Epson emp-s4 Projector LED Mod

  • Found a $25 projector without a lamp so I figured the only reasonable thing would be to LED mod it instead of buying an expensive lamp. I'll get around to posting detailed info on my blog within the next few days.

    I modified my projector to run on LED's and put in it a XM-L T6 flashlight that concentrates the light in one square, at first it did not look promising, then I disassembled the optic block and took out the first lens with the little squares and the lens with the metal grid on it, and that is when it started to look like a projector image, the next thing to do is to buy a proper driver for the LED, it needs 3A at 3.3v and the driver in the flashlight is running the LED at 1A 3,1v. So 300Lm with the flashlight driver, 1000Lm with a 3A driver. Try to remove those lenses, it will make a huge difference.

    Yes an DLP projector uses an White light source like ever other projector. Only the main difference are of course the Color wheel and the beam of light is more narrow compared to LCD. So its difficult to focus the light which will lead to more waste. Thats why the idea of multiple different light sources(3 Colors) came up to eliminate the color wheel and the optics needed to put the light beam tough the color wheel.

    Hi. looks fantastic.
    im doing the exact same mod on a SONY projector. i bypassed the optocoupler that turns the projector off when there is no light bulb. and now all i need is a good power LED. as you mentioned, power dissipation can be an issue since there isnt much room for the LED and heatsink to go in.
    if we had a DLP instead of 3 LCD projectors the output lumens should be larger.
    i might go as high as 50W LED since i dont think that a PC prpoesor heatsink could dissipate more then that

    I only altered the electrical wiring and had to remove some plastic. I left the original optics intact. It was a quick mod that only took two days.

    A UHP or any stock lamp used in a projector also emits IR radiation. Compared to a 35+ watt HID or Halogen bulb the amount of IR radiation from a UHP build is much more. And its not only the IR radiation the projector suffers from. There is also a UV radiation which will lead to LCD degradability and especially a Blue LCD. And if there was a respectful alternative with the same amount of light output without all the cons of heat/IR/UV I guess then the manufactures should have released it already

    Hi sjm, how're you?
    I dropped a Philips LED (it was installed in a lamp) then twisted the cover and took the PCB off, there's tiny transformer looking that had desoldered from the impact it seems (the lamp has fallen hard a few times).
    I can repair it and solder it again but does that tiny transformer looking thing have polarity or is it like a regular resistor or fuse, no + and -?
    Thank you.
    God bless, Rev. 21:4

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes the transformer must be installed in the correct orientation it was originally. Transformers have two sides, a primary and secondary, with different number of turns so if you get it backwards and the high/low voltage sides are swapped it could either just not work or blow.

    • @SevenDeMagnus
      @SevenDeMagnus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sjm4306 Thanks, how come even LED bulb (which is small) need a small transformer (assuming I identified that subcomponent correctly)? Are there any other subcomponent that looks like a transformer?
      By the way, it'll be a relatively easy fix but how do you tell which is the negative & positive poles?

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheaper led bulbs use many series leds and/or more dangerous capacitive droppers instead of a transformer as a cost cutting measure. Especially if it's a smart bulb with wifi and a controller it should have a transformer to step down the voltage for safety/reliability. To identify which way it should go try and google pics of the fcc application which often show teardown pics of the pcb. If not you have to measure the pri/sec impedance and guess based on reverse engineering the traces on the pcb.

    Good morning friends, I have the following problem with my video beam Epsom brand EMP S4; by a bad connection there was a short circuit and the lamp is damaged (this is indicated by the flashing red light / lamp), took him to a specialized company that mark and I noted that the lamp was broken indeed. I bought a generic Amazon, I proceeded to change the damaged according to the new designated by the coach, but once done, still gives me the same error (the blinking red light / lamp). I wonder why that happens is not the original and replaced it with a generic? Do I have to reset the computer? Someone who can tell me what could be the problem.
    Thanks to hands.

    The only problem with DLP projectors from what I've heard is that you would need three LEDs (a red, blue, and green one) which would briefly flash in quick succession to make up the entire color image since there is only one DLP array. This is why early projection TV's needed a spinning color wheel to color the light source and form three superimposed images for each color channel.

      Sounds like something optical is misaligned, should be possible to fix if you are so inclined. As for using it for random projects, you could turn it into a projector, a UV sla 3D printer, or really anything that requires light to be projected in a controlled manner.

    Seriously. is not recomended use any type of incandescent bulb like halogen or tungten lamp. They emit a lot of IR radiation that becomes heat (and do not help to make the proyection more "bright"). If you can. You should use high power leds, or mercury lamps. The light in both are nearly clear and do not emit so much IR like others.

I think Phillips makes a 20W or so phlat (not sure of spelling) light that is made for such applications but is very expensive compared to these cheap as chips while led arrays.

      Thanks for the links. When I get the time and money I'll give it a try. The only issues I see are that the regulator is a voltage regulator and LEDs are current controlled devices so a current regulator is necessary (or adding a series resistor and relying on the voltage regulation) and I doubt it will be thermally able to supply the 3A across the specified output range.This would probably do the trick though: www.ebay.com/itm/LED-Power-Supply-Driver-20W-For-20Watt-High-power-LED-Light-Lamp-Bulb-85-265V-/321231204111?hash=item4acadf2f0f:g:FKcAAOxyNDhSYfP7

      It goes perfectly with that regulator, no need to complicate things. LED specifications: - Working voltage: 16~18V
      - Working current: 1.4A. I used an ordinary laptop charger 20v 2.5a , you need to step down voltage at about 17v with theat regulator and the led use the amps he nededs.
