Three days ago, I called my husband into the kitchen to see what was wrong with my food processor because I couldn’t get it to come on. He flipped the lid around, looked at me like he thought I was senile, and left the room. I am beyond glad to see that you did the exact same thing. I showed this to my husband and he said, “Okay, it’s not just you.” Vindicated!
My family has been making these for at least 50 or 60 years, and started making them as Bourbon balls. We now make them with a little bit of everything (anything from bourbon, rum, brandy, etc.) I also add a bit of good quality vanilla to mine (it brings out the chocolate taste a little more) and have made an Alcohol free version using good quality rum extract. They are also kicked up a notch by adding in good quality almond extract. :) Also, the longer you let them stay in a container, the stronger they get. 😋
what are the measurements when you make the alcohol free version? is it just rum extract and water? just curious, i've had rum balls before and like the taste, but i'm not the hugest fan of alcohol and i'd like minors to be able to eat my holiday snacks as well as adults.
@@icefox94 I personally use an entire 2oz bottle of rum extract. I pour it into a 1/3 cup measuring cup, add a teaspoon of vanilla, and fill up the measuring cup the rest of the way with water. I like them Strong. If you want them weaker, fill a 1/3 cup measuring cup with half water and half rum extract. :)
Thank you! I had lost all my mother's old and most favorite recipes. She compiled all of them together on two books - one for my sister, and one for me, and that's been over 25 years ago...She had found (somewhere?) 2 blank special blank books for just this urpose, that had "Family recipes on the front. She spent hours writing them all down for us and mine was lost somewhere along the way in the shuffle of our moving a couple of times ..But she gave it to me again one Christmas as I wanted to make small treats for my husband's coworkers He was a city transit bus driver for 12+ years.I found an assortment of Christmas themed design coffee mugs and decided to make small cellophane wrapped packets of my mother's rum balls for each of them.It was a nice and pretty easy gift idea..I made the rumballs just like you did here, and like you,I got just a tiny bit "heavy handed" with the 151 Bacardi! The irony was that they smelled pretty strong just from the get go,but I really got a laugh when he came home that night after handing them out to everyone...because his supervisor (a great guy btw!) refused to allow any of the drivers to eat them that were going on shift! That's how and when I realized just HOW strong they probably are! But everyone loved them and appreciated the personal gifts! Thanks ,and I had lost my recipe again and you helped me with wanting to make more this Christmas!
VERY easy instructions and thanks for posting! Your smile is infectious!! EVERY TIME you smile, find myself smiling with you!!!!! We need more smiles in the world!!!
These are made in my family for decades. I use graham crackers with or without cinnamon, add some coffee to enhance chocolate flavor, melted dark chocolate ( Lindt or Dove , or any fancy European chocolate) , and roasted hazelnuts instead of pecans. Lots of rum !!! Coconut 🥥 is also great to enhance nut flavor with Malibu rum .
Very good recipe mine uses condensed milk and to be refrigerated 24-72 hrs ahead. I’ve made them for years and years and ship half to my married grandson across the miles always at Christmas time. Love your recipes and I to love watching Mary.
I make them with the vanilla cream filled wafers (they look like the inside of a coffee crisp). 2 packs, 2 heaping tablespoons of cocoa and 1/4 cup of dark rum. Easy peasy!
I love watching him, he's so cute and fun, but most of all skilled and knowledgable. This video did not disappoint. Thanks for lightening a pressure filled day. ❤
OMG! My dad used to make these every year when I was a kid I can still see him making them. He didn’t have the benefit of a food processor… LOL I may just have to give this recipe a shot.
At work one year we started Black Friday with some spiked Hot Chocolate, followed by some very strong rum balls. It was the most enjoyable Black Friday I'd ever experienced, and I've worked them for 20 years. lol.
I'm always so happy to see a new recipe from you. Your videos are a delight to watch and your recipes turn out so pretty and delicious! Thank you for sharing with us.
I love your videos! Your so talented and you inspire me as a long time baker. I just watched a boring video (joy of baking) that left no joy in me whatsoever. They should hire you to do those videos. Your a breath of fresh air and you make me smile. I would love to meet your husband and kids. Maybe do a family video in the future?
you can also do this with those layered wafer cookies (whatever flavour you like), icing and all, icing sugar, bit of cocoa powder, and hard alcohol of your choice. i don't recommend using liquors as they're too sweet. i just eyeball all the measurements and taste until i'm happy with flavour and texture. raspberry vodka with extra chocolate is really nice. whiskey with a touch of instant coffee. whatever you like
I don't have a processor, so I just put the nillas in a large freezer bag and roll them to crumbs. Very popular. Also, I use liquers like Amaretto, since rumballs smell too clinical to me. Great video!
Got to make the rum balls! "If they're a little dry, just add a little more liquid. Any one you want" as you're shaking the rum bottle! That made me laugh 😂 btw, I call them 'nilla wafers too.
Made them last night from my grandmothers recipe from the 60s. It called for 2 Tbsp. Corn syrup. Found some organic at Sprouts farmers market. Used Walnuts , Jameson's and vanilla extract.
In Germany they use left over cakes that they didn’t sell the day before, sometimes you find pieces of walnuts or fruit and the rum balls are the size of your fist. A perfect winter breakfast 😂
Vanilla wafers -- 'Nilla is just a brand name. They don't exist here in New Zealand, so I use something plain such as a tea or bran biscuit. I've read that rum balls get more intense if allowed to "ripen" for a few days. They are a favorite of mine too.
John, not only do you provide wonderful recipes, your delivery is fantastic. I absolutely love your personality and enjoy watching each video, and yes, even (or especially) the OOPS moments. I've never used confectioner's sugar in Rum Balls, just the honey and once or twice with cocoa powder. Anyway they look great. Have an Awesome weekend and Merry Christmas wishes to you and your family.
I love your channel. I am attempting baking following your guidance. The perfect pie crust recipe -it worked! Now I am going to attempt these rum balls. If it goes bad at least I have rum to drink
Rum balls are my all time favourite thing. Like, it was my pick me up when i was a kid (yes, you can have non-alcoholic ones as kid). i searched and searched for a good rum ball but couldn't find it and then BAAM! Your video!! i can finally make it! YES! ToT ♥ ♥ ♥
I used to buy rum balls that were out around Christmas but I think the company went out of business. They were so good. I tried my hand at making them and they were not that good. This recipe seems much better than the one I used.
OMG! All that I remember aboot Rum Balls is being disgusted by them, even as a young adult, but these were effing delicious! Yes, they will make an excellent crust for something too. This is a simple recipe with easily interchangeable ingrediants.
Hello😊 i totally loved watching this video .Y.our so entertaining ...i had a real laugh when you were adding the grog..so funny ...i would of done the same too ...love your sense of humour ..Thank you i will be making them soon...😊
Thank you so much I've been on your TH-cam page. And I enjoyed making this I just did it and hopefully my husband would like it for the holidays thank you again for sharing something easy and quick with the family. Truly this is not for children so remember to put your stuff out at a proper time
My mom has a giant measuring cup like the one you used. She uses it to mix together the liquids for her broth soups as well as pancake and waffle batters.
I love your TH-cam site I love your story what you wrote about yourself that is so appealing to me to be with your mother and learn from her I know you have good memories of her I hope she still with you I don't have mine anymore I'm 72 so I lost her about 12 years ago and I used to love to hear her in the kitchen that spoon knoking on the pots and pans when she was cooking the smell of all the marvelous things that she made I miss her tremendously
I love those. We usually make them with bourbon, but I saw a recipe for ginger snaps and spiced rum and now I want to those soon. Mine calls for corn syrup, but it looks like honey will hold them together just as well, so good to know. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
That's almost like "kartoshka," which I absolutely love. The rum balls I made required raisins and a chocolate rum ganache mixed into it which makes it more fatty. I'm gonna try this out and see if the texture is still as chewy
When I was a kid, a bunch of us skipped a lot of church services to go across the street to a Norwegian bakery with Rum balls the size of baseballs, rolled in chocolate sprinkles.. lots of rum. Lots.
I just love your channel! I just found you and for the first time tonight, I wrapped my cake pans with the wet paper towels and aluminum foil and they turned out PERFECT!!! 😍

Extracts are made with alcohol, so if you are an alcohol free person (or making these for someone who is) leave out the extracts.
@@SuzetteG316 you can get alcohol free extracts. They're often referred to as emulsions.

Rum, toasted pecans, and toasty John SECONDS into the video!?
My heart is full.
"nu uh, not in my house, not around my kids" LOL. How many of these did you have before filming?? Most hilarious video yet.
That was so funny to me!
You can use rum essence instead of normal rum
Lol, lol , lol

Mary Berry is royalty here in uk , she’s a legend 🇬🇧🇬🇧
This takes me back to my HS days. BF's mom used to make these but soaked them in rum for weeks. Needless to say, we were constantly sneaking them

I just made a double batch. The second batch I toasted coconut in place of the pecans and used coconut rum. Wow!
Wow Will have to try that!
You are so pleasant to watch. I used your banana cream pie recipe and got so many compliments. These rum balls looks delish
Oh my GOD! The rum balls are soooo good. Thank you John, for another great recipe.
1/3 cup of rum really means 1/2 cup boys and girls.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk 😂
I guess Im pretty randomly asking but do anybody know of a good place to stream new movies online ?
@Aarav Everett i would suggest flixzone. You can find it on google :)
I use 1 cup of burbon. I like 'em strong! 😆😆😆
Love the way you measured that rum.
OMG! My dad used to make these every year when I was a kid I can still see him making them. He didn’t have the benefit of a food processor… LOL I may just have to give this recipe a shot.
You have inspired me to make these.....My mother made them with a maraschino cherry inside. That fruit got very strong after awhile. Love your videos.
I'm just imaging how delicious these are and I'm totally drooling!
I literally burst into laughter when the food processor just started lol your face was priceless 😂 love all your recipes. I've made a lot already 🙂
I ate them as a child. Very fond memories.
At work one year we started Black Friday with some spiked Hot Chocolate, followed by some very strong rum balls. It was the most enjoyable Black Friday I'd ever experienced, and I've worked them for 20 years. lol.
In Australia we use arnotts arrowroot biscuits, bundaberg rum, sweetened condensed milk, cocoa powder and we roll them in coconut
We used Scotch finger....I still love sticking my finger in the tin to get that last little bit of condensed milk 😂
I absolutely love all your recipes. You've helped make my cooking more delicious. Thank you
I kinda lost it when you were fixing the food processor and it turned on :D
I was still laughing from the "...pinch of anger..." and then the food processor- hahaha
