Great restoration videos. My favorite part is that you edit your bloopers, it adds more fun to the whole video and no one else does it. Final cooking recipes are a plus. A warm hug and greetings from Argentina!
I have found when working old brass that it does not like being worked hot and if you quench it it recrystalises and becomes brittle. I have found if you heat it up to red hot and allow it to cool slowly it can be shaped or even hammered into shape, but work hardens very quickly so the heating and slow cooling will have to be repeated often. As always beautiful work and better luck with the brass next time.

6:07 Armorer here. I've seen similar before. Hot brass bends - too hot brass breaks. Basically, if you have heated it above the zinc's melting point (around 420 C), you better do NOT hit it violently until it has cooled back below the tin melting point (around 230 C) or the alloy disintegrates. Ask me how I know :-) EDIT: Also, brass (like all copper alloys) work-hardens quite a lot and becomes brittle. Multiple heating-quenching cycles are needed during work. Do not try to work it all in one heat as you would with iron.
Thank you for information! You know, it seems to me that it was not pure brass, because of the grainy texture and there was little viscosity in it, as in attempt No. 3.
@@ScrewsAndTools Seen that before. That's actually the signs of "burned down" brass, that has been heated too much and worked while hot. Usually a couple of quenching cycles can save it _IF_ it has not yet started delaminating. By the time the cracks appear (as it happened yo you), it's far gone. (That's the"ask me how I know" part, BTW - my first brass forging attempts were... hilarious)
I was gonna say, that I've had the same thing happen to me with brass, in spite of numerous and often heating /cooling. I came to the conclusion that some brass is just "brass" depending on it's point of origin. In other words your brass may have had other alloys in it that contributed to it breaking. Traditional brass is copper and zinc, we know. I'm assuming purity of either and possible additional whatever thrown in may be the case with some brass . Thoughts ?
@@notfeedynotlazy So I had to heat the brass twice and then only bend it? For example, the third attempt was successful and it seems to me that the reason is the very structure of the brass, maybe I'm wrong.
@@tfries1607 Yes, I agree with you, and I can add that usually (ordinary) brass is heated and stretched. And it seems to me that some other metal or alloy was added to my brass. But again, I see this for the first time.
I saw the test time segment with the wood in the bench vise and immediately thought of the castle scene with Blinkin from “Robin Hood men in tights.” Well done as usual!
Interesting description; from the looks of the original blade and what was left of the guard, I believe the sword is a cutlass, a shortsword that was popular amongst sailors and pirates 😉 While the new guard looks nice, a cutlass typically sported a solid cupped or basket shaped guard. Look it up, there is plenty of reference material online
If you have a blast furnace you could always make a new guard that way if you have enough scrap brass or copper to do so, it was unfortunate that it kept breaking
That’s the best scabbard I’ve seen you make my friend it looks awesome and the blade is a beast. I love the brass work and the ageing looks amazing. Just one question why do you heat the brass first then cool it down in water is it to make it more flexible when bending. Thank you for another awesome video cannot wait till the next one you are a master at your work 👍👍👍😊😊😊♥️
Hello! Thanks for attention. If you are going to work with the accessories of the scabbard, you definitely need to heat it, then it becomes soft. I also advise you to heat the brass rivets in a, then they are softer and it is better to work with them.

Excellent job and very pleased that you include the setbacks. Well done.
Wel mister what else can I say but you are a Master of knife and sword 🎉🎉
If I learned anything for this video, and videos like this one is, trial and error can only soon lead to ultimate perfection!

Glad you didn't keep the original guard. Looks like someone tried to make some scrap art. Your guard is 100% better👍
Beautiful
Nice pirate short sword
very tidy, looks great
Another beauty from the man I have dubbed, "The Master"! Thank you !
I love the Blinken from Robin hood men in tights scene you almost recreated 😆 with the sword fight with a pillar scene lol
I’m just going to pretend the neighbor was practicing with a large musical instrument. :)

A craftsman in his element. Outstanding sir!

beautiful restoration mister
Very nice,it looks as an old knife but in good shape, it has the patina of time, thanks for sharing.
A job well done sir ! 😎👍
I love the antiquing.
I CANT BELIEVE YOU THREW THE ORIGINAL GUARD AWAY YOU MONSTER
It's not original, it was a piece of brass from a chandelier or something else
@@ScrewsAndTools why didn't you restore it?
@@koudacyen Because the rest of the parts would have to be soldered to it, and this is already unsafe and unreliable.
Great job on the sword keep up the good work
Wonderful❤❤❤
You made it more original than its first time :P
I wish I had an interesting hobby... or any hobby at that. Subscribe to this man!

What a small tang for such a sword... I just hope it doesn't break on the person using it. A great restoration as always though, товарищ!
