"We're going to give you 8 hours of sleep". Says no marine recruiter ever lol
Actually not counting receiving, guard duty, and your 5 days in the field and KP week (which they no longer do) you do get 8 hrs almost every other night...they want you to get 3 squares a day and 8 hrs sleep so they have a base to build on...Parris Island, 3rd Battalion, summer of '75.

or getting up on your own to study,work on uniform inspection prep,or simply to take a dump
or shower with a little privacy,you did get 8 hours of sleep. Boot Camp isn't Ranger School
where you are pushed to the limits of physical endurance.It's more of a exercise in developing
mental toughness.
8 hours of sleep? I was in the Army, but we never got 8 hours of sleep. Neither did the Marines I talked to. Things must have changed since then.
You will get eight hours of sleep alright. Over 2 to 3 days if you are lucky.

I’m in the air force and even we didn’t get 8 hours a night. More like a week. You guys have fire guard, we have entry controller. 2 hours gone from sleep right there. Wasn’t hard, but after 5 days in a row, it starts to get to you like pouring concrete down your head.

My dad was Air force, I was Army, and my son was Marine. Love and respect the service I do.
The Marine Corps is a brotherhood! Once a Marine you represent every Marine that came before you. We carry on our backs their legacy, their deaths and their Marine arrogance and we carry it for the rest of our lives. Like real brothers, their blood flows through our veins and when we go into battle, we would rather lay down our lives than be a disappointment to their sacrifices.

Best advice I ever had was from my dad. Keep your mouth shut and don’t volunteer for anything. Do what you’re told. You’ll be fine. MCRD San Diego ‘79.

My 2 or 3 piece advice: 1) Do your job [and] 2) Do it right 3) Never trust the system.
I graduated from Parris Island in 1964 and women trained way off in a separate area from the men. What is it like now? Do women train side by side with male recruits in things like PT, close order drill, and the Crucible? (We had no Crucible in my day.) What about at the rifle range? My advice to any who plan to join is that they slim down and be able to run 3 miles nonstop in Combat Boots (bought at an Army/Navy surplus store), do 35 push-ups, 10 pull-ups, 50 sit-ups, and 15 deep knee bends. No need to be a Mr. or Miss America in terms of physical fitness. Semper Fi!

How was it man?
I didn't watch the video, just wanted to pass along my Receiving experiences back in '75 at Parris Island. My Recruiter's only advice was "when you get to Parris Island the shit is going to hit the fan, just keep you mouth shut and do what you ae told as fast as you humanly can"....I thought Hmm, that sounds okay. So it's zero dark thirty and our Greyhound bus (mostly civilians maybe 15 "Marines") stops in the middle of F'n no where and the bus driver announces Okay this is Parris Island all Marines deboard...we stumble out half asleep. Back then there was just a small MP shack on the mainland...a couple of the recruits tried to ask the MP's what we're supposed to do and they ignored us, finally an MP said shut the fuck up and just stand there. About 20 minutes later a van arrives with an old black civilian driving it...he was cool and told us boys if you have any candy or gum or cigarettes better use them now and then leave any leftovers in the van. He dropped us at the yellow foot prints with DI's screaming. I'm standing on the footprints with all hell breaking loose all around me, for what appears people that just won't keep their mouths shut and I'm thinking hey my Recruiter was right, as long as I keep my mouth shut it'll be okay....Just as I was finishing that sentence in my mind I felt my head jerk back roughly from a DI pulling my neck length hair...he leans into my ear and in the meanest whisper I'd ever heard in my life said/growled "Get your fucking hands out of your goddamn pockets long hair"...I knew right then these guys were deadly serious and I was in big trouble. In the hell hole known as Receiving they started by running us up and down the stairs from one side of the barracks to the other, when recruits started falling they'd take us down stairs and put us on our knees with our hands behind our backs lined up beside long tables, bent over so our noses would just touch the table...it was an ingenious torture device that soon had your lower back and neck screaming in pain...a DI walked around the tables with a riding crop in his hand...if anyone either laid their head down or picked it up to relive the pain you'd hear a loud WHACK/Aaahhh as the DI would hit the recruit. After that got too boring they'd stand us up at attention along the walls and just watch us/yell at us for perceived short comings...once in a while you'd hear a THUMP as a recruit hit the floor, the DI's would quickly snap what I took to be a smelling salt capsule under his nose and roughly stand him back up with a not so gentle reminder not to lock your knees...it was during one of these sessions that a recruit just a few feet to my right stepped out of the line and announced "My name is so and so and my father is congressman so and so and I have changed my mind I no longer want to continue and would like to speak to the commanding officer"...as soon as the kid opened his pie hole two DI's were front and center in his grill but let him finish his speech...I was pretty stunned by the whole thing and as I said he was standing just to my right so I had a front row seat and was ...I was wondering what would happen and didn't have to wait long to find out...as soon as the recruit stopped his speech the two D's looked at each other and in unison broke out into evil laughs, which lasted about 2 heart beats, then while one grabbed the kid by the shoulders the other one punched him HARD in the stomach and they both slammed the kid back against the wall and one said "Shut the fuck up, you aren't going anywhere". The kid never said another peep. I never saw him again with the whirlwind of Receiving and he must have gone to a different platoon, but my money would be on him being an early drop. I have a couple more Receiving stories but will tell just this one, it's the haircut story. Not sure how or when this changed but we didn't get our first haircut in the barbershop like is always depicted in the youtube videos and the movies...there was a small abandoned looking concrete room not far from the receiving barracks (I was pretty disoriented and went to 3rd battalion so am not real clear where it was, but I think it was to the right of the chow hall when looking from the receiving barracks (which were still the wooden WWII barracks)...anyway it was like a bare concrete room about 10 x 10, no windows, with a bare light bulb dangling from the ceiling, we were roughly "marched" 2x2 into the room and there was a large steel garbage can sitting under the dangling light bulb with two barbers standing n either side of sad can...the DI"s were screaming...Bend your head over the fucking trash can. IF you have any moles you better put a fuckin finger in it or they'll get shaved off....just a bit more indignation...again I have no idea why our hair cut was such a brutal experience, but it seemed to fit in with how boot was back in the day...
Thanks for the story, that gives me a heads up about my great grandfather's service, my great grandfather built the Barracks some time after ww2, but he wasn't very open about his military service so I was in the dark about when what happened, it wasn't easy even finding that out.

The DI's will get you through Boot Camp as long as you don't give up. Just get used to
a little denial when the DI's are taking chow off your tray while the skinny guy next to
you is eating double rations.
They take food off your tray? Calorie deprivation with that work load will cause the body to deteriorate its muscle mass, thus getting progressively weaker and increasing chances for injury.

Yes, I was one of those individuals that cried happy tears while trying not to break my bearing when I received the EGA. November 10th is the USMC birthday, but August 31st is the day I became a Marine... and I celebrate both. YUT!!!

My son left May 24th for San Diego he was in the DEP program for a year before leaving and he told me he's glad he was cause he didn't think he would have made it if he didn't get the training the recruiting officers put him through.

I couldn't imagine the job of drill instructors and recruiters nowadays I see it on my job everyday today's youth are really struggling with the basic fundamentals that I was taught an early age. And I haven't even talked about the mental and physical aspect. Hats off to them.

what they don't tell you about in this video would be that they are many DI's down there that abuse the shit out of their power, take away meals, head calls, etc getting 2 second showers, going on power trips.. My senior DI was still using day one training methodologies while we were in phase 3. lots and lots of tearing down and very very very little of building up. Oh, and be prepared for you platoon mates to turn into brown nosing little backstabbers. they'll rat you out for the tiniest things to try to get in good with the DIs. don't get me wrong, you could have an easy time in bootcamp depending on who you get as DI's.. but you re just as likely to get the biggest fucking douchebags for DIs who don't give a fuck about training you, but rather enjoy playing god.

Matt Canon Reports? By whom? Me? my platoonmates? hah! like any of the recruits would "report" our DIs. They had us scared shitless, everything they did we accepted, because we thought that they had that power. . The Company Commander questioned different recruits on a few occasions but for reasons I do not know. nothing came of it either, as far as I know, nobody outside the platoon knew about missing meals, withheld headcalls, and 2 second showers. If any of the higher ups did, no actions were taken to improve anything. Our Senior DI was with us until the end, his antics always hounding us. And no, I'm not exaggerating. that shit was just the tip of the iceberg.

I don't know, it's hard to talk about it, just because the difference between your "Army" and mine is big. Our DI's were also hard, I can imagine they were harder at my friend (he was in a special forces regiment in the infantry). Our Company Commander was an "iceman", but he was well-balanced, if you had any problems, he took you out and talked to you, face to face, as long you don't report useless stuff "Captain, our platoonleader let us do too many push-ups wah wah".
What about higher commanders? I remember an elder Warrant Officer, he was badass and very strict, but he also had a "human side".
I guess your DI's had more power than they should have (IMO).
I'm not overexxagerating either, we weren't pussies neither. But our Commander told us, that we can report anyone that doesn't let allow us to eat our meal. "No food, no battle."
The quickest way to end, "abuse of power" is a letter to your folks. The Series and Company
Commander will have to do something of a Congressman gets a call from a worried
mother and calls to the Recruit Depot wanting some answers.
A lot of times the issue of 'ABUSE" is determined by the maturity level of the recruits
in a platoon. Younger Recruits fresh out of High School during the summer are more
apt to accept any behavior from a DI as authorized. The recruits during the winter
and spring tend to be older and are able to see the difference between training
and abuse.Most DI's are smart enough to know the nature of the recruits they
have in their charge and what they can get away with in walking right up to the
line between tough training and being abusive.
Sure,I remember missing a meal or two(more like getting back up before finishing the entree) in Boot,
but I don't recall being hungry. I also recall being denied a head call or two but never pissing on myself.
I did get told to get off the shiter before a PT run because we were told to only take a Number One
and not a Number 2 before running.I didn't specifically request a Number 2 so that was that.
I never made the mistake of not asking permission to do so if I felt I needed it, after that.
The worst I remember is being denied a head call,then going back to the DI TO REQUEST AN EMERGENCY
HEAD CALL and being told to run to the head while making the sound of a Police car/Fire engine
going to a Code 3 call.
Nobody in my platoon shat or pissed themselves due to not getting to the head if they made it know
they really had to go. I also recall getting a 2 second shower every now and then.
But that really didn't bother me because you are free to get a shower every night during your free time
before bed or get up during the night.
We also had the interviews by the Series and Company commander's and one of our guys
actually did report abuse.(Being hit by the DI) Of course nobody else backed him after the Senior
DI gave us a long speech about being a rat and they didn't punch us,just gave us a forearm
shiver or had another recruit smack the back of your head by being commanded to raise his hand
then bring it down on the top of the target recruits head a few times.
If the recruit told,he would then be ratting out his platoon mate who was being forced to smack you.
Hell,in third phase,my Senior DI put his NCO sword tip under my chin and forced me up on my tip toes
for 5 minutes because I was fucking up his Final Drill prep (I was) so looking back I don't hold it against
him.
We also played the drink water from a canteen in the name of hydrating until everybody puked.
Sure they are PHUC PHUC games and they really suck doing them in third phase,but I never
felt my safety or life was endangered.
I never was hurt or saw another recruit actually get injured by a DI's actions during
Boot Camp and when it was over, I shook their hands.To this day,I still actually laugh
at the DI's antics.

Marines bootcamp is the toughest 1 of all. 10+ years ago, I almost signed up to become a marine. After going back & forth, nothing was signed. A few yrs after that, I enlisted in the Navy. Did my 4 active yrs and got out in 2013

One thing I wish I could have changed, was while in high school taking p.e. classes a little more seriously and taking like track&field or some other sports... I honestly hated running, but after boot and got into active duty, loved it.. still wish I could.. (US Army, ret)

I can’t wait to enlist. Ever since I was 6 years old I’ve aspired to become a marine and I’m now 19 years old and I need to have a tattoo removed from the back of my neck and my ears sewn up. The tattoo is nearly gone and I get more and more excited everyday realizing how close I am to step in those yellow footprints. There is no bar two high! Two years ago my house burned to the ground and I saved my family and I knew that I was destined to make something great out of my life and I’m determined to earn the title of a United States Marine, is there any greater honor?

For the past couple of years I've been thinking about joining the marines after college but I'm still worried I don't have what it physically takes. I used to be underweight and I've been working over the past 2 years to gain a lot of weight. I'm 6'0 and 155 pounds and consider myself to be fairly in shape but I'm still worried about my weight

I believe the minimum requirement is only 3. I'm at an average level of physical fitness, and I'm able to do about 10.
C. Venom Same the most pullups i've done is 12 and chin-ups about 15.

Man I really really wanna join the Marines but at the same time boot camp is just too challenging for me... Like the heights & that pull ups would be extremely hard I'm still deciding on if I should join the Army or the Marines but if I join the Marines it'll take longer for me to be ready :/ but my question is do the drill instructors build you up if you can't perform a task??
I graduated from bootcamp last week Friday, bootcamp is not hard physically, you barely pt in bootcamp, also females can do flex arm hangs or pull ups for pft. You just gotta train for pull ups. Also if you've never been yelled at or everything has been given to you in life than you're probably gonna have a ruff time at bootcamp. Believe it when they say bootcamp is 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical. You'll be drilling a lot and taking a lot of classes

The physical part is honestly not that demanding. You'll be running more than anything else you only need to do 2 pullups to qualify anyways but you don't want the DIs to be the ones "encouraging" you. As a matter of fact you want the least attention from DIs as possible lol your recruiters will be the ones to get you where you need to be because once you're in the DEP their job is to make sure you succeed through recruit training and they will mentor you.

Air Force if you have a sharp mind, Navy Seals if you're a tough cookie buy take BUD/s training first if going to seals. I've considered Seal Team 10 but probly not gonna happen

There is no reason to care or worry about what you get or how the training is at MCRD boot camp!! You're all in for a real treat from what you may hear.. Upon arrival the reality will become clear, but you have to get there first. Useless freakn worrying of sleep and food needs to be the last thing on your mind!!! If your unsure about becoming a Marine, the Corps isn't for you. The title of Marine is the only benefit offered, and it can only be earned. More sweat less blood. 0311Sgt01-05
"You dont join the marines..... YOU BECOME A MARINE!!!! OORAH!!!!" I had a old Vietnam vet that worked at a pizza place with me tell me that. It sticks with me. I told him "I want to join the marines" he made sure I knew that you dont join the marines, you become a marine.

Marines are the Best branch of the military Semper Fi! I went into the Marines right out of High school. It was the best choice I made.
Boot camp was hard nothing like kill hat walking around at night whispering things at you. SOI was harder and being deployed sucked more. But nothing compared to the fleet Hazing if you from the pre Madonna years you know what I’m talking about. Them SGT and SSGT in the chairs have probably never meet the pissed off Senior Lance Corporal or the over obsessed CPL in a vector unit.
I got hazed For not know the color of lipstick that female Marines could use. In my head I was like why the hell do I care but for some reason my squad leader thought I needed to know.
Bottom line pain retains and even after all the years of being out I still can name every street in Ramadi and know the nomenclature of every weapon in the 03 field.
I also would not trade my hard times for the soft times that have fallen on my Corps.

I always wanted to join the military Im super athletic the physical part would be cake, but my background always stopped me. Not criminal, just where I'm from and come from Muslim family I know how I would be treated.
As long as you're helping your team and not ISIS/Hamas/Taliban guys, they'll probably be pretty cool with it. And if you're joining the Corps, I doubt you'd be helping those aforementioned groups

I used to weigh 316 and currently weight around 220 at the moment and im also 17 6'0ft i've been trying to lose 20 more pounds to be available to join the Marines, can anyone give me any advice to cut that 20 pounds ?
Idk if you still need help, but try wrestling in your school and do bodybuilding build muscle. I recommend having a low carb diet and high protein diet.
