  • Classic Game Room reviews the unboxing and packaging of the ONLIVE GAME SYSTEM videogame console for cloud gaming! Games from a cloud?? Sounds like rain, which makes beer, which is good. And that all matches the OnLive logo too (look at it).

    @bcheck123...I agree. Nothing beats the convenience of a disc and the experience of unwrapping and unboxing. I think disc are here to stay until fiber optic and super fast internet connections become the norm.

    @papercanfly no this is a system itself but it doesnt use disks or download anything except maybe updates; it streams games that you buy and you can also play free demos for around 30 mins. the system cost $99 and the games run anywhere from $10 to around $45 or possibly $ 50 in not too sure about that.

    Quake live does run locally on your own computer. Onlive runs the games on the computers in the "cloud".

    @Ninkyo893 Exactly! I actually enjoy shopping for my games. Actually getting out of the house, talking to gamers at the store. Plus you can always return a physical copy if you don't like it, or get tired of it and at least get in-store credit! And with physical copies, you can get discounts on used games.

    @Hakern 1. True. 2. With today's DRM, it's not that different from buying a box. 3. Subscription is free, and you "rent" for 3 years. They have awesome discounts too, just like Steam. 4. Delay to OnLive + no delay to game server, since they are on LAN.

    @dgd151 yeah but the biggest problem of this system is, you do not have control of which game you want to play the moment you want, it all depends on how long their servers will support that game and system. I really want to keep 100% control over the hardware and games i have.

  • @Qeter1

    @CheapBeer09 it allows you stream live gaming to it and download full games.it connects to your mac/pc/HDTV

    I got a chance to use the Onlive from my pc. I have to say that I am impressed. The graphics are pretty good, the game plays great with no lag, albeit with a good internet connection, so it's not for everyone yet. The games aren't quite there yet however. When the game selection gets better, I will highly consider getting the onlive console for my HDTV. Until then, it is fine for the occasional game from my pc. I recommend the service to anyone with decent internet. There is a free trial.

  • @dawhelan
    @dawhelan 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Hakern
    1) There is not active subscription, so you never lose access
    2) The renting issue shares very little difference from Steam. If the service is discontinued you lose access to your content. Some would argue that Onlive would be less drastic impact because you did not pay for the hardware to play the game
    3) On travel, the server lists change and the delay has minimum impact on games like Batman or Borderlands, but you are right that this is not ideal for racing or fighting games

    @AntDude92 this however means you don't fancy hardware to run games, it streams the game to your tv or computer, so instead of having to upgrade your computer to play newer games you can just let their computers run it and you just have it run on your tv

    @HerrGubba 2Mb/s for SD gaming 5Mb/s for HD gaming.. Unless you live out in the wilderness most ISP's in mainland America and Europe provide 10Mb/s and higher for a low cost. OnLive is heavily streamlined to make sure that the streaming works effectively.

    I was one of the first beta testers for onlive and at first I did not really like it, impressive technology but lag and bluriness were a problem, but it has gotten a hell of alot better within a years time and now sometimes I think someone could be fooled into thinking their playing native hardware and it is only going to get better. I really think cloud gaming and computing is the future, it just makes sense.

    @D3STRUKT0R99 Not sure if you're up on the service, but there's no subscription fee now. Hasn't been for a couple months at least. They have a 10 bucks a month thing, but that's for access to a set of games and you get a month to try it free - you don't need a subscription to just try it out.

    I really can't see how a system like this can overcome the presumably massive controller lag, as the data makes the round trip from your hands, to the server and back. It is however, an interesting proof-of-concept and the device itself, along with the user interface, are very well designed.
    Will you be doing any usage reviews of this system Mark?

    @fallenangei another example of why Onlive is good. Homefront was launched everywhere around midnight in their timezone. With Onlive, it was 12:01am EST, meaning people using Onlive on PSTwere able to play the game a good 3 hours before any other people not using Onlive. They didnt have to wait for a download like Steam users. They just logged in, went to their games, selected Homefront, then they were playing the game. Even the east coast users did it a little faster, no trips to the store.

    @Verification11 Im no expert but im pretty sure its when you play games on another computer (one of onlive's in this example) and then it sends what you would see on the screen back to your screen, when you press a button it sends to the computer and does the appropriate action, many people say its the future of gaming because in theory it allows anything that is connected to the internet and can run video to play even the most advanced games.

    I find OnLive to be an amazing concept to say the least. Sadly when I tried to sign up for trying it out I got a reply stating that they were currently not offering their service to where I live, which is Europe-Greece. O well anyway, let's hope that one day it will come. Oh and I'm curious about the connection latency.

    On a more serious note, the olive system is cool but the problem is you must have a continuous steady stream of bandwidth at all times to play your games. Also if a server goes down no games for you that day.

    @GavinSpenceR18 on the contrary, onlive doesn't actually "play" the games on the machine. It connects to a server and streams the game to you. The games are run on a pretty beast machine off location. The games performance mostly has to do with your internet connection.

    @Ichigo9913 It's made by its own company (OnLive). It's not really a game console, more like just a box that allows use of the service on a TV. The service itself just streams the video to your system from their servers, which can cause issues if you don't have a fast enough internet.
    They have the PC app available for download on their website, and it allows you to try 30-minute trials of games. It's worth a try.
