I have a stock oil pump but I I will go bigger when I go fully built! For internals I have kings bearings and ARP head studs. Making 303 at the wheels tuned on 92. Fun but reliable! @JonathanLopez-rg8le I have just got my wrx back from the tuner, new genuine EJ207 block with ARP headstuds, RCM head gaskets, 11mm oil pump and killer b pick up. Should be fairly reliable running 20PSI on a TD05

That’s because Donut doesn’t really know Subarus, nor did they put the time into them when they did their videos. They are mostly Honda guys and put more time and money into their Honda builds. No hate, just truth and fact.
And here I was hoping to rebuild my own Subaru myself. I’ve seen many people do 450whp dyi builds so I was really hoping to rebuild mine with a blown headgasket.
I find these cars are the most balanced when you’re at 300-330whp. all the reliability upgrades like AOS, cylinder 4 cooling mod, EL headers, oil sump and oil pickup are a must. I also use water methanol to further reduce detonation. Great video! I always learn something new every time!
Agreed. That’s the power level I had the best time with (in a version 8 jdm sti), 250kw at the wheels. I did mainly hillclimbs and short sprint events and it worked well.
It really all depends on what you intend to do with the car. If you only plan to do "spirited driving" and light tracking every now and again, then taking out a second mortgage probably isnt the right path. Chasing ridiculous numbers is a fools game. Sure you can get 1000+ hp, but then you cant drive it around, or in this case let your daughter drive it daily.
That is not true, this car has it and its fine, and it runs really cool until it gets over 100 degrees at high boost at the track. That's why we have 3 different maps
Im currently restoring a 2002 wrx, about to restore the rockers and fix up the body. My engine was rebuilt last year with .5 mil larger pistons and has 60k on the block itself. My plan is to get the body done by next year and in 2026 start building an engine from scratch for tbe first time. Listening to you videos are def an inspiration to help me reach my dreams man. Thanks for your knowledge!
I did pretty much the same path with my car.. like 80% of it. Not know much I did ask a lot of questions and sometimes I was treated like I was over spending on the project.. today I hace a 570whp on ethanol and 470 on pump gas… the car is running good since 3 years ago and believe me when I say I drive it hard I do without getting worry about it… great content… thanks for sharing your knowledge !!!
Last full rebuild was 10k. Im not sure what is hurt this time. I might just buy AIGs 750 long block and run low boost. I think 500 WHP daily reliability is not out of the question. I just want to embarrassed all the scat pack and hellcats out here with out eating a ring land.
This is one amazing buiild... I want it! (And I don't even race, or speed, or anything.) There is so much information packed into this video, I learned things I didn't even know I needed to learn; multiispark coils, baffled oillpan, chasis stiffeners, and it just goes on. Great video; I'm glad you included a drive. (He describes it a kind of "OEM-plus build! This thing is tricked out to the max!)
Back in 2001 I built a 450hp/405 ftlb 1994 GC8 on 30psi, stock crank, stock 5sp trans with heavy clutch and thrashed it for 8 years no problems. Wish I never sold it.

This video completely changed my perspective on how an well balanced all purpose Subaru should be built. Granted I have a 2019 WRX, but this video has made me appreciate looking to build that comfortable 500-600 whp setup now.
I have a 2006 subaru sti that's running 400hp at the wheels on a mustang dyno. I love this car and the build process I went through to get here. I know I could have gone for more power but like you said more power more money. The worst part is money spent to power gained goes way down when you go above 500hp. I did my build for 500hp and had the tunner cap my car at 400. I don't want to live on the edge.
I daily drive a JDM Imported 2006 Hawkeye with a EJ207 and a IHI VF37 Twinscroll. The car is completely stock and came with factory STI Genome Gauges and STI Genome Cat-Back Exhaust. I am thinking of upgrades so thank you Moto IQ
If you want trouble free use, keep it stock and well maintained. If you want more, your engine is one of the stronger engines from the factory. I think downpipe, up pipe, front mount intercooler, a good conservative tune, larger injectors and upgraded fuelpump would be nice. If you drive on the track, oil pan, pickup, big radiator, oil cooler, windage tray and AOS would be wise additions. Flex fuel is also nice for track driving and more safe power. Remember keep the tune conservative.
Man, this has gotta be the perfect high hp street and track STi build. No stone left unturned, everything done to the highest level. I would only argue with the EL headers vs UEL but even that only on the basis of that iconic rumble. Hard to argue with efficiency though. Beautiful
Subarus do run great after you replace everything. 😂 Love the videos and the car man! Minus labor and cost of the car how much $ is into this super reliable track ready STi? I'd be interested to see where this falls money wise compared to other chassis like the EVO, Focus RS or just buying a 911.
I was thinking the EXACT same thing. New IAG case, forged pistons. Headwork, cams, AOS, flex fuel, injectors, radium pump and surge, aftermarket coilpacks, new turbo... To get all that in your car, tuned and running? 20k easy..

Love these videos. Now lets see you guys put all this reliability to the test. Track videos, drag, touring tips. I would love to follow the story of this car and see all this information tested in the real world over alot of miles! Love the content ❤
500s is perfect especially on a built motor.. it will make the car extremely reliable. No need for more on a road course especially!! 500 would feel perfect with that platform. I have a VB that makes only 350whp and 352wtq. Good for a street car I run a 255 square. I do need a oil separator. Great video lo e the car
I had a 04 GDB STi with the EJ207 ran it with a PE1820 turbo at 1.4bar drove it hard and tracked it regularly, had it for 8 years without having to rebuild it at all..
Thanks for sharing, I think this is the information that needs to be shared. Going 10milion Hp, is not really the answer. Having a realistic goal and understanding limitation will help accomplish a great, reliable build. I have been following you since I was young, now I'm a dad and I pass your knowledge onto my kids...and they are also part of the subie nation
That’s so awesome, but you can also prevent a Subaru from blowing up by simply driving it how it was meant to be driven. They aren’t built for much more hp then they come with stock. I’d stay within 100hp stock and it won’t blow up for WELL past 100k
lmao as a Californian i feel your pain - hey i built this nice fast car spending extra money on parts to keep it street legal with smog and all that, lets drive it!! oh wait the roads are poop and theres traffic everywhere yay :(
Love this STI one of my favorite street/race one! You guys should let some of the other youtubers drive it in the canyons or something to get more views heading your way
I'm new to the Subaru community! All I can say is I'm glad I found this channel! I'm in a dilemma and I hope you get some guidance advice? My first subie was a 01 forester and I just picked up an 08 sport Forester. I fell in love with off road and still love street. Which car should I off road vs street ? Can you do an equivalent build but for off-road? 👀
Hey I have a Forester legacy wagon. A 99 that has been sitting this brutal winter with no start for two months and she has 228500 miles in her and she started right up today
55:55 Unless you have already passed that point of traction loss and are riding it. Colin Mcrae style... Then It is actually incredibly beneficial. The problem is the number of people who can actually achieve this, and not wreck, or can actually enjoy this, are very few. This is what makes this car and/or platform such a Great rally car chassis. why you can just take a factory Subaru, Turbo or No, and compete in some oem spec level rally cross and such at the top level... if you have the skills.
Lol I'm on my 12th subaru. Mostly had outbacks. But now ripping a 2015 wrx. All my cars touched 250,000miles plus. And only two of em blew up or out headgaskets. And I was abusing em. And they were like Legos to repair. I'll get a 13th.
I'm not too sure I've seen any other videos for other car manufacturers on how to build them so they don't blow up except for Subaru but of course they don't suck they just have to be built a very specific certain way lol
Mike Last Video: Pinpoints every single flaw with the EJ motor from the factory and singlehandedly sets back Subie Hot Boi's goals for 500 reliable HP for less than $15K. VAPE sales plummet Mike This Video: Y'all are fools for sleeping on this reliable motor and the Blob Eyes WRX/STIs. Goes on to make the States most reliable and fun daily driver/weekend track car for his daughter (but really he built it for himself) 😉
Idk, most engines are relaible without all those mods. Seems like a lil cope by a subie fan. But I do love the awd system. Brake vectoring instead of diffs is godawful.
I love the level of detail you guys go into on these videos. But long story short, if you want to have a reliable EJ over 400hp, you need to replace the block, pistons, rods, heads, ccv system, oilpan, fuel system, upgrade to flex fuel, and a new turbo? Did i miss anything? 🤣🤣😉
If you'll settle at 360-370 whp, a late model EJ25 STI only needs upgraded injectors/pump (for E85), downpipe/ex, intake and tuning. That'll get you over 400 lbs-ft of torque by 3000 rpm and at least 350 whp (most make more especially if decatted). It'll daily well (better than stock - quicker boost response and much torquier thanks to E85), run reliably and last longer than a stock car that's pushed hard on 91. Taking any Subaru to the track regularly probably requires other reliability mods, but for street cars you can have fun pretty cheaply. That's what I recommend for anyone who doesn't have the budget or knowledge to go for the higher power levels because beyond that having to upgrade a turbo, intercooler and many other parts gets expensive fast.
Beautiful car. Still quite a costly proposition for a lot of people to do a build like this where you’re replacing many of the key components of the car. But I guess somewhat realistic compared to certain new car options.
Transmission is good, the earlier versions of the 6 speed had issues with one gear like 2-3 can’t remember, but they hold 800whp well. Apart from the clutch of course.
yeah i found it funny that he was saying the preconception of subarus is that they're unreliable and there is practically nothing stock on this car except the chassis itself lmao as if this is a good example of the average subaru out there on the streets
@flyingmonkeyofus69 well if you want power you need to spend the money. They are reliable stock, the issue is when people increase power without spending the money first. GC8s were more receptive to this and they are way lighter which meant lower power increases made a big difference. GD and beyond not so much. Add to that Subaru wasn't a massive company and they were trying to keep cost to consumer down while developing at the time.
Great video... Theres an intuitiveness with all vehicles. If you know you're car well you can push it. It's something you feel though.. it's not something taught. Ive gone from Hondas to Subarus which have all seen track days and ive yet to catastrophically pop one. Now I have an Alfa though which has also been tracked... Gluton for punishment I suppose.
Great info video. Except, it starts talking about building streetable, dependable, reasonable car. But then immediately go into choices (good ones) for a BUILT motor. I should hope you wouldn't have issues with this build. But is necessary for 550 safely. You gorra pay to play. Just had to complain outloud, my sti is nothing like his... Guess im jelous 😅

This is awesome info. Would love to see this type of vid for all their shop cars
Love these videos. Now lets see you guys put all this reliability to the test. Track videos, drag, touring tips. I would love to follow the story of this car and see all this information tested in the real world over alot of miles! Love the content ❤
I feel like Mike is giving me all the hot gossip. I could listen to this guy all day long.
350-400whp is perfect for a daily driver. I have 360whp on my STI and still has stock cars and emission compliant parts.
More subaruuuu content let’s gooooo!!!, grabbing a iag950 soon 6466ng and it’s party time🎉 keep the vids coming 🤘
Xclutch sprung twin organic clutch and flywheel is amazing best one hands down!
This guy is awesome, much better than the bs guys
lmao as a Californian i feel your pain - hey i built this nice fast car spending extra money on parts to keep it street legal with smog and all that, lets drive it!! oh wait the roads are poop and theres traffic everywhere yay :(
Dude. You're a technical genius. What a great video on a great GD STi build!
Legend has it that Mike K turns into a savage when partaking in fancy cocktails of the blue colored variety.
I am savage normally.
@@motoiq this is true.
i just noticed the scoop, actually looks really nice and oem.
What a humble sounding subaru. Use to Subarus with 300 wheel sounding so violent
Finally watched the whole thing! Thanks for the upload! 05's ARE the best!
Best real talk about EJ tuning 🔰💯
Yes thank you for the test drive!! My God I love the sound of that car it sounds seriously exotic!
Love this STI one of my favorite street/race one! You guys should let some of the other youtubers drive it in the canyons or something to get more views heading your way
I recently acquired a very nice stock 2004 sample. There are some great information here! Such great advice, especially under the car.
Same for
Me when I get home I’m gonna write stuff down and make a plan
Mike is such a nerd a love it! So much valuable info, thank you sir!
"Everything packages nicely as it is." 24:05
That should be a tuners standard. Package things to meet the end users needs.
Richard Hammond would have a blast with this build
Wow. That much response with that much power…. Don’t change a thing!
Thanks for visiting the "Dahm Den" that vid brought me here. Knowledgeable guy!! Awesome content.
Listening to this sooths me. Its a go to channel for a bedtime story. Keep up the great work
I watch this at least once a week to have mike’s knowledge etched into my mind. ahaha Have to bring my car to him once my powertrain warranty is up!
Mike Last Video:
Pinpoints every single flaw with the EJ motor from the factory and singlehandedly sets back Subie Hot Boi's goals for 500 reliable HP for less than $15K. VAPE sales plummet
Mike This Video:
Y'all are fools for sleeping on this reliable motor and the Blob Eyes WRX/STIs. Goes on to make the States most reliable and fun daily driver/weekend track car for his daughter (but really he built it for himself) 😉
Amazing what a driver mod will do haha.
Idk, most engines are relaible without all those mods. Seems like a lil cope by a subie fan. But I do love the awd system. Brake vectoring instead of diffs is godawful.
Daughter tracks it, I don't.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Awesome video!
Merch ordered, not much but hope it helps!!!!
Great video and knowledge! You're an icon in the community. Thank you for your contributions
In Kenya we r crying coz of tax 2 import simple things lyke this pistons so tht we cn built
Oil pickup, Head and case bolts, crank, valves, and a few more. but yeah.
Listen to @churchautotest! A lot of guys always brag about 600 stock bottom ends. They are pretty quiet when they blow up.
Loved this video, thank you for making so much great content, especially Subaru related stuff. 👍😊
Mikes knowledge base 👌👌👌
Love watching your guys video's. I always come away with something to think about and learn.
You talk about the issues of a flat engine. I am curious what Porsche does to fix, or work around these issues? Love your work!
The Porsche engine is built a lot stronger.
Beautiful car. Still quite a costly proposition for a lot of people to do a build like this where you’re replacing many of the key components of the car. But I guess somewhat realistic compared to certain new car options.
I think Subaru's only contribution to this car was the chassis. Like everything else on it is aftermarket. lol
@@flyingmonkeyofus69 well, he even braced the chassis. LOL
Chassis is okay, nothing great. AWD is the selling point. Not a fan of McStruts either.
Beautiful car and a great channel full of knowledge every time.Thank you guys
Great build, thanks for sharing! Looks fast indeed!
Love seeing Mike drive the cars at the end of the day. Cool seeing him enjoy and rip on them.
Not the crossover I would have expected, but I’m sure happy it happened.
So much great info! Always liked these for their CG. Y'all should try out the Re-71RS
The craftsmenship is top tier
500 hp is excellent. Nice. Great work.
