For all those who's saying that he doesn't deserve the spot. You see, I also am a public speaker in school. It is quite hard to give PROPER pronounciation. He has near to perfect intonations and characteristic of each character. He also have near to perfect pauses. I actually admire how he does his speaking.

It's the content that was submerged by his theatrics that is concerning.
Same dramatized thing to pull the attraction of the audience ... I get that but poor content ... average or higher but certainly not champion level
This is not coming from xenophobia of asians but an objective one.

I can’t believe there are still people who are primitive thinkers and are not aware of diversity and embracing it. Sure he has that chinese or singaporean or malaysian accent caused by his first/native language (that’s natural) which actually adds amazing personality to himself which contributes to the impact of his actual amazing point/message. His enunciation was clear so I absolutely understood every word he uttered and I enjoyed his whole performance as he was hilarious (like a stand-up comedian) and touched by his golden nugget of wisdom.

By watching this video, there's a lot of things that i think is interesting. This speaker using a lot of non-verbal cues to make his speech fun and attractive. For examples, his eye contact. Before start his speech, he makes eye contact with the audience first to grab their attention to listen what he's going to say. After a few seconds, he was sure that all the audiences focusing on him, he started his speech. Then, his hands gestures. He makes a different kind of hands gestures for each word that we should listen. Such as, when he was talking about ways to get out from inner bullies. He shows different way or different points with different gestures to show the differences. Then, his facial expression. He shows different expressions with emotions that suit with what he told us. This can be seen when he jokes about how clean Greg's underwear. People know it's a joke by looking at his expressions that seems sarcastic. His body languange also something that we should apply when we do presentation or public speaking. He was standing up straight to show how confident he is about what he want to tell us. Eventhough, he wear underwear while telling us this. Something like showing us how serious inner bullies to us eventhough people would thought it is not a serious matters. Other that that, i think his pace is depends on what he is going to say. It fast when he's telling us jokes and slow and one by one when he's telling us about the main points. We should take this as an example when we're doing our talk or presentation. This is one of ways to grab audiences attention and make sure our points is delivered successfully.

Obviously there must be a reason why this speech was chosen as the best. In our view, his start and end of the speech were quite phenomenal. Sporting an underwear on stage like a superman to start his speech and getting the audience to conclude with him was quite engaging. Speakers are trying different things

A problem I find with many (not all) toast master talks is that they often sound contrived, unnatural, not genuine or emotionally manipulative. The speakers seem to be focusing on themselves- on impressing the audience with their skills rather than on connecting. And they seem like they are trying to be someone else- their idealized version of a public speaker. But what they imitated was form, not substance. There are shy speakers who act awkwardly on stage, but still deliver heart-felt speeches because authenticity is most charming and captivating. Personally, I much prefer the styles of delivery of story tellers in the Moth (though that is a slightly different form of public speaking. )

    • @dragateli
      @dragateli 6 ปีที่แล้ว +46

Right this style is focusing and prioritizing motivation and inspiration and from an outward perspective (can you BEHAVE like Tony Robbins, etc.), not who are you and expressing your true self.

Good evening everyone, first of all I would like to congrats Daren Tay for the spectacular speech he gave. For me who once used to get bullied totally agree with the statement he gave. The reasons we're being bullied because of our weak appearances. But never forget that even the weak can fight the strong. The only thing you have to do is having the courage to say what's right and confidence to stand up right. Even if they beat you up to your knees, you have to stand up again and again to show them that you can stand firm and believe you are not easy to get bullied.

superspoon0 Hey Loser! How do you like your new school uniform? I think it looks “great” on you.”
Those were the words of my high school bully - Greg Upperfield. Now, if you’re all wondering whether the underwear that Greg used was clean? I had the same questions.
Mr. contest chair, fellow toastmasters and anyone including those watching worldwide. If you are looking at Calvin Klein here, stop staring! My eyes are up here.
At age 14, when I go to school, my high school bully Greg would stop me in my track during recess and would tell me, “I gonna so get you outside, I gonna knock you in my teeth and punch you in the guts and laugh at your sorry behind. He didn’t quite use the word- behind. I just cleaned up the words because this is a toastmaster program.
And, have you ever wondered why bully needs to tell you the exact sequence that they gonna bully you? My friends, whenever I heard those words, my hands would tremble. Have you ever felt so fearful, that you cannot eat or sleep?
At age 16, Greg was 6 feet tall and weighed 240 pounds that I could only presume that was biological excilliation. I tried everything I could. I try buying a cake for Greg hoping he would stop. Only to have the cake on my face. I tried telling the teacher about it. Only to have Greg tormented me even more. I even tried taken up Taekwondo and karate. Only to break my wrists while trying to hit a thin point. My friends, just at I was about to give up. My aunt gave me words of wisdom. She said, “The way to deal with bully is not to hide or run, the way to deal with bully is to OUTSMART and OUTLAST.” It was like a light bulb in my mind and “Bing”. I CAN DO THAT. And with whatever 14-year-old smart brain I had, I managed to outsmart and outlast. Greg, I changed to a new school.
Several years later, after my encounter with Greg, I met a bigger bully, a better bully, a stronger bully. And this bully, no matter what I do, I could not get rid of it. This bully put equal negative words to me telling i am a loser, telling me that I would never ever succeed. My self-esteem was so damaged that someday I would just want to lie in bed or one day to get up. Have you felt that way before? This bully knows my schedule so well and stalked me 24-7 and I could not run away from this bully because this bully resides here. The bully is inside me. My friends, as much as we tried to deny it, we are our toughest and strongest bully. We beat ourselves up and put ourselves down. Have you ever felt that you are not good enough? I thought that way.
At times we are our worst enemies and at this point if you are wondering how long is Darren going to have this underwear outside his pants. This is the world championship of public speaking grand finals. Isn’t five minutes too long? If you felt that five minutes was long, how long have you been wearing your invisible underwear outside your pants? How long have been permitted your inner bully to take charge of your life? Five minute isn’t long. Now, I remembered the inspiration outsmart and outlast but this time I could not change to a new neighborhood. I could not change a new brain. I could not run away.
Something else must change. This was where a turning point in my life. I met another toastmaster This toastmaster uplifted me and changed my life forever. His name is Greg UpperField. I met Greg and was shocked to meet in a toastmaster meeting. Since when is toastmaster global turns from where leaders are made to where bullies are made. Greg by the way is a counselor teaching teenager to combat bullies. Who knew! And this was what Greg told me, he said, ” The best way to deal with inner bully is not to run or hide. You cannot run away from the bully here. The best way to deal with it is to stand firm. Face it and acknowledge its presence. When you do so, you are no longer identifying with it. You are stepping out and observing it. It’s like instead of being out there in the storm. You are in the house watching the storm. Your inner bully were weakened and fade.” I was thinking, wow it’s profound. How come you didn’t tell me when I was 14.
My friends, I’m standing on stage now in front of two thousands of you and more are watching worldwide but I am not afraid anymore. I am in control because I am acknowledging it, I am stepping out of it, observing it and watching it weaken and fade. My friends, let’s all not run away from our inner bullies anymore. Let us all face our inner bullies and acknowledge its presence and fight. Let us all be together as a family supporting one another because we can all outsmart and (outlast). Mr toastmaster

He passed a great message, one which has benefitted many people, even listeners who might not be aware of toastmasters before now..Face anything that bullies you and fight. The guy must be some sort of a 'made genius' who has practiced the art and techniques of speech giving to get to this height..He's even quite young, which makes it all the more impressive. Wonder how he achieved the 10K rule to become an expert... Congrats to Darren. Would like to hear the speeches of the other contestants..

In my opinion, that was a great speech because he was really good in putting funny elements that make his speech was very entertaining and not boring, he also has a good response from the audience. His speech also was really good because he try to make the audience became high-spirited and overcome inner bullies in his best way.
For his facial expression, also great. The way he speaks became along with his facial expression. His body languange looks so confident and not stiff, he keep moving around at the stage to interact with audience. He also leaning forwards that shows interest and attraction. In addition,he used some visual aids such as props which is 'Calvin Klein' white underwear to grab attention from the audience.
Moreover, he also make his eye contact with the audience which is can make audience understand better and keep hearing in his speech. He has a lot of hands movement such as pointing his finger and try to connect himself with the audience which is make him look not nervous at all and just feels comfortable in the stage.
Furthermore,he great in managing and changing his volume of voice which is sometimes loud and slow. He also use a moderate tone in advising the audience about stepping out from inner bullies. The rythm in his speech is smooth and without a fillers at all. Besides that, he used two conditions of pace which is slow to emphasize, advise and fast to show some humour or action my opinion, that was a great speech because he was really good in putting funny elements that make his speech was very entertaining and not boring, he also has a good response from the audience. His speech also was really good because he try to make the audience became high-spirited and overcome inner bullies in his best way.
For me, there was nothing that need to be improve. He was looks so relaxed and confident in giving his public speaking. The way he persuade audience to stepping out from inner bullies was really great. He make it so real and I think the audience also feels encouraged with his words.
I think I must improved a lot in my next presentation and make Daren as my role model in speaks in public which is become more confident and have a really smooth presentation without any fillers and success in making eye contact with listeners.

From the video ‘2016 World Champion of Public Speaking, Darren Tay Wen Jie’, he use a lot of facial expression. He delivered his emotion such as angry successfully. Next, Darren shows a perfect body movements and posture. He loves to move around the stage to make sure that the audience gave full attention to the topic that he is delivering. Moreover, Darren use a lot of hand movement and gestures. It shows that he has a high level of confidence and does not shy at all. He also shows a good eye contact with the audience. Furthermore, Darren use high pitch voice with a loud volume to show that he is delivering his speech seriously. After that, he also shows a smooth rhythm and fast pace to convey his message in humour way. Last but not least, Darren does not use fillers but he still manage to make his speech going smoothly without any problem.

There is One who perfectly understands those who have been bullied all their lives. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. He is the savior of the world.

    It's wonderful speech.
But as you know that toastmasters international has a lot of skills you should to use them all ,or most of them while you are speaking.
Those skills helps you to win the champions
    He deserves first place.

Not saying that he is not good. He is indeed a good speaker. but to me this is not a world championship speech. Not a wow. Its something that we always see at even club or area levels.
