Yeah it’s really cleaver the way they made it so quickly tweak-able. Thank you for the kind words! Working on a new video now so make sure your subbed! 🖤
I’d like you to go through literally everything in reason. You have a great way of explaining things… Also the preference to know the best settings for your soundcard
I'm a new reason user....and I've been a little intimidated by this one so thank you...Yes Please there's not enough videos on routing...let's see more on the back panel
Glad I could help!! If you want to watch me make Malstrom patches for a couple hours, head over to my patreon. It really is a versatile synth. Thanks for watching!
This is great and you are a good teacher. I've also had Reason since 3 but find a lot of the tutorials way too short or complicated. I just subscribed to your Patreon.
It always confused me as an instrument since I was used to Thor and Subtractor. However, taking what I have learned about wavetable synthesis and looking at this through new eyes, it is pretty awesome. Thanks for making this and getting me to rethink this instrument.

I remember when Malmström came with the v.3 update. It was a real gamechanger! In Reason 1.0 we had nearly nothing, lol. Then 1.5 came , and it had rv7000 and i think Scream distortion too. Then V.3 gave us Malmström. I still use Malmström almost in every tune. You can get the best staccato type sounds out of it.
Looking back…. They have been ahead of the curve the whole time. You mentioned scream and it is STILL my favorite distortion. All of their synths are still relevant. When was the last time anyone used Sylenth or massive? Still using reasons first synth (subtractor) to this day! Thanks for watching!
Had Reason Adapted since version 2.5, when Malstrom came along in version 3, it became my fav synth ever since! Even after Thor, even after some hardware synths and modules. Only thing getting my attention now is Europa.
Europa is a BEAST. I really like the way they implemented the Envelopes. Will do another, more in-depth video on that one. Probly will do Thor first, though. Thanks for watching!!
Glad to hear that!! I recommend a whole session of just making sounds. Was really helpful for me when I made the patches for this video. Plus I now have some sweet new sounds that I know inside and out! Super beneficial for building your overall "sound" as well! Stay inspired!!
The nature of the program in that new shiny devices that get added eclipse the old ones. Also when the OG ones were released, there wasn't TH-cam or people showcasing them. Reason Studios has so many great devices that don't get the recognition they deserve. Perhaps if they gave them a shiny coat of paint and maybe a few new features they could bring them back into the limelight.
Agreed. Isn’t that true of all things! Always something new and shiny. We would be forced to do the same, perhaps, in Reason Studios position. Luckily there’s some OGs out there who can showcase the classics. I hear you on that shiny coat of paint idea. I’ll do my best to shine light on the greats of the rack. You just keep watching!
Awesome Vid.. Just saw yesterday that MALs has been hiding in the back of the room with some of the most power for modern music. Wonder if I can get that pitch bend (In Mod A) to start at the initial hit of a note and bend up to the actual note that is played?
Malstrom is literally the main Reason synth I love the most Oh, and I forgot to add. It's funny when it comes to 3rd party virtual instruments, everyone is Gaga for replica of vintage sounds and interfaces. And yet, people put down Reason's synths for being "out dated" uhhmmm... they're all amazing. Even with my obsessively cast Soft synth collection (and a UVI Sound pass subscription), there are sounds and energy only the Reason Synths have. especially with Malestrom
You make a solid point here. Like, do you like it old school or not? I’m just glad we have our version of “vintage” we don’t have to worry about what “they” think. 🙃
When ever I hear these expensive synth demos with all these 'unique' sounds, I'm like "I got that in Malstrom!" Funny how if it's hardware, it's vintage, but if it's software, it's outdated.
@@itsdjQuasar Listen to it with headphones, try Patch 8. You can even hear your phone interfering at one point. And yes, the audio is clipping at some point in the signal chain. It wasn't too bad but it's definitely there. Just thought I'd point it out in case you hadn't noticed. Cheers!
No I don't think so but I don't have Reason plus but go get it anyway. My most used reason plugin I use it on everything, sometimes 2 instances since not all devices in the effect rack have volume/gain and you need that after the last you use in the rack or combinator, crucial for gainstaging. Or use it on top so you can control how hot your signal will hit a plugin. 'vintage' modelled plugins work optimal with a certain input level and they really do. So yeah.
I know right. It just didn't call to me the way the others did. Then VST came along later and I really didn't use the native synths much at all. Mistake. Thanks for watching!
I highly doubt you have never used the Malstrom before considering 3 only had Melstrum and Subtractor as synths. You telling Me You used only NN19 and Subtractor?
Yeah. That’s what I’m telling ya. I also only used reason as rewire to other Daws back then. Protools and then Logic. Used a lot of Rex files back then and sampled stuff using recycle. Couldn’t play chords or anything at that time. Didn’t even really dive into synthesis until reason 5 maybe 6 but it was sylenth, again cause I was in logic, rewiring. Reason was pretty much a huge drum machine for me back then. Thanks for watching!!
@@itsdjQuasar Well I used Reason 4 for over 10 years and have 12 now plus sevraul REs but about 90% of My Reason music use Thor, Melstrum and Subtractor on there there own or as Combinators.
@@HOLLASOUNDS I see. Yeah its hard to stray from you process. But I'm sure it would be beneficial if you did. I'll get to breaking something down that you haven't used at some point, I'm sure. Stay tuned!
Good one! Amazing how we concentrate on the latest and greatest while we forget about the oldies but goodies! Thanks for the reminder!
Exactly how I felt. This channel has been a blessing to me in that regard. Love the classics!
@@itsdjQuasar You ought to do avid on the Grain Sample Manipulator - some sweet sounds coming out of that one as well! :)
Thanks for the reminder of Malstrom's power yet simplicity.

That routing section was really helpful. I always wondered why Malström had this weird mono spread in my case.

Hi, the malstrom combis don't work in reason suite 11 (bad or corrupt files)
They are made using the new combinator. I don’t think Reason 11 has it.
