      @@RandomPlaceHolderName He is just being humble, Duncan no doubt had a great career, coach and longevity, but if he was matched up one on one with Chuck in his prime he would have gotten dominated. It was like Bill Walton said, Barkley and Jordan do not play positions, they play basketball. Charles could shoot the mid range shot, could take it coast to coast and could post up on anyone. He gets knocked sometimes for his perimeter defense, but when you are one of the best offensive rebounders of all time you should get a pass. No better defense than not letting the other team get the ball.

      @@powerboatguy2308 that's debatable. For one, I dont even like putting Duncan in the greatest pf conversation cuz he played just as much center as he did power forward, especially defensively. The Suns came to OKC to play an exhibition game and my older brother and I went to the game. Chuck tore up the court and then gave his shoes out to some kid in the audience. 10 years later Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and OKC got to host the Hornets for two years. The rest is history. Barkley never had such team mates. What impressed me most from him is that he was everywhere doing everything the full game. The Celtics went from 28W / 53L in the '79 season to 61W / 21L in the '80 season. The additional new players in the team were M. L. Carr, who started in 7 games, Gerald Henderson, who started in 2, and Eric Fernstein, who started in none. Bird's Celtics were amazing, it's amazing they weren't winning before Bird joined, even with Pistol Pete and Bob McAdoo on their roster.
      Sure, you could argue Cedric Maxwell was a great player, and that Bird didn't win a ring until he got McHale and Parish in as support. But Bird alone, as a rookie, made a 33 win difference for the Celtics, in spite of the team's formerly best players Pete and McAdoo leaving the team.
      Charles Barkley was a great player, and him joining the 76ers helped them go from 52W / 30L to 58W / 24L, but Barkley joined a better team than the one Bird joined and his '84 76ers weren't as good a team as Bird's '79 Celtics were. Relative to their competition and slightly different (5 years) eras, yes, but nonetheless. Bird had to do everything, everywhere, just as much as Charles, and arguably did it better.
      My personal appreciation for Barkley is his good humor and positive vibes, rather than everything else - while on the Dream Team, he ignored security, went out into "hostile" territory and made the entire world embrace and cheer for him and team USA. That's what makes me want Sir Charles on my all-time dream team. Alongside Larry Bird, of course.

    I absolutely agree! When the Knicks won their first chip, they had five top players who played together unselfishly. In the 1973 season, Earl "The Pearl" Monroe teamed up with Walt "Clyde" Frazier. The Boston Celtics won their early chips by having high quality players. Clyde Drexler didn't win a chip until he teamed up with Akeem Olajuwon. LeBron James won his two chips with Miami with Dwayne Wade by his side, and his chip in Cleveland having Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love with him. And recently, that's why Kevin Durant won a chip because he teamed up with Steph Curry and Draymond Green. It's true. Had Charles had at least one high caliber player alongside him, he's have won his share of championships!
    But let's all stop and think for a minute. We're talking about great players who never won championships. Let's remember that even just to put on a uniform and sit on an NBA bench, you have to have game! Let's not forget that.

    Just came across this channel with your Stockton video, and the next one I see is the Chuck one. Congrats, you've earned a new subscriber. Now, my thoughts:
    1) Barkley IS the greatest player to never win a ring.
    2) Barkley is also the greatest power forward to ever play the game. Yeah, yeah, Tim Duncan, blah blah blah. Other than the short period where he & the Admiral played alongside one another (and the Admiral still being the Admiral, not a shade of himself), Duncan always played the role of that traditional centers played, both offensively & defensively. I don't care that the SL said Matt Bonner (or whoever) was the center; they were really a stretch 4. But even if you say, okay, Duncan was a PF, he didn't come into the league in the middle of two great dynasties (Lakers & Celtics) and spend his prime in the middle of one of the greatest (Bulls). His career started the year after MJ retired. While I'm in no way diminishing Duncan as an all-time great, I just have never really considered him in the same category as I would Barkley, Mailman, McHale, etc.
    3) Part of the reason Barkley was so efficient scoring the basketball was his incredible post game. The only guys that I would immediately put ahead of him as better post scorers are Olajuwon & McHale, who both just had incredible moves, and Kareem, who had the greatest shot ever. But Barkley not only dominated scoring wise from the post, he completed decimated a defense from it. He got the best basketball play while commanding the post, often ending up getting a 20+-ft jumpshot for someone or a easy layup off of a back cut. As you said in the video, they literally changed the rules of the game because of him.
    4) Philly traded Moses, Toney got permanently hurt, and Doc got old ... think about how good those Sixer teams could have been had they not gone down that road! Phoenix had a potential game changer blooming in Richard Dumas who literally blew his career up his nose, KJ's size + style caught up with him and he was perpetually hurt, Dan Majerle was always overrated, and Chuck himself got hurt in the 2nd year with Phoenix... he just wasn't quite the same after that. Still, from 1988 to 1995, I'd say Barkley was the 2nd or 3rd best player in the league every season.
    5) Chuck led the greatest team ever assembled in the history of team sports in scoring. Most of those guys could, but he actually did.
    6) Barkley's defense has always been underrated. He was a good help defender, particularly in the first 5 or 6 years of his career, and when it got crunch time and the team needed a stop, he'd step up. Go back and re-watch that '93 playoff series vs the Spurs. Chuck is guarding David freaking Robinson, who is 8 inches taller than he is, and he's doing it well. Yeah, he definitely got lazy in the later days of his career, and yeah, he was much shorter than the guys he was guarding, which brings me to...
    7) 6'6"? More like 6'4". Playing nightly against guys half a foot taller than he was. Insane.
    Of course, most of this is just my opinion... but the first time I saw this guy grab a rebound, dribble down the court around, over, and through everyone, leap up and throw it down with two hands I said to myself, "Man, this fat kid can PLAY!"
    I wasn't wrong.

    He was one of those players who put everything on the court. He wore his heart on his sleeve. His play style was incredible, but did a number on his body. I can only imagine the pain he has played through. He was, literally, one or two pieces away from getting rings.
    Shaq... Not only did he have somr of the greatest players of all time on his teams. He had some of the greatest management and coaches as well. He was incredible as well, but his comments toward Charles are way over the top.

    Barkley is easily one of the most underrated ballers ever.
    To me it's a toss up between him and Malone.. Karl vas much more viable on defense, and possessed GOAT longevity. Charles was a more versatile deadlier yet amazingly more efficient scorer.
    Duncan is more of a center than power forward.

    • @solcreate490
      @solcreate490 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of the underrated aspects of Malone was that he was a fantastic post-sealer -- probably the best of his era -- and off-ball player. Barkley's iso scoring from the post could, at times, turn into a black hole situation. With Malone, the team offense tended to flow more smoothly.
      I also think that we tend to forget how inconsistent Barkley could be, even in the playoffs. In the 95 playoffs for instance, he had one basket -- one -- over the course of seven fourth quarters against Houston in the second round. That likely cost Phoenix the series (as well as his injury in the second half of game 7).

      The Malone vs Barkley debate is close and legitimate one. However. Charles can do one thing way more often than Karl could and that is create his own shot. Karl could not do that in half court game like Sir Charles could.

    Being a Sixer Fan and enjoyed watching Sir Charles Work & Play it was a dark day when he was traded away from the Sixers. I enjoyed you analogy of Sir Charles. He was a force to be reckoned with. Sadly although he never won a Championship he was a true Champion. As for his place in history there is no doubt he ranks high on the list and is grossly overlooked because of never winning a Championship.

    Like Kevin Durant who is a legit 7’0” but listed as only 6’9” ... Charles Barkley is really 6’4” as stated in his own book even though he was once listed as high as 6’7” as his “NBA height”
    What blows my mind is that he led the NBA several seasons in RPG at 6’4”
    Him and Rodman taught me that Height really means nothing in getting rebounds as long as you got heart, will, and knowledge on positioning where to be on the court.
    So theoretically, it’s possible for Isiah Thomas, Nate Robinson, Spudd Webb, Starks, or Mugsy Bogues to have led the NBA in rebounds against the giants they’ve played against in their careers if they willed it.

    Look, there's ONE reason Ewing, Malone, Stockton, & Barkley never had any rings as good as they all were: Jordan! If Shaq had been trying to get his rings in the 90's versus the 2000's, he wouldn't have any either!! It didn't seem to matter how good somebody was or who they had with them! So Kobe has nothing to do with Shaq getting his rings and Barkley not! Timing was everything here!!

    • @joelman1989
      @joelman1989 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Stonemansteve II I agree. I mean it is undeniable that Kobe and Shaq helped each other dominate the time they had together, in a way someone like AI never got a chance too during the same time period. But add the lack of star power to then have you come up against Jordan and Pippen every year... yeah there’s a problem there. It wasn’t just Jordan. Jordan the GOAT, also had an amazing team and management behind him. Something Barkley never had.

    • @come2morrow368
      @come2morrow368 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. But it wasn't just Jordan. It was Jordan and Pippen!. MJ had Pippen who he count-on to give him about 20 pts, 5 or 6 rbs, x number of steals and assists, and a lockdown defender. Ewing, Malone, Barkley, and Reggie Miller didn't have that 50 greatest player on their team. Shaq and Kobe....Kobe did everything MJ did and was equally competitive. I have been watch NBA since the late 60s, though I believe MJ is the greatest during his era and the current era, a prime Kobe wasn't....Hershey Hawkins, Steve Smith, Rolando Blackman, Dan Marlej, Mitch Richmond (who was awesome), and even Reggie Miller. He (Kobe) was better than these players and would have given MJ and Pippen fits offensively. I would say, of the Bulls' 6 championship, Shaq and Kobe, running the same Bulls" offense, would have probably won 2 or 3 of those Finals.

      @@come2morrow368 Lunacy!!! Every point Kobe would've put up Jordan would've made sure to put up 2!!! They wouldn't have had much of an answer at the center position, but the Bull's centers weren't bad. Absolute lunacy!!!

      @@Stevesrssrssrs We can agree to disagree. Kobe "did it" against better offensive and defensive players than MJ (list of name in my previous reply). I'm not saying Kobe was better than MJ. If MJ was 1, Kobe was was 1a. Also, remember the league favored MJ (Bird and Magic had gotten old), whereas during Kobe' tenure, the league ensured all the top players (handful) were favored.

    • @Stevesrssrssrs
      @Stevesrssrssrs 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@come2morrow368 Here's the problem. Yes, Kobe's game was modeled after Jordan's, modeled after, but not as good! The student did not surpass the master. And Jordan after '91, would not lose, he'd drop 70 if he had to!! And btw, Kobe is not 1a, he's in my top 15, but he's not in the top 10. Now I know some people do have Kobe in the top 10, but they're wrong. It's really as simple as that! Jordan could've had a 10-peat, (that's right) if he didn't retire/got suspended, and if the Bull's owner didn't trade everyone and dismantle the team in 1999! And had that happened, there would've been no Lakers championship in 2000!!

    I remember when Sir Charles and the Sixers took the Bulls to a game 7 in either 91 or 92. I sincerely believe that Sixers team was good enough to win an NBA title, but like a lot of other great teams from the 90s, they ran into a Phil Jackson coached Bulls team with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.
    I loved that Sixers team. Charles Barkley and Rick Mahorn (Thump & Bump) at front court, Hersey Hawkins and Johnny Dawkins made up the backcourt, with big Mike Giminski at center. They had epic battles with the Detroit “Bad Boys”. Thanks for the memories. Is it just me, or was the NBA way better from 88-98?
