Effective Parkinson’s Disease Exercises | Occupational Therapy

  • Are you looking for Parkinson's disease exercises that are effective and uses movements that you need to do your everyday tasks? If you are, then this video will be very helpful for you.
    With Parkinson’s disease, the movements are often stiff, slow and shaky. It is important for occupational therapists to formulate exercises that will improve the smoothness of the movements as well as effective. The movements need to be those that are used during every day tasks that decreases tremors, rigidity and improves speed of movement. The exercises in this video is to be done twice a day or more in order to be able to control and improve the quality of the movements.
    Also, remember to make your movements extra large. The more exaggerated the better.
    Before you get started, it will be nice to be able to see your improvements. So try to record or video your movements using a regular camera or your cell phone before and then after the exercises. Like video yourself while putting on and removing a shirt or using a spoon or a fork and when you are walking.
    This way you will be motivated to continue your occupational therapy. But remember, it takes several practice days before you see profound results. Consistency is the key and never give up.
    In this video I am going to combine how it looks like to do the exercises while sitting and standing. We will do five repetitions sitting down and then five standing up.
    Exercises included:
    1. Y Stance - used when putting on a shirt
    2. A Stance - used in dressing and undressing
    3. Ankle to Waist- pulling pants up and down
    4. Trunk Twister - wiping after toileting
    5. Fencing - reaching sideways
    6. Ball throwing - reaching towards the front
    7. Marching in place - improves walking
    8. Arm flicking - decreases tremors, shaking

    Nathan I new I had Parkinson’s a year ago when I fell off my bike and hit pavement 😮with my head. Thank God I’m alive because my helmet bounced off payment. My neurologist is doctor Alexander Smirnoff here in Lady lake Fla . He detected my disease.I watched all your videos and can follow all your exercises. Someone here got insulted when you said we do the funny walk & imitated a person walking small steps… I felt a bit uncomfortable but knew you meant no harm or insult. Our bodies dictate movement until you tell it to do different and walk with normalcy. Love your videos thank you so much for making our new journey possible.

    Thank you for doing these videos. I am 67 yr old female diagnosed with Parkinsons. Your exercises really really helped me a lot. And your right consistency is the KEY to improved quality of life for persons with parkinsons. I find my left knee locks down and i hv to wait for min 5 mins before i can get moving. Do you hv exercise video to prevent knee lock down. Thank you God Bless

    Parkinson disease is a very terrible illness, my Dad suffered from it for 19 years until we finally got a help and a medicine that truly works that helped treat, cure and reversed all his symptoms•••My Dad is completely okay and healthy now..

      Do the exercises close to the bed or couch and use a gaitbelt or even a regular belt. You can sray infront of her or beside her while doing the exercises
