Back in 1977, there were not too many visitors unless your parents had money, i just remember getting ready to go to the San Diego Airport and flying back to Texas, locals didn't really like us and couldn't understand why, probably because of our short hair and Vietnam had just been over,

Congratulations to your new Marine and welcome to the family! Hes going to meet so many great fellow Marines from all over the country and build a bond that will never be broken. Stay motivated and take advantage of the many things the Marine Corps has to offer. If you get an opportunity that interests you, grab it as soon as you see it. Dont let them slip away because you may never see it again. I wish you the very best in your new journey as a Marine that you earned. Semper Fi! Watching the facial expression on your mother and father when they hugged you is beautiful, you can tell how immensely proud they are of you. They sent the Marine Corps their baby boy and in return they got a young man.

      Stephanie,
Your son will be alright. Always remind yourself, you left home and also went into the world as an adult, not a kid; regardless if you were ready or not, or what others believed. It is isn't about, "But he is my...Or I am his...". He needs to grow up, bottom line. Three months will fly by. For me, it was a small shocker and where I was actually more challenged was in Infantry School..Every year in the Marines is like a phase. My first was recruit training, recruiter's assistance, infantry school, and first deployment; second, was infantry squad leadership course & jungle training course; two & a half in, I was getting ready for my second six months deployment; last year, I transferred and deployed for a third time. If your son is going active duty, hopefully he will get a good MOS (Job) and duty station and advice him to save a consistent percentage of his paycheck. I met a few Marines that put their money away.

We didn't have any of this when I graduated in October of 1976. When I finished it was as if they wanted us to leave as soon as we could. No real family involvement, no demonstration of what we had become...very low morale back then. We were barely trained.

I graduated in 1956 and there was no ceremonial stuff at all. The last morning, our D.I. just said something like, "Okay, you're Marines now," and they gave us a couple of free hours (our first) to walk around the base before they shipped us off to Camp Pendleton for infantry training. Pendleton was kind of a continuation of boot camp, minus the close order drill. Mostly war games, but quite physical and you still had to put up with people yelling at you. I remember I was assigned a BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) and had to lug it around the whole time I was there. It was fun to fire but heavier than my trusty M1!

The Marine Corps established its infantry school in either 1954 or 1956. Before this, the basic training served as infantry training. Today, there is an MCT, Marine Combat Training course for POGs; Infantry MOSs go straight to infantry school. The Marine Corps has changed its school name. I don't understand what's with the Marines name obsession. It is an infantry school, move on.

The corps was a lot different when I came through in 1989! No knock to these young Marines. It just seems way more laxed now than then. There was no way we would have even imagined to remove any part of out uniform, let alone to put a child around our neck in a Marine corp uniform. I respect these young men for joining ….. but that was very unsat! We couldn’t even let no one touch out uniform rather it was on our body or hanging up. Because they did not earn the right to touch that particular uniform! All the smiling was a No,No, you saved it for in privet. When you were in that uniform you were a serious person about the business of the U.S. Marine Corps. Different times now. We may have changed but our enemies haven’t. They have become the feared now!
God bless the world and I pray for world peace. Bless these young Marines.

Tun Tavern, November 10, 1775. The first man signs his contract to enlist in the Continental Marines and steps outside. The second man does the same. The first man walks over to the second, puts his arm around the second's shoulders and says, "So let me tell you about the old Corps."

    • @d.rcarrera6599

You were going in as I was getting out. For me, I had one moment were I ask myself is this what I signed up for. After that moment, the remainder of my time, all I can say is through resiliency, fortitude, and personal discipline I made it as an Infantryman.. Deployments made the time fly. You have a point about the unsat part. But as long as they straighten up afterwards, is what matters. I never took it or made it into obsession. We were very regimented and it was challenging. I don't know what your MOS was; my MOS was Infantry 0311 and also, for about six months was with a Weapons Platoon as an 0351. I wish I would have also trained as an 0341, Infantry Mortar man. Cross training is the best way to learn different and develop new skills.

Tun Tavern, November 10, 1775. The first man signs his contract to enlist in the Continental Marines and steps outside. The second man does the same. The first man walks over to the second man, puts his arm around the second's shoulders and says, "So let me tell you about the old Corps."
