That was the best war story I've ever heard! I laughed so hard at the scene towards the end where the airplane pilot ran away! Pure gold!

I only wonder what that scenario Greg intended to run was all about.

I once had the pleasure of playing in a game with you and Larry at a convention. it went very much like the game you described here except we ended up being killed by an invisible swinging ball/blade in an open field and our very first encounter. I haven't laughed so hard since. Afterwards we went across the street to Denny's and the waitress could not stop staring at Larry's t-shirt, which was understandable since it had three arm holes. I think this was in the '80s or early 90s. It was a pleasure meeting you in person as well as Larry who as you said was one of the funniest people I ever had the pleasure of meeting. it very much appreciated the fact that you guys are willing to play a game with someone you never met before and being so kind. to this day I wonder what the hell that invisible thing that killed us all was.

What a great anecdote! Laughed a lot at how it got derailed...
I've experienced times when I prepped for days for an adventure and my players derailed it so hard... One instance, we were playing 3.5e Eberron I had just finished Half-Life 2, and wanted to do Ranvenholm-ish scenario... Created specific monsters that worked like headcrabs, made a map of the town, created a Cultist spellcaster monster that commanded the crabs, side-encounters with surivivors, and a lot of stuff (worked like 3 weeks for it) and the party got stuck in town because someone had stolen part of the conductor stones of the railway tracks, so they needed to cross the town, to get replacements from some deposit, get back to the train and ride it to their destination... When they saw the state of the town, they just ran out of town following the tracks and made a huge round-bout hike to avoid town and spent like 3 more weeks than planned to get were they were going (they got late and their objective was thwarted, but I got really mad that time losing all that work)...
Also, they had derailed the previous quest i had planned (that was about spying into the magic department of the University, because one of the characters was LG and was not okay on that... and since it was kind of the leader...
Man that party p#ssed me off... XD

I'm gonna be honest, I have a woefully incompetent grasp of the game's rules at best. I just pick some evil culty stuff, pick some cool monsters, and try to remember little-known unimportant rules like "turn order," "sanity checks," or whatever the heck "narrative pacing" is.
Somehow, it's going well and we're having fun, even with my pants-on-head handling of the game. I think we're just glad to have something simpler and different from D&D, and people seem to really like "use your brain and problem solving" over "roll a number." It makes them feel like they're a part of the story, and not piloting an 8th level warrior.
Thanks for making a cool game and not bowdlerizing Lovecraft like WotC did with D&D. Also when I told a friend that you worked on 7th Edition he was like "WAIT YOU MEAN THE DOOM GUY?!" That was funny. I wish you many long and happy years.

Hey Sandy, was there every a particular reason you guys came up with for why all of the various Mythos races and gods in Shadows of Yog-Sothoth are working so hard to raise Cthulhu?
It's probably my only real quibble with the campaign is that aspect and I'm planning on running my players through it as a sort of "farewell" for the campaign we've run for nearly a year now.
The only reason I've been able to come up with is when Cthulhu rises all hell will break loose as the sort of "masquerade" several of the Elder Gods have been doing to conceal those under their sway (shub-niggurath for example in Thing at the Doorstep with the
"pits of Shoggoths", the town of Innsmouth with its deep sea city) largely from other groups/cults moreso than anything.
We see in Whisperer in Darkness (although it may be a lie of the Fungi from Yuggoth) that these cults clearly come into conflict normally so why would some of them work together toward this singular goal, or at the very least why would all of these alien RACES work together or at least all these human cults be working toward the same goal?
The goals of the gods can be unknowable but the goals of the cults themselves? That's something we should know if we're running it.

A out of context question. Do you think that the crawling chaos in cthulhu wars could use a buff? Yes hes super mobile yes he has ways to generate power but 1 bad turn (losing nyarlathotep or being immobile for some time aka spending a lot of power on spellbooks) and hes out of the game. What do you think?

    • @SandyofCthulhu

absolutely not if we go by how fun he is to play and his win ratio (which is high). Heck, he's Graywizardgaming's favorite GOO.

Hey sandy, I'm wanting to go into game design and you're a huge inspiration to me. Could you give me some advice on creating my murder mystery/rpg game called "the slicers of Durham cathedral" about a Deep one splinter who attack suddenly around Durham cathedral in England (my local cathedral). The players operate as a group of modern MI5 investigators who are tasked with finding the cause of and stopping a series seemingly "inexplicable" ongoing murders.

    • @SandyofCthulhu
      @SandyofCthulhu  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

A comments section doesn't really seem like the best way of getting it done. My first idea for you is give the players each backgrounds that give them important reasons to keep their intentions secret from each other. Example: one is a Deep One spawn; another is an agent of the Yellow Sign who wants to stop the Deep Ones, but is still evil; yet another is a rogue government agent who is trying to make contact. etc.
