  • Classic Game Room reviews DISCS OF TRON arcade machine from Bally Midway released to the arcades in 1983. Based on the 1982 science fiction movie from Disney starring Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, Cindy Morgan, Dan Shor, and David Warner, Discs of Tron has gamers playing as Tron during the Frisbee death duel battle scene. The other Tron arcade game had light cycles, tanks and the computer battle but this one has death frisbees!! This CGR review of Discs of Tron, the arcade machine, features the rare sit down cabinet version of Discs of Tron, rarely seen in arcades anymore.

I felt a bit uncomfortable when we entered the cabinet "together". I really hope those are a bunch of extra tokens in your pocket!

1983, at the local Golf n' Stuff (miniature golf along with a one time water slide and go-cart track) in Norwalk, California, my mother dropped me off with my own allowance of $10 in quarters to spend the day. Being only a kid, it wasn't crazy at that time for my parents (or parents) to just leave their kids at a place like this and just play incredible, awesome, boss Video Games all day long. One of my own top 3 games of all time, Disc of Tron was absolutely amazing and just the coolest thing ever! The original TRON game was also KICK ASS and I loved every minute and every sound. Thank you dude for posting this, Ha, and after I saw this review, I became a subscriber. Now that I'm an older man with my pockets bigger then when I was a little kid, it was a dream of mine to one day own one of these....., still dreaming of course. Thank you again, this was so awesome. Can't wait to see all of your other reviews down memory lane.

"I'm gonna review this!" should be Mark's new catchphrase that he busts out every once in awhile. It's proof that this man, can in fact, review ANYTHING. Video games, toys, dogs, bananas - it doesn't matter what it is.

I live in Wisconsin Dells, with that said, back in the 70's and especially the game boom of the 80's we had at least 3 major game rooms, Galaxy of Games, The Penny Arcade and the game area at the Chalet near the Outerskate and theater. Yeah there were a few other minor game rooms but those were the major 3. This game was in the corner at Galaxy of Games, I don't know how much I time and money I spent playing it but it was one of the greats.

That is a NICE camera Mark uses, I wonder what brand and model it is. He did a review of the equipment he used back in the day (around 2000 I guess, when David was in the show), but he should do an updated CGR Studios review featuring all his equipment. I bet he could do a behemoth 5 or 6 part review and still come up short on awesomeness.

This vid was great. I only saw this game once back in the day at a Star Of The Sea carnival. I guess we didn't get many of these out here in Honolulu. Sometimes I wondered if I just dreamed the damn game. Good to see this vid and confirm that yes it was real and that one time I got to play it was as cool as I remembered it. Watching this vid had me grinning ear to ear. Love it.

I used to love this game, and for some reason it seemed easier than the original TRON game. Not that it was all that easy. I used to blow the high score away daily, but when I played the first game I never got past the 3rd level.
Incidentally, this was never released for the Intellivision. You are thinking of Tron: Deadly Discs, which came out before this game.

@KimCheeWarrior: Most 'premium' games like Discs Of Tron were beginning to cost $0.50 because the owners expected to get a lot of profit from them, I guess. Or rising costs made them charge that same amount. Older games in the arcade would be still $0.25.

    Cabinet Information
The environmental version of this game is huge, weighing in at over 700 pounds. The game was often sawed in two to make it easier to move. The cabinet, though it looks like it should come apart, does not the roof and floor boards span both halves of the cabinet. The environmental is called such because it attempts to replicate the environment that your character on the screen is experiencing.

I heard DISCS of TRON was supposed to be a level in the original TRON game but they did not have the memory to include it. So it became it's own game. In my opinion, the could have cut the grid bugs and MCP to fit it.

@Neville6000 but even throughout the entire 80's, it was rare to see a game cost more than a quarter to play unless it was the moving variety like outrun, space harrier, or afterburner 2 or multi-screen multiplayer games like cyberball.

@HptmSteinhauer You could always build a legacy machine, just for older games, using WinXP, or even Win98SE. I've built them for a few people in the past, using reclaimed AMD based Emachines off Ebay, that I knew would work with either Win98SE or WinXP. Cause as we know even DOSbox emulation, does not always cut it.
