As a USMC veteran and former Drill Instructor this Marine nailed it. There is a box we check in the first two weeks to find out leaders in the platoon. None of the herd know how to do anything but a few have that thing that shows the potential. Nice job Marine. Semper Fi.

Was Squad Leader in boot and Platoon and Squad Leader in SOI. Ooorah. Left boot as a PFC. It's worth it. Being an example and actually caring for those your leading is a must. If your doing it for yourself only then you might want to check why you want to be in this position. Everyone else will know.

My son is at MCRD San Diego week 7 as of now and has been a Squad Leader after 3 weeks. (youngest in his platoon at 17).
He was a poolie for 6 months. He became a guide right away. Excelled in that and did his own PTs. Requested to leave early to boot camp. Left in February instead of July. When he left he could do 22 pull ups and his mile and a half was 8 minutes and 30 seconds. He struggled the first 2 weeks mentally but worked through it and said he's having fun. We are so proud of him.

For our platoon the guide and squad leaders were picked on the way they marched and nothing else. Because marching is also a competition between platoons. There were recruits that were stronger, faster, knew more knowledge but you do really want a great marcher up front. Our guide was a mumbler, took 6 years to finish high school and an UNK but he could lean back, swing his arms perfectly and marched textbook.
At the end of my 4 years I was at mainside px and I ran into the guy who was our guide and he was still a LCPL and his mos was admin, while I was 1345 and a Corporal chasing E5 in charge of a platoon. He definitely wasn't a leader just a great marcher.

Funny. It’s so totally true how you can’t prepare. My friend who went in after my graduation, played off everything I was telling him, until he hit the ground at MCRD San Diego😝 but as for Squad leaders, I was fourth squad leader because I’m 6’6” and could March haha. We won every drill. It’s SO stressful during drill, because EVERYONE lines up to you, including the junior DI 🤯 #BeTall to be a squad leader 👍

Not necessarily, our scribe was honor man and he wasn’t a guide or squad leader but he stood out. He’d stay up at night helping clean rifles for inspections.
He’d help the slower guys study for tests on his free tome instead of writing letters. He did extra fire watch to make sure everything was right for the next day. Make sure you have a strong bladder because they don’t let you puss as punishment. Anyone that pissed their pants got recycled or put three weeks back. Remember the marines aren’t for everyone and ten percent don’t make it.

I went to Parris Island July 66. I had 6 or 7 squad leaders during the first month of boot camp. Some of them were shit canned within the first few hours on the job. I say never volunteer for anything. Just do your best all the time. Try as hard as you can on the classification testing. My Senior DI didn't know my name until our mos assignment. He said "Who the fuck is Pvt. Tresham? Get the f-ck up here. Why don't I know you. Where have you been hiding? I was assigned mos basic 4000 (data processing) and I had no idea what that was. I credit the fact that I took typing in high school with keeping my ass out of the jungle. Just do your best on every aspect of recruit training and maybe you'll be selected for squad leader or guide. The recruits who tried real hard to be squad leaders were usually fired from that position very quickly. Don't ever drop your rifle! Don't ever fall asleep during class.
