I know this video is 6 years old - but I just got a 91 RM250 - it looks pretty much identical to your 90. I have the exact same problem. I've already ruled out the reeds, so I'm moving on to the piston and cylinder next. I'm hoping to just replace the piston and rings, but we'll see... I'll watch the follow up on this - it's quite helpful so far, just in that it gives me confidence to work on the cylinder.
Nice man! You hit the nail on the head when you said your not a mechanic. More people should be doing this kind of maintenance themselves as you've just proved that it can be done without any mechanical training at all. Video angle was great, its a GoPro right? She looks like a nice clean bike for a 90! I'm restoring a well used and abused 89 RM250. Advice to *ALL* motocross riders, buy a manual, you'll be very surprised how easy 2 strokes are to work on and more surprised on the cash you save.
for removing wrist pins, idk if they are a standard size for all 250's, but when I pulled my trailblazer 250 apart, i used the female end of a 6 inch long socket extension. tapped with a rubber mallet where the socket would clip on. worked well
It depends on you plans. Chances are if it runs then you should be able to make more than $200 if you parted out. If you want it to keep then - check compression, rims for bends/missing spokes, check the front forks for leakage, radiators for fluid/leakage/damage, make sure it has a vin number, see if the wheels move side to side meaning the wheel bearings are shot, if you can ride it make sure it shifts through all the gears, how easy does it start, and then over all condition.
Thanks, it makes working on things and using the camera so much easier. The only problem is that I can't tell if the angle is good until I watch it on the computer. Also I keep forgetting its on my head I bump into things every couple of minutes.
Sweet videos man keep them up camera angle is great👍👍your videos are like the best ones around keep them up👌👌👍👍personally I think your a great mechanic keep up the videos👌👌
How do you know if you need a top end rebuild? My 2000 rm 250 has started having a lot of white exhaust and I had a kx60 that was doing the same thing, my dad and I rebuilt it when that was happening
good video but you should clear some of the clutter around your projects it seems you have to step over everything try to organize your self and put your parts in small cans or Tupperware bowls you will find it much more enjoyable than kicking your nuts and bolts across the floor...good stuff tho and good luck with the rm. I have an 03 in supermoto trim that is pretty trick...will post some videos soon!!!
good video ...what is that side plate on the head called cause when I toke mine of the gasket riped and I cant order another one till I know what its called
When you put a 2 stroke engine back together do you have to adjust the power valves like the intake and exhaust valve clearance on a 4 stroke? And anything else to adjust? I'm new to 2 strokes and can't seem to find the answer . Great video. Thanks
2 strokes don't have valves. they use reeds. The "power valve" is adjusted by using different strength springs. the stiffer the spring, the slower the valve opens up. the softer, the faster. It shouldn't need any adjusting/reseting unless the control cover was opened and messed with (like if you put the gears back together incorrectly). Other than that, nothing really should need to be done. Its a 2 stroke. Slap a piston and rings in her and she'll run.
that piston is a 1 ring? every 250 i had, had 2 rings on it maybe the new one will have 2 it would have a lot more comp if it did the bike looks good for its age though aand your a good mech man keep on riding!!
+gatecitydj just the gasket sitting under the cylinder head but make sure the you scrape off all of the old gasket or you will run into the same problem, and don't let any fall into the bottom end.
Why I got rid of all my friends. I was so sick of everyone's F.ing opinions especially when they don't have nothing. Don't let the big mouth's get to you.
Hey man. I just found a rmx 250 for $200 on my local craigslist and would kinda like to know what you would go though or check on it. They say it runs and everything, but Im pretty damn skeptical at $200.
@MoDz374 here is a suggestion, get your parents to help-- get them to go on craigslist and post an ad saying "free motorcycle removal". Say in the ad that you want dirtbikes and atvs.
Great video mate, I'm going to put some new rings in my 08 rm 250 this weekend, could you let me know what torque settings you used on cylinder and head? Cheers dude
Video angle is good! Just take both circlips out. Because when u bang on that trying to get it out, it's just hitting that clip. And not the wrist pin lol . But good vid
tanx for the video, very appreciate. I don't think it's a good idea to knock on the piston for the crank bering... i willt try to use a small vise with the long box
Just bought this same exact bike. Thanx for the confidence to do my own top end.
I love your videos I stay up until 3 or 4 in the morning watching them. You inspire me. Keep up the good work

Hey mate I'm doing my ring and piston for the first time myself and watched your video for help. Thank for posting it. I will let you know how it goes

Sounds like a tank. It's amazing how some machines can still run with problems like that. Thanks for watching.
i enjoy watching the build video with process and how to style , you did a good video , i like the angle allot
your a good mechanic as fare of your abillity and the camera angil is great
Not a bad video, its going to help me a bunch as I'm doing piston, rings and power valves on both my 250 and my sons 85.
Sweet videos man keep them up camera angle is great👍👍your videos are like the best ones around keep them up👌👌👍👍personally I think your a great mechanic keep up the videos👌👌
Connor Macinnes sarcasm?
@slimjim119 im taking it to a motorcycle machinist tomorrow to get suggestions. Thanks for watching.
finally someone with brains... to use a go pro so we can see what you see :D great minds think alike
@BIKEandSNOW4Life I would check the compression

Did you clean the power valve? Im in the process of replacing my top end on my 97 250.
And the play with the rod is fine. It won't move side to side when the piston is in the cylinder
Your videos are really helpfull 👍
@dillonmitchum124 the story was that one of the previous owners bought the wrong piston or rings and tried to make it work. Thanks for watching.
Got a question... how much would u pay for a rm250 with a blown top end???
good video, just doing a piston replacment on a 2000 rm250. you need to get some snap ring plyers, homie
nice video men..... nice idea for the camara.....
good video ...what is that side plate on the head called cause when I toke mine of the gasket riped and I cant order another one till I know what its called
is that side plate with the four bolts the power valve cover??
Yes it is.

Christ man, your comment is so inspiring. Thanks for watching.
Do these wrist pins have c-clips holding them in?

Me personally I would probably not check too much because I know I could get my money back plus more parting it out if needed.
Quick question. On a top end issue like a bad head gasket, do you need to replace all the gaskets top and bottom?
+gatecitydj just the gasket sitting under the cylinder head but make sure the you scrape off all of the old gasket or you will run into the same problem, and don't let any fall into the bottom end.
I just bought a 98 rm250 is it easy to remove like yours
Really helpful videos just have a question i have a 1990 rm250 and i cant get the carb to idle any suggestions what jets/needle should i use
Snipe Moto look it up 90s bikes were ment for racing just starting and going they weren't really made to idle.
My 89 RM 250 wouldn't idle also. Took carburetor apart and cleaned all the jets. The main jet was clogged. Now it idles
Why I got rid of all my friends. I was so sick of everyone's F.ing opinions especially when they don't have nothing. Don't let the big mouth's get to you.
That’s fucking sad

your video is very helpful thanks
a hone would be fine and on the crank side to side is fine, no up and down play that means a new crank.

keep up the good work

your not bad you do a good job and the video is fine :)
over bore if piston is wore out cylinder should be also give a port and polish
Video angle is good! Just take both circlips out. Because when u bang on that trying to get it out, it's just hitting that clip. And not the wrist pin lol . But good vid
And don't let anyone say no.. If u got the money saved up just buy it.. Had to earn and save to get my first bike
olá. Tenho uma susuki rmz 250cc hoje fui andar com ela e notei que pinga uma espuma branca pelo respiro do motor. O que será?
Great video!
i hope i can fix bikes as good as you can when im older i plan to be a dirt bike mechanic im 12..........
@MoDz374 if anyone gives you a free bike then you can get practice taking it apart and see how it works.
tanx for the video, very appreciate. I don't think it's a good idea to knock on the piston for the crank bering... i willt try to use a small vise with the long box
@zzgeorgez not a bar job at all.
Good vid nice bike I have a 1996 rm250

Thanks, good job!
that hammerin on the wrist pin is great for the low end rod bearing!!!!! LOL.....
