For info, the Triple QX oil is not a cheapo oil. Its repackaged Shell Helix !. So its very good, but at a discounted price. Ive been using QX on my 510hp Saab for 8yrs or so.
Used Triple QX in my TDI Seat Leon for 6 years. Car is 16 years old with 140,000 miles and still has the original turbo - I know that because I've owned since 2006.
Triple QX is actually refined in France, but all of their oils meet the specifications they are supposed to, and all are dealer approved, meaning they have been tested by O.E labs and meet their criteria
My first car way back in 1986 was a 1977 950cc classic mini with a coloured sky blue body and a white roof... now 33years later my youngest lad who's 20 yrs old just arrived home with a 2004 1.6 mini with a dark blue coloured body and a white roof lol.. Keep your video's coming pal, love the fact that your not a mechanic but like me you want to learn.. Best wishes..👍👍😁
James at 12:54 it looks like the center of the old filter is still in the cap, hence why it was difficult to push the new one on. At 13:23 you can see the same thing inside the new filter, I'd change it again or at least get the plastic tower out.
I can confirm this, not long serviced my mini, and I did not have that plastic tower bit sticking out when I changed filter. I had to go through all of comments to see if anybody else spotted this! Otherwise a job well done and would have a go at this myself if needed. Thanks for the great content!
Tip on those oil filters: get a plastic bag and put it over the filter before you draw it out of the housing. Then fold it into the plastic bag as you remove it. Saves a lot of mess!
this was a very helpful vedio for me.I just purchased a 06 mini with a blown head gasket, and have no working knowledge of how I was going to repair the issue. Now I feel more informed as to how to go about the repair.
I’ve been looking forward to the end result and you didn’t disappoint. You should be extremely proud of yourself buddy, no small job that. Well done that man 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Good work, well done. I’ve had some success cleaning header tanks with a dishwasher tablet, some warm water and a good shake, then tip it out. Add some more warm water and use a bottle brush to get at the stubborn bits.
Hell yeah starts first time and didn't even struggle Brilliant result!! with all the hard work and attention to detail you put into this job I'd of been very surprised if it went any other way. Nice touch letting your good lady do the honours starting it too bet it made her day hearing it bursting into life again. Well done James on another great job 👍
Just an FYI, with canister style filters crack the filter housing off before you drain the oil, it allows all the oil in the housing to drain into the sump. Only about 0.4 or so of a litre but every little helps
you all prolly dont care at all but does someone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account?? I was dumb forgot the login password. I love any help you can give me!
@Andrew Gary Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and im in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Mate i dont know what it is about your videos but they are so relaxing. Every video you do has an absolutely great vibe about them. You are an inspiration mate honestly. You are one of the best out there man and i cannot wait for more vids. I cant get enough. Keep on going bud. Loved the mini series 👌👌 hats off to you
Good work on the mini throughly enjoy the series and all the work you have done on your other cars. You have inspired me to start my own little project this summer. Keep up the good work, cant wait to see the mini on the road.
Just wanted to say thanks for these mini videos. Gave me the confidence to buy a mini one that needed a head gasket. Followed your videos and did the job perfectly. Now my daughter has a great little car 😁
Great work. I have learned from this. I also have a Cooper. It slowly loses a small amount of coolant and hesitates to start. I had resealed the stat housing thinking that was the leak. I never thought of the tissue on a stick to test for coolant in the combustion chamber.
Thought I would share a good tip I was given years ago. If you want to clean out bottles on a car put uncooked rice in the bottle with the degreaser and give it a really good shake, make sure you rinse it well after and make sure all the rice is gone works wonders. 👍🏻
just binged this mini series! Very similar to the astra series which was my favourite so far! Great work especially with filming as well. Glad it fired up for you!
Just a tip always check gsf carparts against eurocarparts as they have sales that beat euro for things I mean 10l oil 2 filters and flush for 2 cars was 40quid.
The reason you got coolant out the oil first, then the oil, is water sinks to the lowest point, and luckily it hadn't emulsified, so it was separate. I would say, the oil coming out, would carry any excess coolant with it, so you could probably get away with just using the new oil, dont bother changing it again until its needed, and thinking about it, af there is any traces of mousture, they would be evaporated off anyway. You could wait until engine us hit, take off the oil cap, and if it dont splash, just let it steam off, jtst like how I dry my biofuel after washing it and draining off the water. Andrew Mckenna, Nottingham.
Cracking job done, there is always that little worry of "what if?" in the back of your mind when carrying out anything major. Sounds good and hopefully should last a while.
Good work mate! Glad she fired right up. I've just fixed a BMW x5, 3.0l d auto box problem for my father in law. Garage quoted him grands for new box, I saved him a fortune! Stuffs always better when you can do the job yourself and get a positive result. :-)
You can clean inside the expansion tank with a bottle brush (the type you can buy for cleaning baby bottles) and they're just a few pounds for a pack of 3.
I've ran triple QX in my last couple of cars with no problem's at all. At the end of the day euro's supply trade as well so your getting exactly the same as what you would on a service. The exhaust does sound nice! Job well done!
Good job , all looks good. Just make sure the electric fan is coming on at the correct temp. You will be able to monitor it on your scan tool. Well done.
Hello sir, I've just found these video's for the mini. Bloody brilliant !! as i've just got a 2005 cooper..I know it's 3 years down the line but..Not seen them all yet still got sum to watch... keep it up fella.CHEER'S..
Nice quick start, like it should be! Quite a loud tick though? The 2 minis in my circle of friends are nowhere near that loud. My mums is totally silent running, can barely tell it’s on. Great work, keep it up!
Very well done! That was a lot of hard work both in fixing the car and producing the video blog. Your very good at both, looking forward to the next video.

Change the oil filter when the oil pan is open. You will see more oil drain out. Nice video man from France !
Good job done , your TLC for the mini seems to have paid off , really you should get some good running miles from your mini , I enjoyed watching the fix , well done 👍👍 from Tony from bedfordshire
It's been great and very easy to change my sons mini copper head gasket by your videos I will hopefully finish tomorrow and get ready to starting up finger's Cross
Clever, get the misses to start it. If it starts the camera pans to a smiling you. If the valves smashed into the pistons the camera pans to her followed by a a tut, tut, tut. 😁
Spark plugs - clean anything off with a brass brush, then heat up the electrodes until they glow red, hold them in a vice, they grt damn hot. If they smoke, theres something on them. Blast it off with brakes cleaner, heat them up again til they glow with no smoke. Brush off any oxidation. Mini plugs arent cheap! If the plugs are breaking down badly (a LOT of orange colouring on the ceramic) Replace
The fear/nervousness you get before starting a car up after major work never goes away. However many you do. I've even seen experienced blokes like Eric O bricking it before turning the key. 😂 Keep up the good work mate.
I would leave the plugs out, pull the fuel injection fuse, and crank the engine over to get the oil circulating to the top of the engine prior to 1st start up.
Well done James. The 36mm socket you have is probably for the Mondeo it has the same canister type oil filter. Are you back working on the Mondeo soon??
Little tip, I used a packet of the popcorn you microwave to clean out the expansion bottle. The stuff is like ball bearings and was all I had at the time. Worked brilliantly and the expansion bottle came up like new... Liked the bit about your mam buying your pants.... haha.
Good job! Enjoyed the series and has shown these minis are fairly easy to work on hopefully will give others confidence to tackle things like this themselves 👍🏻
Well done with the head gasket + headwork! Done the exact same on my 14 16v corsa b it started the same as the mini did, i was prepared for a fight to get it started but it fired up straight away 😈😈 Keep up the good work!
Good Job mate. Love it. So good to see it running and back up again. I wanted to say fingers crossed that it's all good. But I know it is cause the one handed youtube mechanic James did it. Also consider doing an affiliate program with ebay and Amazon to put affiliate links on your videos when you do reccomend tools and whatnot. It's a good source of revenue even if it comes as small amounts.
Got a set of 3 ratchets for 29 quid Draper expert Just a tip Turn engine over before starting , till oil light goes out to get pressure up after a oil change to late now but tip for future
Since you done all this work you could have also removed the sump and given it a good clean. Also you could have removed the radiator and given a good flush with a hose pipe.
Good stuff, James. Regards coolant for a BMW Mini....always best to go with the manufacturers recommended type. The colour of coolant usually denotes whether or not is can be safely used in aluminium or iron blocked engines. Or a mixture of iron block and aluminium head. Your original gasket/head issue would probably be down to someone not using the right coolant or only using water...and now onto the 'De-ionised water'. Yes absolutely use that...tap water is not good for engines. How much did you pay for it?? You can safely use water that you recover from a de humidifier (if you have one) or the water collector from a tumble dryer...Is it de ionised or distilled? Well no it's not but it has evaporated from it's original state into a purer form of water. No need to spend money is the main thing (I had to buy some dionised water when is Spain /in an emergency and it was 12 euros for 2 litres FFS!!) 50/50 mix is best....a little more of water or coolant doesn't really matter..only when topping up it's best to use the same 50/50 mix otherwise you dilute the coolant and therefore reduce its effectiveness in cooling and anti corrosive qualities...Keep up the good work.
Got to get yourself one of the spill free funnels, they're fantastic. You leave it on (with extra coolant) while you're running the car after filling and all the air can bubble out (keep topping it up), wait for the thermostat to open and fans to come on then turn the car off and leave the funnel on until it's cooled down, car will suck in all the fluid it needs and be totally full. Put in the plug in the funnel, take it out and use the excess to fill the expansion tank. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00A6AS6LY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_J-s0CbJ2MRJD5
Ha! I have a 36mm socket that I can't remember what I bought it for either. (I use it on my Rover 75 to change the oil filter now - same design of filter housing as well)
Well done James! Top job sounds mint with it purring away nicely! Eagerly awaiting the road test thanks for the heads up on the draper ratchets I happen to have not long killed my 1/2" drive ratchet so just ordered one from ebay at 12.99 so very pleased for the heads up! Keep up the good work and quality content!
Massive relief bud. Must have been sweating bullets. Nothing like the satisfaction of a good job finished.
Aslong as the oil meets the necessary standard which it does in this case there is no issue.
How do you know its repackaged Shell Helix?
@@mohitl1697 There is plenty of info in the web, just research it. The Triple QX company address is also the same of the Shell research plant.

Sounds good after all the work you’ve done. I used to build them at the factory in Oxford. Great work, very informative.
Wow, production date of my mini is 19-12-2003
Tip on those oil filters: get a plastic bag and put it over the filter before you draw it out of the housing. Then fold it into the plastic bag as you remove it. Saves a lot of mess!

Oil floats on water so it will be at the bottom of the sump
Not wierd at all. General knowledge
Just an FYI, with canister style filters crack the filter housing off before you drain the oil, it allows all the oil in the housing to drain into the sump. Only about 0.4 or so of a litre but every little helps

I’m crying at that Inbetweeners scene, made my day😂 Suggested more banter a while ago on Insta, I’m not disappointed😁
By the looks of the coolant bottle someones put radweld in that car mate, just be wary if you have any heater or rad problems
that's a mix of oil and water

As a nvq level 4 mechanic I can say triple qx is one of the best oils you can buy it's rebranded shell helix
These Mini videos have been brilliant. Well done, superb work!
Clean header tank with sand/water mix, shake it about. Thoroughly rinse. Sorted.
Best video yet, can’t believe it just fired up! Good skills mate.
Well done James, the proof of the pudding will be when you give it a good road test and the system presurises. Any week spots will soon show up.

To clean the coolant reservoir tank: Put water, soap and some tiny rocks in it, give it a good shake for about 10 mins and it should be clean inside!
Very well done! That was a lot of hard work both in fixing the car and producing the video blog. Your very good at both, looking forward to the next video.

ahh there it is the start up of the Engine.. it was in my mind for the last 3 days..... Great mini video story!! Nice one James...
A real labour of love and a lot of hard work, well done .
Really enjoyed the mini videos. So happy she runs lovely. That exhaust sounds great!
If you slacker the oil filter housing, then drain the oil it won't make a mess when removing it ✌🏼
another job well done James you have saved a potential car from the scrappers. atb Steve
Cool - letting the other half do the honours is such a good move. Great job on the car as well :-) .
you can clean the reservoir by putting some tiny gravels and mix it with water and shake it like never before ;)
A mini sounding healthy isn't something you hear often. Hats off for bothering
I can sleep well tonight. Good job James... you deserved it to start first time 👍
Clever, get the misses to start it. If it starts the camera pans to a smiling you. If the valves smashed into the pistons the camera pans to her followed by a a tut, tut, tut. 😁
Panel wipe cleans header tanks out to like new status, just poor in and shake ive done loads on Peugeot and Citroen.
Great video, nice job. You've inspired me to do a few jobs on my motor. Cracking tip about the ratchet as well..... purchased 👍👍👍
Spark plugs - clean anything off with a brass brush, then heat up the electrodes until they glow red, hold them in a vice, they grt damn hot. If they smoke, theres something on them. That exhaust sounds amazing! Great job getting the car back together dude!
Started straight off, nice job. Enjoyed this mini series
The fear/nervousness you get before starting a car up after major work never goes away. However many you do. I've even seen experienced blokes like Eric O bricking it before turning the key. 😂
Keep up the good work mate.
Good that guy. Main Street Autos?
Excellent job, I always get nervous after doing work to my car, glad it’s not just me 👍
clean your expansion bottle with rice or beads and white spirit give a good shake and good wash out after all gunk gone works wonders
Whatever colour coolant was in the mini before it ate your coolant jacket away, put the opposite colour in!
A handful of small stones with the degreaser and a good shake should get the majority of the rest of the crap out of the over flow bottle matey
Sounds good.. but there is definately a worn/bad bearing noise on one of the pulleys... that's what the high pitch noise you can hear at 18:20
Treat yourself to a funnel, good video.
Who buys funnels now days 😂
Av got them for water and oil changes, he'll of a lot less ball ache trying not to spill fluids but that could just be a personal preference thing :-)
@@wenstafarni people who don't want to risk damaging electrical components by spilling water or oil onto them.
Its a fucking joke rhys. Im pointing out many don't when it saves time and coolant etc, me being one who don't 😣
I always use funnels, much less mess that way
I would leave the plugs out, pull the fuel injection fuse, and crank the engine over to get the oil circulating to the top of the engine prior to 1st start up.
Well done mate. Thoroughly enjoyed watching this one. So glad it fired first time
Well done James. The 36mm socket you have is probably for the Mondeo it has the same canister type oil filter. Are you back working on the Mondeo soon??
Jazzyjay 7000 I think you’re correct!
Hi James, that does sound sweet, you have done awesome with this one,i couldn't do this kind of work myself.
Well done James, sounds, and looks a lot better.
Little tip, I used a packet of the popcorn you microwave to clean out the expansion bottle. The stuff is like ball bearings and was all I had at the time. Worked brilliantly and the expansion bottle came up like new...
Liked the bit about your mam buying your pants.... haha.
Or rice
Good job! Enjoyed the series and has shown these minis are fairly easy to work on hopefully will give others confidence to tackle things like this themselves 👍🏻
Awesome job mate love that exhaust purr!!! Loved this mini series. Thanks for the entertainment now.
Mini series almost complete, now back to your mondeo and re-painting those wheels!
Should always do those type of filters first before you drain the oil because it dumps its contents in the sump when you undo it.
Well done with the head gasket + headwork! Done the exact same on my 14 16v corsa b it started the same as the mini did, i was prepared for a fight to get it started but it fired up straight away 😈😈 Keep up the good work!

Got a set of 3 ratchets for 29 quid Draper expert
Just a tip Turn engine over before starting , till oil light goes out to get pressure up after a oil change to late now but tip for future
Out of curiosity, How do you do that on BMW E90 diesel?
Well done James sounds sweet and throaty you should be really happy with the outcome, enjoyed the series well worth your effort.
Great vid! Keep them coming. Interesting... no clutch pedal starter safety switch.
Well done 👍🏻 Great video fix on the mini James 😁 Love your fixing videos as there so honest!! Stevie 😎
Hard work payed off! Good job
Good effort bringing the Mini back from the dead. Imagine how much that fault-finding & fixing would’ve cost at a garage 😳
Since you done all this work you could have also removed the sump and given it a good clean.
