If you ever need anything for this car, my next door neighbor has one in the same colour and same year and I hate him. Let me know and I’ll strip it off it at night and send you it
Your videos are great and just show what can be done on the driveway. Since I started watching them I have changed the alternator, thermostat housing, brake discs and pads on an. 04 Ford Ka, and the rear shocks on my air sprung Mercedes CLS. Thanks Savage Garage.
Great video, thanks for the quick follow up. Can't wait to get hold of this coolant pressure kit. Last Tuesday I helped a friend with his e46 1998 BMW 3 Series. The coolant level was too low. After bleeding the system there was no leakage visible. He texted me a few days later about a coolant hose that was leaking coolant. I'd probably noticed that with this kit.
honest review I agree, I know when we were bleeding my dads E39 540 after he hit a deer, same damage, grille, radiator and it took about 7-8 attempts to get all the air out, ended up with front end at almost 45 degrees and a plastic bottle used as a big funnel to act as a high point. These mini coolant systems look similar, hate expansion tanks being part of the rad, always a sod to bleed properly. Peugeots used to be the same
Take it for an Italian Tuneup. When its up to temp you will soon see if the car overheats. Some leaks only open up with expansion and preasure, common one is cracked head. Very hard to find some times.
Would the fact its losing coolant not be when the engine is overheating, the coolant expands and evaporates out through the expansion tank? Only way to test is to drive it and see. Plus bubbles coming through the coolant normally means combustion gas is escaping and entering the cooling system, as far as I have learned at college when bleeding the cooling system you won't see bubbles in the coolant if its an air lock. Also when bleeding the system it needs to be pressurised then take the cap off afterwards.
Just caught up with your mini project, Had a Gen 1 Cooper S, thermostat failed stopping the fan increasing the rpm to match engine temp, it caused the expansion cap to pop off when the engine got really hot. few months later had the seam fail around the middle of that tank, letting steam out from pin size hole, may have been weakened by the earlier issue though, not sure how related the 2 engines are, but something to bare in mind
Check the exhaust mounts as they snap. If you lift the boot mat out you will see 4 dimples in the body sealant which is actually the welds for the brackets. I had to drill them out to replace the brackets
@@TomRxtroWav397 if the head is shifting because of dowel problems then letting it run like he has won't show up. Plus idling the engine isn't putting the same amount of stress on the head /gasket that ragging it down some country lanes would
@Kris Nicholson Fair point, never seen it happen myself, but on a car of little value its worth the risk over the cost of swapping the engine is it not?
When he drives it on the road he will find its got a blown head gasket. He was running it with the cap off and air was bubbling up. When the cap is fitted and the car is driven on the road it will over heat after about 10 min. Guaranteed .
I’ve got a mini one that has this same problem. Needs a passenger regulator. The motor is working 99% of the time but the daft string mechanism is all over the place
The regulator motor contractors wear out you can just take it apart because it has to come out anyway and put some folded paper under the spring and they are good to go again
that passenger window gets stuck on mine, I don't think its the motor. I think its something to do with a position sensor as the window is designed to drop when you open the door. try opening and closing the door a few times and see what happens? mine goes through phases of getting stuck, then seems to be ok again. also try silicone spray on the runners
Something that will make a massive difference to the look of the mini are rejuvenated plastics. The cheapest and fastest way is of course a can of silicon spray. A more durable way would be to paint them with a special plastic paint. Keep the good work up James, love the Mini Project.
Really enjoyed the video!👍 Fingers crossed for the coolant. Certainly looks like you’ve sorted it with ease! It’s got the makings of a great car and can’t wait to see it develop. It’s my favourite of your project vehicles.
Exhaust - rubber hangers mount on bolts welded to floor. Hangers always perish. Bolts can snap, if so, drill thro' boot floor and use normal bolts, so have some ready!
Great video as always. I suspect the movement in the back box isn't caused by knackered rubber mounts. They are designed to work when the exhaust is in one piece. As your exhaust has broken completely its not being support by the mid box side allowing it to rock
Nice one, you could get a heat gun to the plastic trims and restore them to their black look, would take years off the car. It would be good to see a video of someone doing it properly as well. You could even do a little comparison of methods of getting plastics back to black? Love the vids, proper honest stuff.
Why didn't any of the pressure test blow off into the expansion tank without a cap on? I hope that you got away with it but I seriously don't understand. It's all connected!
Because the radiator cap has a spring on it and rubber seal set to a certain pressure like a thermostat so when the coolant heats up and expands it releases allowing the coolant volume to fluctuate hence the name 'expansion tank' . Stops your coolant system going boom. Lol al shut up with the nerdy science crap lol:-)
Long shot that you’ll see this but I’m trying the get my central locking to work via the key buttons. Battery has been replaced - infrared light shows when pressing the buttons. Fuse has been replaced. F37 I believe. What else can I do? Having trouble locating the relay - some say it’s in the rear view mirror? Great videos - help out another mini owner please! Same model as yours
Had the same cooling system issue and like some have said previous only pressurised/overheated on a drive was head/headgasket keep up the great work tho!
I was going to say about the rear mount. Just be careful that the bolt isn’t seized as it’s part of the boot floor and can be a real pain! Love the MINI videos they’re great little cars.. very solid and have a characterful whine from the electric power steering. Worth finding out if you have the (good) getrag gearbox as opposed to the (bad) midland gearbox. The Cooper also generally had a nice little chrome exhaust tip on the end that you swapped over. 👍
What I do with sticking electric windows & sunroofs for that matter is to spray all the rubber rails with cockpit shine or plastic trim cleaner from the pound shop, it's basically silicon spray & is a very cheap way to do it & long lasting.
James, reaĺly hoping you've been lucky with ye ol' head gasket, but have you considered things backwards? You pumping a coupla times on that fleabay test tool does not equate to the pressure that a combustion chamber will put OUT. You may have no water IN the chamber, but a piston will press gasses out at a much, much higher PSI. I.e. no leak 'into' chamber but combustion gas 'out' into coolant. Have a good drive of it and report back. Good lad, keep up the enthusiasm! 😊
Hey man nice to see German car on the channel. Iv just changed a window motor on a 02 mini. Would highly recommend if you changing the motor to change the cables as well they have common fault where the cables Frey And get jammed.

I have to do this. I recommend that you just go overkill. So instead of using just two jack stands on the correct points use another pair on another section underneath the car. Also use proper wheel chocks and not just bricks
Nice little cars these. I've just sold my 2005 Cooper. Bought it cheap cleaned it up slightly modified, few track days. They are nice to work with been bmw parts too
Exhaust is not a bad job on a 2 post lift must be killer on the drive. I’m doing up cars with the chief of design of mini back when those cars were built so can always ask him for anything for you.
Just smell inside the water bottle and radiator cap and if it smells like petrol then the hg is gone or has a cracked sleeve / cylinder, also check if steam comes out the exhaust when reversing the car
CO2 leak tester can tell you on any vehicle you're purchasing within seconds if the head gasket has gone. The head gasket can be slightly failed and just suffer a coolant loss & overheat. If it's been to a garage they've 100% put a CO2 leak tester on it and it has exhaust gasses in the coolant system. The only way the CO2 leak tester doesn't work, is if the waterpump has failed and isn't operating. You can tell the water pump is gone if the air doesn't warm up in the cabin after idling from cold for a while. A lot of people with head gasket or cracked cylinder heads will disable the water pump, warm it up and sell it on a hot engine.

I know where the coolant is going I had the same issue and how to fix it the issue lies with the reservoir cap missing over time the coolant evaporates when the water warms up off how I fixed it was to fit a cooper s reservoir with a screw top instead of the clip on cap plus the thermostat at the rear of the engine leaks when warm as the seal perishes on these engines
