    Both the "conflicting sources" for Mewtwos origin aren't even conflicting. Mew could just have easily been the surrogate for the scientists genetic experiments resulting in Mewtwo

      Not to mention, it's implied he's saying "mew gave birth" as in "The DNA of Mew has been modified into a genetically similar duplicate." and what is a child if not a genetically similar copy of the parents grown in a small enclosed space? Basically they're saying "Mew's a parent because we made them a son!" That's how I interprete it, anyway.

    7:34 Eh, arguable. Movepools can very based on game & the required balancing. & while it is noted to dislike fighting, it's also noted in multiple Pokedex entries to forage for small bugs.
    18:05 In Pokemon Sun, Abra was noted as eating berriesj. "It sleeps 18 hours a day. Even while sleeping, it will teleport itself to treetops and pick and eat berries there."
    25:48 Gender Unknown. The Japanese Kanji for the term, as seen in Generation 2 & in other games is closer to "Unknown, indeterminate", etc. Perhaps Mewtwo is indeed neither, but the official term is more accurately Gender Unknown.
    Anyway, neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading!

    Seeing as Oddish hide underground during the day and walk around at night, and learn moonlight I think they could be an adapted nocturnal autotroph.

    • @RCwyatt917
      @RCwyatt917  2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      It's definitely a possibility and something I thought about, but at the end of the day I believe the fact that most other Pokémon that learn moonlight do not at all seem like autotrophs suggests that moonlight doesn't serve such a purpose.

    • @Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz1024
      @Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz1024 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Using IRL physics rather than magic fantasy physics that would take about 30-300 years (there's a lot of disparity between plant efficiency) to equal 1 day, ~3-30 years if the nocturnal autotroph is 100% efficient to equal 1 day of a normal autotroph's energy gain.
      I just think that's kinda funny conceptually with how useless a nocturnal autotroph would be.

    • @zaclittlejohn2701
      @zaclittlejohn2701 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I meant more along the lines of -auto trophy during the day to absorb sunlight while hidden as a plant, then being active during a nocturnal cycle to make sure they have a good spot for photosynthesis during the next day. When many grass types can create vegetation, it seems prudent to be finding a good spot often instead of locked to one spot every day. Maybe using the move moonlight to focus their photosynthesis to keep active for a small time while not actively gaining more energy.

    The Onix losing to Pikachu from the anime actually works perfectly in the game. As long as you assume that the sprinklers applied "Soak" to Onix, changing it's type to water type and making it weak to lightning type attacks.

    This series is great, looking forward to more.
    Anyways, my best guess for why on earth Cerulean Cave is the way it is may be because Mewtwo created the ecosystem itself. Because of its stats, it can basically do whatever the fuck it wants, and as such, probably wanted to do, as the kids call it, a little bit of trolling. It would also explain why Wigglytuff and Raichu exist here, because Mewtwo probably altered the properties of the cave insofar that it would force evolution in Jigglypuff and Pikachu.

    I know you said you aren't looking at things from a plot kind of view, but the way I see Cerulean Cave's seemingly random spew of Pokémon is Mewtwo having escaped to the cave and is using it as its hideout, using its psychic powers to attract and possibly control strong Pokémon to come and keep humans away from the cave, and thus away from Mewtwo. The cave being essentially less of an ecosystem and more of an improvised dungeon with guards.

    Poison was once super effective on bug; so bellsprout eating bugs makes sense

    • @ItsRlyMe
      @ItsRlyMe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My head canon is that bellsprout and oddish share a niche; but oddish is nocturnal like it is in gen 2, meaning they have little contact. This would also explain moonlight. Maybe bellsprout are more effective at their strategy, forcing oddish to move to hunting at other times and target other pokemon like water types to fill the gap.

    • @ItsRlyMe
      @ItsRlyMe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Leaf stones look like fossilized plants, so maybe nutrient rich peat might offer the same or similar benefits; so, stone evos like those might be possible in the wild. What it could be is that they evolved to have an inhibitor to their growth to limit competition within the species. Maybe the role Victoribell plays is beneficial to the group but might be harmful if all species members reached that stage.

    Regarding types, I’ve always had a theory that the type can create some of the traits regarding it, and that types are what separate Pokemon from animals.
    The types are clearly something fundamental, as evidenced by the existence of the Plates. It seems possible that the Pokemon world was once similar to our own, but perhaps Arceus intervened somehow, granting some animals types and so changing them into Pokemon.

  • @Macer84

    Mewtwo is very clearly intelligent, far more so than most other pokemon. It has also been stated on numerous occasions that pokemon enjoy battling, a charicteristic that may be amplified in Mewtwo, considering its role as the "Ultimate Batteler". Finally, Mewtwo can learn teleport in gen 1, which, as you pointed out with Abra, can be used to transport other creatures. My conclusion, therefore, is that Mewtwo may have purposefully moved high level pokemon to Cerulean cave in order to battle and grow stronger.

    • @devinusleton6634
      @devinusleton6634 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think it would be very interesting if Mewtwo did indeed purpousefully move strong pokemon to his cave to collect pokemon for various reasons, almost like it's trying to be a pokemon trainer itself. Kind of fits the theme in a "what has science done" kinda way.

    chilling hypotesis on why there are so many high level pokemon in cerulean cave, and even stone evolution.
    They are the released pokemon of trainers killed by Mewtwo, in the attempt of catching it.
    The pokemon in the cave are all pokemon league worthy...and only champions can access the cave, maybe because a lot of strong trainers, maybe even Elite 4 level, tried to catch it, died, the pokemmon got released, and then they closed the cave, letting only the champion inside.
    Of course, we don't know if there was a champion before Blue (maybe killed by Mewtwo?), but most likely Lance never entered, and Blue did not have the chance, leaving the player 9red) the duty to subdue the crazed genetic monster.

    My hypothesis is that the stones are concentrations of potential energies that would allow Pokémon to evolve their fantastical characteristics. Whatever is creating the basis for charizards to breath fire is probably also causing fire stones to form in particularly hot environments. This can also explain why humans in the Pokémon world are so unique. They could have evolved to be profoundly resistant to these energies, potentially explaining how humans can evolve in a world of Pokémon despite seeming so inherently different.

    • @squidlump
      @squidlump ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel that the existence of mega evolution, primal forms, gigantimax, terastilization, and paradox forms also supports this hypothesis

    I don’t know if you have already addressed these in previous videos but some Ghost types are indeed actual ghosts, with examples like Yamask. Dragons is weird because Dragons are a much wider group than just type, with as Lance put it “Not all dragons have to be dragon type” so Pokemon like Charizard, Gyarados, Aerodactyl, etc. are dragons in phenotype but not in type

    • @RCwyatt917
      @RCwyatt917  2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I will discuss such ghosts whenever I get to them, but by current opinion on them is that unless specifically shown in the games (as in not just said in pokedex or by npcs), such descriptions are simply folklore surrounding the Pokémon.

    S&V give a bit of insite into the stones with eevee'd pokedex inter which states that the stones radiate energy that interacts with eevee's DNA causing it to evolve this means that the evolutions may cause mutations which could be why the stats increase

  • @Jack-hd3qf
    @Jack-hd3qf ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Regarding Oddish and other absorb users, I think that even if there was selection for that move's offensive capabilities, it most likely evolved as a secondary function of the already innate ability to absorb water nutrients from the ground. Even without synthesis Oddish still seems like it's primarily an autotroph using the absorb/chlorophyll combo, while the ability to steal energy from other pokemon via absorb seems like a secondary usage of an existing ability for defense and some additional healing, as all of its moves besides sweet scent are probably defensive: oddish heterotrophy evolved less as a direct adaptation and more like Gould and Lewontin's spandrels of San Marco, though sweet scent indicates that it may be a more important food source now than when it first evolved.
    Bellsprout's line is obviously carnivorous, but it could function like actual pitcher plants and feed on insects etc in order to supplement themselves with nitrogen, phorphorous, and certain amino acids in nutrient poor soil while still using chlorophyll to create all of the carbohydrates it needs.

    Mewtwo might have used it's powers to bring the Pokemon to the cave either to fight them, attract trainers, or repeal trainers. Mewtwo is supposed hard wired for fighting this is vague and unhelpful because we don't know what it considers opponents or it's goal in fighting is. If it is doing it to fight them then it should be roaming the cave unless it was resting when we find it in game. Attracting trainers doesn't contradict the first idea and would be based on the idea strong trainers want strong Pokemon. Repealing contradicts the other theories and it is using the other Pokemon as a type of super defense.

    Hasn't the idea of non-pokemon animals been long since retconned?

    • @RCwyatt917
      @RCwyatt917  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1. I don't really care about the universe's cannon in this series, just what the games seem to suggest
      2. If it was retconned, then that doesn't really make a lot of sense. What about humans? That would mean they'd have to be Pokémon to if animals don't exist. What about plants? Are all the trees and grass Pokémon?
      3. When I say non-Pokémon animals, I'm mainly saying things that haven't been designated Pokémon. The normal sized insects and other such small creatures that would have to exist to feed the Pokémon population could be "Pokémon", but they aren't catchable or in the pokedex.

    • @RCwyatt917
      @RCwyatt917  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They'd definitely lean more towards animals with plant like properties, but considering the extent of their "Plant-ness" is mainly that they're green and have grass moves, it could be that they're examples of Pokémon which only recently evolved such traits. Alternately, you could view them as gaining control over plants, making more of a "magical power" akin to most psychic and some fire types (Delphox being an example of the latter).

  • @jaernihiltheus7817

    My personal theory for leaf stones (and ice stones) is that they are shaved off portions of the mossy rocks (and icy rocks) found in sinnoh.
    This would explain why leafeon (and glaceon) evolve with its respective stones from gen 7 onwards, as opposed to their original forms.
    This would also explain the urban encroachment theory here. As oddish and bellsprout could be there because, prior to cerulean's establishment, there were mossy rocks there that would allow their stone evolutions to happen naturally. But with the rocks mined to extinction in the area - the only way to evolve them now is from the mined (aka manmade) leafstones. Mostly staying in their unevolved states except for the rare leafstone that "grows" somewhere nearby.
    This would make a thunder, fire, water, dawn, dusk, sun, moon, and shiny "rock" a thing too, but we have no evidence for that.

  • @mist8513
    @mist8513 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've always been fascinated with the relationship between Pokemon battling and evolution, particularly the tendency for higher evolved forms to look more intimidating, regardless of ecological niche or personal preference for fighting.
    Along those lines, I think Cerulean Cave may be an example of just how strongly Pokemon training can pervert the "natural" or expected ecosystem. It may be that the Pokemon that live there are simply abandoned Pokemon that have developed a strong desire for battle as a result of Pokemon training, and they head there because there is simply nowhere else in the wild of Kanto that offers that kind of bloodsport.
    This is dipping more into general narrative than ecology, but worth noting is that both RBY and GSC end with the same "King of Nothing" esque final challenge, with both games having you face down a silent, abnormally powerful opponent at the very end of a cave. In Mewtwo's case it is heavily implied that it was brought to life as a result of humans desiring an extremely powerful Pokemon, whereas Red beat the toughest test of wilderness survival and competitive spirit that Kanto would likely ever concieve while he was just a kid. In both cases they seem to be anomalies of force, which you'd think would net them great reward, and yet they're just sitting around in a survivalist's nightmare. The authorial implications of this are really bizarre for a series that is essentially a big merchandising front. The least discrepant interpretation is that it's saying too much power can leave you very bored, which is kind of surreal for a game series that displays relative power with a number that is visible at all times and promises great reward for making the number larger.

    Cerulean cave could have many implications, I'll discuss a few potential reasons the mons there are all so powerful:
    1. They are all powerful clones, like Mewtwo. Thus, they live in harmony with each other away from their human creators. (The Pokemon Movie Conjecture)
    2. Mewtwo sates its lust for battle by fighting these other pokemon, and deliberately lets them live, either to retain strong challenges or for some other reason. (The Warrior Conjecture)
    3. Pokemon tend to be more powerful in regions untouched by human civilization; ergo the presence of humans causes Pokemon to be more docile than normal. Weak Pokemon can thrive off of the benefits of human proximity such as food, Pokemon Centers, and Strong Pokemon might endanger humans, which would cause them to be eliminated by strong trainers (The Legends Arceus Conjecture, named due to Pokemon generally being more dangerous in that game where human civilization is much weaker)
    4. Cerulean cave has some sort of attribute which draws in strong, rare Pokemon, some resource exists that Pokemon crave, yet only the strongest can survive the area of such high demand (The Crucible conjecture)

    - I am not considering a specific area
    - I take types as a physical building block and symmetric element of the world
    - I look a lot at different kinds of evolution lines, different levels of supposed awareness based on the designs and on egggroups
    - I changed predation with a need for experience from fights since it is more in line with the child friendly anime motive but keeps the same dependencies.
    - my goal is a simulation (or game) where individuals, teams and groups of pokemon "live" with plants and biomes based on type-synergies and to observe the emerging patterns.

    I think people arrived at Types for categorization through what is important to survival: resistances, aka what can you take without being damaged, and weaknesses, what is damaging to you.
    The people of the Pokemon world didn't categorize Bug in the same way humans did biologically. Why categorize Krabby as a Bug type if it would take more damage from Electric and Grass type attacks unlike all the other bug types? And Spinarak would count as a Bug type because even if it's biologically different, it still takes more damage from Fire and Rock attacks.

    Weepingbell on the other hand learns wrap n vine whip (in anime) to get a hold of their prey when hunting n then eat them whole like a snake or pitcher plant also that’s y they don’t have teeth.
    Lol

    You forgot to mention the picture of mewtwo in bills old mansion door.
    Was the door built b4 mewtwo was created or was it after?
    Also then was mewtwo more prevalent b4?

    Love this series and this video but very confused as to why you think Mewtwo wasn't genetically "born" from Mew's DNA. This isn't even something from the anime/movie, it's all spelled out in the game its self and 100% in game canon within red/blue and fr/lg. Mewtwo just chose to hide deep in the cave to stay away from humans. But, I digress.

    But, why use only typing when egg group exists?

      I've already discussed egg groups in my video on Pokémon reproduction. The short of it is that I don't think egg groups show phylogenetic relatedness, instead showing physical and behavioral capacity for reproduction. This explains why flying includes both birds and bats or water 1 containing fish and aquatic mammals.
      However, I probably should have acknowledged egg groups, at least in passing.
