  • The film follows the staff of the Army weekly magazine Yank, who are among the first American troops in Tokyo after Japan's surrender. They are given the difficult task of producing an issue of the magazine in three days. Short on ideas and having to meet the deadline, they enter Japan's black market and come across con artist Joe Butterfly. Butterfly shows them the high life, letting them live in a mansion complete with beautiful girls.Usage Public Domain

    Audie was one of the greatest men that ever lived, we're so fortunate he went into the movies after the war, and although many only knew him as the original Penguin, Burgess Merridith (Joe Butterfly) was one of Hollywood's busiest actors.

    *Audie Murphy (1925 - 1971) - THE most decorated U.S. solider in WWII...!* He rose from the rank of private to officer with multiple battlefield promotions and was awarded the Medal of Honor 2 weeks before his 20th birthday! His steely inner confidence was forged in the crucible of war! His soft Texas drawl and natural acting ability helped propel him to movie stardom - thanks to the great actor James Cagney who launched his movie career after seeing Audie's picture on the front cover of Life magazine! Audie Murphy was one of the best western actors in the 1950's but he played other roles as well. After the start of the Korean War in 1950, Murphy began a second military career and was commissioned a captain in the 36th Infantry Division. He wanted to join the fighting but the 36th was never sent overseas. He retired a major. Also not very well known is that after he tragically died in a plane crash at age 46, his wife Pamela devoted the rest of her life to helping veterans in a California VA hospital until her death 2010.

    Saw this movie a year or so ago, and just watched it again. I've always like Audie Murphy, and he was great in this comedy movie. Wish he'd done more of them. I've always liked Burgess Meredith too, and he was very entertaining in this movie. I also liked seeing all the other familiar faces in this movie. It's so much better than most of the movies made today.

    Audie Murphy God bless him was a freckled faced kid who earned every medal and The congressional Medal of Honour at 21/years of age . You could see the freckles when they pinned the Medal of Honour on the young man .he looked no more than 14 years of age .

      You are correct that Audie Murphy received every medal for valor this country awards including the Medal of Honor - he earned at the age of 19 which makes it even more amazing. Yes, you could see the freckles. What a good man who suffered severely from PTSD but eventually spoke out about it.

    very enjoyable. it was obvious to see how audie murphy was such a star. he owned each scene he was in and just acted in such a natural way. amazing to realize how he was such a conflicted guy in real life with his wartime nightmares and getting typecast into many westerns at universal despite that he did a first rate job in them.

    Before I read the comments, THANK YOU! There was so much wrong with this movie that it was a joy to watch!
    I grew up in the 60's, I never saw this gem before. Certainly Politically Incorrect: Burgess Meredith playing a Japanese con man? Now I gotta review the real story of Tokyo Rose. The stereotypes and cliches and predictability (the texting app anticipated "predictability ") - all make for a bad movie. But it drew me in and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
    It wasn't mean-spirited, but I'm not Japanese: I could see the Japanese being offended. I had to suspend my indignation when I first saw Meredith because I have such respect for him as an actor and I had to see how the producers expected to pull this off.
    Then, I came to see Audie Murphy, and he was missing from big chunks of the movie. They say John Wayne always played himself, and I guess the same could be said of Audie Murphy. But I think he was a good actor, holding his own in the roles he was cast in. He was really a supporting character in this movie, but I'm not disappointed.
    It's always the story for me. Long ago, I began keying on the credits, and I always look to see who wrote the screenplay. Yet, I don't remember the writer's name now, just that it was a good story that a talented team pulled off. Even Dennis the Menace's dad was in this one!
    You know beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm sure I'll read comments highly critical of this movie, and I would understand why. But I also see why so many folks bemoan this PC age that we live in. I remember when they announced that Jonathan Pryce would play the male lead in "Miss Saigon. " I was appalled. Still haven't seen the musical to this day.
    I guess what I'm saying is, in this 21st century, we should be sensitive and respectful of everyone. In regard to works of the past, produced in a less "enlightened" time, we have the privilege to vent our displeasure or suspend our indignation and try to enjoy the ride. That's what makes "Blazing Saddles " such a classic.
    Thank you.

      Spencer no one knows for sure who Tokyo Rose was, there were more than one number 2 Tokyo rose was a war criminal. Get your head straight and stop believing that Marxist crap you your head has been filled with.

      @secretsquirrel6308 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is nothing elightening about the Marx-inspired 'politically correct' indoctrination.
      The times past are only 'less enlighted' when viewed through the lens of Marxiat ideology. An important tenet of Marxism is history be branded less important, not meaningful, denigrated.
