best passive bridge pickup for DG stuff.
This guy woops is the gilnourcmaster i trustch8s expert opinion ican buyca ssl5 in bridge and 69 in middle neck whadda thinkv
sounds perfect! I'm going to switch to 69 in the middle and neck too.
Literally can't tell the difference. Use whichever is cheaper or has less noise.
