We were brought into the sailing world by Lady K. We went sailing and were hooked. We got our own sailboat a 1976 Pearson 26 and we got it free. Thank you Lady K for introducing us to this amazing world.

Well when you said (pull the trigger). Here’s my story , I’m 56 years old. I’ve wanted a sailboat since I was 10. I truly never believed it was a reachable goal.
What made me pull the trigger . My wife, She said. What exactly are you waiting for and what would you give to do this? I never owned a sailboat. It was only a dream,
    I bought a 37c. Love your vids

And I meant unreachable. , and I left out an important part. , when she said. What are You willing to give. My answer was. I would give all I have to have a big sailboat

Nice job to your wife for supporting your dream! This sounds similar to our story. My husband has always felt more alive in the water but never owned a sailboat. He’s 51 and I finally said I want this, too! Let’s do it. He’s gone to sailing school, started as crew on a weekly race, we take out a friends boat occasionally and we will be buying a boat when he retires in two years. I’m not sure which of us is more excited.

@@wanderingmirecat4333 please please please. Hire a reputable professional surveyor. It is extremely easy to purchase a boat that has hidden damage that even the owner does not realize is present. It is also very easy to find FREE OR CHEEP BOATS that are very repairable for the average Joe.
Good used boats that require little work for cheep are available. The difference is knowing for sure what you have.

I started sailing almost 40 years ago in an 8' Snark Styrofoam boat and moved up to a Sunfish of my own. Eventually, my Uncle who taught me how to sail bought a 34' Hunter that I spent many weekends on in the Chesapeake. Now, after my home being for sale for a year and a half, I have a buyer in contract. I'm selling off all my "crap" except tools, fishing equipment, clothes and galley essentials and buying a 36' Watkins center cockpit of my very own. I am so stoked right now that the dream I've had since I was younger is finally coming true. There are many reasons why it took me so long, but I also needed a kick in the rear end. This channel and so many others that I'm subscribed to, gave me that kick in the rear with all of the excellent content. Thank you.

My path was during my PhD program, a professor needed someone to crew for him on his Catalina 22, offered to teach me to sail if I was interested. I did that for three summers. Fast forward 30 years. I decided I wanted to get back into it, so took ASA 101 (Basic Keelboat) from Seattle Sailing Club. The following summer, I took ASA 103/104. The following summer, I signed on with John Kretschmer for a 1400 mile passage from St. Thomas to Annapolis.
All this time, I've followed various TH-cam channels that seemed to advance me toward my goals. And, I read everything I can get my hands on about sailing - travelogues (e.g., Slocum, Moitessier, John's books, etc.,) technical material (e.g., "This Old Boat," "Annapolis Book of Seamanship," "The Complete Book of Sailing," etc.,) and fiction set in sailing contexts.
So now, I'm looking for a boat at the age of 64 (but in excellent health.) And that's one of the reasons I really like this channel - so many boats, so much great advice.

My brother-in-law got his start on larger boats by putting a note card on the bulletin board at the local marina. Will crew for training. He ended up on a Alberg 28?. That is where he stayed. Him and the owner had some great sails on the Chesapeake.

Brilliant - thank you. I'm about to join a UK yacht club; aiming to crew but starting by offering to look at various electrical issues on boats. Since I am a qualified electrician, this give me a way in, a useful skill to offer and a chance to crew and learn. A win-win.

FYI sailboats run DC bro.. its a different beast,.. but at least you'll know how to strip a wire and understand watts law. i think electricians call it "low voltage guys" honestly though, i would say anything your willing to do is a way in. just wanting to do it is enough.. lol.. just saying.. and be ready to learn some new electrical tricks.. you maybe an AC high voltage guy, but marine electrical in general is big change.

Great vid! My story is that I have sailed on boats as large as a 102’ Hermaphrodite Brig and as small as a Sunfish. My parents owned a Pearson 34 then a 38. My experience however ended over 35 years ago and now at 64 I’m dreaming of getting wet again. For what it’s worth the only boats I have personally owned are canoes and my current boat a 14’ open utility boat with a 25hp outboard. These videos have been a terrific source of information. Right now I’m watching C List and am encouraged by the number of 25 footers ( that’s my focus based on skills, location and my desire to be able to trailer for travel and storage ) that are for sail wishing a reasonable radius of my home in South Carolina. I am also blessed with a number of large impoundments/lakes appropriate for this size vessel. Thank you LadyK. Because of your videos I am familiar with the makes and types I see for sale. I almost feel like I know what I’m doing👍

Swelter inside in 100+ degree humidex, or go out on the nice cool lake, where it's blowing like an air conditioner on high. Hmm, hard choice. :-)
(Just because there's a race, that doesn't mean you actually have to go racing. Some extra heavy air experience under reefed main and a storm jib, or most of your jib furled, can still be a good time, and a great way to beat the heat.)

My first sail was at 15,out of Grimsby, Ontario with a business associate of my dad’s. I tried to get on crewing for wednesday night races in Hamilton harbour but had no takers. I spent the next ten years reading about sailing and going to marinas to watch boats and trying to get a ride to no avail. This was at a time when the security fences were going up around marinas shutting us wanabees out. I now have a “Kent Ranger 26’” trailerable sailboat which cost me my marriage but was worth it.

I'm the wrong person to ask the "how did you get in" question -- my aunt took me sailing when I was 5, and when I was 8 or 9, I jumped at the chance to join the junior sailing class at the local yacht club. My first sailboat that I owned was a Sailfish that fell off a truck, which I had to restore; I picked her up for $100, and then spent about that much in paint, plywood, and hardware getting her sailing again.

You didn't mention Hobie Cats as a good way to start, but I always thought they look cheap, simple, and fun. I realize cats are a little different than mono hulls, but it's still working with the wind & sails. Is anything "wrong" with starting with a small cat?

I sailed a sunfish when I was young, and a rc sailboat inbuilt from scratch...Fast fwd 35 years. On day I just decided to sail again. Bought a $400 dinghy and sailed it a season. Liked it, so I upgraded to a 74 Cat22 that needed a lot of love. That was two years ago, and love my boat! Looking forward to retirement and being a live aboard during the winter months. Cruising at 4 knots is, well, relaxing! Cheers!

Ive been dreaming about it for years...the annapolis book of seamanship has been on my bedside table....finally the circuit breaker was tripped.
Watched a video called the challenge about the watertribe everglades race...long coastal race with tiny sailboats and kayaks...there was a goat island skiff in that race. I saw that class of boat many places on the webs. Im building it this winter, epoxy is drying right now in the garage. I will learn with this dinghy and then move to something like a 25-35 and some coastal cruising.
This channel has great buyers guides I'm really enjoying them so thanks.

Sailing is like flying, anybody can learn in few hrs.
To do any of the two you need to have love and understanding for the weather, and whether you are on the lake or on the sea it plays a major factor along with navigation understanding.
The funny part is that most of the people fail on that exactly topic.
If you are ready to learn weather in depth and navigation you will be a good sailor/pilot, and enjoy the best that both world will give to you.
    Stay safe!

My Mom bought my Dad a Lark down at Erieau when I was 4 or 5, when we moved to London (ON) I took lessons with the Boy Scouts on Fanshawe Lake, eventually started teaching sailing. I have sailed in the Florida Keys, the Gulf of the St. Lawrence, the Pacific Coast, and of course most of the Great Lakes in everything from Lasers to Brigantines. I look forward to the day I might be able to do the Great Loop . (no boat right now :( )

i'm 19, went on my first sailing experience, a 5 day sailing trip around the west coast of scotland, just a couple months back and was immediately hooked. over those 5 days i learned pretty much all of the basics of how to sail and i certainly had plenty of time to learn with the 3 others, minus the skipper, who is a certified instructor and basically ended up just teaching us for the whole trip. it was fantastic. ever since that trip i have been constantly watching videos on youtube, reading online, buying books and researching ways to get into it. im currently planning to do my competent crew and day skipper certifications with the RYA here in the UK so that i can get some work sailing next year. at the moment i am looking to buy a house to finish my studies at uni in (this is because the housing market where i am is awful and there are zero places to rent along with very few places for sale within a sensible budget), this led me to thinking about whether i should consider getting a boat to live on for the next few years. doesnt have to be big or fancy, just enough for one person to live on full time at a small local marina along with some long weekends at anchor around the coast somewhere. have been doing a load of research into models of boats, what to look for, what you want etc, would likely be looking around the budget of 40-50k GBP and have seen quite a few listings over the past month that would be great for me. however my parents would be the ones needing convincing as they are the ones that were supporting me to buy a house and the ones providing me with the money for the mortgage deposit. so thats my situation right now.

Wow, your experience with other sailors is far different than mine. Racers looking to train people were very few and far between. Going to any marina that you weren't a member of got you dirty looks or occasionally threats of the cops. Anyone who wanted to learn sailing needed to pay for a rental and an instructor.

our big yacht club the RNYC, has both a full membership (2200$) and a social membership (350$) and if you're a boat owner, the full cost yearly would be about (3700$). That cost has dropped since the 80's for sure, but it's still steep.

Ditto on +- all of you your advice. My first was a MacGregor 25 with trailer and a very nice 9.9 Evinrude (electric start, alternator, 25” shaft) = $3500. Some folks with much larger $$$$$ boats made fun of my mine until they were staring at her stern shortly after class flag down!!!
Love the dangling VHF handheld at 8:20 😵
I too have had many free meals and drinks courtesy of instantaneous new friends while walking docks. Unfortunately I’ve noticed in the last 5-10 years that many marinas/clubs won’t let you casually stroll around...”may I see your ID”

I have just a few lessons and 3 months of sailing (Capri 22 and Flying Scott is it so far). My first boats were 25 foot MacGregor daysailers. I don't remember what the first one cost, but the second one was $900, hence the name of my channel. They are small but easy enough to fix up for live-aboard. The lady who bought it from me used it as a place to live at a marina that charged $10 per foot per month, so rent was $250 per month, a quarter of what the cheapest apartment would cost. I got the boats so I could spend the summers in the Florida keys and Bahamas because I could not afford a hotel there for the amount of time I wanted to spend.

I have researched a lot of 27-32' and Island Packet 27 offers the best features for a boat that size and price. The marinas here have a waiting list ten miles long. Thinking about getting into sailing. Thoughts on 1984 24 mirage or 1974 25 C&C as a first boat. Watching some of your videos and you suggest smaller than this as a first. I’m 6 feet 280lbs so think I will appreciate a little extra room but don’t want to buy something too hard to sail and get discouraged. If it wasn’t for price or safety a 30 footer with over 6 feet of headroom would be nice. I don’t really want to buy and sell a whole bunch buy right the first time and grow into it. Maybe?

Thank you for making this video, it was very informative, I always wanted to sail, I'm 35, and am thinking about it from quit a while, but what actually stops me not really the costs as it is the amount of licence you need to start your offshore, there's the main sailing license, the YRC, the electronics & radio things ... It seems an endless list. And it's kinda confusing and no one talk actually about the exact steps that you need to do and how long it will takes you to get there, or what to start with, and how many license you need.

I can see that many countries have closed their borders and will not let cruisers set foot on ground. Cruisers have to contract with a local to buy and deliver food out to their boat. About 20 years ago I joined a partnership with 4 other guys, 2 of which were good friends, all of whom were good dudes. I was the only person who had no experience. Simultaneously I was starting a new business with my wife. Early in the partnership I went out maybe 3 weekends a month, and over the next couple years that dropped off significantly until the business took over altogether. My experience when I was sailing was that there were simply too many chefs in the kitchen to gain the kind of knowledge I was looking for. I'm looking to get back into it now that this pandemic has put our business into a comatose state, but I don't want to get into a situation where there are 5 opinions about everything, even if they're amicable opinions. I'm not interested in being the fat guy on the high rail, handing out the beer, but at the same time, I don't know what I'm doing so I'll probably have to make some concessions.

That is the exact advice i give. In seattle seattle singles yacht club i recomend It. It is a family. Where you are at im sure there is some non snooty club. I have a 22 foot im living on now $500 by far the most money i have put into it is moorage. A couple of hundred would have made blue water "safe". I want it blue water ready...

Point is know you're boats! Cash in hand hit craigslist daily. I know a few guys that spent $1000s for my boat and years getting it restored. I walked into a time capsule Ready to go. Most 20ish foot boats are not blue water. Noteable nor'sea flicka 20' great! Falmouth cutter 22 best. Westerly cirrus best runner up. I have the cirrus but i can point hehe

Thx for the info. I sail on Lake Erie, and I followed you and your wife? Or girlfriend as you went thru Lake Erie and down the Erie Canal. I remember it was free that year( I thought you had said). I would like to do the same sometime.

Lake Mead Nevada is $1.50 a foot per month. $350 a month minimum just the slip. All the boats are super old and overpriced because we never get new inventory. Land locked problems.

Good vids with good info - had a Newport 32 new 79 - 81, then into my career starting with the military - thought if I wait till I can afford it I’ll be too old - started out learning as a teen on a 14 ft Butterfly in Wisconsin, then our priest to us kids out and learned more on a Tartan 32 on Lake Michigan, and I was hooked. Like got in the way and now retired and wanting to get a boat again, but forgotten allot of details - one question: do I want to get a boat more than 20 years old? Are there lender and insurance issues with boats older than that? Not looking to sail around the world or cross oceans; just coastal and part-time live aboard, but still want solid seaworthy and safety - don’t want situation like you had with yours almost sinking, or what happened with Bobby on Doodles with a blown engine that almost sank and now massive $$$$ repairs -

I'm working toward that goal... Getting my own sailboat. , generally how is the "offer I will make" / the determined apprised value of boat reflected in asking price by owner + blue sky on some models / years .? / Budweiser is all over the world, now Miller is a hard one to find .

Are there any resources to find a good marina or club in your area? Like an ability to find and compare them without hoping google picks them up and going individual website by website.

I cannot agree that bud light is a good beer. There are so many beers that are better. Like most of them are better.

Hey all! I'm trying to "pull the trigger" currently, I have found a 1979 Gulfstar sloop for a great price. I am up north on the great lakes where I will sail mostly, but dream of taking off for the bahammas once a year. Does anyone have any information or opinions on if this boat would be right? Or any boat they would reccomend? I don't have a huge budget. All info is welcomed:)
