  • This is part two of my DIY projector video an is done more to show ho you can bypass the Lamp on a 3 LCD projector and what type of light source do you need for this type of projector in order to get good results.
There is also a Blender 3D animation at the end of the video.

Thanks for the comment. I do not think in 2022 it is worth modifying old projectors when there are so many low cost LED projectors available at reasonable costs.

Hello again, I almost finished my Sanyo 3LCD projector. I used 4die Cree power LED MC-E 6500K. I tried 2700K but colors are too much yellow and there was no clear white. In 6500K it's looks very good, brigthness is enough to watch in evenings and perfect in night. Colors are close to normal lamp. I used half-flat lens and it is best solution. Everything is fitted in original lamp chassis.

Hi Electrodacus, just like to thank you for all your help so far, I've used lots of advice you have given in the previous comments to get most of the parts for this build but there is one part I can't seem to find. Could you tell me where you got the mount for the large lens, I can't seem to find one on dealextreme where you said to get the lens from. Thank you

    Hello electrodacus!
This is the best modding I have ever seen with a led -especially with that low wattage.
Magnificant! The condenser lens inside the origin lamphouse is simpel but genial!
Are you going to do the same thing with a led light with more wattage?
    I would enjoy that!
    Thank you for the clips!

Yeah, that is what I thought would be the case. Those big 10,000 and now even 20,000 lumen LED's aren't single point light sources, the chip has an array. When these are focused on a wall what you see it a magnification of the surface of the chip. The only other way I could think to do it would be to use a diffuser, and then collect and focus that light.
The reason I am interested in this, is at my place of work we supply lots of LCD projectors to bars and clubs

Maybe someday I'll send you photo how it looks. One and only thing to do is to connect transoptor mainboard to turn on and off the LED automatically. Many thanks for an inspiration and knowledge. Evolve yourself. The best wishes for you.

Are any of these bridgeable to bypass lamp detection etc? your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Electrodacus,, First off THANKS for all your work with the projector mod's!! You are the Best!! Could you please list the exact Make and Model LED part numbers on your various mod's so the rest of us can take advantage of your work. I am thinking of using either a 50 or a 100 watt 6000 K LED module but am concerned that the originating point of light will still be to wide to achieve any real brightness. PT 1

I am trying the same thing at the moment, found the 3 pin wire that goes to the electronics responsible for controlling the light. Just need to do a bit of testing to figure out witch one is the control and what does the other one do. And see if the projector will display images before I buy all the hardware.

I can get the light source as close as a couple of centimeters from the film. The actual film area on 35mm is about 2.5cm square so it's not tiny. I don't have any optics in the light path yet, I'm still researching how I can do it really. The back of the projector is totally open with the shutter then the totally exposed film. From there it goes through the backup lens and then the anamorphic (if required).

  • @electrodacus
    @electrodacus  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The best LED you can use in a converted projector is the CREE XM-L.
Unfortunately this is a 10W LED and puts out around 1000lumen maybe less depending on bin so about 50 to 60lumens out of the projector.
But this is the largest you can use it has a 2x2mm die and that is about the limit so that you can collimate the light in to a laser like beam.
Because LCD or DLP is smaller than 3cm diagonal and distance from light source is about 30cm the spot from 1m needs to be less than 10x10cm.
    5000-6000K.

  • @vince086
    @vince086 13 ปีที่แล้ว

@electrodacus Yeah the central one is ground, connected to 2 optoisolator, but they are in opposite direction. Just connected the central one to one of the other 2 on either side and both time the "Light problem" led light up.
Wonder if there is another way to trick it into thinking there is a working bulb, big resistor between the contacts that go to the bulb...?
Will do a bit more testing if I have time this weekend, I would love to have a project but cant afford a new one.

Thanks a lot for a very nice mod on projector. I have currently a panasonic projector with a busted bulb and would like to know which CREE XM-L Led I can use. There are 3 kinds of it. Can I use the cpu heatsink for it? I can easily modify the circuit to fool the projector into thinking that the bulb is working. I also have access to lens in order to focus the light ( lens with almost 3.5 inches aperture and is apochromatic or color free).
    Thanks again,

    hi electro,
the lenses i bought off dx were those of what you specified and was able to focus it , but it's really dim even in the dark.( the led seemed to be bright as i can't stare at it directly) although it might still give off more light if the right driv er is to be used. so may i ask for your power source design like the one you used in this video(old laptop power source and the resistors' size and value to step down the voltage)...thank you in advance and more power!

I want to replace the xenon arc lamp in a 35mm movie projector with an led for home use, I have seen these 100w LEDs that seem like they would be useful for this but I imagine I'd need some precise mirrors/optics to pull this off? I'm building a lamp box from scratch.

Would a 10W Cree give enough light to see very much though? Film is likely denser than LCDs so would probably require more light. I suppose for £10 delivered it's worth a go though.

These days, when arrive 1800 lumen LED flashlight, LED will pull out and do experiments with him. I have some lenses and I'll try to put it as close to the color wheel on my DLP projector :)
But I not giving up and diode 100 watts! With ordinary lenses is impossible to focus, now try 2-3 daysI
Now my last hope is to focus all his light with the help of Fresnel lenses. I guess a month to arrive and fresnel lenses for last experience with 100 watts diode.

The ones i have ordered are 150w Osram powerstars ($2.50 each), small enough to fit in the original lamps reflector. So that solves one problem, also they last 8000 hours and as for the LCD's i have a spare projector the same model in pieces with good LCD's in. Im hoping they will work with the UHP ballast, Metal halides are also HID but they are AC instead of DC. If not i will have to buy a ballast i guess ($20)

Ok, ballast is already out, I am also considering replacing the noisy fans with quieter ones and more directed airflow. I also think that my led and heatsink assembly will fit perfectly into the old bulb bracket. Should make for better light direction too.

Hello electrodacu, thanks, much appreciate it,however, I had already tried the 50mmv x18mm lens on its own, but with the 45mm lens I got better results, but the image is very dim rather than unfocused, I will try using the 22mm lens in between the LED and the 45mm lens, but I do know how you managed to fix the 22mm to the LED and find the correct focal length.I thought I can push the LED current bit higher, for brighter light. is that OK?

since the multiple little LED's on the panel act more like a flood light pattern than a tight spot pattern. It seems like the Cre Xml series had a much tighter point of light but I am concerned that it might not handle the wattage. I am also considering using three separate LED's directly behind the LCD polarizors and panels as well. Pt 2

What is the lens used in front of the LED. EBay Item? Would I be able to use a 12V power supply from an old PC to power the CREE XM-L LED? I've bypassed the ballast board on my Sanyo PLC XU31, and put a car HID bulb in with the 12V power supply, but its not bright enough and the beam is not focused. This LED/Lens combo looks like its solid.

It's a movie projector (like you would see in a cinema) though it's not all that big, most of the bulk in those is in the base and the lamphouse. The original lamp would have been a 500-1000w xenon arc lamp. Just a large arc lamp with a big reflector behind it. No optics for light convergence or anything like that. No idea what the lumens would have been originally, a lot I recon. But that would have been for a 200"+ screen!

What about a 20w LED that puts out 2000 lumens ? Im quite new to this circuit stuff so i was wondering is there anything like a solenoid that i could jump off a fans power supply to turn the solenoid on/off, then have the solenoid as a switch on the LED's Neutral or Positive input ? So when the fans turn off the LED turns off too.

I have built some DIY projectors, and also succesdul modded a commercial projector some years ago with a H7 car bulb :). I love modding and have tried the led-light as well -but only as a 3w powerled -and it was not so succesful as your modding.
I thought the origin fans for UHP-lamp was enough for cooling a higher wattage led light..
If you find a solution to cool the high wattage led light you should have the official Nobel Price of modding :)

This is a great video. Many thanks. For a 120W bulb, do I need a 120W LED or there is a rough way to calculate how much watt LED will replace 120 W normal bulb ?

    • @electrodacus
      @electrodacus  8 ปีที่แล้ว

+hypertuch To get the same amount of light you will need roughly the same LED power but you can not converge light using a lens form an LED die larger than about 2x2mm and the most powerful LED with such a small light surface is around 10W.
The commercial available LED projectors have LED's for each color and much closer to the LCD or DLP.
Unless this is just a hobby is better to get a proper LED projector than to play with modifying an old projector. I made this video more than 5 years ago back then there where no commercial LED projectors available.
I got about 25 lumen from a 6W LED so you can expect at most around 50lumen output form a modified projector with a 10W LED.

. Do you have any idea how to test the optocupler sending so that i can find out the signal that it is sending and mimic this signal with a microprocessor? also if you know how i can send you a picture of my lamp assembly just let me know. The led is a SMD that is running on 19volts and is mounted inside the existing bulb housing on a heat sink, and it has a condenser lens on it.

Guys, what bulbs are you using?
I use Osram cool blue h1 and a modified 13v pc power supply.
The dark look very good looking and in slightly lit room.
Tried and hid xenon but the effect is like that with halogen osram, except that money is more about hid.
A modification of the video work flawlessly :))

How many LUMENS did you get for Watts IE 100W LED = 4000 Lumens
    Something like that
What wattage did you use? Would you use larger or smaller or same wattage?
Is the LCD a HOT or a Warm white LCD? Wave length used? That is if you still have the information.
If you purchased the LED on EBAY... Do you still have a link to the item or seller or like item?
Thanks you saved me and I am sure many others throwing out projectors needing new out of stock bulbs.

Well ive tried unplugging the switch, shorting every way possible, grounding them and its just a Ballast error, if i put a halogen in the ballast it works.. but its not very bright and its just a matter of time until the halogen pops.

Doesn't work, i tried it. I think it has a serial communication and it defiantly has octocuplers. Will a Metal Halide of the same wattage work with the UHP ballast ?

Sorry I do not understand the question. Modern commercial single DLP or LcOS projectors use 3 separate Led's R,G and B that are controlled in sequence so you will have that flicker and rainbow effect. This is a 3 LCD projector so an LCD for each color and white light for a lamp is split in to the 3 colors to supply to each of the 3 LCD then image combined with a prism.
Is also possible to have individual RGB Led's one for each of the 3 LCD but that is not very popular as is more expensive than single DLP or single LcOS (also an LCD but reflective).

Good job, I like it. Many thanks for the inspiration. I have 30W Power LED + reflector as collimator already installed in my Sanyo PLC-SU35 - 3LCD. Brightness in dark room was not exactly like I expected. And here is my "brightness" :) Lens is the key to success. Tomorow I'll be back with results. I've found beautiful lens ø=60mm. I hope, that it will give 200% of improve.

I just opened my VP and run into problems.I discovered the switch lamp cover.I closed the circuit. Then i uncoupled what i think is the lamp elec.source( voltage? can i use a hid bulb?).The VP starts, rotates the color disc for 1 min,and for 10 seconds i can see the projection of my desktop(using a cree 3W flaslight) after this it enters a sleep mode with the fans on. it shuts down after 2-3 min.
