Fun story about this movie: i went to see it in theaters with my gf and it was release day and we were a little early. Bought the tickets, went to the door, went to walk in and a group of what I can only describe as Oz fanatics stopped us and said "uh, there's a line!" And it was probably about 5 people all in Wizard of Oz clothes just hanging out near the door. So we apologized and stood behind them until an usher led us all in. When the movie began, the only people in the audience were the 5 Oz superfans and us. They appeared dejected when the movie ended. I still think about that frequently.
They also may have looked that way at the end of the movie because for a diehard Oz fan it was just awful! I find it funny that I could not disagree more with the positive things these guys are saying about it. I literally think the exact opposite of their good comments 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I'm still convinced that James Franco's role as the Wizard was written for Bruce Campbell (it is basically the perfect part for him) and the studios wanted to go for a younger, more recognizable face.
Oh Bruce would've absolutely brought the energy needed for this. He can be cartoony and double-sided easily. Him bantering and getting in arguments with the monkey wouldve been amazing.
Glad to hear someone else say the exact thing, I always thought it was written with him in mind! I guess maybe it was purely down to star power, I honestly think Franco might be the worst actor I've ever seen but I'd put money on more people knowing him over bruce Campbell.... Which is just a sad statement to even type.

When this movie was being made, there was a big push in Michigan for film studio incentives, and there was all this hype around it, like Michigan could be the next big thing in film making. So they built this huge studio in Pontiac, MI, and that's where this was filmed. During filming, they invited some state representatives to come and visit the set, to try and gain their support. I happen to be related to one of those representatives (first cousin once removed lol), and knowing that I was a big fan of film and animation, he reached out to see if I wanted to go with him. So I got to tour the whole place, walking right on to some of the sets. I was in a throne room with gold scattered everywhere, a dark forest with ten foot tall mushrooms, and a huge open warehouse like space, where they had the air balloon suspended on a wire that could "fly" across the set. At one point, we were standing just outside one of the sets, with around ten of the film-crew. A door opens, and Rachel Weisz walks out. She had just finished a scene, so she's in full wardrobe, looks incredible, and of course, everyone just turns to stare at her.. She gave us an awkward, "Hey, guys!" 🙂 We responded, "Hi..." 🥴 Then she was swiftly taken away by golf cart. All in all, it was really fun experiencing something like that happening right here in my home state. Unfortunately, the incentives were cut when Snyder took office (same guy that was at least partially responsible for the Flint water crisis - great guy), and the Michigan film industry pretty much died after that.
This was a very cool story. Thank you for sharing. And a sad one, as well. Though I guess as someone who sometimes makes money in the BC film industry I should be grateful that our bribes to Mr. Snyder paid off!

With regard to Oz the Great and Powerful - The Thing is one of my favorite movies. It has probably the best dog actor i’ve ever seen. It walks down a hallway, pauses and looks in each door - like an alien trying to figure things out. Basically, displaying uncharacteristically somber behavior for a dog.
Time for The Trivia! That's because it was a wolf-dog hybrid. The crew and actors all raved about how much better it was as an actor than a regular dog, because it would hit its marks and complete its directions so perfectly as to almost be robotic. The fact that it was a wolf-dog also caused all of the other dogs in the film (who were Siberian Huskies) to be naturally wary of it. In the scene where the ThingDog is first put into the kennel and lays down while the other dogs move away from it, looking terrified -- no training was given to the Huskies! They were actually just that uncomfortable with the wolf-dog. The wolf-dog's name was "Jed" and also starred in the "White Fang" movies! :)

If only the boys, or one of the boys knew about Milka and could make this comparison.

Absolutely insane to me that Mason would go for "Wizards of Odds(?)" when the boys are literally from Oz. That's why I love them, they subvert my expectations for making sense!
It's funny because lots of people, including myself, liked Garden State when it came out. Because when you're 19-20 years old, you really believe you're gonna meet a girl like Natalie Portman in a psychiatrist's waiting room and it will require almost no effort on your part. But oof, that movie is painfully bad when you watch it 10 years later.
Last year, my dad got a streaming box that could pirate any movie ever made. And what movie does he watch first with his unbridled new power? Oz: The Great and Powerful.
It truly is a shame that whenever people talk about The Wizard of Oz, and other adjacent films, nobody EVER mentions The Wiz. And maybe I'm very attached to the movie because I'm African-American and it's a staple project within the Black community, but even aside from that, The Wiz was a technically impressive film within its own right. The music was incredible (which is to be expected when you have both Michael Jackson and Diana Ross playing the leads), the sets (especially the set piece under the Twin Towers which doubled for the Emerald City) were awe inspiring and the alternate take on the world is darkly beautiful with an urban twist. I wish TH-camrs would give more shine to The Wiz, because it truly deserves it (especially over films like Oz, the Great and Powerful). But I know they never will.
The similar personalities thing was done even in the original Wizard of Oz film. The farmer who sounds heartless, the farmer who makes mistakes, and the farmer who saves Dorothy from the pigs but was terrified in the process.
I totally forgot about this movie. Its funny that Sam's first PG movie was to have JAMES FRANCO in it. Last person I would think of when a PG movie comes to mind.

Just the thought of 8 Crazy Nights, 50 First Dates, and Uncut Gems all having Adam Sandler's character be the same person in a trilogy of films is fucking hilarious.
In regards to the lack of Sam Raimi in this, I'd love to see you guys check out The Quick and the Dead. It's a Sam Raimi-directed western that I had never known existed until recently, featuring Russel Crowe, a pre-Titanic Leo Dicaprio, Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone, and Lance Henrikson. It's a fever-dream of a movie. Perfect for the caravan! Love ya guys

Now, the peculiar thing is, I'm not a celebrity myself and for the love of me I can't remember what I was doing between all those hoity-toity famous people. It's a bizarre memory I have of this movie and the day it was released.

That's been on my watchlist, and tbh, I'm pretty annoyed it was in here. Same with that "US" spoiler, but that one's on the boys for talking about it. :(

I love these guys and this Channel, but come on, don't stick a massive Spoiler for a great film like "Uncut Gems" as a throwaway random joke. That's like totally not cool, Lawrence!
Loved this breakdown - I always enjoyed this film. It's very Raimi, and I'll always take more Raimi in the world (and ... he's sorta stretching his aesthetic a bit? Taking some interesting risks, having been given some good funds to play with for the effects and overall production design), And, it was a shame Franco died when he did, cos he does show some good range in this, more than I'd seen him do in any other of his films. You're so right about Williams being so deeply wholesome and GOOD - she makes it way more than just one note - her glowing goodness and powerful innocence is so deep it's actually scary! Kunis - great as always. I wish she was in more films. I even watch Jupiter Ascending because of her!

3:54 i feel like "CROOK! LOOK IT UP!" should just be a banner on the bottom for the whole duration of this video
Maso saying "you liked Garden State when it came out!l killed me. Like he got him 😭😭😭
It's funny because lots of people, including myself, liked Garden State when it came out.
What about the SciFi channel sequel miniseries Tin Man? You should definitely also cover it. It might be even darker and grittier than the NBC show.
I enjoyed it
Tin man was interesting. Yeah I liked it too
The best dark Oz adaptation is Tarsem Singh’s Emerald City, the short-lived NBC series
@@TrekBeatTK I'd argue that the darkest version of Oz is the original book. Children's book were very different in 1900...
The editing was insane on this one.
Next week is The Thing?! Can't wait to see how many screenshots of Ebon Moss-Bachrach there's gonna be!
How the heck did you manage to make his name clickable?!
@@johnwerner69 New feature.
It's just going to be twenty minutes of Moss-Bachrach images with no dialogue.
The similar personalities thing was done even in the original Wizard of Oz film. The farmer who sounds heartless, the farmer who makes mistakes, and the farmer who saves Dorothy from the pigs but was terrified in the process.
Did they just spoil the ending of Uncut Gems?
Actually devastated y’all won’t be doing the Wiz
The Wiz should have been part of this. But I guess it's true, sometimes "you can't win".
I totally forgot about this movie. Its funny that Sam's first PG movie was to have JAMES FRANCO in it. Last person I would think of when a PG movie comes to mind.
I’ve been hedging for SO long, but I will be joining Big Sandwich so I can see James and Mason talk about The Thing early. I love that fucking goopy movie
Once again, the best comedy editors in the business, fantastic effort and adds so much
9:31 - "What she needed was, like, a 30-year-old slacker."
I mean, definitely true for Elphaba in Wicked, what with Fiyero "Dancing Through Life" and into her heart with such gems as "life is fraught-less when you're thoughtless - those who don't try never look foolish."
Just the thought of 8 Crazy Nights, 50 First Dates, and Uncut Gems all having Adam Sandler's character be the same person in a trilogy of films is fucking hilarious.
I love that you're still doing the "James Franco is dead" bit 😂
Tobey Maguire accidentally killed him on the set of Spider-Man 3.
@@li-limandragon9287
"accidentally"
Yall still should of done 'The Wiz'. Your unfiltered, first watch, reaction and takes would of been comedy gold IMO. Love what yall do!!
It’s not really a fever dream ? The plot is straightforward it’s played straight ? Just a western. Like it’s good but how is it a fever dream ?
@@alexanderguerrero347I’ve seen it, it is insane.
I didn't know Sam Raimi Directed that movie. Fun film
@@li-limandragon9287 what specifically is insane in the movie
@@alexanderguerrero347 Lance Henriksen cosplaying Ocelot from Metal Gear, Preacher Russel Crow spending most of the movie chained to a fountain before boning Sharon Stone or Gene Hackman killing Keith David and his own son Leo.
One of my favorite movies of all time. And I’m 50.
Lawrence, don’t ever changes. You too Ben, whenever you may be.
Glad I watched uncut gems before this...
"Probably not what you would experience with James Franco..." 😂
19:24 Hooray! I was wondering where you were. Were you doing another play? Another long fabulous movie review? Very happy to have you back!
So glad y’all doing The Thing y’all need to do more HORROR MOVIES
My Aunt met James Franco when he was learning his sleight of hand stuff for this movie from the magician, she used to work for lol Vegas is wild,
You keep talking about getting scarred as kids for the last two. I was 11 when this came out and the Mika Kunis becoming a witch thing scarred the bejeezus out of me. That’s why I haven’t gone back.
Mila is so attractive either way so it didn’t bother me.
@@li-limandragon9287fear boner
I have always liked this film up to this day, but I also saw it as a kid before seeing the Evil Dead films, and HOLY shit, Sam Raimi really just did Army of Darkness again!
I remember when this movie came out, I was invited to a "gold carpet" première with a lot of celebs in Holland.
Now, the peculiar thing is, I'm not a celebrity myself and for the love of me I can't remember what I was doing between all those hoity-toity famous people.
It's a bizarre memory I have of this movie and the day it was released.
Might not be the best movie but it definitely captures the look of oz more than the new wicked movie.
4:25 incredible, absolutely 2 pictures next to each other showing the difference between the shades of Cadbury & milka
The Thing might be my #1 movie all time. Can't wait for next week's episode!
Can I suggest a little run on Caravan of Garbage of "low-budget hidden gems"?
For instance "Dave Made a Maze" would make for a cracking episode. :)
The Wiz was so weird and wonderful, some core childhood memories, definitely got it over in Oz!
I had to look up if James Franco was dead but u guys got me
Fun fact - Cadbury and Milka are both owned by Mondelez, so there is no issue, only endless cross overs between all of Mondelez snacks - oreo x milka, cadbury x lu, basically, its a team up
I was literally thinking what Ben's been doing.
He died. Now he's back.
He’s just adding spoilers to random scenes.
Somehow Ben has returned
"Oz the Great and Trivial" was RIGHT THERE!
if you call the trivia section oz the great and trivia you will cement yourself as my favorite youtuber of all time
edit: u mad man
Insane. If you put these 3 movues in a line-up, I would have never have guessed that THIS was the Same Rami film.
Ben from Canada’s back next week??? LFG!! (No offense, Lawrence, you do great work as well!)
I have not been by the channel in a few years and am happy to stop by!
A special congratulations to Mason on having a completely brown beard and not changing in your picture at all 😆
Holy uncut gems spoiler
Hahaha
ikr... that was dirty
It wasn’t dirty. It was disrespectful.
That's been on my watchlist, and tbh, I'm pretty annoyed it was in here. Same with that "US" spoiler, but that one's on the boys for talking about it. :(
@@timhough you’re completely right. But it’s not just a plot point spoiled. It’s pretty massive.
I kinda wish they did Zardoz for their Wizard of Oz retrospective.
The Temple run x Oz the great and powerful crossover game was goated🐐🔥
John Carpenter's The Thing is on of the best sci-fi and horror films of all time.
I was so caught off guard by Maso's spot on impression of James Franco's buttler at 15:46
I’ll never get over the fact that somehow Danny Elfman was allowed to use the Canadian national anthem as a theme song for a movie and nobody called him on it.
Ummm... what?
Cant belie James Franco dismissed his old butler like that and the one in the film something about a corn of coblin, i didnt quite catch it.
The WIZ is iconic. Such a great take on the story. 110% worth watching.
I love these guys and this Channel, but come on, don't stick a massive Spoiler for a great film like "Uncut Gems" as a throwaway random joke. That's like totally not cool, Lawrence!
Please do one more “That guy who says Rodney” compilation before the end of the year! It’s my only request!
- This is my second time asking.
19:26 What a tease!!!
