A lot of us are health care workers. Greedy hospitals had bare-bones coverage before covid. Covid thinned us out more, plus lay-offs, while hospitals spend millions on campaigns and billboards, etc. I didn't have a vacation in 2023 and none yet in 2024 because no one else is trained to do my job. But I have PTO I have to use. From now on, I'm taking my vacation. The hospital will need to figure it out.
Please take your vacation when needed. Hospitals do not care about your well being. They need to train someone to do your job. It is not your responsibility to cover everyone. I used to also not take my vacation but this year I just got tire of the low staff ratio and took off 2 months.
I can remember a long time ago when I used to be in the corporate world. Before I accepted the position I negotiated a two week paid vacation the following August. I had it in writing signed and dated in the offer letter. One year rolled around and when I said I'm was taking my two week vacation, the manager tried to fire me. After I took vacation I left that job. I now have my own business. Now I go on two week vacation and don't worry.
It's frightening how easily i disconnect from work on the weekends or vacation. Sometimes when I get back to work I'm amazed I pick everything back up and haven't completely forgot how to do my job.

@@WTHenry2023I use a long king pillow to lay my back against while sleeping. It helps me out so much not only with support but keeps my husband from hitting me by accident during the night lol. Hes a restless sleeper and would manage to end up hitting me with arm, feet or elbow in our California King. We have our intimate times twice a week and cuddle but that pillow between us makes a huge difference for a good night’s sleep lol
I had two weeks off during Christmas break at the university, Yayyy! Super Excited😁Just before I would leave my boss would say that he was going to work over that time and I should prepare myself to be super busy upon my return. I hated him.
My boss said something similar when I took off 5 days for a trip to FL for my birthday (2 of those days included the weekend when our office was closed anyway). She kept hounding me, warning me that the person covering me wasn’t really expected to cover much and she didn’t want to see my task list out of control upon my return, etc. I work in Auto claims so there are always more claim assignments piled on than the allotted salaried time to do it all. She stressed me out so much that it was extremely difficult to stop thinking about how bad my workload was going to be when I returned. When I got back it was fine! All the unwarranted threats and worry she caused really ticked me off. It’s as if she wanted to punish me for FINALLY taking time off. She’s manipulative.
Best part about my job, is that it is mostly stress free. Only time I am sort of stress is when taking tests for certifications, which I can always comeback to if I fail.
I recently took off 6 days of work to fly to my nephew's wedding. The cost of missing my hourly pay (temp worker without vacation pay), airfare, dog boarding, shared lodging, low budget wardrobe, wedding gift, and food topped $2,500. I will not be taking another travel vacation for 2 years. I am 62.
Just went to my best friend's father's funeral. The cost of a one day trip for airfare, 1 night's lodging and rental car was $800. I can't afford more than one best friend...
One of my friends is saving for a new home. She works a second job 2x month . She was able to pick up a Friday shift months in advance and use her PTO for that day so, she received her regular pay [ PTO] as well as the wages for working at her second job that day. Folks need to keep their goals in mind. Nothing wrong at all with a Staycation or using your saved time from work and working your second job

My husband owned his own pool care and repair company.. when we first got.together he would get calls as late as 9pm from.customers..and on 2 occasions while we were on vacation out of state he would get calls ..till I finally daid "YOU ARE NOT ONNCALL..you are off, clients were told- they arent charged for this week cause there is nonservice and thst means you dotn take calls either. You arent a doctor and no one is dying"
I agree. Having worked in HR for 10 years, I can confirm if you want take an actual vacation you will have to stay away from moving up the ladder and having a good salary. Nearly all six figure earners I know have to check in on vacation or work in some capacity. Heck it became that way for me when I crossed the 75K range…

It’s complicated to go on vacation when you are conducting business contracts without salary. Sure, I can take some quiet time, if I want to miss deadlines, potentially lose clients, and have a smaller paycheck for the wife and babies. Or I can keep my reputation good and stay above the rising cost of living. Life is all about trade offs. One advantage of being an hourly contractor is that when business is slow, I automatically get time off while I cruise on my emergency fund and try to figure out how to get my income back. I’m never at ease, but I’m also never depressed. Too much to get done. Too much at stake. Too much equity to build and investments to max out when times are prosperous.
Ken’s argument supposes most spending is discretionary. IT IS NOT. You don’t have a choice to get the car fixed, fix your furnace, make house repairs, pay for kids school expenses. Everything costs more. Stop saying it’s because of discretionary spending.

Right!! We have never been able to afford to take a vacation (in any form) on the 20 years my husband and I have been together. Can't afford to. We can't hardly even pay our house, utilities, insurance, etc. all the needs, let alone pay for any wants 😢 That's with both of us working! We have to work. I get a very small raise once a year and and he gets a little bigger raise once a year and the companies we work for will not give raises otherwise.
Thankfully this is only a white collar problem. I'm a truck driver. I'll be in the carribean on vacation in a few weeks. But my truck & trailer will be safely parked some 2800 miles away in western NY lol. I get 4 weeks paid vacay each year and I don't need to do a darn thing work related beyond not using recreational marijuana due to our federal random drug testing ruining all the fun 🤣🤣

I learned that I am fake vacationing wrong. Can’t afford to go to a destination. So I make food that I would sample, look up virtual tours walk/bike in real life (stationery bike, or walking in place.
this is my next move for financial + other reasons. :) One of the biggest ones is that I honestly find air travel and road trips more exhausting and stressful than just unplugging and enjoying my home ❤
The real problem is setting boundaries and following through. I work from home and setting boundaries is quote important because it's so easy to just walk into my home office and start working. When I'd off, I'm as good as dead. Don't call me, don't text me. I'm not reading your email. It can all wait until my scheduled work time.

They are not hands on, engaging with the teams in the field and several are obvious . Thise are the lazy managers who waste time , leave early , always have an emergency with their kids and akways complain they need more help . I can't change that behavior, so I have learned to mitigate them . Personally, I find it difficult to consider what they have to say . I do respect them due to their position. They are the weakest leadership also . I read the email and move forward , it does waste my time but i have to mitigate that on a daily basis . They are also known to be the " yes" People who actually do nothing .

I don’t want to be fired for taking a vacation. So I don’t take one, haven’t done it for years. I’ll take a day off to see the dentist or doctor if I have to.
I think what is going on is we had decades of watching tv, without the internet. We are treating social media as if it is real like people have treated TV as being real, despite even knowing subconsciously TV is not real. I think it is a huge mistake. I also think that the millennials and gen X generations are very aware that both are not real. I think because we grew up with the mix of both TV and Internet and seeing the internet in its infant stage while still going outside to ride bicycles with our friends when we were little. The boomers seem to be having the most trouble with distinguishing reality. I think they were subjected to the TV so much and the TV fed them information to tell them how they should feel. Where as millennials recognize that they are being told how to feel after being exposed to a tv program, and see right through how they are being manipulated to feel a certain way.

My boss had terminal lymphoma cancer at age 42 and she demonstrated work is left at the office as her work ethic....She was my supervisor 7 years😢
