I believe this was written and performed for the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial Service back in 1995. That is why the music conveys a mixture of sorrow and hope. I heard it for the first time in an ACDA convention back in the mid-1990s. It was such a moving piece then and it remains an emotional piece now. RIP to all those who perished.
John Fu oh goodness, wrong version lol. My choir has done both this version and the Thompson “Alleluia”, and they are both traditional pieces for us. I confused the two, sorry about that!! I actually do not know the history of this “Alleluia”, so thank you for that! 🙏🏽
Makes me want to cry. This was one of the last compositions I sang with my college choir before Covid ended my college career. The word “alleluia” means praise God which is hard to do in a time like this where I graduated college with no ceremony and churches are being ordered to close. Still, God is worthy of praise since He sent His son to die for us.
I'm Brazilian (from the land of the composer of this masterpiece). In fact, I already had the honor of being under the guidance of Ralph Manuel. I can't understand why you North Americans always start this piece so pianissimo. In the first performance of this piece she started out more energetic, until she reached a point where she had a super explosion! Another thing: why are you guys so slow? Once again: in the original version this piece is more accelerated! In the original version, the bass is extremely vivid! Not this thing that looks more like a three-part youth choir. However, this type of interpretation is clearly North American.

It was actually written and commissioned in 1940 and Randall Thompson drew upon the war in Europe which is why it is somber.
