I am a walker, a hiker. I delivered mail for the US Postal Service for 8 years. I have hiked the length of California on the Pacific Crest Trail. In 2019, in part to commemorate and acknowledge that aspect of my life, I purchased a Rolex Explorer 114270 (made in 2009.)
I mention the reference number and the year the 114270 was made because even within a reference number Rolex occasionally makes changes to a watch over the course of its production. For example, after 2007 or 2008 the 114270 included an engraved “R O L E X” in the rehaut. This is a subtle change, but as one becomes more knowledgeable of Rolex watches such differences become significant. As an example of that the Submariner is an iconic Rolex watch and for some the 14060 is the “Last of the Best.”
I live in casual California. I do not own a suit. I have a blue blazer and a tweed sport coat. It has been years since I have had occasion to wear either of them. The last time I did, I felt over-dressed. The Explorer is more than adequate for any formal occasion that I may attend.
The purchase of a Rolex has set me on another interesting journey.

This is the exact choice I presented myself with last year when I decided to get my first watch. I ended up going with the explorer although one day I reall want that date just also. I like the fact that I can wear the exp into the city centre and no layman can spot it as being a rolex, makes me feel secure. 36mm traditional size is spot on.
Put a NATO strap on it and it becomes 100% theft-proof.

I chose Explorer 36mm. Best decision I've made. I love the Datejust too but Explorer for me ticks all boxes.
I am a field watch guy, but the date just is such a gorgeous and practical watch.
I think living in central london, the explorer is probably the safer choice. I also think it has more storied history and can be dressed up or down with straps. Great video!
You are right: The DJ 36, in comparison, is the far more versatile watch on the formality scale and arguably the best contender for a one watch collection for sartorially interested men like you and me. And if you broaden the perspective and think about it's place in a three watch collection, it's a phenomenal center piece, leaving room for a super rugged sports watch like a Sinn, as well as for a more dedicated dressy piece in yellow gold on a leather strap.
I have the 14270 explorer from 1997. I love the size and I am 6'3" with a 7" wrist. I really like the understated and tool look. Great video and enjoy your watches!
Both watches are equally amazing, but I think I'd have to go with the Explorer. I just love the superb legibility and the understatement of it. Great video as always 👍.

Thank you for the video and nice to see each on a side to side comparison. You are fortunate to have curated such a fine collection. For a subtle choice, my preference is the 36mm Explorer. The cyclops lens on date function Rolex models is a telltale sign to most observers that are familiar with the brand and therefore it makes it harder to go without being noticed. Another presenter reminded that we all carry our smart phones and thus the purpose of a wristwatch is inherently less functional, so I see that the date feature is not a requirement. All that being said, the blue DJ, especially with the president bracelet as you have in your possession, is a special combination that works especially well in most social and recreational activities.
I have a Datejust 1601 that I’ve inherited from my grandpa and an Explorer 114270 I’ve been given by my mother. Love them both, and couldn’t chose in between them. Both are incredible versatile and work great in most occasions, but the Datejust performs a little bit better in dressier situations, and the Explorer works a little bit better in more casual ones. However, both run the whole spectrum.

DJ 36 for me as a daily wear (leather band) and Omega Seamaster for the beach.
For me the choice is the Explorer in 39mm. Its simple elegance settles the question for me. You can dress it up or down with different strap options, but I quickly put it back on the super comfortable stock tapered bracelet.
Smart choice. I also own a 116234 Datejust but with white dial. . What I love most about this Datejust is the roulette date wheel.

Another great video, Ash. Very informative and entertaining. My choice, like yours, is the Datejust. A great daily-wearer with enough elegance for special occasions. A coworker wears his Explorer 36 (previous model) for years and years. After seeing it nearly every day for over 8 years, I realize that it just doesn't quite excite me as a Datejust. The new Explorer is a fine piece. But Datejust every day and twice on Sunday for me. Congrats, on your very enviable collection.
Good choice (the Datejust winner). I've been waiting for the Explorer since the day it was announced, and even before with the 39mmm version. Lately I've been thinking the DateJust might be a better fit for me, so this was a very good video to watch. Plus for the Dj is the Jubilee bracelet, and though I prefer a clean dateless dial, I'll admit I find the date function very handy. Also the fact that the Datejust wears slightly larger is a plus, though I can get away with wearing 34-35mm easily. I have a vintage Omega that's under 34mm, but very thin, and on a leather strap so it works proportionately. Thanks.

Love your takes. Just get both! The Explorer has a black dial in smooth bezel + oyster bracelet, so go for DJ with a white dial in fluted, jubilee! I got a 39mm and 41mm tho ;]]

Another awesome video Ash and I absolutely agree with your conclusion. The Explorer is often touted as the perfect one watch collection but as time has gone on, I too feel that the DJ is the better choice for a “lifer”… more outstanding, more interesting and gives you more butterflies when you look down at your wrist.
Given your extensive watch collection, this may not be of any interest to you but I have a humble suggestion… keep your eye on Chrono24 for the corresponding oyster bracelet. Bracelet reference is 72200. Totally changes the look of the watch with the oyster bracelet and gives the piece a whiff of the Day-Date about it with the fluted bezel/oyster bracelet combo. Of course the purists may grumble but who cares 🤷🏻♂️
The 36DJ with jubilee and oyster bracelet options really is the perfect one (actually two) watch collection
Brilliant and honest video Ash. All my classic or dress watches are 36mm….that’s how I prefer them even though I am a reasonably large man. My professional or sports watches are between 40 and 42mm although I also have the 36mm Explorer in two tone as I love that watch.
I got the two tone explorer recently. No rolex is used for actually exploring, I have a seiko for that, multiple actually. Just wanted an understated, warm and charming watch. Fits the bill well and compliments my Grand Seiko snowflake well
Fully agree. I'm on my second Blue DJ36. Originally had 116234 fluted on Oyster. I've got the newer one now with the 3235 movement so it keeps up with my 124270. I don't have the infinity bracelet like you but I get easy link which I really enjoy. I've got both the OEM Oyster and Jubilee so letting my Expl 1 go would be an even easier choice for me.
Datejust. Love that blue. The iconic cyclops is a must. Though my pick would be a Tudor BB58 925 silver. The other day I realized I had gone to work wearing gray shoes, gray socks, gray pants, gray sweatshirt, gray rain jacket, and a gray knit cap. A Tudor 925 on a gray strap would not have been out of place. The black winter gloves might have been ...

Practicality, datejust. Availability, datejust. Robustness, explorer. Simplicity, explorer. Different watch for different lifestyle. But I’m 100% with you on this one. I’ll choose the datejust mainly for that additional date function.

- 2nd time watching this video in the last year. Two of my favorite watches and one of my favorite channels to relax to. I also would choose the DateJust and I don’t even have many occasions to dress up. It’s just the quintessential watch I have in my mind after growing up through the 70’s and seeing on so may wrists.
While the explorer 1 is my favourite watch from Rolex, that roulette date wheel adds so much character to the datejust!

I have the 116234 of the same era (circa 2005, stainless steel, silver sunburst, fluted bezel, hidden clasp jubilee, non-roulette date), but I have a transitional one that was made right before the engraved rehaut, so mine has the serial number in the old position (on the case between the bottom lugs). So interesting to have researched all of this to know the small evolutions throughout Rolex's history.
I bought my 126234 DJ with fluted bezel on jubilee in 2021. Black dial, just to make it my everyday all-outfit-appropriate watch. LOVE it. Wears super comfy, looks awesome and suits with both formal and casual outfit.

Hi Ash, I have the Explorer and waiting on a no date Submariner. I have to admit that the datejust is the iconic Rolex watch.
I bought a two tone DJ I’m 1992. I decided this year, 30 years later, I would get another Rolex. I settled on a Oyster Perpetual with a yellow dial. This was before I realized the current state of availability in the Rolex market. I made my way to two ADs, one about 120 miles away and one over 200 miles away and put my name on “The List”.
Obviously, that dial has now been discontinued. I don’t know who is paying those crazy prices on the grey market, not me even if I could.
Buying any luxury item should be an exciting and enjoyable experience. One should be able to browse a store and take home what one wants.
The next time I’m in the area I’ll stop by the AD again and check on the current state of affairs and if there has been no change, I’ll head over the Omega shop and see how things are going over there.
You spoke my heart out.... I picked up an explorer after a long wait and I used to check with the dealer every month after six months and got it almost after an year but was so disappointed. It wears so damn small....It was unbelievable. I sold it to another enthusiast without making profit and picked up a silver fluted Basel date just 36. My wife was so happy and was telling me " this looks better on your wrist and of course looks classy". She was shocked the Explorer was worth so much I paid for. It was an amazing filed watch but wears so damn small but in pics it looks ok, but I never enjoyed looking at my watch to see the time machine ticking so what is the use!!!

I have an Explorer and love it. But I agree the Datejust is best "once and done". Currently I also have a 1953 Rolex Oyster steel with gold indices 34mm, and a Cartier platinum Tortue 34mm x 43mm.
Love the video. I split the difference and went with the Datejust with a smooth bezel. A little more sporty/understated than the fluted bezel but still on the jubilee and looks great with a suit. It's the watch I wear every day.

Thanks a lot for this video comparing the entry models from Rolex.
I would like to toss one more model into the ring. It’s the Oyster Perpetual. The real entry level Rolex. It is available in a variety of sizes and dial configurations like the Dayjust models. And beside these insanely hyped coloured dials there is a very subdued black or an elegant silver dial. And even your favourite blue is available.
I picked up a now discontinued model in 2016. It has got a very nice rhodium dial. Having a larger wrist size of 18.5cm (7.25”) I choose a 39mm. By the way - your 6.5” wrist is perfect for wearing a 36mm Rolex. I’ve tried on some 36mm Rolexes included the new Explorer and have to say that I could get away with a Datejust in 36 but struggling to get used to the size of the Explorer. It sits so tiny on my wrist. What I want to say - all of your viewers being in the market for a more or less affordable Rolex should have a look at the OP models as well.

Thanks Claus, you make an excellent point, the OP is a great entry level into the Rolex brand .
weird using the word entry level for a datejust when the 41mm version is priced higher than a sub and in and around a gmt master 2. they are deemed as entry level because they make them more available but it's more smoke screens and mirrors created by rolex. the true entry level which is the op is harder to get than a sub is some colours and if it was as available as say a tudor, they would be be very hard pushed to ask £3000. The whole rolex thing is a myth that intelligent people seem to lap up. decent enough watches but nothing more. And yes, I have two and they are the explorer 39 and datejust 36 so i'm no better

Great, video, thank you, you helped me! I think the premise of your decision (if you could have only one) is a good one. I have a milestone coming up next year and can only afford one. So I’m contemplating what would be the most versatile for me as someone who plans to wear it everyday everywhere. I do love the Datejust but I think I may have to go with the Explorer! I think the ONLY reason is because I prefer my watch to fly under the radar. Cheers!

I was fortunate to find a Rolex Oyster Perpetual with the blue face that was originally purchased in the early 1960s. I got this one because it is not as flashy as the three front runners. I sometimes find myself in places in which one of the fancier looking model would make me a target for thieves.
If I have to choose one, I will also take the DateJust.
Actually I got my DateJust 36mm blue-dial fluted-bezel two and half years ago.
Since I already own a DateJust, I don't think I need an explorer 36.

The roulette date, I like that. It's a nice accent. The DateJust has a lot of other things going for it. -The font used for the numerals on the Explorer is Eurostile. While not a bad font (designed in the 60s by Aldo Novarese to communicate modernity), is an overused font when it comes to watches. It's also a font that is used a lot for science fiction movies - still communicating modernity very well. But they could have used something else on the dial.
Simple answer? Pick both 😜 one as a daily driver, the other for functions…perfect combo

Get the best of both worlds and get a SS DJ36 with the smooth bezel and oyster bracelet. Stealth like the explorer, but has the handy date as well. Great as a daily wear 😊
I’m so envious the Explorer 1 is such a beautiful timepiece my favourite in 36” love the gold around the numerals tried it on when I picked up my submariner date but too small on my close to 8” wrist needed extra links on the sub.
Have you thought about getting one of the 39mm Explorer's from 2010-2020? They may fit you a quite a bit better! Also, for the record, my 36 seemed awfully small on my wrist when I first put it on but having it sit gracefully on your wrist for a couple days made me realize it's a fantastic size
Hi,watch enthusiast and word pedant here. At 7:04 you said, regarding the Datejust, “For all intensive purposes”. The usual phrase is “For all intents and purposes”.
Regarding the choice between the Explorer and the DJ, I was stuck on the horns of the same dilemma so I blackmailed the bank manager into financing both of them.
I got a two-tone from my AD in January but haven't worn it yet. Still unsure whether to keep it or sell on.
The datejust and the sub are probably the two most iconic watches of all time. And yet the explorer is the only modern Rolex for me. I ended up getting the explorer and a medium Cartier Santos as my similar feeling duo as your explorer and datejust. It really makes me question why I have other watches

I think the Explorer will be the one I will go for. The size and simplicity are just what I like in a watch.
I have the Tudor Black Bay 36, and as such have no desire for an explorer - i simply prefer the tudor style for the type of watch it is. I will probably want a Datejust or OP at some point however, they're both great watches.
I pick the Tudor Black Bay 36. Because availability is an important factor.
Thanks for this great display of these watches. I‘m now on the waiting list for a Datejust. First I leaned towards the explorer, but the Datejust gives me more of what I want out of my (probably) only Rolex. Both are very beautiful tough. I could try a Datejust at the AD, but not my desired combination, and the size of 36mm was perfect for my medium wrist.
I know the OP isn't attainable anymore but I always thought that it would be my preferred 1st choice of Rolex - out of the OP, Datejust and explorer. But now most are unattainable, and it feels that tudor is heading in the same way.
I only want one Rolex, the 36mm Rolex Explorer 1. Maybe the 39mm but I like the appeal of the original size. I'll watch your videos to figure out how to apply for one when I get to that point I'm still only 90% done with my sartorial journey (suits and watches left) so soon enough.

Beautiful watch and a very good first watch.
I have both:
- Explorer 1, 36mm (current model)
- DateJust, 36mm Green Palm Dial (fluted bezel, on a Jubilee bracelet).
Same case shape granted, but couldn't be more opposite re the aesthetic and "vibe" they give off. There is so much variation on offer in the DateJust range to choose from. If you already have an Explorer 1, my advice would be to ensure you have enough separation/differentiation between the two when configuring the DateJust e.g. don't opt for DateJust with a blue dial on an oyster bracelet and a smooth bezel.
I think it's criminal to be conservative with a DateJust 😅, unless it's your only "one and done" watch or you are choosing it for your daily driver. If that's the case, don't get the Explorer 1 as well.

Picking between the two is a Sophie's choice -- can't go wrong with either.
My vote goes to the Explorer, my most favorite Rolex.
In regards to getting a Rolex from an AD, it is possible. I was able to get a 34mm OP Date as a gift for my dad’s 80th birthday in two weeks, then the Explorer in SS for myself in two months. Both are purchased from the same Rolex boutique, with no prior purchase history. My coworker got his 41mm DJ a few hours after his first inquiry. A few weeks later, his wife stopped by the boutique and got her 34mm OP pink dial the same day. We all bought ours from the same Rolex boutique. None of us had any prior purchase history either.
After a year or two of reading about “the Rolex AD game,” I was in disbelief with the experience. Actually, I’m still in shock how smoothly it went.
You did well, although things are changing fast and I suspect Rolex availability will change markedly in the near future.
As a watch enthusiast, I do hope the availability will shift in the favor of the regular costumers :)

In times past,I thought I really wanted either a Beuche-Girod 34mm or a 'jumbo' 35mm 18k Piaget Polo.While beautiful,they may not be as practical or versatile as the Rolex Datejust.They were very popular with the smart set in the 80's and early 90's,but they cannot be worn with just anything,and getting them serviced is difficult at best,as I have learned that most have quartz movements and the blueprint grids are virtually unobtainable,as are parts.They can be a bit gaudy as well

to me it’s the perfect ‘watch enthusiasts’ sleeper watch. I think those who wear it are more likely to be into the hobby and made a conscious decision to pursue it
The DJ is class. But to me it’s less enthusiast and a safe ‘appealing to most’ watch
I started the 'journey'' with a Tudor 1926 36mm Opaline and blue dial with jubilee style bracelet. Great value for money & looks good. I then put my name down for a Oyster Perpetual 36mm black dial (still waiting!)

I wanted an Explorer when my son was born (birth year) for when he’s 21. Was laughed out of town and couldn’t get one. Settled on a Tudor BB36 which was the compromise in the short time I had to get one. It’s a shame that most AD’s will make their mind up about you 10 seconds after you’ve walked in the store.
Nice video presentation. I’ve been on the waiting list since 10/2020 for a “Batman 2” GMT. Talked to my AD about 2 weeks ago and was told there are “only a handful” of people ahead of me. I was told that it’s likely I’ll be called in just a few months.

Morning chaps, DJ of the two for me new jubilee strap is strong and dressy. Explorer more tool watch and I'd wear Omega SMP for that course. Worth looking at the Turn-o-graph / Thunderbird. Sits nicely between these two. Happy Easter break to all!

I really think it's strange that the Explorer wears smaller - aside from the fact that it's got fewer design details, which makes it appear smaller, and of course also that the case actually is a tiny bit smaller. Anyway, when you put them side by side in this video, I think the Explorer looks larger. Maybe because the black dial glides over in the smooth, light reflecting bezel in a way that blue against fluted white gold can't. Anyway, they both look awesome - congratulations on owning them. I'm struggling to choose one out of these two, and for now - I simply can't. I wish you a good day, sir.
The answer is whichever one was displaying the correct time at the time of
filming. But between the two, one can’t go wrong.
Brilliant video, Ash. My AD is trying to get me either a 36mm Datejust, a 36mm OP or a 36mm Explorer in 2022. I'm a big fan of 36mm Rolexes, the classic gentlemen's size. The Datejust is the easiest Rolex to obtain of the three, the OP the most difficult.

You’re spot on with that assessment. I passed on several DJ 36’s and had both the OP and the Explorer on wait list. The Explorer came in but the OP is still on back order. They say it’s because the demand for the Stella dials and allocation of the common movement to the no-date Sub which is in higher demand and a higher cost. To throw a curve, back in the ~2019 you could get an OP36 with the blue face and Explorer numbers, which is, in my opinion, the best of both worlds.
I own both models. I wear the Explorer 1 about 95% of the time. I very much enjoy wearing the Datejust when it’s time to get dressed up or for a special occasion. No wrong answer here!
One other Ace up the explorers sleeve is the light weight and low profile of it. It doesn’t get in the way when you are doing sports or active things!

Instead of an Explorer I I wear one of my BB58, they just fit better to me personally. I tried lately an Explorer I and I was happy about my dj36
@@elmarpodiebrad9570 I recently went to my local AD. They had Datejust 36mm, not display, but they refused selling to me. I am not a flipper, just wanted to add another watch to my collection. AD only sells to public watches with less grey market premium, if any. The rest goes to high end customers, and out of back door straight to the grey market. Rolex know about this, but doesn’t do anything. Works well for them. I can only see the prices for Rolex watches going up, in the future. No one to blame, other than us customers.
