    I love CoC for so many reasons. Several reasons are covered by you in this review in fact.
    CoC is a perfect game to take a break from D&D. The play style of CoC features so many differences that there is minimal overlap with D&D, but playing CoC will make you a better role player which is something that you can take back to your D&D game.

    The Starter Set containing a solo adventure was a brilliant move. Nearly everyone I've loaned my set to and let them run through Flames solo got hooked.

    I'm really enjoying the system here and I think it's among the best created. It's good to see these great materials to get the attention and accolades it deserves. I've been using the rules included with the starter set and it's been a lot of fun. Thanks for taking the time.

    Woot!!!! more Call of Cthulhu stuff great job reviewing it's also one of my fav. systems and games and you may roll different dice but it uses the same as D&D ohh one thing you missed about the Investigators Handbook is it's a great 1920's era source book lots of History about the time period other than that the whole review was very informative.

    I'm loving CoC. I can't wait to finish my DnD campaign in order to switch.

      I’m in the same boat. Looked into it, picked up the starter set, and got hooked. It’s nice and fresh and quickly becoming my favourite

    I introduced my gaming group to CoC with the haunting scenario. They did the full pre-house investigation. After the first encounter in the basement and their second trip to the hospital, they quit the job, retired their investigators back to the farm and announced they wanted to go back to dnd exclusively. I guess I can stop prepping edge of darkness and among the ancient trees..

      That's really unfortunate to hear. The groups I have run CoC for absolutely loved it, even the ones who are hardcore D&D fans.

    • @drmann15

      To be completely honest, everyone did a great job getting into character and we had a blast. It’s just that dnd every two weeks is pretty much the most everyone can schedule around work and family right now

    • @DravenSwiftbow
      @DravenSwiftbow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's understandable.

    Excellent overview. I'm not big into Cosmic Horror, but I've never said no to a Cthulhu game. Totally different vibe from the usual hack & slash fantasy games.

      It is, and for me was a much needed change of pace. I was running 4 different games and they were all built around combat. Everything blurred together and I was struggling to keep everything apart. I love the other systems, don't get me wrong, but I needed the break form constant battles.

    A tip on putting all the stuff and the Keeper screen back into the cardboard sleeve. Insert the cover sheet inside first so it doesn't get stuck on the cardboard below. Bundle up inserts and slide inside. Thing drove me nuts for a minute. Fantastic item seriously.

    I have the 6th edition which is fairly compatible with 7th (most of the editions are pretty compatible). I'm thinking about getting the Cthulhu by Gaslight book which covers playing the game in a late-Victorian, 1890s foggy London setting. It's Sherlock Holmes, Jack the Ripper, Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Allan Quatermain, HG Wells, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Dracula.

    Dave have you ever listened to "The call" it's an actual play podcast for COC. (They also do a starfinder actual play.) Major spoilers also did an excellent small campaign which I think is my favourite actual play podcast of coc ever, worth finding.
    I love chaosiums approach to product. They are so much better than wizards. Loads of hand outs, pregens, and one off adventures that you can actually pick up and play (even yawning portal or ghosts of salt marsh weren't quite as accessible as was promised).
    I love COC. Recent convert. Bought all the books within about a month!
    Great content Dave. :)

    To better explain the skillcheck skill leveling
    Skill = lets say 70/100
    Wich means you have 70% chance rolling succes (percentile roll 1-69)
    To level up the skill you only have 30% chance.
    The better you are at a skill, the harder to learn new things.

    • @DravenSwiftbow
      @DravenSwiftbow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tying the skill value is also a success so rolling 1-70 using the above example would be a success, other than that your explanation was fantastic.

    Big fan of your content and call of cthullu. Just a suggestion. While pricy there are very few overviews/reviews of the new version of Masks of Nyarlathotep and that set is amazing in terms of quality and story. So I would love to see your take on it

      @@DravenSwiftbow excellent I'm a third of the way through running it loving it., Additionally, picked up the prop set for when I run it again. Those props are dope but definitely a luxury upgrade.

    The best ones are "out of the aeons" "call of cthulhu" "nameless city" and "at the mountains of madness" and maybe "the haunter in darkness"

    10:05 *Did I bring my gun with me*
    Shouldn't the player be able to just... bring their gun with them? I mean, if I were investigating the occult I would keep a firearm on me at all times, even if it were just a pistol for backup.

    • @DravenSwiftbow
      @DravenSwiftbow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the set up and situation. In one game I was running the Investigators were traveling in a vehicle provided to them by a Professor at Miskatonic University. Only one of the character's actually had a weapon on them so a luck roll was used to see if there may have been a rifle or some other weapon in the trunk.
      Once the campaign gets going it is easier to assume the increasingly paranoid investigators would be armed at all times, but not so much early on.

    • @Disthron
      @Disthron 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DravenSwiftbow Also, depending on what kind of character you are playing. You might be armed as a matter of course. I've been playing through the recent Call of Cthulu game and was very perturbed that my hard-boiled private eye didn't have at least a sidearm... then he pulled one out in a cutscene and I was like... where was that before?!

    Have you tried any of the call of cthulhu modern adventures? While I love the 20's stuff some of the modern stuff is pretty good too. There was a modern adventure put out for free rpg day a few years back and you can still get it in print from lulu.com it's called the derelict and revolves around a abandoned boat.

    • @DravenSwiftbow
      @DravenSwiftbow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nothing recently, though the D20 Call of Cthulhu was primarily set in the modern day. I do have the D20 Nocturnum campaign though if I ever do decide to run current day in CoC

    • @dangarthemighty0980
      @dangarthemighty0980 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well there are also a lot of older scenarios out there for 20's as well that are very easy to convert to the new edition my favorite book is mansions of madness.

      I also own Horror on the Orient Express which is huge and very daunting to run for beginning keepers. Also really expensive it's a box set comes with props too.

    I got the the starter set, and ended up not liking it. Not sure what to do with it. I played Alone Against the Flames, and it was not really good. I still don't know hoe to play the game, and the rule set include feels more like a rule refrence then to actually play from it. I have no idea it I missed something, but I am left still not knowing if I want to ivest in the full game.😕

    Can I run my 6th edition Masks, Orient Express or Tatters of the King? Have you checked out Pendragon? Its very comparable to CoC rulewise but used a D20.

    • @DravenSwiftbow
      @DravenSwiftbow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't heard of Pendragon, but I will have to look it up. From my understanding 7th Edition CoC is backwards compatible with previous editions, though some conversion may need to be done. Other than the d20 version (which is not compatible) 7th Edition it the only Call of Cthulhu ruleset that I own. I've honestly never even seen any of the earlier editions.

    • @Infyra
      @Infyra 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DravenSwiftbow I you like arthurian legend, I think Pendragon is worth it, The Great Pendragon Campaign book is one of the best RPG books ever written IMO. You play a dynasty of characters over a I think 80 year period, and you will see you fortunes of your family change over time, you might end up playing the grandson of your first character by the end of the campaign.

      @@DravenSwiftbowIt still would have been nice, since you had the screen and other items right there, you could have displayed them and shown what you were talking about (that is the reason it is a video, otherwise you could have just posted a picture of the covers of the books (since that is all we could see anyway).
