We see how easy it is for a great driver to win with the best car. Schumacher did it. Hamilton did it. Verstappen is doing it. All legendary drivers, but none have had the misfortune that Fernando has had. Taking the title fight to the last race in 2007, 2010 and 2012 is something that very few drivers are capable of. The longer Fernando drives, the less the numbers seem to matter, and the more his on-track performance speaks to how mighty he is. Two championships is not nothing. Jim Clark had two. Alberto Ascari had two. Graham Hill had two. He is in good company.

    Spot on
I started watching F1 in 2010 as a kid, but from 2016 I watch it more closly, not just "I watch it"
For me Fernando was a former champion, he was there like Kimi, but didn't delivered results and was a toxic people as rumors said, he always wanted to be the team leader, but team radios didn't reflected to that.
When he retired, I was just OK, we are probably don't see him anymore.
Comeback - I also thought why sign an old driver who surrounded by so much trouble.
His podium in Qatar showed me he still worthy for F1, but this 2023 his true talent

The fact that Alonso is very positive now shows that it wasn't a character flaw in Fernando that he happened to be toxic at times in his previous stint in f1, the situation just got too frustrating to him especially at McLaren. I bet that top tier drivers like Max, Lewis, Charles etc. would be just as pissed as Fernando was if they were given the 2nd worst car on the grid for multiple years.

I hate how everyone wants to say they need to go for a junior driver. If the junior drivers are good enough then they will get the ride. It’s why I hate when people don’t was Daniel back because they think he is taking a seat from a up and coming talent. Do we really need to just not have someone who has won before in a car to always watch someone who usually takes a long time to be experienced, or isn’t what we thought they were crashing and in the back? I know new drivers do need chances, but that doesn’t mean once you leave because the cars you are driving don’t fit you and are slow, that you don’t deserve another chance.

Of course, I learnt about the McLaren disaster, but you can understand why he was publicly slamming the team on and off track. That was the lowest of lows for such a famous team. Since his return, we’ve seen magic moments from him so many times, Canada 2022 front row quali in a midfield car and Hungary 2021 and that monster defence against Hamilton, come to mind. Lewis would have a meltdown and Seb would be a husk of himself in that McLaren - Honda car. He could've done better? Yes, but it feels like he got a lot more shit than others would have because he is such a polarizing figure in F1. Plus come on, his radios were amazing, the engine feels good radio is hilarious.

the fact that alonso is still one of the best drivers today speaks volume about his incredible and unseen longevity. this could also suggest the opposite, instead of alonso being amazing, perhaps the competition (younger drivers such as stroll, lando, and george) are weak themselves. you can see the same thing at mercedes.
these older drivers should be tossed out of f1, not by politics but by outperforming them. it's the natural cycle. the fact that alonso and hamilton appear to be defying that cycle proves that the current generation is just weak. it's impossible for alonso and hamilton to still be operating at 100% ie, their primes. they are fighting a losing battle against time.
