    Out of all the e30 valve adjustment videos I have watched on "the tube" this is one of the best.

    I know this is very late but those headbolts are prone to breaking they were replaced with updated torque to yield bolts with e torx. If anyone has them there is a procedure from bmw to install the updated bolts without needing to do a whole head gasket job

      Hey! Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it. I think, after I finishing wrapping the car, I will probably take out the engine, separate head from the block, and tend to anything that needs attention. I will definitely install new headbolts. Thanks again!!

    Hi, question:
    So any lobe facing down can be adjusted?..... Irrespective of timing marks... correct?

    What type of sealant to put on the valve cover gasket? I also struggle with leaks and the gasket is new

    • @thedriversapex
      @thedriversapex  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sorry for the delay. I used an aerobic sealant. Hope this helps www.permatex.com/products/gasketing/anaerobic-gasket-makers-sealants/permatex-anaerobic-flange-sealant-50-ml/

    So I watched someone else’s video and they said that before adjusting the valves you need to jack up the rear end of the car and have the car pointing down slightly, did I miss you doing this in the video? Or is it not necessary

    • @thedriversapex
      @thedriversapex  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Thanks for watching. I have never heard of this. I had a BMW tech teach me how to adjust the valves on my m20 and s54 and he never did that. I’m going to look into this for sure. Thanks again!!

      Maybe you’ve misheard the video you’re referencing. Jacking up the car has no effect on valve clearancing.

      There is a method where one jacks the rear end up and places the e30 into 5th gear (this only works with a Manual Transmission car) and then rotates one of the rear wheels as they are limited slip and will rotate the camshaft allowing one to move the camshaft to the location one want where the lobe of the camshafts are pointed downward. It a step one can take versus placing a wrench on the CrankShaft bolt in the engine bay to rotate the camshaft.

    How do you tell how tight the locking nut needs to be without a torq wrench, I don’t even know if you can even get a torq wrench in there.

    • @thedriversapex
      @thedriversapex  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. I use an extension with a swivel. You’ll be close. I’m sure the torque value changes with a swivel and an extension, but you won’t be torquing it to the point that the stud will snap. Feel with a socket wrench the other nuts and it will give you an idea. I hope that helps and makes sense. With a 3/8” ratchet, it’s tight, but you won’t be using lots of force. Probably the same as tighter info your spark plugs.

      Also one thing is you should show the car starting at the end to show what she should sound like hence too aggressive or too quiet

      Good point! Thanks for the idea; I like it. I’m almost done with the steering rack swap so I’ll be able to post soon. Thanks for watching.

    Can you turn the engine over in either direction? (Clockwise and counterclockwise)

    • @thedriversapex
      @thedriversapex  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. You can rotate the engine clockwise; however, you can go counterclockwise if you overshoot tdc. I’ve done that multiple times and a few degrees the other way is not big deal. Try to avoid counterclockwise through the entire rotation. Thanks for watching!!
