    Been riding my 2020 Rail 7 for almost a year now, absolutely a great purchase! Been riding much much more than I was on my old analog Specialized Epic, great bike in its day. I’m not a technical geek when it comes to parts, but the stock Rail 7 has gotten me through all types of trails here in the front range of the Rockies in Colorado. The Rail 7 takes all the terrain I can find and just chews it up under any condition. Since LBS sells Trek, its been great having them right in town in case something goes wrong (had a big crash in first month so went back to them a few times). Bottom line it, the Rail 7 has got me riding longer, more times and having just a ton more fun. Can’t recommend it enough! Thanks for your content Rob!

    Great review Rob. I have a Trek Rail 7 and love it. I think your missing the point on the key. The key is not there to protect the battery, it’s there to protect the bike from theft. If you remove the battery from the bike then it is useless to anyone who steals it because even if they buy another battery they can’t install it without the key that you still have.

    Great video Rob. I’ve put 80 miles on my new 9.7 and Love it! It has the Kiox display which is a huge upgrade over the bar mount unit. It’s a super nice and full blown computer with some great features. I especially like the Power and Cadence display as it really helps you to stay in the power band. Regarding the battery. The dealer where I purchased has had a few reports of battery’s flying off the bike on rough terrain. I’ve just put an enduro spares strap on the top end to keep it secure. I love the brakes as well...was ready to upgrade before really checking them out, but now completely happy with the 6120’s bombing steep runs and at 90kg.

    I have a brand new 2021 trek rail 5 sitting in my living room, because of the weather it’s been sitting for 3 weeks have not even rode in trails yet. But I did replace the fork with a SR Suntour Durolux rc2 170 mm. I’m on a budget and found one new for half price on pink bike. I did put carbon bars on and also minion 2.4. In USA we’re getting hammered with bad weather in northeast so it still might be another 3weeks before I can ride. This is longest I’ve ever been off my bike. Watching your videos are good but definitely not replacing actually riding. Yes the keys do SUCK but the display for me is not too bad.

    Started on a Powerfly, traded it for an Intense Tazer and then bought a Rail 7 in Jan 2020. I've put 1500 miles on the Rail and its hands down the funnest bike I've ever owned. Only mods are a Super Deluxe on the rear, upgraded fork internals to a Lyrik Ultimate and E13 carbon wheels/Maxxis tires. Its a dialed ride now. If Bosch improves the Purion POS, the bike would be perfect. Nice review Rob.

    Nice one Rob, looks decent mate.
    I picked up my Rail 9 just before Christmas, the first e-bike I've owned and I must say I'm really chuffed with it. (Especially since Trek raised the price from £5700 to £6300 a couple of weeks after I bought it!)
    The only drama I've had is with the Trek own brand dropper post, which has started to stick. I'm 6'8'' and weigh about 19st... I'm not sure whether thats had any effect!? But it's going back for it's initial check up service in the next couple of weeks so I'll get the shop to sort it.
    The key thing doesnt bother me too much, but I get where you're coming from, certainly when putting the battery back in - Why can't it have a click/locking mechanism when it's returned?
    I have the Bosch eBike Connect app... and it's... pretty average. Certainly compared to the offerings I've seen from Shimano - It would be nice to have some more options within it.
    The Rail 9 came with the Kiox display, which is neatly placed behind the stem on the top tube... I just couldnt face the Purion 🤢. Although it's not all that secure, so I stole one of my daughters hairbands and fashioned it into a lanyard - I've heard horror stories of them flying off and disappearing into the undergrowth...
    Other than that, it's all good 🙌 Just waiting for lockdown to be lifted so I can take it to some more interesting places.
    Take care and stay safe.
    Tom.

    Great review as usual Rob. When I lock my bike to a railing outside the cafe we often stop at on a ride I’m glad the £1000 battery is also locked. As for the Purion display, love it, best display/controller on the market, robust, ergonomic and 80s chic.

      Hi John, do you think in this situation an Allen key hidden in rear axle would suffice? Many other brands do these kind of solutions and in my opinion are much better than a car style key. I doubt an opportunist thief would work out how to 1 - find the Allen key 2 - know how to release the battery. Unless they are a serial battery thief!

    • @johnwarner129
      @johnwarner129 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hex key better than nothing for sure but still prefer a proper key.

      @@RobRidesEMTB So a potential thief who watches your channel would know exactly where the allen key is hidden and will come to steal your battery with zero tools needed - how thoughtful. As to who would steal a battery, I always take my (Trek) battery upstairs (I live in an apartment block where each apartment has a locked storage area in the basement where I keeo my bike - it's alarmed foR anyone that may know me!!), as a deterent, so that if someone steals the bike he'll be without a battery ... until our friend who watched your channel and managed to get his filthy hands on one, comes to the "rescue". Still think the key is too much trouble to remove a Trek battery - you should try a Specialized or a Focus 😂😂

    Hi Rob, I bought the same bike but in green, upgraded the brakes to XT and the same drivetrain as yourself, changed some other components like the grips bars and the dropper lever, I did notice mud building up on your battery, mine did the same on a slop fest, mud and water got to the battery terminals and the battery shutdown, I have since put a rubber seal top and bottom of the length of the battery and no more mud or water gets in to the battery compartment, and what I thought was cable slap coming from the cables under the battery was the battery knocking against the locking mech. top video BTW

    I love my rail, the battery noise is easy to fix, just tighten those bolts screws according to recommended specs, i learned a lot from trek rail fb group page, the key thing is just getting use to it, i love that you can take battery indoors and access is easy, many fellow rail riders agree that this model is the e-slash version, the motor is smooth powerful, you actually dont need an app, it just adds to the clutter, the different modes are well thought of, its battery efficient and noise is a lot quieter relative to other motors, its bosch motor its realiable, brose breaks easily its light because its full of plastic parts inside

  • @akabukiman
    @akabukiman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You're so damn right again with the key thing. The fact that you need the key to put it back in, is what frustrates me most. I took apart the whole mechanism twice. Not a chance. With the old Gen 3 at least this was possible.
    Don't know if an allen key's the right idea, though. But why don't just add a button in addition to the key, so that you don't have to lock it, but you can if your neighborhood suggests.
    Marzocchi Bomber CR from Ebay is going to arrive tomorrow. I'll let you know if the 62.5 mm (65 with spacer) fits. Honesty, I have my doubts 😅.

    I’ve got a Rail and wouldn’t want to lose the battery lock. The battery is worth about a grand and thieves will get a lot more savvy to that as ebikes get more popular. Thieves are very smart, the lock that holds the battery is useless. A thief could probably pick the lock in seconds. Watch the Chanel the lock picking lawyer and see what I mean. You know what the bike companies could do is put a way you can punch in a code on battery and on bike and if code doesn’t not match bike will not work.

I really do not understand why everyone wants integrated battery. Only bike I would consider at the moment would be the Lapierre GLP2 since it has the battery at the right place and a Bosch motor but as you mentioned the integration is truly terrible. Even my 2014 Haibike Xduro Nduro 9.0 has a better remote!! And totally agree with key issues. I really hope the manufacturers are listening to all TH-cam e bike channels! Maybe have the option to ditch the keys when ordering. I myself personally like the key system. Yes it is a pain and yes the keys do get stuck often, but that area where you need the keys to get the battery back in is a good theft deterrent. If you say did your due diligence and removed the battery ahead of time and said thief takes it he'll be pretty pissed if he cant get a new battery in...im sure he would eventually find a way though.

    Rob, how much does the 170mm fork change the reach number? I’m 6’1” and always in between Large and XL sizes. I’d like to run a 170mm fork but afraid it would shrink the reach too small on the Large and push the wheelbase too far on the XL. Any thoughts and insights would be appreciated. Thanks!! Great video

    The newer trek rail 9.7 and above seem to have fixed the ugly control center on the bars and moved it to the frame. Is that the fix you were looking for? Still not as clean as the specialized but I think it’s better then what’s on your bike. Maybe you can upgrade to that?

    @Rob Rides EMTB
    Love the channel!! I'm stuck on my Bike decision, I am torn between a Levo comp and a Rail 9!!
    I'm a light rider and ride fairly aggressive, I will hit decent size jumps, most of my riding will be hard big rocks on dart Moor, but as I'm fit I enjoy riding quick up as well as down and enjoy getting to the top of the hill first.
    I've ridden both styles of the types of suspension before and enjoy how they feel, I have owned 5 trek bikes previously with last being a slash so I'm familiar with the good bad and ugly with the brand and local dealer.
    The Rail is slightly slacker so has a slight edge on appeal there and has a Bosch motor, but the levo I know my warranty issues are going to be dealt with FAST and the trek I will probably have a 14day wait at least. And I know with regular hard riding there will be warranty issues at some point even with good maintenance.
    Would love to hear your opinion considering you have ridden both bikes?
    Thanks Nath

      I have Cube stereo hybrid 140 Tm and it has same thing that you need a key to remove or to put battery back to bike. I think its solid mechanism so battery cant fall off while you are riding (Cube has different battery integration than Trek) but that key gets stuck often which is anoying. So I think there is pros and cons.

      I've just bought a trek powerfly 9.7 2019 same design. After charging indoors, I left the battery hanging in the frame while I went back to find the key and the battery fell out chipping the paintwork next to the 'K' on Trek. Two big lumps missing. Furious. Guted. Only had it a week. Dont risk it kids!

      I have a Rail and love it. Where I live I could leave my wallet on the seat and it probably wouldn’t get stolen but you know what, I still like the idea of having a locking battery. Petty crime was more of an issue in the UK. We went on holiday once and came back to find our hanging baskets stolen. It won’t be long before the thieves get wise to that unsecured easy picking in the down tube. I often have the bikes on the rack when nipping in the store to get food or pay for fuel. Wouldn’t take many seconds to pop off an unlocked battery. Sad times we live in. Lock it or risk loosing it.

    Hi Rob, I own a Rail 9.8xt but I recently had an issue where my fork got damaged. It's covered by insurance but you cannot buy a Zeb Select+ (especially with the emtb crown) off the shelf, it only comes with a complete bike. My local bike shop spoke to the Rockshox rep who recommended the budget ebike ZEB as a replacement. This has the EMTB crown but much more basic dampers and no compression adjustment. However the rep says it's stiffer than the ultimate Zeb. Do you agree or would you recommend the ZEB Ultimate for an ebike? Any advice would be much appreciated. Cheers.

    • @RobRidesEMTB

    Not sure how a small key is any less convenient than any other tool. Plenty of ways to stow it and while it can be fiddly it protects from theft; yes some of us have to chain bikes up in places where they nick your saddle, so a £900 battery would be gone in 60seconds!
    Totally agree it’s a backward step needing the key to put it back in though, my old Powerfly 5 lets you snap it back without the key.
    I find the spec on my 2021 Rail7 pretty spot on and it has XT and Shimano brakes plus a Yari fork which is closer to the Lyric in feel so worth the modest extra cost over the 5. The key issue is getting hold of one as in the U.K. they are sold out for most of 2021. Also, quality seems down on my previous Treks, I think demand is causing build standards to slip, mine came with speed sensor faults causing the motor to cut in and out and was at the dealers three weeks awaiting a part.
    Tyres are way to wide for me and cause handling/speed issues, so swapped to a 2.35 Rock Razor on the back to speed it up. I’ll look at a narrower faster front tyre when the winter passes as for now that extra girth is pretty useful in the British mudfest.

    Hi Rob, just a q on the battery fitment. If the battery is locked in place and you push on the battery cover up top, there seems to be a 2mm gap (one can still press it in further) but at the bottem it sits flush. Is yours like this too? And also, the gap between the frame and battery, does water and dirt go inside there?
    Thanks
