Moss Terrarium Build ( Pet Jumping Spiders New Home )

- I turned a basketball display case into a really cool moss terrarium. This is a major upgrade for my jumping spider. For this terrarium I created a false bottom with aquarium rocks, then made a leaf layer, followed by some sphagnum moss and finally some bio activated soil. Then i put many kinds of moss inside. My jumping spider will love it.

Crickets have been known to kill spiders so don't keep them together. its best to feed them one to two times a week and take the uneaten pray out 24hrs later. Jumpers have a big appetite and will normally go after pray as soon as they see it.

Thank you for letting him know, I got momentarily scared for the spider. I also recommend springtails to help keep the enclosure clean in addition to the isopods. They also like a variety of food. Sometimes my jumpers will start to refuse crickets if they have had too many (even if I gut load them differently). They also like wax worms, mealworms (for adult spiders), but I find they particularly like bluebottle flies.

@@TechplantChannel Awesome. Thank you! I just caught my first jumping spider in my yard and built him a makeshift enclosure. I'm trying to learn as much as I can. It's been fun watching him stalk his prey when feeding him. It may be frowned upon but I've been feeding him flies I catch and worms from the yard. (although I'm sure that's what he was eating in the "wild")
@robbye01 yeah some ppl do not like that but I fed them wild bugs as well since I caught mine in the wild. I'm guessing it's a bigger problem for a captive spider to eat wild bugs from a place it's not from where their are pathogens it's not used to if that makes sense.
Your jumper may be hanging out more on top of the terrarium on the lid because hes afraid of the larger insects (crickets, isopods). All jumping spiders seem to be different as far as prey goes. Some will go after and eat larger insects and others wont. If they are scared of them they will avoid them at all costs and will stay at the top of the enclosure. Once you remove the larger insects you will observe them spending more time on the bottom or in other areas. I discovered this with two different male phidippus audax that I had. I do love the look of the moss in the enclosure. And it gives them something textured to grip onto, especially when they get older and the little hairs on the bottom of their feet start to flatten out.

He probably likes the roof of the terrarium because jumping spiders like to build their webs/nests in the top of their home, which is why it's preferred for them to have homes with a kind of front-door feature. The best thing I can find explaining it is the jumping spider video by the channel Snake Discovery. They say it's best for the door/ halfway / 3 quarter opening terrariums so when you open the terrarium you don't destroy their nest.

You shouldn’t have the top as the lid because that’s how they make their webs on the top so make the front or make a longer top so they have space and you don’t break their web

Jumpers are arboreal spending the majority of their time climbing. Sure your cage looks awesome, but it will spend most of it's time on top. They will build a silk hammock, or pouch to live in towards the top of the cage. Most of the time right where the lid and side meet. Causing you to disturb it Everytime you open the lid. So a front opening door can be better with some spiders. Also like already said. You don't want to leave food in it's enclosure. Crickets are known to munch on the spiders.

I just wanted to say: be careful with introducing foraged plant matter and insects because they could have been exposed to pesticides, which causes neurological problems in spiders.

So not sure anyone said this but a few things.
Jumpers are arboreal spooders. They like to hang out up top. So you want your cage to open from the bottom or the side because they like to build their nest up high.
2. Be careful getting wood or moss from outside (order it online) these can carry bugs (mites) or other things that you dont know if itll hurt your spooder.
3. Be careful with leaving crickets in. They can bite and can kill or hurt your jumper.
4. You need vents. You want at LEAST one vent on a tank/terrarium etc. They need air flow.
Hope that helps for future tank building.

Hows he doing? I think I heard too much moisture can kill spidie. Once a days seems excessive. Just a though. I found one two weeks ago. He’s in a fruit fly, plastic jar with the mesh lid. He has a piece of bark standing up,with inch peat bottom. Makes his home on the back of the bark at top.
They love to sun bath.
Stays on warm kitchen window sill and gets sun. About ur size too. Good luck.
Hes alive and well, hard thing for me is knowing if hes eating well tho. the bugs go missing but i dont know if they just burrow somewhere and die! his terrarium actually gets pretty dry. some of the moss is straight up drying out so he should be ok. actually staying on sun can much easier kill spider, then overmoisture.

Wow its beautiful but you could've used screen mess instead of leaves to seperate the false bottom because as the leaves break down the gravel mixes in with the substrate and that kinda defeats the point

Hi! I've seen a lot of videos about people training them to crawl on their hands and hang out with them. So my question is: do they suddenly start running or jump down from your hand? I’m afraid I would lose it in the house, but they never talk about it in the videos 🤔
generally they wont jump off without kind of seeing that they will be successful. So its unlikely that they will jump off if there's nothing around for them to jump to. If they do, they always shave a safety thread of web to hang on if they fall so it's likely that they will just hang from their thread, giving you a chance to get them. But as with all bugs, just be careful when handling.
If I get a pet jumping spider again I'll feed it the flies and tiny cockroaches I find around my home.

It’s usually best to not feed them bugs around your home because you don’t know what disease/germs they’ve been exposed to, just as you wouldn’t put any substrate from your yard in there because it could have pesticides or mites. Hope that’s helpful, it’s just best to have sterile things to have the best environment for your little spider:)
@@belove751 also decoration and insects very cheap, why hunt and risk spider life if you can buy it (in Russia 20 cricket cost 1$ and this enough for 2 mouth for 1 spider).
If you can't afford 10-20$ for you spider, don't pet it.
Just got into jumping spiders. I have no problem with them on the top, I have small wood pieces with large holes that they love! Seen so many ppl say they make webs on top, not mine

Sometimes foraged material ends up having some fungus, beetles, worms, etc that can potentially be harmful. Some people bake foraged wood to kill anything that may be harmful.
Your Terrarium looks Awesome and your starter one was also good. That little guy is adorable and I am not a spider fan. I am glad he has a cool home! Let's name him!

If ur gonna get sticks and branches from outside and not a pet store, bake the sticks or boil them to kill all of the mites, pesticides and bacteria. The Mites could kill ur jumping spider. Same deal for pesticides. Be careful! :)

Better, but still not adequate in my opinion.
1) They often like to make their homes at the top of the enclosure so don't have the lid right at the top in case you damage keep damaging their web every time you open it up - find a box that either opens at the side or the lid is deep enough to lift off the spider and its web without destroying it.
2) You shouldn't be putting un-treated mossy wood in there that you found outside, as chemicals and particularly mites can be a threat to their health - so wash it then bake it in the oven first.
3) if the above is being overlooked, I'll also mention that you must make sure you wash your hands properly before handling, as chemicals on the skin from the day to day can kill them, especially if you have other pets that receive flee treatments as this can certainly kill your little friend in a very slow and upsetting way - I've seen it happen on other TH-cam videos, it was very sad.
It's no use thinking they survive just fine in the wild so why not my enclosure... you don't see the many ways spiders die in the wild, "it's a jungle out there", but get your enclosure perfect and should keep it happy and healthy.

@@TechplantChannel I was thinking of adding the isopods from my garden because of this. Just a quick fix. I’ve taken the molded trees out and cleaned the terrarium but - I think the isopods will help

I've been looking at jumping spiders now, and im hoping to get a phidippus, do you have any tips on where to find the resources needed to make a suitable enclosure thats not crazy expensive?
Some people use the tall deli cups for them. even a large food storage container would work, they arent that picky I just went all out for fun
