    What gets me is the ending, the song gets audibly more happy and upbeat as he says it'll be over soon. Like the end of everything is a welcome relief to the world we're living in, embracing in the end with melanchonic gladness, bittersweet and peaceful.

    The line that sticks out to me and is always just overlooked is the Deadpool self awareness. Like these moments where you know very well that you don't want to be doing what you're doing but you're trapped in this story that someone else wrote and have to keep playing your part. Plus for a fourth wall break there's plenty of characters to choose from but Deadpool specifically is very suicidal and wanting to end the cycle ... such a deep existential dread line and no one even notices.

    A stream of consciousness. No filters. I’m addicted to these reaction videos because it confirms my opinion that Bo is a genius and I learn things along the way. Bo makes me feel safe.

    The atmosphere Bo created for this song is so intimate that I thought he was about to whisper the secret of the universe to me. Then, when some of the lyrics gave me actual chills, I realized he probably did. I just have to decipher the message now.
    Looking at you, I think maybe you had a similar experience while listening to this excerpt.

    He doesn't even need to be a comedian, he would do well as a regular mainstream musician....

      Oh yeah with his voice. But somehow I think that would be his worst nightmare haha

      It’s funny but I’ve shared Bo with a lot of people in my life and I’ve stopped introducing him as a comedian bc it doesn’t make sense in snippets. His best stuff isn’t hilarious, it’s deeply uncomfortable to the point you have to laugh instead of cry. You have to see all of Bo to really get it

    • @LeeannG
      @LeeannG 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To be fair, I think he started more in a comedic pocket, and back then his voice wasn’t as good as it is now. He seems like he’s done a lot of voice work, and he could definitely make it as a musician now - especially when listening to the outtakes (my favorite is The Chicken)

    • @TrackpadProductions
      @TrackpadProductions 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't honestly think he's really a comedian anymore. He writes songs about depressing, painful realities to an audience of people who think that having clever wordplay and observations makes something a joke. Because laughing about something is less painful than taking it seriously. This is just one of the few songs where he deliberately pulls away all of that, and just lets you sit with the uncomfortable reality he's laying bare.

    • @LeeannG
      @LeeannG 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TrackpadProductions I’d say more of a hybrid then? It’s just so hard for me to hear songs like “Jeffrey bezos”, “5 years”, and “popcorn”… or even “sexting” and not think of him as a comedian lol

  • @jlerrickson
    @jlerrickson 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

    I think "derealization" is important to understanding this one: it doesn't matter what we think about the individual things listed in this song if we're so detached from the reality of our surroundings that we drive our species into the ground. The inverse is true as well: feeling so overwhelmed by the big picture that you detach and focus on the minutiae. Either way, the "funny feeling" is that something is wrong, whether you care to investigate it or not. "Music to drown by" is the phrase that comes to mind with this one.

    Possibly my favorite of all time with Bo. So raw and boiled down yet one of his deepest. Layered genius is par for the course at this point but... dang! So haunting and beautiful, and even terrifying, and yet still making me laugh and feel better about things.

  • @joshrobertson929
    @joshrobertson929 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    It’s funny, this is one of my absolute favorite Bo songs, but one that I generally don’t like watching reactions to. Maybe because it took me (and takes most people) multiple listens to really understand everything he’s saying. So most reactors I’ve seen for this song don’t really grasp the full meaning on the first listen. I think you understood it better than most!
    This song is so so relatable for me, and for so many people because of the context. Inside was released a year after the pandemic started, so all of this was filmed within the first year of the pandemic. No one really knew how it was gonna turn out. Was this gonna end in a couple of years, or was it the “new normal?” Did human existence just take a drastic shift that we’re not gonna be able to fix? All of these things we focus so much of our attention on (Logan Paul, Deadpool’s self-awareness, the live-action Lion King, the Pepsi Halftime Show, etc) are meaningless bullshit. We’re surrounded by irony (gift shop at a gun range and a mass shooting at the mall, book on getting better hand delivered by a drone, the world at our fingertips, the ocean at our door). There was this quiet yet unbearably loud thought that resonated through many, many people: What’s the point of all of this meaningless bullshit when something like a tiny little virus can come in and turn the world sideways? What’s the point of anything? The pandemic, the constant threat of nuclear war, global warming, 7 years left on the doomsday clock, mass shootings, corrupt presidents and politicians, what’s the point of trudging through life when all of these enormous crises are looming over our heads?
    And Bo eloquently wraps that entire feeling up in a campfire song. He’s a generational genius.

    THIS is my favourite Bo Burnham song, and the one that sent me to TH-cam to look for reactions and commentaries, eventually leading me to Ren and all of you amazing reactors.
    I live with That Funny Feeling; it's everywhere; it's in every breath I take, it's in every corner of the world; it invades my dreams. Even worse now since the arrival of Covid.

  • @lavachebeadsman
    @lavachebeadsman 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I've listened to this song more times than I should admit, I think I finally get it. You got it about 50% right:
    Bo thinks the world is ending. Not metaphorically--but literally, climate change, we're all going to kill each other with guns and bombs, or else we're going to be our own ends through the madness that is the only correct response to such a situation. And in the face of this, what is the culture's response? The irreverence/faux-(and-FOX-sponsored)-nihilism of Deadpool, Etsy agitprop, "representation" in big-budget entertainment and marketing. All this stuff that used to stand for change but now stands for the interests of big business and commerce, which itself is propelling climate change, war, and a lot of other bad shit.
    The "solutions" the world is offering us are laughable in the face of the actual problems we have, and there is no meaningful way to oppose the trajectory things have taken in the 21st century. "Technological breakthroughs" are a massive part of "that funny feeling"--the appearance of progress ("stunning 8k resolution meditation app) when in fact, given what we're facing, it's no progress at all (in honor of the revolution, it's half-off at the gap) .. This is a crazy-dark song.

    As a neurodivergent, agoraphobia kid who was also an extrovert since the 70s, this song is both melancholic and hopeful. I have lived through so many ends of the world. There are now drones to deliver me books.
    It's the eternal dance of progres.
    I am old enough to remember other doomsday clocks.
    The seven years has me more worried than some other but powerless to change it no matter how much I sort my bins.

    I absolutely adore this song more every time I listen to it. It feels like the "We Didn't Start the Fire" of our generation. Highlighting the absurdities and ironies from the time it was written alongside the constantly present existential dread of progressing climate change and even technology (echoing Welcome to the Internet), leading to the likely disassociation of an entire generation. All wrapped up in a perfectly concise "that funny feeling". The entire special is genius, but this is one of the standouts.

    Thank you for an insightful reaction! I grew up watching Bo Burnham when he first got on TH-cam and seeing how he progressed to Inside has just been a rollercoaster. I mean, he’s a genius! I’m excited to see your thoughts on the rest of the special too, I’ll definitely be watching!
    P.S- I know you started reacting to Polyphia and I want to throw out there that if you like them you should definitely check out Unprocessed. Barely anyone reacts to them on here and they’re awesome! They opened for Polyphia’s tour earlier this year, I got to see them live and they are phenomenal! Very similar to Polyphia but with vocals! The Longing, Abandoned, Deadrose, and Rain are all good places to start!

    "Stunning 8K resolution, meditation app" -- Why would a meditation app, something that you should probably have your eyes closed while running so as to not get distracted by visual stimuli, ever need to be upscaled to that ridiculous resolution? It's just utterly absurd... and yet it's par for the course for our world...
    "In honor of the revolution, it's half-off at the Gap" -- Since when did the Gap ever need a reason for its half-off bargains? And in honor of the revolution, of all things, as well? Again, kind of absurd...
    "Deadpool self-awareness, loving parents, harmless fun" -- Deadpool is a fictional character who's aware of the fact that he's a fictional character, and he's also a complete maniac straddling the line between occasional goofball, suicidal mess, and murder-happy sociopath who's way too egregiously violent... but sure, expose your kids to the funny murder guy and then have your kids ask you to take them with you to the shooting-range so they can pretend that they are Deadpool... What's the harm? It's just harmless fun, right?
    "The backlash to the backlash to the thing that's just begun" -- This just immediately brings my mind to the Jan 6th mess... that thing happened, the backlash was immediate, people were rightly outraged, they demanded that those responsible be held fully responsible... and at the same time, the backlash to the backlash had already started: Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Ben Shapiro, Marjory Taylor Greene, Steve Bannon, etc... they were already lashing back at the backlash that they knew would be coming...
    "The surgeon general's pop-up shop" -- Imagine clicking around online and getting a pop-up. Eh, nothing too unusual about that. It's a pop-up for medicine and drugs and stuff? Sure, those kinda scams bombard us all the time. It's sent out by the highest authority on medical treatment in the US? Wtf is this alternate reality we've stumbled into...?
    "Robert Iger's face" -- There is something deeply upsetting about the fact that the face of Disney, THE family company with THE children's movies, is (or was) a heartless, soulless corporatist only in it for the money...
    "Discount Etsy agitprop" -- Mass-produced and commercialized bootleg versions of communist propaganda sold as cheap interior design props to enrich some capitalist... Marx, Che and Castro are spinning in their graves...
    "Bugles' take on race" -- Yes, that's definitely what we need to turn this whole mess around, isn't it?/sarcasm
    "Female Colonel Sanders, easy answers, civil war" -- Either, 1) the conservative demographic's usual overreactions to nonsense stuff like the M&M mascots getting less sexualized, or 2) the commercial sector's usual virtue signalling, which includes putting up a font of inclusivity and diversity and tolerance and stuff, while remaining as cruddy as ever; an "easy answer" to complex problems, or 3) just running down the list of weird af concepts... Kentucky isn't exactly known for its progressive spirit, so female Colonel Sanders would be disingenuous from so many angles; there are very few "easy answers" that are legitimately worth the air you expel when you say them; "civil war" is just plain an oxymoron, like "military intelligence."
    "The whole world at your fingertips, the ocean at your door" -- Here we are, computers, laptops, phones and so on with all the world's knowledge, and yet the oceans are rising... much thanks to the same technology that gave us all the world's knowledge to begin with... and to add another layer to it, many people wouldn't ever have even learned about the climate breakdown without the internet...
    "The live-action Lion King, the Pepsi Halftime Show" -- There is no "live-action Lion King", there's only a 3dcg movie that was billed and marketed as the "live-action" version of the Lion King, and we all just kind of went along with the marketing... and yet the 100% fake live-action Lion King movie is still somehow less fake than the halftime show at the Super Bowl...
    "Twenty-thousand years of this, seven more to go" -- Three years now... that climate breakdown doomsday clock keeps ticking... and it's not looking like we've got any intentions of stopping it before it's too late...
    "Carpool Karaoke, Steve Aoki, Logan Paul" -- Boy, that would be some carpool karaoke... Wanna body surf and get caked in the car? Or would you prefer singing about taking selfies with a people who've committed suicide?
    "A gift shop at the gun range, a mass shooting at the mall" -- ...I don't think this one requires elaboration...
    "Reading Pornhub's terms of service" -- Welcome to the world's gathering spot for smut, depravity, revenge sex videos and other such fun activities and pastimes; here's a legal document you should read in its totality to get you properly hot and bothered for a start.
    "Going for a drive, and obeying all the traffic laws in Grand Theft Auto V" -- Have you ever come home after a really bad day, feeling like you need to relax a bit, so you get some absurdly violent video game started, only to realize that "venting steam" is not the same as "winding down" and what you need right now is the latter; some normalcy to get away from what's happened over the course of the day -- so you take this absurdly violent video game and make it an outlet for the peace and quiet that you're denied in real life? Just asking...
    "Full agoraphobic, losing focus, cover blown" -- Whoopsie! Slipping up and ʀᴇᴠᴇᴀʟɪɴɢ sᴏᴍᴇ ʀᴀᴛʜᴇʀ ᴘᴇʀsᴏɴᴀʟ ɪssᴜᴇs ᴛᴏ ᴀɴ ᴇɴᴛɪʀᴇ ᴡᴏʀʟᴅ ᴛʜᴀᴛ's sɪᴛᴛɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ʟɪsᴛᴇɴɪɴɢ ᴛᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴇxᴘᴏsᴇ ʏᴏᴜʀsᴇʟғ there, huh, Bo?
    "A book on getting better hand-delivered by a drone" -- This is just so messed up... But coupled with the above line, it's even worse: If you're suffering from agoraphobia, then human contact may be the last thing you want... But if you've already been isolating yourself for a long time, say, 5 years or so, and forcibly had to go back into isolation just when you were starting to feel okay with the idea of re-entering society again, then human contact, even fleeting and shallow, may have been just what you were looking for to keep the existential dread at bay... instead you got a drone handing you a self-help book, which probably included advice about reaching out to other people...
    "Total disassociation, fully out of your mind" -- Depersonalization is a disassociation disorder which makes it feel like you're separated from your body or like your body is not your own or like you are just an observer to your own body and actions. Ergo, it can very much feel like you are literally outside of your own mind.
    "Googling 'derealization,' hating what you find" -- Derealization is a disassociation disorder which makes it feel like you're separated from the world around you or like you're dreaming or like nothing around you is actually real...
    "That unapparent summer air in early fall" -- ...why did I decide to do this analysis while off my meds? For that matter, why don't I have meds in the first place when I know that I probably really do need them?
    "The quiet comprehending of the ending of it all" -- It's not going to get any better, is it? The ones in power aren't planning on averting the worst-case scenario, are they? People are way too unwilling to change their lifestyles if it means giving up their comfort and luxury, aren't they? We're actually approaching the end of the existence of human civilization, aren't we?
    "Hey, what can you say? We were overdue... But it'll be over soon, you wait" -- Heh. Yeah, I guess we were overdue for a pandemic, what with us having a globalized world but so poor protection against one should it act up. But, yeah, it'll be over soon. A thing of the past. We just need wait a little longer... Heh. Yeah, I guess we're overdue for a reckoning, considering that we've been living way above and beyond sustainable means for so long. But, yeah, soon it'll all come crashing down. We'll be a thing of the past. Just you wait a little longer...
    "There it is, again, that funny feeling" -- Funnily enough, that feeling is not "funny" at all... Cognitive dissonance. Existential dread. Detachment. Disassociation. Disbelief at all of this absurdity along the lines of "this can't be real" or "what the hell is this shit?" What that feeling is may differ on a case-to-case basis, but still... there it is again... that funny feeling...
