- Hello folks! Today I want to show you my new restoration project. I found this rusty short sword at flea market. I’m not sure, it's old broken sword or something new handmade, but in any cases it's so interesting item for me. Well, let's start restoration.

First of all, I dismantled the old part of the handle. Then, via rust remover liquid I removed rust and dirty. Then washed, dried and oiled it.
Then metalworking, sanding and adjustment began. I did not polish it, carbon steel. I made new bevels, corrected and etched the blade in a solution of 10% nitric acid.
Then I started making brass guards, the first option I cracked twice. I had to do it all over again. Completed successfully for the second time. I soldered the guard for greater reliability.
The wood for the handle was chosen by beech, rivets brass. At the end there is a brass tip under the strap, fixed with a thread to the shank.
Also I made from wood new scabbard, and then covered it with genuine leather. The accessories of the scabbard were made of brass. Final step was lanyard for handle. I hope you will enjoy this restoration project. As usual, I made interesting test for you! Thank you for attention.
Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!

Great restoration videos. My favorite part is that you edit your bloopers, it adds more fun to the whole video and no one else does it. Final cooking recipes are a plus.
A warm hug and greetings from Argentina!
Hello! Thank you for attetnion and interest! ^_^
I have found when working old brass that it does not like being worked hot and if you quench it it recrystalises and becomes brittle. I have found if you heat it up to red hot and allow it to cool slowly it can be shaped or even hammered into shape, but work hardens very quickly so the heating and slow cooling will have to be repeated often. As always beautiful work and better luck with the brass next time.
A whole lot of patience needed with that restoration, turned out great, respect!!! 👍👏
That brass breaking hurt to watch. But you continued on and made an amazing work of art! You never cease to amaze me, keep it up!
Thank you!
One of your best ones to date, i like the aged effect you gave it... good job buddy
Thank you!
If I learned anything for this video, and videos like this one is, trial and error can only soon lead to ultimate perfection!
Glad you didn't keep the original guard. Looks like someone tried to make some scrap art. Your guard is 100% better👍
Wel mister what else can I say but you are a Master of knife and sword 🎉🎉
I love the antiquing.
Beautiful
Nice pirate short sword

Excellent work friend. I am always impressed with your skills both in repairing tools as well as scabbard making.

Love the sound when the pipe is getting filled in.
The bottle blocking the sparks almost look like a bulb cut in half
Just fantastic from start to finish!
A craftsman in his element. Outstanding sir!
Thank you for attetnion!
Another great job! Enjoyed your work.
Very nice,it looks as an old knife but in good shape, it has the patina of time, thanks for sharing.
Liked the sound of the rust remover filling the tube. Nice restauration. :-)
Brilliant idea and it looks lovely and gorgeous. You really a absolutely great job
I love the Blinken from Robin hood men in tights scene you almost recreated 😆 with the sword fight with a pillar scene lol
Great work. Loved this one the most. Cheers
I liked it, it looks aged, great job congratulations
Good job.
I saw the test time segment with the wood in the bench vise and immediately thought of the castle scene with Blinkin from “Robin Hood men in tights.” Well done as usual!
good one, nice resto, keep safe...
Nice job. Consider putting magnets in top of the sheath to hold the blade.
Thank you!

My bother. That was a fabulous restoration. Your the magic man.
Thank you so much!
You made it more original than its first time :P
Congratulations, another masterpiece.
Thanks for the video
Thank you!
Very nice
It was a little funny, when you take the brass handle)) already bended
6:07 Armorer here. I've seen similar before. Hot brass bends - too hot brass breaks. Basically, if you have heated it above the zinc's melting point (around 420 C), you better do NOT hit it violently until it has cooled back below the tin melting point (around 230 C) or the alloy disintegrates. Ask me how I know :-)
EDIT: Also, brass (like all copper alloys) work-hardens quite a lot and becomes brittle. Multiple heating-quenching cycles are needed during work. Do not try to work it all in one heat as you would with iron.
Thank you for information! You know, it seems to me that it was not pure brass, because of the grainy texture and there was little viscosity in it, as in attempt No. 3.
@@ScrewsAndTools Seen that before. That's actually the signs of "burned down" brass, that has been heated too much and worked while hot. Usually a couple of quenching cycles can save it _IF_ it has not yet started delaminating. By the time the cracks appear (as it happened yo you), it's far gone. (That's the"ask me how I know" part, BTW - my first brass forging attempts were... hilarious)
I was gonna say, that I've had the same thing happen to me with brass, in spite of numerous and often heating /cooling. I came to the conclusion that some brass is just "brass" depending on it's point of origin. In other words your brass may have had other alloys in it that contributed to it breaking. Traditional brass is copper and zinc, we know. I'm assuming purity of either and possible additional whatever thrown in may be the case with some brass . Thoughts ?
@@notfeedynotlazy So I had to heat the brass twice and then only bend it? For example, the third attempt was successful and it seems to me that the reason is the very structure of the brass, maybe I'm wrong.
@@tfries1607 Yes, I agree with you, and I can add that usually (ordinary) brass is heated and stretched. And it seems to me that some other metal or alloy was added to my brass. But again, I see this for the first time.
Outstanding
So awesome You did a great job.
And you did great you always inspire me to do something like that
INCREDIBLE restoration 👍👏 Friend. Congratulations and salutations from Belgium 😉🇧🇪🖐️

Awesome as always.
Cool project, well done.😊
So cool!
Thank you!
Great job 👍 well done
I CANT BELIEVE YOU THREW THE ORIGINAL GUARD AWAY YOU MONSTER
It's not original, it was a piece of brass from a chandelier or something else
@@ScrewsAndTools why didn't you restore it?
@@koudacyen Because the rest of the parts would have to be soldered to it, and this is already unsafe and unreliable.
Good job.. bro!! I like

good restore👍👍
Excellent restoration my friend!
Thank you!
Awesome always cool stuff always 😎 👌 👍
Interesting description; from the looks of the original blade and what was left of the guard, I believe the sword is a cutlass, a shortsword that was popular amongst sailors and pirates 😉
While the new guard looks nice, a cutlass typically sported a solid cupped or basket shaped guard.
Look it up, there is plenty of reference material online
AMAZING restoration
Thank you!
@@ScrewsAndTools You´re Welcome
Your killing it,great resto mod .just keep it up.kudos 😎😎😎👍👍👍
Thank you Tom!
3:30 it sucks up sparks like a reverse dragon
I wish I had an interesting hobby... or any hobby at that. Subscribe to this man!
Thank you!
Fez um bom trabalho mas ficou doido. Kkk
awesome restoratiom
If you have a blast furnace you could always make a new guard that way if you have enough scrap brass or copper to do so, it was unfortunate that it kept breaking
It's a very nice job, i love it so lot.
The neighbors fight back 😂
Hello Bob! Thank you for attention and humor)) Stay safe ^_^
That's a nice little sink/drain for dismembering of bodies...if need be.
