In 2007 because of the fuel rules the last driver to make a lap had a significant advantage over their partner, for this reason McLaren decided that both drivers would take turns as to not benefit anyone. In the 2007 Hungarian GP it was Fernando's turn to go last and Lewis broke the agreement and the team did nothing, that's why Alonso did the blocking. Also it is probably the only instance of a team pushing the FIA to penalize their own driver. There are many reasons to believe that McLaren did indeed favor Hamilton, there is an interview of Ron Dennis saying "‘our race isn’t with Massa, it is with Fernando’
Im 33 I grow up wathcing Magic Fernando. You right What if he had a decent car all those years :( for me still the best on the grid. Give him a tractor he will make it on top 10.
@@DiegoGarcia-dg5wg English is probably not their first language. However, if what the original poster says is true, that means when Fernando Alonso debuted in 2001, the poster was 10 years old. Hence, their comment makes sense in that regard.
@mediarblx_npc The comment was not making fun of his English (English isn't my first language either, and I wouldn't stoop so low as to berate someone for grammar mistakes in a foreign language) You see, Fernando Alonso has 32 race wins in F1, and the last one was 11 years ago (Spain 2013). So for us Alonso fans, "la 33" (Alonso's 33rd win) was for many years a distant and unreachable dream. But lo and behold: 2023 came and, for once, Alonso had a car who could actually compete for podiums and wins, and the 33rd win suddenly seemed possible. So there was (and to certain extent, still is) this meme that whenever the number 33 came up in absolutely any context we were suddenly commenting things like "WHAT? 33?", "Could you repeat that little number?", "this person knows things, El Nano is going to do it" and shitposting along this lines. So I was referencing that (I'm pretty sure OP is a Spaniard too)
@@DiegoGarcia-dg5wg luckily you cleared up that you weren't making fun of them for their spelling and it's cool to see some lore you've just popped in this comment section. Thanks 😁.
@@fillio4012 Thanks! Actually, I think it was Alonso himself who started the meme posting some stories on IG referencing the number 33 in some obscure ways. Nowadays the meme is a bit dead due to the AMR24 being... well... a bit lacking in performance, but I remember watching a journalist tweet something like "Håland has scored 33 goals in Champions League" and nearly all the comments were variations of "HOW MANY GOALS?" "Could you repeat that number?" "33 GOALS YOU SAID?" "Håland knows things" "the old man is gonna do it", and so on. Aaaaah, fun times.
Was Fernando wasted potential? Perhaps. But was he ever good enough to win more than his two world championships? Ultimately no. He gave us fantastic challenges in 2010 and 2012, but he was never outright faster than Kimi or Schumacher in the 2000s ... even Montoya was considered stronger. In the 2010s he wasn't ultimately better than Vettel or Hamilton either. It's not just on-track heroics that matter, it's relationships with your team too. Michael Schumacher developed fantastic relationships with his team members, as did Hamilton and Vettel. Alonso never had that.
People only thought Kimi was faster because his McLaren was much faster. By 2009 Ferrari replaced Kimi with Alonso. In 2010 and 2012 he was voted the best driver by team principals in the Ferrari. Vettel had the car, which is what F1 is all about, more so than talent. If Hamilton got his first choice move to Red-Bull in 2014, Rosberg would probably be a 6 or 7 WDC.

F1 IS an English sport and English people have a hard time admitting a Southerner has more talent than them.
6:45 alonso qualified on pole in 2009???? Which Hungarian GP are you talking about????
