2021 Trek Rail Review - A Mighty Performer

  • Trek Rail is one of, it not the best handling all round electric mountain bike out there right now. Whilst its not got all the features and integration of some of its competitors, it more than makes up for that in the way it rides. Original bike was the Trek Rail 5 and I had a few parts already to upgrade the bike.

Rail is a great bike, in a world of increasing prices Trek still list the Rail 7 at £5500 / $6499, which looks like a great buy - and one that can be upgraded as you need to.

My experience has been that the trek rail is a train wreck. It makes fantastic first impressions but for medium to long term owners it has a laundry list of issues. Poor battery mount that is simply due to very crap engineering, a weak frame destroying aluminium bolt on the lower shock mount and paint that scratches if you look at it are just some of the failings. Trek's non emtb bikes are great. I agree that it "looks" like a great buy, has good specs, good value and rides well. But my sympathies to anyone who buys one. For their emtb bikes treks marketing is much better than their product.

@@Kevin_Aus I agree with you. We bought my wife a Rail 7 in 2020. In the 1200 miles she has ridden it the rear axle came loose a few times. The motor mount bolts all came loose. One of the bash guard bolts fell out. Most of the small screws around the battery area came loose. One of the chain guide bolts fell out first ride. The chain broke second ride. The stock tires are laggy and noisy on pavement and didn't work well on dirt. I wish someone would make a key bypass too. It's annoying.
But..once things are tightened and tires are changed the bike works really good. It just requires more attention. She loves the stability and how it handles.
In comparison I bought a Levo for myself a couple of months later. After 1300 much harder miles my handgrips are worn out. That's it.

Certainly can perform above my skill level at 60yo, but having ridden bikes for 50 years, I can't remember being this thrilled since our shared, fully knitted out 1971 Dragster, with horn, blinkers, lights, etc

Really enjoying this Trek 'long-term' ride report. LOVE the slo-mo suspension travel shots @2:46. I didn't miss at all the cliche music overlay riding footage. Your smooth voice and content discussing upgrades and competitive options were so much more helpful! As a buyer on the fence planning my purchase, all such comparo info helps. [NOTE to mfgr: I do wish Bosch would improve its monochrome Intuvia display with a battery percentage and leave it at that. Ebike displays trying to compete with celphone tech is a losing battle - the phones will always be ahead! And bright colour displays with unnecessary complexity we don't really need, do we? I want to *ride* the ebike-not *read* it! Happy trails, Rob~~~

Love my Rail 7 Rob. I find the key useful to stop the theft of my bike. If you don’t have both the key and the battery then the bike is useless. I get home, remove the battery and charge it inside. I also store the key separate from the battery and bike. I am your height 6 foot 2 and went for the large size. The upgrade to 170mm spring on the Yari has made the ride so much sweeter. Also found someone who upgraded their Rail 9 to a coil and bought their rear shock. The ride is now sweet as and I still have the upgrade to the Lyric damper to go for just a few hundred bucks. Thanks so much Rob for sharing your Rail upgrades with us.

Keep the key, put it on your car key ring simple, i hate messing with and trying to find Allen keys, and also if you lock your bike somewhere i want that battery locked with a key lock, i wouldn't want to come back and find the £800-£1200 battery is missing, also a lock weight verses Allen bolt isn't going to be much difference anyway as it still needs the retaining internal bracket both ends to hold the battery in place, and i like to take my battery indoors to charge in the warmth of a house, and one turn of a key is far easier then hunting for a Allen key then having to turn and turn it several times to get the battery out and trying to align the bolt thread back in when you want to put the battery back in, no thanks, love your review though otherwise great !

After getting my Rail 7 about 9mths ago, I changed to a custom mullet wheelset (Hope Pro4 with DT Swiss EX511), with 2.5" Maxxis Aggressor tyres. Made the bike feel more playful and "flickable" around the corners. Can't say I've noticed any increase of pedal strike. Also switched out the rear shock to a DVO Jade X coil. Much tastier! My previous bike was a Trek LT7 with the Purion controller. New bike came with the Kiox controller and I personally think it's a much better system. Having it mounted on the top tube behind the headset is much better. Always felt the bar mount was too vulnerable to damage. Overall, a really fun bike to ride.

Love my Rail 9.7 and done around 2000 miles on it now but totally agree about the RIB system. Took mine to my bike shop which is 40 mins drive and forgot the key. Main issue I have had is power going on and off usually when going through the full travel. LBS said it might be that the bottom plastic end cap for the battery has worn down a couple of mm from mud ingress. Waiting for a new cap and we’ll see. If so it’s a £9 part that’s easy to replace so no big deal but certainly worth checking before messing with aligning the brackets. It would be great if Trek released a bracket where you can use an Allen key, they released the bracket to connect the 2 end assemblies and stop battery rattle after the I got mine.

Rob, great review and confirms my choice of a Rail 9.7 last year. I had nothing to compare it to and test rides were few and far between. I bored myself (nearly) to death with reviews and bought mine from Rutland. I bought my partner a Cube Stereo on the basis that she tended already to get off and push. Her Stereo is way heavier than mine to heft around which both being carbon seems odd. Both bikes were available at the time and decent prices (£4,500 and £4,000 respectively). They suit us fine overall but the rear mech pivot is, frankly, disgraceful being sloppy out of the box. Mine recently dropped a jockey wheel suffering damage to the mech and not easy to replace. Tip: check the jockey wheel axles because despite locktite they can come undone. I got the world’s last new mech on line but cobbled the old one together in the meantime. I quite like the battery arrangement and only having one bike the key isn’t an issue. On the negative side to swap a battery isn’t easy. The motor was noisy on the Trek initially but quietened down after around 50km. The Cube was quieter despite the same Bosch motor. Both rattle on bumpy downhills.
Overall, great bike and not looking to change much.

Hi Rob, for somebody fairly new to trail riding with a light sprinkling of downhill, I'm finding my Trek Marlin 5 very limited at trail centers such as BikeGlenlivet. Would the rail 5 be a good starter E-MTB as a platform for later upgrades as my skills increase? Is there any difference between the 5 and 7 in terms of frame or is it just front/rear shocks among a few other luxuries?

Half the price of the xt stuff and lasts 3 times longer. Rib battery system is a nightmare, even with two very tight security velcro straps on frame to keep it from disconnecting and shorting the power. With battery alignment bracket plate and two very tight velcro straps, doesn’t cut out, but still rattles more than I care for in the rough at least. Lower shock pivot bearings wear fast too due to excessive vertical load on tiny bearings that see very little rotation. Drive side main pivot and ABP bearing roasted after a season as well, despite regular cleaning and no wet riding. Despite all of this, the bike does ride and handle great on most everything even though the 50 lb heft (carbon 9.7). Please Trek, get rid of the RIB system since more problems than it is worth

Hey Rob Rides Emtb! Bosch kept the controller on top of the handlebar even though it's the most vulnerable position it could be in! Shimano put the shifter under the bar in the late 80s to protect them from crash damages! Bosch is not a right to repair friendly company at all because they won't sell internal motor parts to the aftermarket rebuilding shops or the public! They want worn motors to be tossed into landfills because they make more selling new motors! Maybe they just want more broken controllers so they sell more replacements! Ride ride ride!

I actually really like that the battery is easily removable, it's a feature you don't think about until you don't have it. Want to lift the bike onto the roof of a car or somewhere high? Remove battery to shed a good deal of weight. Want to store the bike in a cold garage during the winter? Or ride during the winter? Remove the battery and charge it inside in a warm environment like you should. Want to wash the bike down with a hose? Why not remove the battery first, just to be on the safe side. Want to do super long rides in the mountains? Stick an extra battery in your backpack and easily slot it in. Or maybe do loops in turbo mode and leave a fresh battery at the parking lot? I've seen a lot of bikes go the route of permanent down-tube battery but I'll stick with an easily removable battery.

Can you make a video for different trek rail sizes and models on what rear shocks upgrades that would fit on those bikes? there's loads of questions unanswered going like: if RS super deluxe ultimate would fit on trek rail 5, 7 or 9, medium or large or would fox float x, x2 and dhx2 does as well? etc. Thanks!

Key is no problem. I keep one on my normal key ring, one in my riding bag and one in the car. I even ordered one online (from the key number) and collected it when I was the other side of the country. I was super cheap for a spar too.

The Carbon wheels are lighter but stiffer than the aluminum ones. Don’t you get tired sooner from the pressure in you arms? Also, Fox has released the replacement of the DPX2, the Fox Float X, a bit larger than the Dpx2, and it is going to be common shock to a lot of 2022 bikes(Yeti 160E, Haibike AllMtn 10 etc)

I'd like the battery key to integrate an ignition switch position, or something that electrically locks the crank/motor so it can't be pedalled away. Number of times i've stopped at those trail cafes and everyone stood in the queue nervously glancing at their unlocked bikes. I've seen people stood in the queue clutching their bikes in fear.

I have a 230x60 shock on my rail, adding about 6mm of rear travel. It's basically unnoticeable in both the positives and negatives you described in the review when you were talking about your dpx2. I guess a 62.5 stroke might just be too big for the rail!

    • @RobRidesEMTB
      @RobRidesEMTB  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah it’s not a biggie, just something to be aware of. Bike tends to sit and ride a little further into it’s travel with longer stroke shocks.

Purion is a bit of a nightmare with Shimano's latest brakes with the extra brace back to the bars, made placement rubbish. I upgraded my (best buy!) Rail 7 to Kiox. The controller isn't a patch on other system manufacturers solutions but I'm happy overall with the upgrade.

Interesting about putting more travel on the bike 170 fork 162 rear. You say you prefer 160 fork and the rear 160 unbalanced the bike.
On your new Rail you have gone 170 fork and around 165 on the rear?
How does it work on the new rail then?

Hi Rob I would be interested in hearing a longer term review of a Rail 7, as standard, in winter wet conditions as we have here in the Lake District more often then we would like.
Also, most reviewers when they review bikes want to change tyres, suspension, brakes, wheels, blah blah blah but I can't help wondering what's in the manufacturer's minds when they set up their bikes. Are they just trying to reach price points or are they really interested in the performance of the bikes in each price range? Most of us just ride the standard bikes and only change things when the need arises.
I enjoy your reviews especially when you put standard bikes head-to-head such as the hill climb review.
    Thank you.
    Stuart

Hey rob like your content and the way you perform 🙂. I’m in the market in getting my first e bike and I’m going with specialized the levo comp 2021 with the shimano drive train. What are your thoughts? Should I wait for the 2022 version since I would like to have the 2.2 brose motor and the double lip to keep the charging port dry.

    • @grandviewguy18
      @grandviewguy18 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm between a Rail 7 and Levo Comp 2022. I am trying to justify the $1000 more price of the Levo. I'd say it's in the better suspension of the Levo. The SLX seemed nice on my test ride of the 2021...I'd wanna switch to GX AXS later. But I've decided if Levo I'll wait for 2022 for the new motor and new TCU. If Rail I'll maybe upgrade to ZEB fork later on and just ride it until the thing dies haha. My trails here in Midwest, USA aren't gnarly really.

  • @jimji2774

Test rode the 9.7 and aesthetically it just makes the "aluminium "said in English accent" frame model look kind of bad. The carbon while expensive is just so much more attractive to my eyes. Also tested it back to back against a Levo with the Brose and it just seemed to have another level of assist than the Levo. Since I am coming off an SL and wanting more oomf that was more appealing to me. Also the Brose has had more reliability issues I hear. Wish I could take them both out to the trails to test but thats not possible. Lucky to get any good bike in the right size right now. The 9.7 with carbon frame is $7550 USD now in 2022.

nice review, shame you spent loads to get it upto scratch...
i love trek bikes - got my first mtb back in 1991 which was a trek 950 :)
but i looked at the powerfly 4 back in february (£3350) and walked away underwhelmed... components, wheels, forks etc were shockingly bad and i wondered if I'd be nable to afford a half decent one... then looked online and bout a canyon Neuron:ON 8 for 4 grand...and it's been flawless in the 1400 miles I've covered since March...no chains stretch or anything, and not upgraded anything - except for going tubeless...
the only downside is the matt paintwork - chips far too easily...
