You're speaking to the former readers of Sport Compact Car magazine, the lovers of the SR20 and RB26, Nissan in its prime, the greatest era of JDM 89-02!!!! Being in CA we have to deal with 91 octane horse urine and CARB compatible go fast parts!!!!
Nissan in its prime is an understatement! I actually think early 2k cars are the best. It’s just before all of the electric stuff started, the build quality and materials are better (chassis strength was like 2x better than most 90s cars).
To complicate the rear wing even further: AOA is in regards to airflow over the car, so if you're putting it on the trunklid at/below the roof line, flat is actually angled towards the airflow since it will dip at the rear window. GoPro and yarn tufts will tell you if the wing is stalling and where the airflow is going.
Patreon!! HELLO YES!! I would love to see your everyday builds what you’re working on and building for customers and what the customers are asking for/what is popular!!
Race gas = more uniform hydrocarbon chains, more stable octane, more stable product with a longer shelf life and unique characteristics. Pump + mmt = variable quality, variable octane, variable burn characteristics, cost is more friendly :-). E85 = what Mike said.
I would pay monthly (~15-20/month) for lessons across various aspects of racing and race car engineering. Topics such as types of races, general rules, steering kinematics and explaining ackerman vs other steering geometries. Or how caster affects grip and what the general rule of thumb is for these sorts of things. I like hearing you guys ramble as terms come up that I haven’t heard of or have forgotten, and hearing your brief explanations helps me build some nice/better intuition. Some other topics I’m curious about are turbo sizing, clutch types and sizing, radiator thickness vs frontal area, E85 contamination/comparability issues, bump steer, aero considerations for the car and inside the engine bay, spring/dampening considerations, common mistakes, etc… also general issues that you all see in the industry and what to look out for (such as the NACA airfoil example). Listening to your experiences and what grind your gears as well as potentially hearing your opinions on the best bang for buck value of using better parts here vs there (better tires vs an lsd, or Honda chassis vs miata, or whatever) can really help with my insight on these topics. My issue with other car enthusiast channels are similar to your issues (for likes, excessive hype, impractical, little engineering and explanation) and I like how you guys just talk with your more reserved and practical judgements. Please keep the podcasts going, very fun. Cheers. Looking back at this I typed way too much, and left it very vague. Sorry, regardless I hope it helps.
This is great information, and I love the format. I agree that the car scene is very different. So much is for looks. I do think that you are correct... many entities are producing good information and events( track days ) but it is for the love of being involved, and I don't think a lot of entities are making a good living off of this. Keep up the good work! Yes, I would do Patreon. Series of realistic, helpful information/ podcast format that could have content on track days beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Then the same goes for drift events. And could touch base on getting into wheel-to-wheel competition. Then something with guests and stories of past experiences is just good entertainment as well.
Great podcast, it would be awesome if you could get some of the old hats to guest star on the regular like Gillespie and Coleman. This is what us old '90s JDM guys who were big SCC readers/subscribers want in a podcast!
Thanks for answering my Exocet's fuel question! Useful info… I'm also a long-time Sport Compact Car Reader, proudly displaying my magazine collection in my home office. Also, I picked a Boosted Exocet as a way to go fast in something light, reliable, cheap to maintain (thanks to Miata parts and support), and really gives you the fizz or sense of occasion when you drive it. This leads me to a QUESTION: With a budget of $25-45k (Car + Mods)… What would you buy or build that would be fast and reliable as a trackday ‘street drivable’ cars? Frame of reference: stock engine’d BRZ/FRS/GT-86 isn’t “fast”. (I have a 2013 BRZ Daily) And for the Patreon question, I would pay (~$10mon) for you guys to have a regular show and answer complicated questions from us common folks with deep technical knowledge.
Personally I think an old C5 Corvette is a great low buck track car. Billy Johnson has written articles about low buck Mustang track cars as well on the MotoIQ web site. E36 and E46 BMW's are pretty good too.
100% would do a TH-cam membership or Patreon sub. I do a TH-cam membership for another channel I enjoy. Mostly because they do long format livestream/podcast style stuff like this... and they're consistent. For paying subscribers, I think that's the big thing they want is consistent content. This was an awesome episode! Keep em coming.
HOLY shit can I come over? These guys are my people I wanna complain about ricers these days, and talk about what *actually* makes a performance difference, while taking shots 😂
On the topic of car culture for the next podcast I'd like you to each answer what enthusiast car (to enjoy on the street) would you buy for $30k, $60k and $100k? Would you pick the same car if you kept 10% of the purchase price on the side for gotchas? I'm specifically thinking things like a c6 z06 and budgeting money to get the heads fixed or the wacky stuff you expect to break buying an F80 M3 or the crazyness you just expect to pay by preserving the value of a Porsche having it serviced at a dealership. Maybe there's too many questions here but one last thought is with anything over 500 hp there's just a constant state of restraint to keep yourself out of jail. Enjoying the podcast and how it devolves as you guys get liquored up.
Loved the podcast. Some constructive criticism: please let Mike finish his sentences. Several times he's interrupted and spoken over. Please keep doing the podcast!
I've heard Mike talk on a separate interview about how Dia Yoshihara's drift car defies physics, pulling more gs than thought possible on the tires. I'd love to hear more about that. Id also love yall's opinion tire wheel to tire width ratio and what is optimal for performance. See Tire Rack's video on the subject. It answers my question, but I feel that the subject is more complicated and could use more elaboration I'm replicating your 370z build with my nismo, and It would be beneficial for me to have an updated opinion on tuning philosophy for the 370 and zs in general. Tuning strategies to counteract inherent flaws in a chassis. For example, the wieght and distribution issues found in the z chassis. Suspension bushings: where to replace bushings with stiffer to maximize performance and response while vs comfort. I've been waiting a while for Mike to do a podcast as a car enthusiast in engineering student I love this stuff. Mike is one hell of an inspiration and motivation to get through school.
Patreon, yes. You’d be my first. You could “sponsor” channels like BoostedBoiz and show them how to tune and build properly for their application. We could pay for your tequila. Maybe…you could offer a “consult” rate. Yes I realize…that’s also your actual business, but I can’t afford you since shipping to California is prohibitive.
running a 93 integra for mainly autocross and some trackdays, what modifications or alignment set up would you recommend. Not looking for power, class irrelevant. love the show and thanks.
you guys should do a show on what a street modified car is versus a pure race car.A lot of people have a foggy line of what should be considered street performance and track performance.
This is a great idea that I think Mike would love to discuss. Over the years, as an engineer, I learned how to build a fast STREET car, a fast DUAL purpose car and a fast TRACK car. Based on Mike’s anecdote, I’d say he has gone through the same. If they focused on what the threshold between a street car and a race car is, that would be a perfect high value discussion.
I would totally do a Patreon if you guys brought back the old SCC level of information and presentation. Just straight Nerd Alliance level information and builds, kind of like what HP Academy does but with a pure focus on fun track performance, maybe even do some builds like an all SPL Parts 350Z and how to set up all the arms. Engine build, customer cars, readers' rides at track days, bringing all the information to a head with track shoot outs between the hosts. There's lots of good examples of how to put a new shine on the old SCC "Gentleman Tuner" objective information based culture. Like maybe do a series where the Miatabusa gets finished, and turboed, with all adjustable suspension, that would be insane! I would totally pay for behind the scenes updates and videos on a project like that. Like when Mike was talking about proper roll centers with a modified suspension, make a video where you show the diagrams and break it down for folks and show a car on track demonstrating the good and the bad between the concepts to hold folks' attention. Just embrace the nerdiness!
Do you guys ever consider making a TH-cam membership? It's much easier for someone to join/contribute withour having to have CC (credit card) for payment
The problem with shipping vehicles (using my military experience) is the car has hazardous chemicals in it so you need a Hazardous shippers deck (short for declaration)like 5 copies filled out in accordance to 49 CFR and/or you but "drained not purged" on anything that has fluids. I finally got a house with a big garage in the back (900sqft) you would think I would be going hog wild working on stuff but nope it just sits out there (being retired meant a 80% cut in pay) I spend most of my time watching you guys do cars, SCCA just killed GTL so that sucks
I think with a proper motoiq podcast listed on the various platforms, many would sub for sure. Pretty sure you'd hit pretty high on the rankings vs what is out there now too.
I would like to know more about engine balancing, how balanced your assembly need to be? What is the ideal weight to aim for? is 1g good enough? How much does it affect durability like on an EJ.
you guys are great and maybe getting a little too wild with it, but you need to leverage your connections to really revitalize and take advantage of all the deeply missed Sport Compact Car Gang content, the original readers are still out here. E85 Tip: Keep the tank full. E85 is hydroscopic and will attract water. If the car is sitting, prime the oil system with the fuel / injectors off to lubricate the cylinder walls. It goes without saying, if you don't have Teflon or Ethanol rated fuel lines you're asking for problems.
@@motoiq I can give you a possible solution but it requires effort. Remove your injectors and run them through a flow bench after use, then reinstall them clean and ready.

best era of tuner cars in my opinion are 1995-2010. After 2010 things got complicated with emissions and EPA stuff. But after 2016 it’s pointless to mod anything because the C.A.N bus and emissions got more complex.
Regarding E85, could you use Redline premix designed for alcohol and help avoid excess cylinder wall washing? This is something some of us do in the RX7s. Along with proper warm up and avoiding short drives as well as changing the oil every 1000 miles or so, could this be a recipe for a weekend fun car. Thank you in advance
Just like the ZZP Grand Prix. Literally nothing redeeming about it, it doesn’t even matter if it’s making 467whp…which isn’t impressive. My 1.4L multiair made 236whp…. And that’s before I adjusted the ECU limiters. But yes…who wants that power with a couch?

I’m one of a few multiair tuners in the world, pushing the limits of the ECU and the hardware. I’d actually just love to geek out about building a multiair engine. Maybe…I will ask…Using e85 and/or meth injection, how much can you tune “and ignore back pressure”? IMO, I like to keep the turbo in its peak efficiency so I’ll push the tipping point more, but I don’t like falling off the efficiency curve (like all other tuners for the platform). Another issue with the multiair/tjet engine is the spring seat pressure is very very low, so what signs am I looking for when pushing the ability for the valves to operate without float, from back pressure/cylinder pressure.
So don't angle to much the rear wing to not brute force air flow and downforce, but the splitter must be flat to accumulate air and create me downforce....i'm missing something, someone could explain it to me ?
I say ditch the alcohol. Maybe I'm just irritable because I listened while driving a semi and being completely unable to pass some drooling moron who set his cruise at 12 under but had more power on all the passing zones because DOT engineered all the roads for the cars to get around me, on the American assumption that power is everything and corners are just something that happens. But anyway, half-drunken disorganized rambling is not what I seek from the most rational man in motorsports.
I use Rev x with e85 seems to smooth idle and increase butt dyno. I Change the oil every 2000 miles, can smell heavy ethanol in it even at that interval. Not cheap doing it this way lol

I don't know anything about that system because none of the cars that use it were imported into our market to my knowledge. As far as ignoring backpressure you can never do that and it was one of the mistakes in my opinion that guys trying to stretch stock turbos to the limit.
@@motoiqmultiair was in North America…actually it still is in Stellantis 1.3L engines. TJET (just a typical DOHC) was EU only. Interestingly, you can mount the TJET head onto a Multiair. Thanks for the bit on back pressure… I definitely pushed my stock one too far (the turbine cracked), strangely, never developed shaft play but the bushings were wiped so it was burning oil.

Equity not equality. Must weigh down the fast cars so everyone finishes together!
Almost everything Mike said about Splitters was either incorrect or based on really old ideas.
No its not. Not on production-based cars that regular people modify anyway. Fluidynamics is fluidynamics. Air behaves the same as it always did.
Man no kidding that stuff is expensive!
Stop using additives, they only dilute the additive package and the base stock.
Do you have objective data to support this or is it your opinion. Are you a tribologist?

hahaha this wont be seen until after hes absent
What car was it in for NA?
