    That maneuver of the cube to save Voyager was actually pretty clever and fast thinking. Few other species would have done that, at least not after such short consideration, showing the Borg do not care for a single ship of their own at all when sacrificing it means accomplishing a goal. Ice cold.

      Also what's one cube when they can easily assimilate cultures quickly enough to rebuild the missing population of that cube fairly quickly. What other "species" can drum up 4 million new "soldiers" in a day or two?

    • @rasikkom9605
      @rasikkom9605 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Seeing the Borg move their cube to protect a Federation starship was just an OMG moment when I first saw it. Also loved seeing the cube rotate and fire on all sides.

      Rotating so that fresh weapons and shields would face the enemy. Simply ramming the enemy. Great tactics for Borg cubes.
      Too bad they never used them when attacking Earth, when confronted by that one annoying starship that kept blocking their path.

    Voyager really took off after these episodes with the Borg and the addition of Jerri Ryan as 7 of 9. Janeway said they would die trying to fight the Borg, but the Borg did not hesitate to sacrifice an cube of thousands to save Voyager and defeat Species 8472. Janeway found a way to unite the Borg and Starfleet at least for a short time. Then she annihilated them at the end of the series. Good stuff.

    • @supersaiyaman11589
      @supersaiyaman11589 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      they only sacrificed the Borg cube because they had interest in wanting to defeat species 8472. don't forget it was them that started the war with species 8472 by invading their space.so looking back species 8472 had every right to want the Borg gone and janeway should have let the Borg die. she would have done countless species right if she did.

    • @Koowluh
      @Koowluh 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@supersaiyaman11589 And then what? Species 8472 weren't exactly the cozy neighbour type. They would have gone on a rampage through our galaxy, one episode actually focusses on them recreating Federation Headquarters to stage a possible attack. They were xenophobic up to the point of wiping anything different than them out. It was that they settled their differences at the end of the episode, else the Milky way galaxy would have been sterilized by Species 8472.

      Yep. I still contend, to this day, that if the Borg had been in their original state as we saw them in Q Who and Best of Both Worlds, Species 8472 would never have stood a chance. But because they were _too_ powerful, and the writers had basically written themselves into a corner, they nerfed the Borg. This is why adapting no longer granted _immunity_ in Voyager, but extreme levels of mitigation (the episode that had the first appearance Borg Queen on Voyager).
      This was still hella cool, as we never would have thought that the Borg and Starfleet could be allies.

      But logicly you know each human has its own diffirent views, and therefor ALOT would disagree with your statement. Since they may like other shows alot more. Also when it was made has a huge impact aswell. Comparing a show from 1950's vs a 2020's show is no contest at all if you judge by looks alone. Technolgy used is just way to good.
      I mean Sci Fi alone is a VERY broad term my friend ... there is tons of sci fi not even having to do with space lol.

    • @rwalper
      @rwalper 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      The only reason the ramming was effective here is because it took place at warp speed. The collapsing warp fields and resulting monstrous forces as both ship masses were torn out of their respectuve subspace fields and back into normal space is what destroyed both vessels. Strong enough to kill a Borg cube and bioship, but not exactly a viable tactic since it is dependent upon the bioships being in close enough proximity to the Borg vessels while at warp.

      Struck me as somewhat obvious the Borg did not want Voyager crossing their terroritory quickly. They were forced into a stalemate because of Janeway's threat to destroy the vital information they needed, but as seen here, the Borg were quite intent on trying to get their hands on the nanoprobes as soon as they could get/trick Voyager to hand them over.

    • @mnomadvfx

      Very likely.
      The Borg called them the apex of biologically based technology, given their precise control of singularities, their insane weapons capable of planetary destruction in array form and ability to actually shape shift with technology.....
      Well let's just say that transwarp sounds like childs play to them.
      Besides the Borg transwarp is not true transwarp anyway - it's badly named given the earlier Voyager episode detailing what transwarp really means.
      Their transwarp is more like Quantum Slipstream travel which relies heavily on the deflector, something Seven needed to create the singularity that brought Voyager to fluidic space - hence in my mind that 8472 have the tools for 'transwarp' already.

    I always wondered: In canon, where did the idea to ram the 8472 ship come from? Was it the hive, an order from the Queen, or was it even 7 of 9 (who seems to be operating with a lot more independence than a regular drone,). I also wondered: Did the Borg ever use this tactic to kill other 8472 ships , and protect any other high value targets, in canon? It's inefficient, and I doubt it would be a war winning tactic, but it might well slow down their advance - given that up until this scene 8472 have believed that the Borg simply can't touch them _at_ _all_ . Dramatically I'd find that more pleasing, since a war with one side losing badly is plausible, but a war where one side (who are accomplished strategists and fighters in their way) never even manages to bloody the other... that's just a bit hard to swallow.

      @janglestick 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      the rotation does seem silly, unless there's some reason that it might take less energy to put the inevitable slight turning of the ship in a spin, rather than keep it pointed forward. But the cube obviously isnt really shaped to take advantage of the stability of rotation. I suspect it just looked a bit silly and like a cut-out or matting to have a static cube flying around. This way we get to see more of the doodads.

    • @NATIK001
      @NATIK001 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Borg ships aren't built like Federation ships. They don't have a front or rear like that, which must mean that their warp drives can form and shape their warp bubbles in any direction 360 degrees around the ship. Similarly their sublight engines can provide thrust in all directions too.
      It's not unreasonable that a warp drive of such capability could adjust its warp bubble on the fly to allow the ship to spin using navigation thrusters/impulse engines while at warp and maintaining their heading in warp. All it would take is to continually and exactly rotate their warp field counter to their ship's rotation to maintain a constant warp heading regardless of the ship's rotation. A Federation ship could never perform this feat, but a Borg Cube could do it provided it could perform the necessary calculations and adjustments to the warp field fast enough.
      I wager the reason we don't usually see Borg Cubes spinning like this is that it's rarely necessary and takes a huge amount of computational power to do, the Borg do not like to spend resources on anything which isn't strictly necessary. However in the rare case where they are fighting superior enemies it makes sense they are willing to expend those extra resources to stave off defeat, just like the ended up ramming the bioship to save something more valuable than the Cube.
      The Cube's shape is irrelevant in space, it doesn't cause drag to spin, and spinning allows it to rotate through firing arcs and rotate shield facings much more rapidly than they could divert power to those weapon and shield arrays. Spinning to rotate firing arcs is a brilliant move when facing a foe where every bit of firepower matters and could mean the difference between victory and defeat.
      I think this is one of the more brilliant things done by the Voyager showrunners. They are often ragged on for what they did to the Borg and other cases of bad writing, however I believe that in this case they correctly recognized that the Borg would be uniquely capable of this maneuver and I think it's great that they put it in there.
