    You're exactly right regarding the opening of the clip applier. Those items are too expensive to chance losing them. Also, when chunking some items from farther away, you risk tearing your back table drape and contaminating everything you've opened.

    Can you do a video or even reply with all the steps, from high school to actually getting the job that you need to do? Like what classes in college, what programs, certain schools, etc. I want to be a surgical tech but I have no idea how to get on the path

    • @paigerk4997
      @paigerk4997 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just Google surgical tech program and apply to an accredited school. Your state's community colleges & Universities should have the program. Regarding classes for high school, you'll want math and science courses. Take human anatomy, microbiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology, medical terminology if you can.

    Loving the information videos especially correct way of how to open sterile packages. I dont know if any other surgical techs record what they do in their hospitals.

    I did not see you check the integrity of any of those items. Make sure to do that guys super important!

      Labinot Toplica, I wrote something similar to that further down. Those peel-packed items are handled several times before opening. If people aren't careful those bags can get holes. I would hold them up towards the lights and even a tiny pinpoint hole would show.

    • @labinottoplica9381
      @labinottoplica9381 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      c coop Very accurate! Also peel packs are more likely to have the hole in them, but really anything can easily get a hole. You also should never flip peel packs things without the tech holding the item in there hand until who ever opened the item put the package in the light and verifies there is no hole.

      Labinot Toplica, we double bagged the separate instruments to try to keep those bags more sturdy. I always found holes in the wrappers like shown here that had cameras. They had to be single bagged. That's what I told, anyway. I always showed those wrappers to CPD staff and director. I haven't worked in 4 years, so I hope they found a solution.

  • @Msstaci5

    Since I haven't gone through school yet, this may be a silly question. Why not just wait until you scrub in to open packages? The OR Nurse peels and you can get the item out with out accidentally dropping it.

    • @SurgicalTechTips
      @SurgicalTechTips  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nurse has other responsibilities to take care of during that time. Sometimes they have a little extra time to help you open, but in no way do they have time to open every item you need.

      This is what we do where I'm from. Tossing items onto the table would be a big no no... Luckily we usually have 3 people per room at turnover, so one can be with the patient while the other sets up the scrub. If not, then the nurse will make sure the scrub is pretty much set up before bringing the patient in. I guess it just depends on where you are :)

    • @ccoop3774
      @ccoop3774 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jam, that's how we did it too. Some days, though, with people out, it will be just 2 people. It can make for a brutal day. We also were a little closer to the table. Now, our arms had to be covered, everyone. With 18 inches away, there would be a lot of lost charges.
      Maybe it was just at the hospital where I worked, but I started inspecting those individual peel packs. They were prone to getting tiny tears. I would hold the pack up to the ceiling lights. If there's a hole, it will show up. Those packs are transferred a few times before we get them to open up. Everyone has to be extremely careful when handling them.

    When opening difficult Items could you pre open it and scrub in then get the item?
    I’m into my third term with my school still learning everything and stumbled upon your videos. Just wondering at this point

    Hi I am wondering. Your thoughts on a lpn working as a surgical tech air of surgical tech jobs that are listed say certified surgical tech or lpn. I am a lpn but am not interested in a lot of the job opportunities and I really want to work in a hospital. I learned sterile technique in school but that’s about it. Is there a lot of on the job training ?

    Concerning the clip applier and similar equipment, there is NEVER a good reason for suboptimal aseptic technique. The patient's life depends on it. Simply delay opening them until someone who is properly gowned and gloved can help. That includes the operating surgeon or his/her assistant. Personally, I'm not a fan of "flipping" and am always happy to assist in transferring items to the back table. When asked I know that that instrument tech or nurse has thought about potential problems and is being meticulous. He/she is the person with whom I then want to work. With implantable devices such as pacemakers, etc., I never expose them to OR air until they are actually ready to be put into the patient. The infectious inoculum on foreign bodies is much smaller than on tissues without foreign bodies implanted.
