Jack, great interview. I think one thing General Martin said was telling. He was a senior leader. If you’re in command as a senior leader unless you’re failure is disruptive most people are differential to their leaders. So if your behavior is way off baseline your behavior may be characterized as eccentric or colorful. If you behaved in the same manner as a junior officier it’s harder to escape scrutiny and face discipline. Equal Justice is often not the norm however retired general officers like MG Martin serve a vital role. Providing insight into the need for oversight, essentially a battle buddy or peer to check in. Depression, anxiety, and ptsd are often successfully treated if we create a climate of acceptance that high stress jobs often can trigger acute reactions to stress these reactions and conditions are often treatable and reversible and should not always end a career. There are chronic mental health conditions that may end a career but even in these cases, we as citizens have an obligation to our servicemen to heal any wounds sustained while wearing the cloth of our nation and beyond. We owe our servicemen our fidelity and our loyalty.
So if you are a commissioned officer mental health matters. Enlisted get thier carreers ruined and clearance removed. Didn't know until he was in his 50's. BS
