    The amount of effort you put into shooting and editing is amazing. Would be too much work for me to do it like that for a hobby project. You definitely deserve much more subscribers, this is one of my favourite shows in TH-cam.

    Fantastic episode Paul. Love the way you thoroughly research for each video. In 50 years from now your videos will still be here giving a fantastic insight into a part of history that few may be here to recall. A real archival treasure trove.

      Totally agree, I wish if he also makes multiple back-ups of the entire work, repeated, of the same material. We know of many people who do this, they back up their work on multiple drives with exact copies of their work or projects, so they don't risk losing any, if one external drive get damaged, they have others. It is like an insurance policy. Some label it as protocol. Multiple hard drives just to be on the safe side.
      His work is amazing and very very important, unique and one of a kind.. :^)

    Brilliant episode :) I'm an avid 8/16-bit magazine collector (I have complete collections of C+VG, YS, SU, Crash, etc!) and it was great to see them covered here. I've always loved magazines and it's a real shame they don't really exist any more. The web may have taken their place, but the printed page is such a great thing too :)

    Another 20 excellent episodes down. Loving all the format tweaks. This episode's extended feature was a real treat too. I'm hoping you've got one about the covertape wars somewhere waiting for me. I'm off to episode 41 now so I can find it as fast as possible.

    Wow, what an episode, thank you so much Paul, for these incredible video's that you have created, your video's remind me of the days when a new issue of Sinclair User & Crash had been released in the newsagents, couldn't wait to read them, or in your case, watch them..........THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Absolutely superb episode, I recall some of those mags and covers going through my hands, oh the memories, running into Smiths at the train station each month to buy the latest editions before getting on the train home from work, then being so engrossed nearly forgetting to get off, thank you for bringing back the memories Paul, great work once again :)

    Fascinating episode, the chart was a great way of presenting it. I do look back at some of the mags from time to time, but I do get very nostalgic for the good old days. Shame we can't go back...

    Wow, after all these years, I do remember the covers you showed of Your Computer!
    Of course, I also fondly remember YS and Crash, which were the only British Sinclair magazines to be sold in this Commodore and MSX-biased country (Netherlands). Having said that, most of the magazines mentioned in the video weren't available here either.
    (okay, I also remember ACE and Games Machine because of the love for the Commodore Amiga here)
    I also bought PC Mag, the US publication in the beginning of the PC era. I should have saved a copy with the first colour laptop (a NEC) on the cover.

    Hey Paul, that was an amazing feature, thanks sooooo much. You know, the editor of Personal Computer Games not only went on to be the editor of Zzap!64 having borrowed Bob Wade to help with reviews, but then formed Future Publishing. Now he is the curator of T.E.D....quite a career you could say!

    Great episode!
    Whilst I did miss the normal features here, I certainly enjoyed seeing the overview of how the publications changed over the Spectrum's life time. Especially with how many multi-format publications made it out there, and how long & short the various runs were.

    Nice one Paul. I latched onto your show from Geoff's channel, and have spent the last week or two watching everything the two of you have published here on TH-cam, in roughly date order. This was a lovely feature and an excellent end to this series of the show. I've still got about a year to catch up on by the look of it, so I'll be back after tea! Keep up the good work...please :-)

      DejaVoodooDoll Many thanks for your kind words. I think the wonderful element of computing, especially in the early days, was the sheer variety on offer. So many computers, so many games, so many magazines and so many opinions. It is important to cover as many aspects as possible. Sadly time is against us, and even though I would like to do things on the Amiga and ZX81, I just don't have the physical time. I hope someone else will pick up the torch for those.

    I read Sinclair User, You Sinclair and Crash. Even in the Netherlands they were sold in nearly every bookstore and newsagent. Combine that with all the other format specific, and Dutch and German magazines, the choice we had was absolutely amazing. In a way some things haven't changed. You can still find Retro Gamer pretty easily in Dutch shops, for example.

    • @BuckingTheTrend2008
      @BuckingTheTrend2008  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      custardo I think it's a pity there isn't the same choice of hardware now - just PC or console (with games that look identical). Much better back then, so much variety.

    And here I was thinking Your Sinclair outlived Sinclair User. Guess I got proven wrong here.
    Still, I subscribed to both and loved it how they called each other names, each getting sillier and sillier as time went on.....
    Ah, the good old days ;-)
    Edit: Oh, and what an awesome Feature.

    I quite like the idea of having a feature length, erm, feature every now and then. It's quite refreshing and shakes things up!
    How did you get your scans by the way? World of Spectrum's magazine archive is completely screwed up at the moment!

    • @BuckingTheTrend2008
      @BuckingTheTrend2008  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Some scans I did from my own collection, some from a DVD set I have. Yes, WOS being offline is causing me no end of problems!

    • @Larry
      @Larry 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Jenkinson
      WOS seems to be going down hill in general as of late. Did they even ever put up those type-in games you submitted?
      Have you checked Archive . org as well? they're slowly building a collection of gaming mags, they also do Spanish, French and German ones too!

    • @BuckingTheTrend2008
      @BuckingTheTrend2008  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** WOS has had no archive updates for over a year now, so none of the type-ins are there. I think they are working to get things back to 100% soon. I really hope so.

    • @Larry
      @Larry 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      They need to turn it into something more wiki bases, so users can add and edit information instantly.
      But it's a shame as it was by far the best spectrum resource site on the internet.

  • @scorpioxdi
    @scorpioxdi 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    That was a great episode, thanks for making the decision to go with it as a full-length feature, it was definitely the right choice! I have fond memories of most of these magazines and still have a good few of them to re-(re-)read occasionally.
    I always liked "Your Computer" as they had a good mix of multi-format type-ins and so it was a great way to see the different ways each platform did their thing. For some reason it wasn't so easy to get here in Ireland though and I was lucky if I could get catch maybe a few issues of it throughout a given year. Let's not forget that it also serialised the well-known 1K Chess type-in which (IMO) hasn't really been bettered since, even by the recent bootchess.
    TBH, I think regular cover tapes were the beginning of the end as paying writers for serious content was traded off against bunging a cover tape with a few game demos. I've always contended (to anyone who would listen) that it was this which heralded the downfall of the full-price game market too - More often than not the demos very quickly revealed the limitations of the software.

    • @BuckingTheTrend2008
      @BuckingTheTrend2008  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      scorpioxdi Good point about the cover tapes - now all you need to do is write a nice feature about them and I can add it to the show ;-)

    Your Sinclair was essential reading when I was a kid, and I loved the jokey tone and running gags. They were shooting for the irreverent tone of Smash Hits (the ed bit was pinched from SH iirc - Ed) and more or less pulled that off. Not childish at all in my view, though often silly.

    With the eventual birth of the internet and its wealth of 'At you fingertips' information the paper mags were just about done. We have many things now that would do well with a mag perhaps like Singleboad computers that shout back to the single person / indie game development ( As you mention mobile, Its all Arm you know! ), now with RiscV and FPGA I think the same could be said for emulation as having something 99% accurate etc etc is better than any Emulator like MAME and friends. Also worth a mention is Arduino and the many clones out there that make the electronics hacking arena more accessable to the masses.

    The change in Crash wasn't gradual. I remember being wowed by a 1989 issue, a nice big magazine with varied content. Interviews, wargames, PBEM, all sorts. I decided to start buying it regularly. The next issue (65) was the "New Crash", a 32 page pamphlet with a covertape.

    good review of the mags.... I was always a big CRASH reader, but at the end of its life when the mag was paper thin, it got a bit pointless in my opinion.. I agree with you 100% about the childish humour in YS and sinclair User, I hated that and to me spoilt the magazine, but the free tape made it worth while!!!
