I'll second that!! There seems to be an under lying misunderstanding that .... " theres nothing to it! Shoot some video, upload it, boom your a YT star" Obviously there is a lot more to it than that. Although Mya makes it look so easy....

Maya, thank you for this video, even though I'm three years along from its creation. I've watched many of your videos, going back to early videos to catch up on the part of your story that predates my discovery of your channel. And I have been following the work on Magic Carpet II from the beginning. I'm a writer (fiction) and once made my living with a camera and in a darkroom, so I have what is perhaps a unique lens for commenting on your creative endeavors. The combination of skills you've developed in filming and editing have led to your success. And the construction skills revealed in your videos have great value to would-be builders or re-builders (like me).

This is the best video I have ever seen. I have worked my entire life on straight commission. I understand your concerns. The important part. You have talent !. You play instruments, and you sing !. Does not get a whole lot better than that, and your boat is gorgeous ! It was very helpful. The finished results are great. The violin, singing, spear fishing, boat stuff !

It’s great to learn about what goes on behind the scenes. Some people might make the mistake of thinking that it’s effortless or that you’re privileged in some way without realizing how many hours of work it takes to produce quality content and that it has value. The sailing channels that I subscribe to are entertaining, educational and also part fantasy where I live vicariously through you and imagine what it would be like to be living on a boat and traveling.... but there’s also another important ingredient which is your personality and character as entertainers who sometimes reach celebrity status on TH-cam. Some channels have hundreds of thousand or millions of subscribers but it’s nice to support the smaller ones as if it’s a type of co-op or community funded lifestyle of like-minded people sharing in the adventure. I hope that your channel continues to grow.

The reason I watch your videos is they have balance in the subject matter, some on shore, underwater, music, sailing, and boat maintenance/repair. As a fellow sail boat owner/operator I'm biased toward boat related content, however I find the rest nicely done. I probably will never make you tube vids, but I can appreciate what all is involved in their production.

Maya this is an excellent and informative video. You have a lovely manner and a pleasant speaking voice. I have no intention of starting a youtube channel but I have always been interested in how its done and all the topics you went through one by one (that I would not have thought of) in a methodical and organized way. I am a sailor and I watch quite a few sailing channels. Yours is one of my very favourites. I love the artistic flare that carries through all your videos and the quiet gentle nature of the pair of you.
Please continue with your sailing life and of course the music must be mentioned too. Love your show. "Sailing round the world as slowly as possible" ( that really got me in). Well done.💙⛵😀🧡💛❤💙

Maya, I’ve been making short videos 4 about 4 years now about my adventures restoring & repairing sailboats in numerous locations (marinas & shipyards)! I’ve thought of trying 2 start a channel, but I just don’t know how! Ur video has inspired me 2 at least put 2gether what I have recorded so far! 4 different boat restorations in 4 different locations! From 23’ trailer sailer 2 a 50’ complete paint job resto! Mite make an interesting 30-40 minute video about life on the hard in the shipyard! Thanx! U & Aladino have given me inspiration 2 try sumthin new! Thanx 4 all ur videos! Magic Carpet II is looking awesome! 👌👍❤️

I watch a few channels on occasion, but only a few I consider worth going out of the way for. Yours is one of those. Your natural skill and hours of practice on the violin shows, your love for what you do is obvious, your love for each other infectious, and your voice (Maya) is melodious, soothing, and sultry. Not to mention your sheer beauty. :-). When you combine all that, you have the goods to make up a great channel. I’m not a sailor, but I have seen every episode because you both make it interesting and entertaining.

Hey Maya - I never comment on videos, just isn't my thing, but the beginning of your video grabbed me because when talking about finding your story and being unique and who is going to watch and who isn't, you being a journalist and musician and your videos being slowly made, story telling driven, artistic -- That's exactly how I view Shauna and myself and wish more sailing channels considered, versus just random shots strung together with chitter chatter at the camera. So, thanks for being one of the story telling channels :-)

I’ve posted on several occasions how worthwhile your videos are. They often progress as if they are on clouds, spurred along by the very breezes that you capture in your wonderful narration. I love that your presentations are so pure, which is what I choose to believe you both are to your lifestyle. There are no innuendoes or questionable content or coarseness this makes for beguiling viewing, which I really appreciate and enjoy. Your style, honesty and choice of a presentation that presents as a classical, gentle and thoughtful story give you a unique selling proposition which is lovely to watch. Sailing Kawai has a similar natural, not forced content, as does Florence. Thank you so much, and well done.

Excellent! There are so many points that you have made here that we had to learn the hard way or at least through experience. We never set out to make money from our chanel, it was just for friends, family and our sailing clubs. We made quite an investment to be able to do this but, because we wanted to. Looking back we realise we were just doing that and video and production were not that important. However, when we started to get real subscriber numbers we started to focus more on all the things you talked about. We still dont make videos for income. But the very very little we get from YT does help and we now focus on the story or the technical aspects and its the latter that has been successful and boosted our numbers. Find your niche!!!! More than that we now get a lot of satisfaction from helping folks out and answering their questions on mechanical and electrical boat engineering. The how to series we started "boat electrical made easy" has really been such a joy to do and the feedback has been inspiring, motivating and just good fun. We are nowhere near in your league. And its not currently a "Job". While we would like to make a few more bucks to cover the time it's not an imperative. Having said that, you are in our opinion spot on. Its impressive to see some clear direction, guidance and well thought out strategy rather than the guff that is out there. As well as the sound technical information you two give. Your story goes on and we continue to be addicted to it, the mark of a good YT channel. Thank you for sharing honest and openly. Sail Safe. Ant, Cid & the Pooch crew.

Very good. I would add: A spouse/partner/shipmate(s) who are on board with video production. Showing both people in mostly equal time. I have seen youtube channels where the person doing the video never shows up on the video. This is ok for a talking head style, but not for sailing videos. You guys get this balance pretty good even if the editing part is mostly one sided. You have excellent audio quality and balance for your music. Mic placement is great and balance between instruments and voice is good.

@@SailingMagicCarpet We are the fans here!! hehehe We will definitely cross paths one day!! About our journey I would say the most important thing is to do what you love, be honest about it, believe on it and work really hard, but also to try to have some "strategy" because as weir as it can sound "the youtube sailing market" is saturated and if you are just one more channel doing the same thing I don't believe it is possible to make a living out of it. To be honest you mention on the video everything we believe is necessary, some key points, like consistency of content, not just in numbers of up-load but also trying to improve the storytelling with time, trying to find something unique on you own story on you own way of telling you story. Well we don't need to repeat, you said it all!! hehehe Stay safe guys!! Duca

The best piece of advice you gave was "What's your story". It doesn't matter it it's a how to, a travel log, or just documenting your day. What's the story, does it need to be told, and how can I say it more concisely. Those are all things you do very well.

Hi! Thank you, Maya and Aladino for the good quality enjoyable sailing and sight-seeing/travelogue videos. Thank you for creating and sharing this informative How-To video. It will be useful to many for its very genuine answers to what I think are very common questions. How much time? How much cost? How much income? What equipment is needed? You have created a twenty-five minute information-packed overview that I hope you may follow up with several topical videos including how to protect and share your music, creation of an additional You-Tube channel, fending for yourself or relying on expertise when needing to adapt or gain new equipment and tools and services, life-span of a commercial drone and when or how to decide to build your own. Suitability, the usability of a wind turbine for power generation. Water turbine. Solar-upgrade planning and how-to, and estimate return on investment of wind- water-turbine and solar for a blue-water sailing boat. I am signing up for the free Skillshare trial and anticipate I'll continue using that information source on an ongoing basis. Thanks for showing excellence in your creations. Tremendous delightful music, scripts, scenes, overall content. - Don D., B.S., C.I.S. always learning in central Phoenix Arizona

I'll be "Sailing Blue" sometime in the near future. So cool to see Odd Life Crafting commenting too - I am following them and the Yaba couple too, such lovely and interesting people to follow. And I'm now following You too.

Well done Maja. Yes running a YT channel is hard work - and I'm happy that I don't have to make my living with it. It is such a volatile income and I always felt better to have my hobby separated from my labour. And I'm lucky that I really love my job and it gives my enough oppertunities in time and money for my sailing. So I can only say I have a great respect to all the heart, sweet and dedication you both have put into you channel. I wish you the best and that you don't have to sell your heart for the money but can stay natural and fancy-free, enjoing you life and sailing and your dreams become true. LG Niko

    Great advice!
You are the best story teller, and I like your sailing channel the best!
I recommend putting the episode number in your video titles, if you're starting a channel (e.g. "eps. #23").

Thank you Giulio! I just went back and put episode numbers on all our videos from this year :) you can also always refer to the ‘watch from the beginning’ playlist on our channel which has all the episodes in order!! Thank you so much -Maya

Good video...I think you hit the nail on the head. TH-cam videos are most definitely NOT passive income. You skip a week or three, and your channel slides, a LOT! -Rebecca

Hi Maya, Great information. As a person that follows many channels I would like to add one other ingredient that makes for a successful channel. That is the likability of the people in it. You can have great content and editing, but if you don't feel a connection with the makers of the video you are not going to keep watching. Not every one of your videos is relevant to me for one reason or another, but I still enjoy and watch them because I genuinely think that your and Aladino are two very special people. For reasons I've told you before in other comments and won't repeat here I love being a small part of your journey. It's very nice to know that there are wonderful people like you in the world. You obviously are very talented in many ways and do a wonderful job on your videos, but you are Aladino are the biggest draw for me. I think the world know that your story telling skills and narrations are on par with any professional production. You could do feature films or write a best selling book if that's what you choose to do. I'm a big fan and hope our paths cross one day on the water. Love you both. ❤️

Hi Maya, really enjoyed the behind the scenes look at making these videos. Your right, it has to be a labor of luv when it comes creating a video. Another channel that I watch started adding some Podcasts to their channel. He committed that there was minimal editing involved . Just a thought. Merry Christmas to you both.
