The fact that the Deck’s OS is Linux gives everyone the added benefit of more and better capability. I uninstalled windows on my PC and never looked back.
I will also switch to Linux, as soon as there is widespread and reliable HDR support. There is nearly no HDR support on linux besides the steam deck. especially with nvidia gpus
I exclusively use Windows on my deck, and it works great. It's also nice not having to perform 80 steps to install a 3rd party launcher for games that aren't on steam. Or jump through a thousand folders to install mods on a game. If those issues can be solved and they can figure a way to get past the anticheat system on some games then I will go back to steam os but until then it's way too much hassle and with all I've done right now on windows it runs just as good.

@@KatelynTea I'm only aware of 2 big compatibility breaks with modern windows and old games, those are NTVDM and INMM. the lack of NTVDM breaks compatibility with all software that is too new for DOS but also too old for 32-bit windows. @@drunkenskunkproductionsdsp8094 well some people just don’t have a need for it. The switch has switch exclusives, the Xbox/ps5 has a lot of power (and game pass ultimate), while the steam deck just comes with portability. All games you can play on there you can play on other devices
The switch and the steam deck are the consoles I use the most. The ps5 barely has any exclusives and I prefer having the mobility of the switch and steam decks. Nintendo also has so many ips, it’s insane.
Specially if you buy the Switch Lite. Its actually portable unlike the Steam Deck that is a giant brick. As much as i understand the points and where they come from, i cant help but shake the feeling that people still dont give the love that the Switch deserves. Funnily enough, it´s very popular in japan, the bastion of gaming.
Overall I prefer my switch lite over the deck just because its not as big and heavy. Also the xbox series x is really nice due to it being backwards compatible with all previes xbox consoles. I know backwards compatibility isn't a selling point for most but xbox emulation barely works on pc so i enjoy the console for that.
@@rafaelf.9246 I really don’t get this “it’s more portable” discussion. It’s on your back or at your hip, it doesn’t make a difference.
I think of the steam deck as just a handheld console with its sole purpose being to play games you have on steam. I wouldn't really call it a PC since steam is the only thing on there you can use unless you download the other stuff and emulation and all that.
Those companies will eventually come around as PC handhelds and PC gaming in general continues to grow. The bigger the Linux player base gets, the harder it is to ignore.
I heard mention on the WAN show that microsoft was looking at moving the security layer where the anti-cheats usually are out of the kernal. Cant say how accurate the claim is but it'd improve compatability if it happens.
I think console players are only looking at cost of a PC short term. Because that's what consoles are; a short term generational purchase from companies that tend to exploit them in other ways. PC on the other hand is a long term investment. Its open and modular design allow for a platform to evolve and be upgraded organically. The thing is, you don't spend money on subscription, you don't spend money on getting online, you never spend extra money on games with marked-up prices (Sony-/Microsoft- or Nintendo- tax), You don't need to buy HD remasters of your favorite games (because there are no "generations" and you can always bump up resolution & settings in older games or download visual mods for them). If you don't play the latest games they often come on sale extremely cheap. And ultimately, you keep your games for A VERY LONG TIME (I have games from 20 years ago on Steam... and emulation covers my gaming childhood in the 80's and 90's). The Steam Deck is THE best entry-point into PC gaming, it's a simple and cheap console-like purchase, and it will probably spark interest of getting into PC gaming in the future. And people should go that route, I have done some calculations and PC has actually been A LOT cheaper than consoles over time. (also keep in mind that 2000-4000$ PCs are premium PCs with often 200% or even 300% of console performance, you can generally build a console-like PC for around 900-1200$)
Straight facts my man. Plus having a capable computer opens the door to doing more taxing non-gaming tasks and just improving computer related productivity in general.
A console like pc for 900 to 1200$ that will be obselete in 5 years because game devs KEEP making shitty unoptimized game that requires dlssx 6.7 to run at 30 fps(144p upscaled to 720p), yes i understand that's not the PCs fault, but it's still a truth you have to accept when buying a pc nowadays And steamdeck which is pretty powerful for it's size i must admit, but it's not an international product and it will cost a crazy amount in many countries Compare that to a console that will last it's full 7 years easily without needing upgrades(sadly consoles have the issue where every game dev seems to care only about graphics and forget the frames, resulting in a beautiful game that runs at 30/60 fps) I myself have a ps5 because i already had a tv and i wanted something to use with my brother without needing to worry whether my brother will mess it up, so a ps5 seemed like a great option I am saving up for a pc currently, but that's months away, especially with how a fucking 4060 costs like 500$ in my country
Can confirm. I went the lenovo legion go route to play windows 11 games and absolutely no regrets. I wholeheartedly agree with the video when you state "why you fell in love with games in the first place'. This was it. Now, my pc, ps5 and xbox collect dust :)
4:27 also if you only use a tv for video gaming and don't watch 'live' television you don't need a licence. My experience with living in the UK with a tv for just gaming. Now I live in Australia where TV licence doesn't exist.
i won't buy a steamdeck _yet_ until portable gaming PC becomes really good and on par to the ps5, and valve still support it's customers and not turn into apple
Way to ignore WIi that stomped the absolute shit out of both consoles with their casual appeal. I hated that time in gaming because people were so rabid about their favorite console causing even bigger divide in gaming. Now Epic Games Store is buying up exclusives trying to fan the flames again to fight a console war on the PC market. Also Rockstar being the biggest douchenozzle with their launcher as well. Gaming is better than it has ever been but some companies are trying to crab drag us back to the bullshit era. Steam Deck is amazing and if Valve really does allow ROG Ally (and other handhelds) to SteamOS, the gamers are the winners. Imagine the functionality of the Deck with better hardware. PC gamers are eating so well right now and the cooking is getting better.
@@lyure8939 Having a PC is nice though because if you have good wifi it can extend the life of your Steamdeck through Moonlight streaming, letting you play demanding games that the deck can't run on it. PCs are not expensive compared to consoles. For one, there's no subscription just to play online, or a fee to change your username, stuff like that. Games are also massively cheaper, with blowout deals all the time. And you can easily get a capable gaming PC for $700-800 that will not only rival the PS5 pro, but be better anyway. PCs also just have way more features, and you can mod your games with ease and get more replayability from your entire library. Genuinely, consoles have no reason to exist. Steam Deck is awesome though, but that is just a handheld PC after all.
And gaming PC actually last longer for years, take a look at the RX 5700 XT + Ryzen 3600x combo, runs every modern game at 1440p smoothly. I rather pay 600$ on a gaming PC where it take years to update my specs, has freedom, ultrawide, K&M with low input lag and has mods or good exclusives.
@@Lestibournes Just because consoles are simpler than PCs doesn't mean PCs are complicated. They're still pretty simple, basically everyone knows how to use one. If you don't know how to navigate Windows, you likely won't know how to navigate a console's dashboard.
The Steam Deck has its own flaws like not having clear information on what will and will not run on it propperly (like intended). Got a Switch and it is fine with its library of games. For the delta in price I can buy 15 to 30 games before spending as much as the SD costs.
also if u r really in a minimum wage absolute budget situation, steam deck is a worthy investment since you can still install pirated games. Meaning you could buy a steam deck and never spend a dime on video games.
OLED does perform slightly better in some games due to having faster RAM (6400 MT/s compared to 5500 MT/s RAM used in the LCD model). Digital Foundry confirmed that in their review of the OLED. RAM speed matters a lot on a device like the Steam Deck because the iGPU uses part of RAM as VRAM.
i don’t even play my PS5 anymore honestly worst investment made. I love my steam deck I’ve modified it and done so much internal customization, emulation , ran native Nintendo pc ports, and there’s ways to make games run with some thorough research and modifications.
There's something about holding your entire steam library in your hands, or running Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition on that glorious OLED. All those kick ass games from between 2012 to 2020 are coming back to life on this thing. Don't buy it because you have some illusion that you'll be using it in a café or at an airport, nobody fucking goes anywhere anymore. But being able to play anywhere else in your house other than at your desk is worth the cost of admission. And yes, I have a 4090 and two ultrawides.
Its better to play games than to use a controller. The steam decks complete feature set is the ONLY exception to this rule. If they dropped ONE thing from the deck for production there wouldn't have been a point in using it either.
I completely agree with you, but I'm in South Africa. So PCs are even MORE expensive and Steam Decks are overpriced as hell and were only available recently, so a PS5 just met every use case I had, besides like you said, nothing is exclusive really so its not like I've been hurting for games. I'd totally get one if I had the disposable income, but I always think why not just buy the game on PS5/Switch instead. There are rumors of Microsoft creating a handheld, maybe they can actually compete on that front.
Absolutely. My husband got me an OLED one for my birthday in March. We're now in December and it's still my primary gaming device. It's extremely rare for me to boot up any games on my gaming laptop now. He's also building himself a new tower, meaning I'll inherit his current one, and I'm looking forward to that but not especially excited. I'm also thinking of getting a Switch next year so I can finally see for myself how much worse ACNH is compared to NL (and also because Nintendo does have a lot of other games I'd love to play, such as the Xenoblade Chronicles remake and XBCX), but then I remember I already have a fantastic handheld with over a thousand games I can play on it.

Very good video, but you should mention that if you have a PS5 or a Series X or even already have a PC, you can stream games from them to the Steam Deck too, and then of course emulators as well. You can play basically any game released in the last 30 years on the Deck with the exception of the latest systems, it's honestly crazy good
Just received mine this week taking advantage of the ongoing sale. I travel a lot due to work so I can't lay my ps5 often, so this is the most excited I been about gaming in a while, been having a blast playing on emulators and a fee games I had on my steam account!! My fight was in the sixth gen 👴 Do teens now still care enough about video games to argue which PS/Xbox is better? Looking from the outside in i find it hard to believe, since every game people play now is multiplatform
In response to the Switch footage of Mortal Kombat, there's 100% better looking games on Switch (no, I'm not saying the Switch has graphical masterpieces, this is just a case of poor optimization) Also you weren't using the PS5 vertical stand on right.
I think steam deck is good console, i have one. But i think other consoles are good too! Look, you buy ps5 or xbox series and you get the good way to play games, there is not bad gaming devices right now. Remember atari jaguar or 3do… these are really bad consoles, where are no games! Not like now “eww, this console have no exclusive games, i wont play it”, but really now games(jaguar have ~50 games, the most of them are… bad). Now everybody who bought gaming device: pc, steam deck, ps, xbox (i would say switch, i really love my one, but it is very old, so now… it is the worst choice) - they get really cool and interesting experience
Man every time I hear people complain about “ps5 has no games” then bring pc ports into the reasons is just sad man. Can people just stop being so pathetic that games being more accessible is somehow a issue now

@@Tougebeat My guy consoles exclusives being on PC has no impact on the other consoles. How would gran turismo being on PC impact forza series? If anything we will see improvement since Forza is coasting as the only good racing series on pc right now, gran turismo might actually improve the games

A big draw for people to buy a console though is playing on a big tv with friends/family locally. Something that a home pc doesn't really provide well. You should have mentioned that you can buy the valve docking station to hook up the steam deck to a tv and plug some controllers in for the classic console experience. The steam deck truly trumps the consoles right now. Great video!
The deck is the only computer worth buying as a gamer. Everything is just insanely clean. I can also bring that dock down to my living room and hook up 2 $15 wireless anbernic P01 controllers to it because I can use any controller I want on it.

Controversial I know but the Deck might be my most favorite console of all time. I’ve also got a PS5 but barely use it, I’ve been having so much fun with the Deck revisiting older games as well as enjoying newer titles. The OLED screen is amazing, desktop mode to tinker with things, Steam sales are far superior to the console sales, it feels great to play in your hands. 1000% agree. In addition to all the native games on steam you can run emulators on the thing meaning you can play all your favorite ps3 era games and prior on the thing as well. Many developers do take it specifically into account though. All those "Steam Deck Verified" games have Steam Deck specific settings so it's plug and play like on a console.
You also forgot to mention that, with the Steamdeck, you can stream games from your pc OR PS5 with either Moonlight or Chiaki4Deck so if you are fine with streaming and want better graphics you can do that. I do it for Bf 2042 on my Legion Go since the game doesn't run well on it natively and I played Spider Man Remastered through Chiaki4Deck on my Legion as well and it was amazing. (I didn't buy Spider Man on steam because I got the disc for free).
You can also stream games from steam or third party applications ( sunshine and moonlight) over the wifi, making your PC do all the hard work and easily getting 60+ frames on your steam deck cause you can lighten the load on the pc making it run at 720 or 900p or not to mention the 5 to 6+ hours runtime on the deck. It's a nice way to game if you are in the house and you don't need to install the massive games into the steam deck as well
PC is quite a bit more expensive for its hardware value compared to console hardware value. That's why. It's all in comparison. A $1000(give or take a couple hundred) PC is approximately equivalent to a $500 console for similar performance. PCs can be as cheap and crappy or as expensive and powerful as you want, but when it comes to value vs. a console for gaming, it's quite expensive. This is all just hardware value, by the way. There's arguments about software and subscription prices as well, which are cheaper on PC.
@sawdust8691 Yeah, but it's not like you have to build a completely new PC every few years. You can even buy used parts if you want to. I built my PC in 2017 and upgraded here and there. Much cheaper than buying a PS4 Pro, then a PS5, and then a PS5 Pro.
There are only two generations of console wars where you'd be victorious fighting for either side. First was Snes vs. Genesis, and the second was Ps3 vs 360. You couldn't go wrong with any of those consoles. Both sides had hits after hits.
In Mexico, the problem lies in the price. While a Switch costs between 3500 and 4500 MXN, the Steam Deck cannot be purchased directly from Steam, so the cheapest one costs 9000 MXN
My laptop cost me 900 dollars which also got a freaking screen and is better than both consoles and I can eventually play all console games on PC and mod them all. I find consoles pretty expensive compared to total pros of PC.
Playstation Portable is a joke. They had a app for PS3 and PS4 so you could miracast from the console to a phone to play in another room about 10 feet away. They also had PS4 cellphone apps for games like Metal Gear Phantom Pain that was supposed to upload data to servers to work with the game.

Imagine living in a place not having a TV so the TV police won't come after you.
Omfg I thought that was a joke
who won this generation valve
Valve has been winning the entire PC scene since 2003
Been a nintendo fan since the game boy. And aside from snes we lost just about every battle. However there is no doubt Nintendo is winning the war. Nintendo games and their characters are iconic.
fanboyism is cringe
So many nerds here talking about graphics, man I went back to ps3 currently playing Enslaved Odyssey to the West and having a blast. Buying that badboy for 50€ with shit ton of games is better then ps5, xbox, switch and crappy steam deck together.
I've bought more games for my Switch since it came out than I have for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Series X combined. The only other games left to come out this year that I'm interested in are Switch games too... 🤷♂
I wanna say same but I'm so hyped for dragon ball sparking zero, hopefully it'll be okay on deck
I also have one and it is the best buy I ever made! You can install windows and have 2 systems at the same time - windows and steam os - and just select which one to load and there you go. Full PC, full console, megafun. And can take it anywhere with you
I had a steam deck, but the performance wasnt really there for me, so i sold it and bought an rog ally, such a good decision fr
Was a console girl a long time so when prices really went whack. I did research and decided to get a steamdeck and honestly I haven't gone back. It's makes me feel like a kid with a overpowered gameboy I love it!! I feel bad my ps4 and xbox are just somewhere. what a waste of resources.
The steam deck is not a console they don't make games specifically for it it is a linux-based PC
3 minutes to get to the point.
It's a nice way to game if you are in the house and you don't need to install the massive games into the steam deck as well
Why do people say pcs are expensive? A pc can cost as little as £100 to as high as £10 000
PC is quite a bit more expensive for its hardware value compared to console hardware value.
@@sawdust8691 assuming you play online, over the course of the lifetime of the ps5, the costs will be higher overall
Have you included your electricity bill? Those RTX 4090 burn 500w it aint be cheap right
@@jackykwan2580 electric is included in my rent. I rent i'm not a home owner
There are only two generations of console wars where you'd be victorious fighting for either side. First was Snes vs. Genesis, and the second was Ps3 vs 360. You couldn't go wrong with any of those consoles. Both sides had hits after hits.
Already preloaded god of war Ragnarok for my steamdeck 🎉🎉🎉 just 3 hours until it unlocks 😅😅
In Mexico, the problem lies in the price. While a Switch costs between 3500 and 4500 MXN, the Steam Deck cannot be purchased directly from Steam, so the cheapest one costs 9000 MXN
And the cheap one Is bullshit
My laptop cost me 900 dollars which also got a freaking screen and is better than both consoles and I can eventually play all console games on PC and mod them all.
I find consoles pretty expensive compared to total pros of PC.
Playstation Portable is a joke. They had a app for PS3 and PS4 so you could miracast from the console to a phone to play in another room about 10 feet away. They also had PS4 cellphone apps for games like Metal Gear Phantom Pain that was supposed to upload data to servers to work with the game.
It took this dude 1/3 of the video to get to the point. When he mentioned the steam deck I realized I'd forgotten why I clicked the video.
Yet you kept watching :D
You're right. Even though I don't work at home, it feels weird to work on a grey laptop, only to go home and game on a grey laptop.
Something about the title, the Steam Deck is not a console, that's a common misconception, the Steam Deck is actually a handheld Linux PC
i just bought a nintendo switch lite and got it modded :3
Modding it yourself is better
Not the console wars is 2024
Can’t agree more friend. I have gamed all my life (my first machine was an Atari 2600.. ancient) and getting a Steam Deck was the single best gaming purchase I have made in my life. So grateful this thing exists.
If only the battery was better
Are you referring to the OLED one?
@@Emorejets All of them, the big games drain battery quickly
What's the average battery time for a big game?
@harmster03 depends but it drains quickly
@@harmster03 From my experience if I were playing something like an emulated Gamecube game around 3-4 ish hours. If its something like God Of War 2019 at max brightness and no tweaking the display hz maybe around an hour 45
The only problem with the steam deck is that I've owned it since it came out but have NEVER taken it outside my house because it's too expensive for me to risk breaking it.
