    A tiny thing, but I really hope Rand still starts to learn the flute from Tom. Those little moments later in the series when he internalises like "..when was the last time I played the flute?.." made his character so human. Not to mention how he pays for his meals/bed while traveling with Matt etc.
    Alongside that, a massive one is Rand's relationship with Lan. It only really begins in the first book, and gets more flesh later in the series, but the lessons he learns from Lan form a massive crux of his character development. The whole "death is lighter than a feather, duty is heavier than a mountain" is what makes Rand who he is throughout the books. Not to mention it's one of my favourite relationships in the entire series.

    • @frocat5163
      @frocat5163 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I also think it's critical that they establish this relationship early so that when Rand approaches Nynaeve for help cleansing _saidin,_ we can appreciate how significant it is that Lan looks at Rand almost as if Rand is a dangerous animal, as well as Rand's acceptance of that attitude. That small exchange spoke volumes to me as a reader.

    5:34:
    "With all of that, it was the man in the cage who caught and held Rand's eyes. He was not close enough to see Logain's face, as he wanted to, but suddenly he thought he was as close as he cared for. The false Dragon was a tall man, with long, dark hair curling about his broad shoulders. He held himself upright against the sway of the wagon with one hand on the bars above his head. His clothes seemed ordinary, a cloak and coat and breeches that would not have caused comment in any farming village. But the way he wore them. The way he held himself. Logain was a king in every inch of him. The cage might as well not have been there. He held himself erect, head high, and looked over the crowd as if they had come to do him honour. And wherever his gaze swept, there the people fell silent, staring back in awe. When Logain's eyes left them, they screamed in redoubled fury as if to make up for their silence, but it made no difference in the way the man stood, or in the silence that passed along with him. As the wagon rolled through the Palace gates, he turned to look back at the assembled masses. They howled at him, beyond words, a wave of sheer animal hate and fear, and Logain threw back his head and laughed as the Palace swallowed him."
    Truly an Amazing scene. Logain is such a great character.

      @@HallyVee Yes, I saw it! It obviously wasn't as grand a scale as in the books, but I'm glad they at least put it in and didn't cut it. It also is a pretty difficult scene to visualize the full scale of on screen. My only complaint was they focused on Logain and Mat, rather than Logain and Rand. I get they are trying to play up Mat as Dragon bait, but he really has no interaction with Logain later on, and the dynamic in the books between Logain and Rand, False Dragon and Dragon Reborn is great. Also Logain being gentled instead of shielded took away a bit of his presence, but I still enjoyed it. I absolutely love the casting for Logain though. Alvaro Morte is great!

      Given that there are 2700+ named characters in WoT, I would expect they will introduce new characters to merge multiple characters together or represent a class of characters, just to make things comprehensible in the far shorter time of a filmed version.

    Having finished the season here are the things they didn't give you:
    -No Rand and Tam making their way through the forest and the fever dream.
    -Not really a horror element to the first episode. It had some good tension in the attack, but I wouldn't call it horror
    -Didn't really keep the innocence of the characters or town at the beginning with characters aged up and more mature, Perrin killing his wife, and Matt being born of two abusive, drunk parents
    -We're not really getting a unique sense of cultures yet (especially since most places look like a United Nations meeting)
    -Blight was not well depicted and really was just another spooky forest.
    -Many of the characters (Matt & Lan most notably) did not remain true to their source

    a) Mat needs to know horses, Perrin needs to know smithing.
    b) The ways need to stay, as does the alternate dimension thingy with the pillars you use to shift between things in book 2.
    c) the magic needs to neither be amped up nor toned down, especially; the magic that doesn't have any obvious vfx needs to stay subtle.
    d) Moiraine needs to be presented as the actually powerful channeler she is.
    e) the blight; an idyllic lightly forested countryside/rotting desert
    f) Whitebridge is a perfect place to display a sci-fi-ish remnant from the age of legends.
    g) costumes including marriage knives is gonna be interesting to see
    h) for the end of the eye of the world, they need to make the role of the Eye as a pure source of Saidin for Rand to channel more clear.

    • @АндрейРомашов-ш7ч
      @АндрейРомашов-ш7ч 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Haku infinite But how are they supposed to "say their names correctly", though? This is a book, we never actually heard the names pronounced and each of us kinda made up the way names sound and stuck with it.
      For example, it seems that everyone in the show along with the actress who plays Leane believes her name is actually "Leanè" with an [ɛ]. I'm reading book 12 right now, I switched to reading them in English because there was no translation into Russian which is my native language. But books 1 to 10 I've read in Russian, so I was inclined to spell the names the way they were transliterated into my language. That's why I found "Leanè" to be the only reasonable way to spell it.
      But apparently - and I was a bit shocked to find that out - there's a lot of people who pronounce it "Leanee" with an [i]. And apparently it sounds right to them.
      So yes, for each of us there's a way to pronounce names, the way we used to. But if there's no Jordan's written will on the matter, none of those ways is more legitimate than the other.

    • @АндрейРомашов-ш7ч
      @АндрейРомашов-ш7ч 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Haku infinite Well I anticipated the phonetics rules argument and one could argue that there was no actual reason for Jordan to be rigorous about them. Those rules tell you how to read what is written and that's it. If the author didn't want to be explicit about the way names are to be pronounced then he could have just not bothered and spelled the names whatever way while pronouncing them whatever.
      Your argument that Jordan participated in creation of audiobooks of course leaves no room for that. Then I have to admit: there's actually a right way to pronounce them.
      But my point still stands: there are people pronouncing names differently and nothing could be done, we just have to accept that. If you'll hear the pronunciation in the show that will make you cringe, then well someone would have cringed if it was your way. They would have, even though you are technically right and they're not.
      And sometimes they are majority, and that raises more questions, but won't get into that.
      P.s. two different ways to pronounce "Leane" would be:
      lee-AHN-eh
      lee-AHN-ee

    Strong horror elements in at least the first season or two would be extremely important because it took Rand so long to even get to a competent level of being able to just defend himself. The horror elements would emphasize how helpless Rand is at the beginning of his journey and you could reduce them somewhat as the characters get more and more powerful through the books.

During the day: suspense-heavy, Psychological horror - oppressive silences, punctuated by thin, high-pitch strings, and low-frequency droning (á la Paranormal Activity). Sweeping panaramic views of the desolate crumbling city with the baleful sound of Trolloc hunting horns in the distance. Mordeth creeping about the place and casting no shadow, dry-washing his hands in anticipation.
    By night: Full-bore Supernatural horror. Don't touch the Mist, it'll eat you alive! Trollocs and Fades falling over each other to get at the party, and get out quick - brutally turning on each other when the stress and the fear of the city gets to them and they try to escape. Lots of tight close-up camera work, don't linger too long, and stay out of the shadows. Moiraine and Lan let off the chain, carving and blasting a path out of the city

    i really want to see the rand struggling with tam through the woods segment too. i'd understand if they cut it and did the same thing with rands character in a new, less time consuming way, but its such a great and intense sequence that sets up rands character, the setting, and the threat of evil beings. i agree there is so much opportunity for spoopyness and i really hope the show leans into the horror aspects

    When I first heard the idea of Perrin having a wife die in Emonds Field I wasnt really bothered by it but it just seemed like a fairly cheap way to raise the stakes towards leaving. The more I think about it the more I think it's paying forward an effort to add some weight to Perrin's relationship with Faile. Having a wife killed by trollocs is going to make Perrins obsession over protecting Faile seem a lot less clingy and more desperate.

    • @thebkg
      @thebkg 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't get behind this. Perrin is a young man. All three were the same age which was 19 or 20 I believe. All three had little experience with women. Perrin's desire to protect is a very very natural male trait, especially in men from more rural society. It was also his large build and greater strength than those around him that formed his need to be extra cautious not to harm people that helped form that part of his character. Giving him a wife is, to me, a drastic change to his character arc that seems wholly unnecessary.

    3:40 AGREE on leaning into the horror. Its so much harder to add in all the extra horribleness of the Shadow outside of the page format, hammering it home really hard in a horrific non-cheesy way (Good effects, good makeup, good choreography, lots of evil) will carry through and allow more understated things - like the dream appearances of ba'alzamon - to stand up even stronger.

    Based on the script titles released it definitely seems like the end of "The Eye of the World" will take place in Episode 4 and Episode 8 will take place around midway to 2/3 of the way through The Great Hunt - my bet is Rand's story will climax in Season One around one of the Portal Stone moments - waking up in alternate universe (how's that for a sci-fi element) or the finding out he fucked up and the group lost six months of time, meanwhile Egwene and company's story would end with getting captured by the Seanchan.
    As for the end of EotW, yeah... It makes no sense. What does Moiraine even do with the ground beneath Aginor? The way he Travels doesn't really match up with the way Traveling is explained to work later. It also establishes an early weakness of the entire series - lame final bosses. In the first place, Rand beats Ishmael *three times* over three books. Yeah, they need to adjust the end.

    Imagine if the Blight, as opposed to regular dark forest, is just soundless? While forest are always with that creepy atmosphere of “something is there” and with indistinguishable sounds, the blight is soundless, lifeless, the sounds of their steps being the only to fill up the night. Then contrast it with the other dimension from the Portal Stone, where there's no one but everything is in absolute peace.

    Here's an idea toward showing that Randland is somewhat a dystopian future of our world. What if the ruins of Shadar Logoth are designed more like mordernish buildings but done so with the artistic nature of the Ogier and whatever resources they had available? It is described as having many towers. Could these be mid-range skyscrapers made out of some special form of futuristic concrete now lost through the ages? The same as the White Tower/Tar Valon and other Ogier-built, ancient cities. Also, the White Tower itself could resemble a skyscraper.

    WoT is actually very close to Horror in genre.
    I had never realized that before until my reread of the series in the last couple of months. It would be really easy for the producers to make the series really really dark and scary. Honestly WoT needs a lot of changes in order to be adapted, however I'm dying to know what the change was the Sanderson didn't agree with at all. It's hard for me to speculate on what that would be, but I'm pretty confident that it's not about the supposed changes to Perrin's backstory. I can't think of a change that wouldn't be outright bad (like cutting Ogier or members of the main cast, for example) that would upset me or be a deal breaker for me. On the hole I'm mostly hyped for the good kind of editing that can come out of an adaptation. With the benefit of a complete series the show can trim a lot of the fat that's a consequence of the written medium (tons of description), the publishing situation at the time (book 1-3), books 9 and 10 running in parallel in the timeline, etc.
    Side note: More and more I'm thinking that they're gonna show Logain's origins leading up to and ending with his capture in S1 and the events in Caemlyn happening in S2, but maybe that's just due to the lack of Trakand casting announcements.

    Something that just occurred to me earlier today in considering when the travel through the Ways will be shown (I am really not convinced that they can do two books in the first season), was what Machin Shin whispers. The focus has been episode 5 being based on the chapter Blood Calls Blood in TGH, and it certainly could be without getting fully into TGH. But it occurred to me today that Blood Calls Blood could just as easily refer to Machin Shin, which would have them traveling through the ways at the beginning of ep 5.

That proved they were interested in him specifically. It also humanized the beast and that was Rands first kill. It probably made it more confusing for him. Lan was taken back by the fact that a trolloc spoke to rand so it obviously isn’t common. But the wolf head trollocs are said to be smarter than others. Cutting out back-story of ancient cities and battles is a hard nope. Moraine's story about Manetheron is important to later things and can't be cut out, and I feel like they need to start the show exactly as the book started with Lews Theron wondering around the palace, realizing what happened, and pulling in an obscene amount of the power to create dragon mount. I wouldn't even be made if they spend half the first episodes budget on this scene. It is a must. And then I would like the opening narrative about the wheel turning to be added in some how. Maybe Moraine can narrate that? As we get sweeping views of gorgeous foggy mountains as the camera comes to settle on the west road, Rand and Tam.
