Brian May talks so affectionately about Freddie and the other band members, a lot of legendary guitarists would just talk about themselves but he’s obviously a warm and intelligent man, great insight into the recording
I imagine their mutual respect and admiration is part of what made them such an incredible band.

Thankfully it sounds like the masters and the digital copies on hard disk still exist. Still having *the* master copy is amazing, how many copies of the CD, vinyl and download have been bought, also the radio play is incredible.

its amazing to realize how complicated this song is and how much incredible amount of work went in to it. I bought that album in 1975, i was 13. I saw them 5 times in concert and they did this song perfect every time. Freddie was The Greatest Rock Singer of All Time.

You can't be serious. Freddies vocal range alone, not to mention the timing and complexity of the piano part without a click. This required superb musicianship.
Eh, that piano part is not particularly complex, fit for a beginner. But it is brilliant and beautiful.
If you want actual complex piano, have a listen to Liszt or Rachmaninoff, or even Chopin. Fantasie Impromptu is a good introduction I'd say.

Brian was faced with a Lot in '91, and went through a period of depression that, at it's worse, manifested itself with his own thoughts of wanting to drive off a Bridge. This went on for a few years until after Freddie's Sad, Sad passing, Thankfully he recovered but has always appeared to me as a Man , somewhat uncomfortable in his own skin. An amazing man really: Doctorate in Astro-physics, world-wide renown, nice guy and Luthier, May God bless him. My Favourite guitarist and I'm almost 60.

I might go further... I'm not aware of a more humble person with one tenth of this man's talent. I love the way he credits the other three with all the musicianship in the band. I re-watched Premiere Guitars rig rundown on Brian May, with his very droll guitar tech, and they also talk to Brian about the Red Special. That thing is astounding, his first and only hand-made guitar, built as a teenager, still in regular, hard use and never had anything done to it more major than re-finishing. He is an absolute one off, just like that guitar.

My parents didn't really care what I listened to as long as the volume was kept at a reasonable level. I usually would listen to music on headphones so I could blast it...Now I'm about 70-80% deaf in my right ear and about 20% deaf in my left. It would totally suck to be completely deaf...
Brian May is so cool. He's easily become one of my favorite guitar players over the years. He was never a flashy showman and always showed good taste in his soloing.

Bohemian Rhapsody is not only a rock and roll classic, its one of the greatest pieces of music ever written, and the idea of it is so unique and "out there", that it is fascinating to watch and listen to the creation of it.

Bohemian Rhapsody is the best song ever composed in the history of music by a human. Freedy was a genius. Nobody except Freddy can create such masterpiece of song. I get goosebumps by listening to the songs notes
It's a luxury to watch how a masterpiece was made.
Hearing it broken down to the bare bones really makes you appreciate the production value and the studio engineers who helped create this.
And also really realize how much the band learned to perfect their music- they reportedly did a lot of sound-mixing themselves, as you can see in action in a video of them recording We Are The Champions. Of course they couldn’t do everything, and the technicians behind their music worked wonders, but that perfectionist commitment to their art is commendable.
Brian is such a gentleman. He highlights all the other musicians contributions and understates his own. We all know, however, no May, no Queen.
I really think you can die peacefully after recording such a song. It feels like a troubled and rich and emotional life summed up in 6 minutes. Freddie wrote an opera for our modern era. God bless you, for ever and ever.

Yep, an incredible player. Watch those early live shows of Queen and watch his right hand finger plucking technique. It was masterful. He and Roger Taylor were just an utter powerhouse of a rhythm section.

Man, why I'm like hypnotized, every time i see Bohemian Rhapsody i just have to click.
This song alone seems more complex than today's average album lmao
Because it is much more complex. Today many producers save time by capturing one good take and then duplicating that take onto another track, that is maybe panned differently, and with 20 to 40 ms of delay difference. The result may sound nearly perfect, but it's just too perfect. Especially when using additional tools such as Melodyne. With Melodyne, you can take one good vocal track and spend 10 to 15 minutes create a perfect 10 party harmony. Again way too perfect. Then its all further destroyed by making it too much on time and too much in key. Mistakes are the key to creating accidental magic. Perfection, and crappy songwriting users similar shortcuts is killing modern music.

Tony I so agree with you, when I do my MIDI demo I do all kind of shit to fuck it up like vocal synth effect on drums and what not to make it sounds more human cause otherwise it's driving me nuts.
Honestly I had no idea the amount of work that went into this. I got that it was an intense song, but the double tracking and the choir style and cascading effects and layering - it's astounding. Geniuses, the lot of them. Makes me love the song that much more.
But let's talk about Deacy's sexy bass playing.

This song is musical architecture. It's a sonic painting. What creative vision Freddie had!! Also, I never realized how often Freddie changes the tonal key center throughout the song. When the vocals are removed, it's much more apparent. He used the lead and harmony vocals to transition smoothly into new keys and back again. when you track multiple parts and layer them like this its knows as 'multi-tracking', it has nothing to do with autotune, auto tune artificially corrects discrepancies in pitch in the recording of the performance.

In this case, layered multiple recordings are done to make the illusion of a big choir. In other cases Freddie used the double voice effect maybe because the effect he obtained was great. In conclusion it's not a matter of pitch or sound correction it is just true art.
It’s amazing to watch this in 2020 and see how a masterpiece like this song was literally created from scratch mixed and mastered mostly with analog devices and so few technology, for sure the best available at that time in studio, but compared today, it’s completely different, to see the work behind this. Something that can never happen again.

And that paper of Freddie's doodlings,was filled with Freddie's handwriting, and it was creating ,writing down ideas to one of the most iconic songs in rock music history. Triple whammy jackpot. That is a very important piece of Rock n Roll history .

Watching and listening to this video, one is in total awe of the complexity of arrangement and achievement in recording technology in order to make Bohemian Rhapsody a reality. But the real mind bender is knowing that Freddie heard all this in his head before the first note was even recorded to tape.
Listening to Brian explain how they made Bohemian Rhapsody just boggles the mind. You realize just how much work was involved in the recording of Bo Rhap. What a GENIUS Freddie was with the help of his buddies. Thanks for all this input, Brian.

the economies surrounding music production have been massively overhauled in the last 30 years, back then you wouldn't go through the trouble and cost of hiring a studio, mastering etc. unless you had really put in a lot of effort, now with the advent of midi sequencing, digtal audio workstations and advancement in home recording, along with the improvement in consumer-grade recording technology, almost anyone with a laptop and a microphone can record and entire album in their house, meaning that there isn't that much risk involved with recording if it isn't necessarily the best quality theoretically

This song, kinda scared me as a youngsta. I remember watching the video on Top Of The Pops, and being totally flummoxed. The only part I liked back then, was Brian's guitar solo which completely blew me away every single time.
I don't know what happened over the years, but this song probably planted a seed in my brain, because every time I hear it now, I'm almost in tears. Freddies vocals are absolutely absolutely absolutely amazing. I guess it's something one has to grow into maturity to be able to appreciate.
