A lot of us are health care workers. Greedy hospitals had bare-bones coverage before covid. Covid thinned us out more, plus lay-offs, while hospitals spend millions on campaigns and billboards, etc. I didn't have a vacation in 2023 and none yet in 2024 because no one else is trained to do my job. But I have PTO I have to use. From now on, I'm taking my vacation. The hospital will need to figure it out.

Please take your vacation when needed. Hospitals do not care about your well being. They need to train someone to do your job. It is not your responsibility to cover everyone. I used to also not take my vacation but this year I just got tire of the low staff ratio and took off 2 months.

I can remember a long time ago when I used to be in the corporate world. Before I accepted the position I negotiated a two week paid vacation the following August. I had it in writing signed and dated in the offer letter. One year rolled around and when I said I'm was taking my two week vacation, the manager tried to fire me. After I took vacation I left that job. I now have my own business. Now I go on two week vacation and don't worry.

My boss said something similar when I took off 5 days for a trip to FL for my birthday (2 of those days included the weekend when our office was closed anyway). She kept hounding me, warning me that the person covering me wasn’t really expected to cover much and she didn’t want to see my task list out of control upon my return, etc. I work in Auto claims so there are always more claim assignments piled on than the allotted salaried time to do it all.
She stressed me out so much that it was extremely difficult to stop thinking about how bad my workload was going to be when I returned.

Vacation is VACATION. If you work while on vacation, you are part of the problem that has been created where employers think people can handle massive amounts of work because they do stuff off the clock. My husband owned his own pool care and repair company.. when we first got.together he would get calls as late as 9pm from.customers..and on 2 occasions while we were on vacation out of state he would get calls ..till I finally daid "YOU ARE NOT ONNCALL..you are off, clients were told- they arent charged for this week cause there is nonservice and thst means you dotn take calls either. It’s complicated to go on vacation when you are conducting business contracts without salary. Sure, I can take some quiet time, if I want to miss deadlines, potentially lose clients, and have a smaller paycheck for the wife and babies. Or I can keep my reputation good and stay above the rising cost of living. Life is all about trade offs. One advantage of being an hourly contractor is that when business is slow, I automatically get time off while I cruise on my emergency fund and try to figure out how to get my income back. I’m never at ease, but I’m also never depressed. Too much to get done. Too much at stake. Too much equity to build and investments to max out when times are prosperous.

Thise are the lazy managers who waste time , leave early , always have an emergency with their kids and akways complain they need more help . I can't change that behavior, so I have learned to mitigate them . Personally, I find it difficult to consider what they have to say . I do respect them due to their position. Imagine if Americans just stopped eating because they couldn't afford food. That is basically what the bottom half of the country needs to do right now.

Your knowledge of the 'economy' is very poor. 'feelings' do not equal good economy, 401k growth equals inflation, the economy sucks today !!

I don’t want to be fired for taking a vacation. So I don’t take one, haven’t done it for years. I’ll take a day off to see the dentist or doctor if I have to.

I think what is going on is we had decades of watching tv, without the internet. We are treating social media as if it is real like people have treated TV as being real, despite even knowing subconsciously TV is not real.
I think it is a huge mistake. I also think that the millennials and gen X generations are very aware that both are not real. I think because we grew up with the mix of both TV and Internet and seeing the internet in its infant stage while still going outside to ride bicycles with our friends when we were little. The boomers seem to be having the most trouble with distinguishing reality. I think they were subjected to the TV so much and the TV fed them information to tell them how they should feel. Where as millennials recognize that they are being told how to feel after being exposed to a tv program, and see right through how they are being manipulated to feel a certain way.
