    Some of those movies come from old european tales (Cinderella, Snow white...) so for european countries it's not really a translation of the disney movies, but simply the local version of the name that always existed in the first place.
    Frozen is a weird one, because it was inspired by the Snow Queen, but only loosely that's probably why it was called Frozen in english and not the original name of the tale. But you can see that France chose to stick to the name of the original.

    Cendrillon (Cinderellaà is a fairy tale written by a Frenchman Charles Perrault.
    La Belle et la Bête (Beauty and the Beast) had a first Italian draft but the finished version that everyone knows today was written by a Frenchwoman Gabrielle Suzanne de Villeneuve.

      just a tiny clarification, Charles Perrault was one of the first to write the story for Cendrillon but it was taught to people way before it's time. the story has no origin but someday someone (Charles) just wrote it in a book

    When you can translate everything into your language, that's means you understand the story very well. It also shows that your language is very diverse and has a rich history.

    2. Toys Story, she said Thế giới đồ chơi (aka The world of toys), the sub is wrong but is also right since Câu truyện đồ chơi literal mean Toys Story lol.
    Some fun facts:
    1. Bạch Tuyết or Tuyết Bích (wordplay of Bitch) is a meme icon in Vietnam.
    2. Vietnam also has it own version of Cinderella but it is way darker compare even the OG story of the Grimm brothers, it names Tấm Cám.

    We have in Germany the same way to translate titles exactly exactly like French. We don't say the English titles, from books or films. We translated it so that People can understand. Sometimes is it not the same, but not very often.
    1 She still names Elsa and the movie gonna be: 'Die Eiskönigin'.
    2 In German it's 'Winnie Bär'.
    3 In German it's 'WALL-E'.
    4 In German, Toy Story is the same and his name 'Buzz Blitzer' it means Buzz the Lighning bolt.
    5 In German we say 'Woody'.
    6 In German we say 'Tarzan'.
    7 In German it's 'Schneewittchen', that is «white snow» and the name of the movie is 'Schneewittchen und die sieben Zwergen'.
    8 In German it's 'Aschenputtel'. It has also as French, it's 'small ash'.
    9 in German it's 'Die Schöne und das Biest', it's means 'Beauty and the Beast, same and she's called 'Belle'.
    10 in German it's 'König der Löwen', it means the kings of lions. We don't say 'Lion king'.

    8:51 I heard that Cinderella was originally a french story and when it got translated into English there was a error which changed the fur slipper in the original into the familiar glass slipper.

    • @cleog765
      @cleog765 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn't expecting to see such comment here but I remember having gotten this debate once so I'll try to sum it up quickly. I'm not sure it's originally a french story but yes, french people somehow have a confusion that still doesn't have an answer. (Basically you believe the one you want to believe). The presupposed mistake of fur/glass seems unreal knowing how the french transcriptor of the story mastered the french language, however it still exists this doubt for whatsoever reason in which the shoe could be of a specific type of fur "vair" instead of glass "verre" (both pronounced the same) but 1) a shoe of fur would have been more likely to accept several feet unlike some hard shoe such as a glass shoe and 2) in other versions of the story (like in China) it's made of gold, making it another hard shoe.

    • @chucku00

      Yup, "vair" means squirrel (écureuil petit-gris) fur but it sounds like "verre", glass.

      There are multiples stories around the world that have similar themes as Cinderella (cruel stepfamily etc...), some very old, but the French version (from Perrault) is the one that introduced most of the elements we associate with the modern version: the name of the story, the fairy godmother, the magic that stops at midnight, the pumpkin carriage, the prince that finds cinderella because of her shoe... most of what we associate with the story comes from Perrault's version. That's why Disney used that version for his movie.

    • @xenotypos
      @xenotypos ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AimyLizz Oral traditions could be a very local and cultural thing. It's been demonstrated that the themes associated with Sleeping Beauty were strongly associated with the area around modern day France. The first story with such themes dating back from the middle ages (Perceforest).
      As I said, Cinderella is different and fits better to what in your comment you (wrongly) imagine every tales to be. With versions everywhere yes. But even then, it's simply a fact that the version associated with the modern story culturally comes from the french version. There are other stories with similar themes, but those are still different to varying degrees.
      You also have to take into account the personal additions of the writer, indeed Perrault or the Grim brothers often didn't just collect the stories, but added elements to it.

    Since most disney movies are usually taken from old fairy tales, translators usually refer to the original work to help them translate names
    ex: for Frozen and the Little Mermaid, it is inspired by two tales from Hans Andersen (which are very different as most of the work disney adapts is a bit more gruesome they tone it down or just change the whole script).
    A lot of characters' names and even some movie titles are directly taken from how these tales were translated back then (In French, la reine des neiges and la petite sirène are the names of these tales translated from Danish).
    In fact, most of the time the names chosen in English are only relevant for added characters so most likely minor ones, and lo and behold their names barely change between languages.
    Well at least for European countries, I'm French but I also know how a lot of these characters are pronounced in Italian, Spanish, English and German.
    Since Pixar are most of time original stories, the names are generally kept as they are.
    I think this shows that most of the time, the goal is to stay true to the intent of the work, if it is recent or if it's older to keep it a tribute to the original.

    In Portuguese the concept of Cinderella is the same as in English or French, we just use our own words: Gata Borralheira. "Gata" means female cat and "Borralheira" derives from "borralho" (which is more or less the same as _cendre_ or _cinder),_ and means something like "someone who likes to be by the fire or near the fireplace". "Why call her gata?", you might ask: well, that's because in the old days cats liked to sleep in the warm floor of the fireplaces and were always all dirty because of the ashes. 😄

What you're saying isn't even 100% true, The Princess and the Frog is an adaptation of the German fairy tale The Frog Prince, it was set in New Orleans only to make the story look more American. And Moana doesn't have a lot to do with France.
      You're right for the other ones though, even if it's sometimes more complicated than that. For example Sleeping Beauty is a story which roots seem firmly french since the middle ages, but Disney's version is inspired from both Perrault's (France) and the Grim brothers (Germany) versions. Cinderella is the opposite, that story is universal in its themes, but Disney really mainly used the French version by Perrault, which has always been the most popular.

    (translating Thai's movie name for WALL-E is "tiny robot with a strong dedicated heart", and many other more movies)

      New Ariel looks like blue people from avatar. I'm friends with a lot of black folks, I never met one that is thankful for race swapping characters. Maybe some children appreciate it, but I don't think they are the majority. Also isn't taking a character from another culture or ethnicty (little mermaid is a danish fable) and inserting some one else's the definition of "cultural appropriation"? I am all for more new characters of minority groups (which I am part of) but the race swapping is hypocrisy. If race swapping normalized, we should race swap for all races.

      @@vaccinatedanti-vaxxerPlus : not every "Disney princess" or great female character is "white European woman" , remember Tiana , Mulan , Pocahontas , Esmeralda , Moana , Jasmine and goes on , in fact , it's not the "race" that says whether a character is good or not , my favorite is Mulan and her movie is amazing , but yet I still loving Rapunzel , Snow White ( the old one ) , Ariel ( also the old one ) , Aurora , etc...

    • @vaccinatedanti-vaxxer
      @vaccinatedanti-vaxxer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Oliver right I love when disney introduce new characters from folk tales and fables from non European cultures. I wish they do it more often, let disney retell their vision of dokkebi (troll/goblin), gumiho (9 tail fox that shape shift into a woman in rain), mul gweshin (water ghost). Not another race swap, worse version of the classic. I'm a man in my 30s so I'm not the target audience, but I think disney lost their "magic" coming up with timeless stories that transcends culture, universal relatable characters that teach kids good morals and entertain parents.
